Charity News

The cure for blood cancer isn’t in a lab or a petri dish. It isn’t a pill or a powder. If you’re aged 16-30 and in good health, IT’S YOU! Sounds weird, right? But it’s true. If you tick the right boxes, you could save the life of someone with blood cancer, simply by donating your blood stem cells. But first you need to join the Anthony Nolan register. They use their register to match incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people in desperate need of transplants. Donating isn’t difficult, neither is joining their register. But it is urgent. So be the cure. People joining the register must be between 16 and 30 years old be in good health, weigh over 7st 12lbs (50kg) and have a body mass index (BMI) lower than 40. They particularly need more young men to sign up. Men produce more stem cells than women and are six times more likely to donate, but make up just 14% of the register. They also need more donors from black and minority ethnic backgrounds as they often struggle to find matches for people in these groups. Every day, they match incredible individuals willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people with blood cancer and blood disorders who desperately need lifesaving transplants.

How one little boy’s legacy led to a million lifesaving transplants... In 1971, Anthony Nolan was born with a rare condition called Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. The only cure was a bone marrow transplant. But none of his family were a match, and a transplant using bone marrow from an unrelated donor had never succeeded. There was no system to find matching unrelated donors, either. In 1973, a little boy called Simon Bostic had the first successful unrelated donor transplant. This gave Anthony’s mother, Shirley, an idea: to start a bone marrow register to connect unrelated donors with people like her son, who desperately needed a transplant. So in 1974, the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register was established in Westminster Children’s Hospital, where Anthony was a patient. Shirley campaigned and fundraised tirelessly to make this happen. The register grew throughout the seventies. Sadly, it couldn’t help Anthony Nolan, who died in 1979, aged eight. With a huge amount of tireless campaining the register grew. By 1986, 14 people on the register had donated bone marrow to patients in need. In 1994, they provided their 1,000th person with a transplant. In 2012, the world’s millionth stem cell transplant took place – something that was unimaginable when Shirley started her campaign. Now, the charity help three people each day find that lifesaving match. They also conduct world-class research into stem cell matching and transplants, so we can make sure every person in need gets the best possible treatment.

MORE THAN HALF A MILLION PEOPLE ARE NOW ON THE REGISTER!

The Hunt For Selfless Superheroes Anthony Nolan is searching for more local heroes in and around Loughborough to join their bone marrow register in the fight against blood cancer. Championed by local MP Nicky Morgan this search is underway as the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register has been mapped across the UK by local area for the first time. Nicky commented: “There are 1053 heroes in Loughborough alone on the register, which is a wonderful figure. However, I’m helping hunt for more people to sign up today so we can fight blood cancer together. For somebody to give a stranger a second chance at life is truly heroic. I’m proud to champion this cause to my constituents.” Two thirds of UK patients will not find a matching donor from within their families; instead they turn to Anthony Nolan to find them an unrelated donor. But they can currently only find a match for around half of those in desperate need, and urgently need more people to come forward. To find out more information, or to start your application to join the register, please visit the Anthony Nolan website:

Rutland Water saw 220 charity riders on Sunday 8th June tackle 3 ride routes 7, 18, 25 miles.

The money raised will support the work of LOROS Hospice, enabling the charity to help terminally ill patients, their families and carers in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Families and friends turned up early, on Sunday morning, to have fun and to benefit from the exercise around the picturesque cycle routes. The weather helped to attract a bigger crowd than the organisers had expected . LOROS Hospice Fundraiser, Christian Weikert-Picker, said: “The ride offers a variety of routes to suit all the family, in this beautiful location overlooking Rutland Water. It has been a popular event over the years. It offers a real challenge on the longer routes for experienced riders, who like a fast and varied course. While the shorter route is enjoyed by both children and adults. It is aimed at children who are starting out cycling and adults who enjoy a leisurely ride over a safe route. “We hope to better last year’s total and we have an aim of raising over £10,000 with the help and generosity of our supporters.”

Rothley History Society At the meetings this year there has been a noticeable increase in the size of the audience. Maybe this is down to the popularity of the individual speakers, or maybe the subject of the talks have appealed to a wider audience, either way it is most pleasing, both for the committee organising the evenings and also for the speakers.

NT Leicester Association During August, in the dining room at Belton House near Grantham there will be a display of British contemporary silver from the Silver Trust’s collection normally used at Downing Street and rarely on public display. The collection, which has witnessed many a great dining occasion, features some of the finest and most intriguing silverware created in recent years. The Silver Trust was set up in 1987 to provide silver for government entertaining and with an aim of promoting contemporary British silversmiths. The collection, which is loaned to the government, includes pieces by all the best names in modern silverwork. Having been on show around the world in recent years the display at Belton House could be described as a return to its “spiritual home”. This is because it was Lord Brownow’s loan of silver for use at Number 10 which drew the lack of a national collection of silver for government entertaining to the attention of the founding trustees. Amongst the collection’s commissions are a set of seventy-two under plates, each one unique and designed by entrants to a competition. Designs range from the whimsical such as a pea plate that you can push a pea through a maze, to more serious items relating to Number 10 and the United Kingdom. Other pieces include flower bowls, water jugs, salvers and bowls. Belton House is also home to both the largest indoor and outdoor play areas at any National Trust property. Belton House is open each week from Wednesday to Sunday, 12.30 to 5.00pm. For details of the NT Leicester Association and its Talks Service for other organisations please call 0116 2229133.

So far this year we have been able to welcome Julie Ede, who gave us a very illustrative talk on the “Wonderful, wily, wicked Wallis” – this talk was quite risqué and embraced the meeting of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson and all that went on there, up to the abdication and the preparations for their wedding day. At the February meeting we broke with tradition and introduced two local speakers, both with stories from World War II – Terry Sheppard who talked about the top secret unit RAF80 Wing (Signals) and the furious electronic war with German Luftwaffe target-finding radio beams, and Frank Whitby who gave an inside review of his uncle who was an Air Gunner/Wireless Operator who was shot down over Germany on 14 May 1943, and the care given to his burial by local German people. March, saw a change in tempo, when Anne Horton came to give an in-depth history, (right from Domesday), of Rothley Plain (and surrounding area) - it’s land owners, the exchange of ownership, it’s development and some of it’s residents. It became evident that Rothley was obviously a popular residential area for the owners of the larger Leicester businesses. In April we had a fascinating talk by Brian Johnson, who reminded us of the large businesses which had started in Leicester, some of which are now large national companies, and sadly some which have disappeared. At our May meeting, our speaker was Malcolm Britten who gave us a very detailed look at the village of Brooksby, it’s history, it’s hall and it’s residents, it’s connection with royalty, and their forthcoming celebrations for the 100th. Anniversary of the Battle of Jutland. We will not be meeting during July and August, but will be visiting Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens in place of our August meeting. Our regular meetings will commence on Wednesday, 17th. September. Meetings are held at The Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley at 7.30pm. Admission is £3 for visitors and £2 for members. Visitors are always welcome!!

Whitwick & District U3A The July General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will include a talk by Sara Crofts, Deputy Director of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, East Midlands. Sara describes herself as: “Daft about old buildings.” Come along on Friday 18th July to discover more about Sara’s passion and the varied U3A Interest Groups on offer. A warm welcome awaits. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start at St. David’s Church Hall, Broomleys, Coalville. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society For our meeting on Tuesday 20th May 2014, we were delighted to welcome Richard Buckley, co-director of the University of Leicester Archaeological Services and the lead archaeologist for the Greyfriars Project in the search for the remains of King Richard III, and whose beautifully illustrated presentation on this subject was superb. His enthusiasm for his subject was infectious and his audience was equally engrossed in everything he had to say. Richard began by stating that this project would never have been brought to fruition without the initial approach from Philippa Langley of the Scottish Branch of the Richard III Society. With great determination and patience, Philippa garnered the necessary support of those people who could support and finance the project. Despite various setbacks along the way, the project was launched on 24th August 2012. The rest, as they say, is history! In recounting this amazing story, we were given a brisk journey through the history of Leicester from the Romans and Anglo-Saxons, then on through the centuries with the establishment of Leicester Abbey, other religious houses and Leicester Castle. The influence of the role of the Plantagenet monarchs and the Wars of the Roses were significant in the sequence of events leading to the demise of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. The search for the remains of Richard III was quite remarkable, given the small areas available for excavation and the disturbance to the ground over the centuries, but the amazing teamwork which led to the discovery of his skeleton, so quickly after the trenches were dug, was incredible. The next stage was the detailed scientific work to establish, without doubt, the identity of the skeleton and there is still more data being analysed. Richard and his fellow archaeologist colleague, Mathew Morris, have produced a brilliant book, entitled “Richard III, The King Under the Car Park” which gives an outstanding account of this fantastic story and is available via the University of Leicester Archaeological Services.

The Monday Club, Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston & Rothley Report from the June meeting: “June is bursting out all over” as the song goes, at long last except for the odd showers of rain short and sharp, it felt more like Summer has arrived. It certainly felt that way within the Membership which was buzzing with news of recently taken holidays and those to come, not to mention the eagerly awaited next month’s Strawberry Cream Tea at the “Blue Bell Inn”, in Rothley Continuing on after the club’s “Business” we experienced a very special moment – a presentation to Mrs. Diana Whatton in gratitude for eleven years of faithful service running the “Bring and Buy” table and supplying for every conceivable occasion, quantities of beautifully made cakes and especially, cream meringues!! I think the inserted photograph says it all, taken by fellow member Mrs. Gill Jefferson, our resident photographer. Our entertainment then followed, provided by four Members of the Leicestershire Speakers club. Three ladies and one brave gentleman, told a total of eight stories on which the membership had to decide whether they were “true or false”. We all had cards on which, after each story, we had to mark our conclusion, which took a great deal of concentration. The end result was given by each speaker and prizes were presented not only to the highest points, but down throughout. Very worthwhile prizes were gratefully received. After all this pleasurable hard work, the membership then tucked into a multitude of cakes to consume with refreshing cups of tea. Any enquires concerning information regarding the activities of this club, please contact me on 0116 2363467. Our next Meeting will take place on 11th August – Derek Holloway “Illustrated talk to be selected and announced” Enquiries: 0116 2363467. - Ann Farndon

CHARNWOOD CAPER REPORT Over twenty villages in four counties were treated to a display of Britain’s motoring heritage, as a cavalcade of classic cars passed through them recently, on a journey linking two restored railway lines. The cars were taking part in the Charnwood Caper Classic and Sports Car Run, organised by Hathern-based North Leicester MG Club on Sunday May 18th. It involved eighty vehicles, of which over sixty were MGs. Eleven other marques were also represented, most of which were from the former British manufacturers Austin, Austin-Healey, Humber, Morris, Rover, Triumph and Wolseley. Also participating were examples from Aston Martin, Audi, TVR and Volvo. Starting at Quorn and Woodhouse station on the restored Leicestershire section of the Great Central Railway (GCR), the cars set off at intervals on a sixty mile journey which initially took in Quorn, Barrow, Sileby, Thrussington and Rearsby. Travelling mainly along relatively traffic-free country lanes, the run then went on towards Melton and the Vale of Belvoir, just passing into Rutland and Lincolnshire on its way to the final destination at Ruddington Transport Heritage Centre, near Nottingham. This is on another section of what was once part of the same Great Central Railway line as the start venue. Linking the two railways with the run was symbolic of the planned re-connection of the tracks, which will involve the reinstatement of a bridge in Loughborough where the Great Central used to cross the Midland main line. When complete, there will be over 16 miles of continuous track, stretching from Birstall to Ruddington. On arrival at Ruddington, the participating cars were lined up to allow the other patrons of the centre to admire the display of motoring history, which covered most decades from the 1930s right up to the early 2000s. The oldest car present was a 1938 MG VA Tickford convertible, with the newest being a 2005 MG TF. Once parked, drivers and passengers of the classics were able to take free train rides, thanks to the generosity of GCR Nottingham. Although nearly half of the participating drivers hailed from Leicestershire, residents of another fourteen counties were involved, with Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire being strongly represented. Two drivers travelled up from the south coast to take part, with another three journeying from the east coast. All five of these long-distance entrants were in cars bearing the famous MG octagon badge. Commenting on the day’s event, Colin Readwin, North Leicester MG Club Chairman, said, “With nearly twice the numbers of cars taking part compared to 2013, this year’s Charnwood Caper Classic Car Run has been one of the club’s most successful to date. This success will enable the club to make a substantial donation to our chosen charity, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.” For information about the two heritage railways, visit www.gcrailway.co.uk and www.gcrn.co.uk . Garden Project Success at Woodhouse Day Nursery Woodhouse Day Nursery, a 70 place day nursery located in the quiet village of Woodhouse Eaves, have recently undertaken a £10,000 renovation of it’s outdoor space to provide better learning outcomes for our children. The nursery is blessed with a spacious outdoor area which allows the children to have regular access to fresh air and sunshine – however, the chances to learn new, valuable skills were limited and this gave cause for a Garden Project to begin. The manager and owner of the setting drew up a design for what they felt an outdoor area should offer their littlest learners and contractors were booked to make the dream a reality. The new Garden offers chances to practice gardening skills by learning how to grow and look after beautiful flowers and herbs; offers chances to be investigators by searching for and exploring different bugs, beetles and wildlife; offers plenty of chance to burn off some energy and exercise muscles with the addition of 2 bespoke climbing features; offers the chance to snuggle down with a book in the sunshine and a chance to get messy and wet with the new water wall and sand pits. The teeniest members of the family in our Baby Room and Teddy Bear room can explore their senses with the addition of a sensory area so even the smallest of children can be excited by their new space. They also have access to their very own low level climbing frame to start practicing those early physical skills too.

GARDENS Newtown Linford Open Gardens Under the National Garden Scheme (NGS) six reasonably adjacent properties in Main Street, Newtown Linford, Woodlands, Lincroft, Bank Cottage, Dell Cottage, Dingle House and Appletree Cottage opened their gardens for charity. It was a wet and drizzly May Bank Holiday Monday and we were delighted that just over 700 people came to visit our very varied gardens. The old adage proved correct that keen gardeners are not deterred by the weather. It was for those of us whose gardens were open an enjoyable day and your support was much appreciated. I would like to thank everyone who visited our gardens with their families and friends enabling us to raise a magnificent total of £3478 for the NGS charities. The teas at Bank Cottage and Meadow Cottage organised by Jan Croft, and Michael and Rosemarie Upstone, were a great success and added to the occasion. A special thank you to their helpers and to all of you who made the cakes and also to all those that helped with an emergency accident. In addition we were very grateful to The Linford for use of their car park and also to Malcolm Brewin for use of his Top Field also for parking. The next local NGS Open Garden is at Mountain Ash, 140 Ulverscroft Lane by invitation of Mike and Liz Newcombe on the 6th and 13th July. Make sure you don’t miss it.

Beautiful Local Garden Opens To The Public

A beautiful local garden is opening to the public again in July under the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for several worthwhile NGS charities. Last summer, during two Sundays, Mike & Liz Newcombe welcomed 500 visitors to their Newtown Linford garden and were able to raise £2500 for the NGS charities. The interest in and the enjoyment of this garden has resulted in several local groups, including gardening clubs, arranging private visits to the garden this summer. The Newtown Linford Gardening Club will also, once again, use this venue for their Summer Party on Tuesday 22nd July. On both Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th July the garden, which is situated halfway along Ulverscroft Lane between Newtown Linford and Ulverscroft, will be open to the public from 11.00am – 5.00pm. The 2-acre SW facing garden has stunning views across Charnwood countryside. Near the house are patios, water features, flower and shrub beds, fruit trees, greenhouses and vegetable plots. Lawns then slope down to a gravel garden, a large wildlife pond with waterfall and three small areas of woodland, with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The lower two thirds of this garden has been created since 2004, with over 160 conifers and deciduous trees planted. There are several places to sit and relax around the garden. Light refreshments will be available. There will also be plant sales, a book stall and a craft stall, selling jewellery, scarves etc. Admission for adults is £3.50, children are free and dogs on leads are welcome with well-behaved owners. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US. The full address is – ‘Mountain Ash’, 140 Ulverscroft Lane, Newtown Linford, LE6 0AJ. For further details and some photographs of the garden see the NGS website – www.ngs.org.uk – put either Mountain Ash or LE6 0AJ into the garden finder. Amongst the many charities supported by the NGS are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Carers Trust and, this year, Parkinsons UK.

WISTOW MAZE NEEDS YOU…

This year to mark the centenary of the First World War, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Field Cannon, as a timely reminder of the 16 million people across the globe that lost their lives in this war. “WW1 had such an impact on the lives of everyone – after all it was the bloodiest conflict in Britain’s history, and this year we wanted to create something that would remind visitors of that fact whilst also making it fun and entertaining”, explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. Opening this year on Saturday 19th July, the Wistow Maze features over three miles of intricate pathways carved through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving unrivalled 3D panoramic views.

Diana continues: “In the words made famous by Lord Kitchener, WE NEED YOU to come to Wistow Maze and enter the challenge of finding 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the paths of the giant maze. Each quiz board has a multiple choice question on the First World War which will help to unravel the answer to the quiz trail, whilst providing interesting facts and figures about this world-changing conflict.” An excellent family day out, visitors can not only pit their wits against the maze but can also take part in a variety of mini mazes, games and table top activities in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, ensuring there really is something to satisfy all ages. The Wistow Maze attracts over 15,000 visitors each year and is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction”. At the end of each season, the maze is harvested for cattle fodder and then redesigned the following Spring using GPS satellite technology. Wistow Maze opens on Sat 19th July - Sun 31st August (daily), then weekends only until Sun 21st September | 10am – 6pm | Free Parking | Admission charges: Child £5.50 Adult £6.50 Family Ticket (2+2) £22 More information on: www.wistow.com or ring 07884 403889.

CHARNWOOD MUSIC FOR ALL If you are a lover of Organ Music, then this is definitely the place to be!

Every month, at 7.30pm, on the second Wednesday, there’s a treat in store at The Charnwood Arms, at Bardon, just off the A511. You may be surprised to learn that some of the UK’s top organists perform there. During 2014, these will include Robert Wolfe, Chris Powell Kevin Grunill and Brett Wales – all well-known radio and theatre performers, and, of course, all organists who have spent seasons at Blackpool Tower playing its famous Wurlitzer Organ. In May, the visiting Organist was Markfield’s own Nicholas Martin. Nicholas was resident organist at Turners, Northampton, Blackpool Tower, and Wicksteed Park for many years. His Bardon performance included a medley of well-known waltzes, quick-steps and a tango during which his fingers raced around the keys and stops of his instrument at incredible speed. In addition, with the help of his ‘little black box’, he produced authentic theatre-organ sounds, followed by a heart-stopping selection of music from ‘Les Miserables’. It never ceases to amaze me that one instrument can simulate banjos, guitars, drums, cymbals, accordions, flutes, trumpets, xylophones, triangles, and many other musical sounds. This is what top organists are able to do and the results are truly impressive. Nicholas Martin successfully demonstrated why he is one of Britain’s best known organists and a regular BBC contributor. He concluded with ‘Storm at Sea’. his own compilation, which included: ‘Life on the Ocean Wave’; ‘Hornpipe’; ‘Drunken Sailor’; Sailing’; and ‘My Bonnie lies over the Ocean’. These were accompanied by the sounds of winds, gentle and turbulent waves and periods of reassuring calm. This was certainly a performance to remember and the selection of CDs on sale even enabled us to do just that! Those readers who play their own organ, or simply like to listen to organ music, brilliantly played in a wide-variety of styles, in a relaxing environment, will be entertained and impressed by the talented musicians who perform at these concerts. The next one is on Wednesday July 16th 2014 at 7.30pm when Ian Griffin will be the visiting Organist. The cost is £6 and a bar is available (as are reasonably priced meals, prior to the concert, at the adjacent Charnwood Arms Hotel). For further information please contact Chris Powell on 01530 274270 PLEASE NOTE: August’s concert will be on Wednesday August 20th, 2014 when Kevin Grunill will be our Organist.

Ashby Concert Band - Viennese Delights Ashby Concert Band launched the 2014 Ashby Arts Festival in May with an exciting evening of Viennese waltzes, marches and polkas by, amongst others, the popular composers Delibes, Tchaikovsky and Johann Strauss, both the Younger and Elder. Favourites, such as The Blue Danube, Radetsky March, Tales from the Vienna Woods and The Skater’s Waltz entertained and delighted a captivated audience in a concert at Ashby’s Holy Trinity Church. These well known, catchy melodies have been consistently popular for well over 100 years, not only in the ball room, but in the concert hall too, and they didn’t disappoint on Saturday. Members of the orchestra remarked what great fun it had been rehearsing for the concert, and special credit must be given to their Director of Music and Conductor, Adrian Ashton. Judging by the smiles and comments of the audience at the end of the performance, Ashby Concert Band made for a memorable evening yet again. Their next concert will be on 11th October at St. Helen’s Church, Ashby, with a performance of popular classical music. The Band is always looking for new players, especially in the percussion department. See website for details:

Beauty Secrets From The Expert... Summer is here and Eyelash extensions are in demand! This fast growing part of the beauty industry is becoming one of the most popular holiday treatments, I would say the ‘must have’ for the beach, what better way to look naturally beautiful! This time of year a look that is naturally beautiful, with a barely there make up look is IN sorry but thick, false, heavy looking lashes and brows are OUT. Angel Eyes natural look lashes compliment the pretty beach look perfectly. If you’re jet setting off for a city break our ‘Express Socialite Lashes’ are ideal, wear them with a classic look to give you that city slick edge, they only take 20 minutes to have applied, ideal for a last minute late holiday. Our Angel brow is created to emphasize your natural shape, we work with what you have got and are careful not to alter the natural shape, this avoids a ‘clown’ like appearance. Our water resistant finish is great for the pool, beach and Spa. The Angel Brow will be available later this year! We will keep you posted so you can be amongst the first to try it! All Angel Eyes treatments are ideal for the summer life style. After having Angel eyes applied you can swim, steam, shower and spa just 20 minutes after application, unlike other brands where there is a 24 hour wait. Here are some of the most common myths surrounding eyelash extensions: • You can’t wear lashes in the pool or sea - Wrong you can wear your Angel eyes whilst swimming in the pool or sea • Sweat will make them come off - Wrong sweat does not affect the lashes • Heat will melt them off - Wrong Angel eyes have been tested in dry temperatures as high as 40c • Sun lotion will affect them - Only if you apply directly onto the lashes • You can’t ski in them - Wrong Angel eyes have been tested in freezing blizzard conditions of -30 and confidently survived 80 mph winds allowing our most adventurous clients to carry the look in all extreme circumstances. So whatever you are up to this summer you can enjoy having Angel Eyes! We have an irresistible offer for you to try Angel Eyes Lash Extensions for half price! The Charnwood Trio... This Month’s Feature focuses on a Beautiful Charnwood trio of villages... Rothley, Mountsorrel and Quorn… these villages offer us charm, interest and plenty of local business to cater to our every need...

The Perfect Trio Of Villages... Why not set aside a day to explore our local nest of villages. Find out about their history or soak up the fascinating architecture and beautiful surroundings, taste the local foods, pamper yourself, treat your loved one or see how local services can help you to get on top of that ‘to do’ list! There are so many great shops to visit, both gloriously nestled away and more visibly lining the centres of these villages, there are also plenty of gorgeous green spaces to keep your shopping experience scenic and enjoyable whilst, with the attractions on offer, there’s something to keep the whole family happy. Our first stop is Rothley, a delightful village just two and a half miles from Bradgate Park. This village has a wonderful mixture of small quaint cottages as well as town houses lying within bountiful and beautiful countryside. The war memorial in the village centre at Cross Green is a great place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, especially in the summer. It offers a stunning view of the village and is the perfect place to stop for a rest. We then hop to the next village, Mountsorrel, lying on the main road between Rothley and Quorn. The shops are spread throughout the village but they are easily accessible and close enough to explore by foot, which whilst doing so, gives you the ideal opportunity to take in the village’s glorious sights and surroundings. Quorn is the third of our featured villages. Not only is it a haven for shops, pubs and restaurants but it again has an enviable landscape to be enjoyed. The main road that runs through Quorn has many businesses lining either side of it as well as a glorious church. So why not make yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy looking through this feature to get a taster of what these villages and local businesses might be able to offer you…

Let us start by briefly introducing you to the Templar Chapel at Rothley Court Hotel - in the Middle Ages, Rothley was home to a manor of the Knights Templar, known as Rothley temple, here famous bills such as that raised to abolish the slave trade were written. Rothley’s Grand Central Railway station is also a fine example of history on show, courtesy of its Edwardian station lighting on the station is provided entirely by restored gas lamps in all buildings, and also on the platform itself which creates a quite unique ambience.

Mountsorrel has some great history to explore including the centre of the village where it’s steep hill was once crowned by a castle built in 1080 - Mountsorrel castle, used as a bastion against King Stephen, branded ‘a nest of the Devil and den of thieves and robbers’ was subsequently destroyed in 1217 by the King’s men from Nottingham.

The Grand Union Canal also runs through the village with a perfect and peaceful area to sit and enjoy a beer or coffee and watch the boats go through the beautiful lock. It wouldn’t be right to talk of Mountsorrel’s history without mentioning its famous ‘pink granite’ quarry, or the gorgeous 32 acre wildlife haven known as Mountsorrel Meadows, how about the impressive Butter Market or for that matter Stonehurt Farm, a great place for all the family to explore... now we’ve tickled your taste buds why not go and explore for yourselves!

Quorn is ‘foodies’ heaven, with so many restaurants, pubs and cafe’s to choose from why not take a stroll along the gorgeous river side-walk as part of your perfect summer’s day out. Quorn’s GCR station is also another great attraction - in 1940’s history it takes you on a journey right into the past, with numerous events held throughout the year there’s a little something for everyone to explore and enjoy.
