Another fantastic event on offer this month is Coalville’s Food & Drink Festival, no doubt worth a visit, pop Saturday 23rd November in your diaries or see page 22 for more details. Talking food and drink, how would you like to enjoy a vintage Afternoon Tea? Well, the Shuttlewood Clake Foundation are organising one at Ulverscroft Grange, find out why and when on page 10.
Ever been to one of the local village hall film shows? Well perhaps you should as there’s something quite nostalgic, and dare we say it, romantic, about taking in a flick at either of Thurcaston or Woodhouse Weaves’ offerings. Book early to avoid disappointment – see page 54 and 55 for how to go about it. And finally, a November edition of our magazine wouldn’t be complete without the appropriate Christmas build-up, see pages 36-45 to see what your local businesses and retailers can offer you on the run-up to Yuletide this year – happy shopping!
This month sees us also publicising the all-important fireworks displays: LOROS are holding their annual event at Mallory Park, Grand Central Railways’ takes places in Quorn whilst Leicester’s biggest is in Abbey Park - we’re sure they’ll be a fizzing success…but do remember to keep safe and keep the animals out of the way!

Imagine winning £10,000 cash to spend on anything you like! Or would you prefer to drive away a brand new Fiat 500 this Christmas? That is the choice the first prize winner of this year’s LOROS Christmas raffle will have to make. Not only are LOROS raffles a great way to help fund the vital work carried out at the hospice, it’s a great way to thank supporters by offering a chance to win fantastic prizes. Previous raffles have been incredibly successful and with £4.5 million to raise this year it is hoped that this one will be no exception. Every ticket sold will bring in essential funds to help local people when they need it most. Lottery Manager Liz Singleton says “Our hospice and home support services offer caring expertise to patients and families who may be spending their last days, even hours together, and the thoughtfulness of our supporters across the region will enable us to provide the best possible quality of life during these precious times”. Tickets are available from early October in all LOROS shops or by ringing the LOROS lottery office direct on 0116 2318430 and every £1 ticket bought will help LOROS to continue to provide care across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Charity Pages LOROS Fireworks Event is set to go ahead at Mallory Park!! After news emerged last month that Mallory Park had gone into administration, LOROS were forced to look for alternative venues to host their Annual Fireworks Extravaganza on Saturday 2nd November. Luckily though, LOROS have received the fantastic news that the Administrators, along with Titan Properties, Mallory Park and the Council had made a decision to allow the event to go ahead at Mallory Park. Laura Betts, event organiser said “We are absolutely thrilled and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in making this possible! It is imperative now that we get the message across to our supporters that despite everything they have seen in the media, the event WILL go ahead and it will be at Mallory Park! We have a fantastic evening planned with brand new, award winning firework choreographers and we are confident that the evening will be a huge success. Mallory Park is such an exciting venue allowing free parking for everyone and masses of space for the huge funfair, bonfire, and fantastic live entertainment. We have all worked so hard to put this event together and we are delighted that we are now able to give the community what they want, whilst at the same time raising vital funds for our charity. We are so grateful for all the support we received in our search for an alternative venue. We would especially like to thank Prestwold Hall, Rutland Water, Bosworth Water Park and Pillings Lock Marina for offering their services at such short notice. Mallory Park, known as “The Friendly Circuit” has always been a venue FOR the community and is a venue that is synonymous with thrill and entertainment, the firework event is no exception and organisers at both LOROS and Mallory Park are determined that the event will be as successful as ever despite the current situation. John Ward, Mallory Park Site Manager said; “It had been an incredibly tough month for us but we are all delighted that LOROS will be able to go ahead with their 7th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza here at Mallory Park. We are proud to be associated with such a fantastic event that is so well supported by the local community.” You can purchase tickets for the event now at www.loros. co.uk. Advance family tickets are priced at just £8.
Cards For Good Causes We’ve all seen the offers to Buy One, Get One Free. At Cards for Good Causes we have a slogan of Buy Once, Give Twice. This means that when you buy your Christmas cards from us you are giving once to the person you send the card to and again to your chosen charity. Shoppers in Leicester city centre can buy their Christmas cards from the Cards for Good Causes shop in Leicester Cathedral from Thursday 17 October to Saturday 14 December. Rosemarie Nash-Smith the Leicester Manager said, “We are delighted to be back in the Cathedral for the 15th year. We will be in the north transept of the Cathedral; look for the Santa signs. Local Interest Bradgate Lions Club News We are now into our second month of our new ‘Lionistic’ year, and because of holidays and other commitments we do seem to have made a slow start with our community and fund raising efforts, but having said that, we have attended various village and school fetes and taken a group of 21 special needs pupils from South Gate School to Ashby Statutes, during the last few weeks. We are now ready to hit the ground running with the first of our planned fund raising events, a Comedy and Magic Evening, featuring Joy Henderson, an outstanding local entertainer at Botcheston Village Hall on Saturday October 26th. This will be followed by our ‘Children in Need’ bucket collections in November, and then it’s the ‘Christmas Prize Draw Baskets’ in pubs throughout the area and our Santa Float in Villages in our district. All this will see us through to the New Year and a well earned rest, but we are already planning a ‘Race Evening’ for February 22nd. Again at Botcheston, and possibly an evening of nostalgia, with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s at a venue yet to be decided. More news of this to follow later! Bradgate Lions are involved in all sorts of other activities such as the collecting and recycling of your old Glasses. Mobile ‘phones, Stamps, and Greeting cards. If you have any of these items available, just give Roger a ring and he will arrange to collect them. One of our main initiatives is supplying ‘Message in a Bottle’ and ‘Message in a Wallet’ to any person or organisation requiring them. These are simple tools, either to be kept at home in your refrigerator, or to be kept on your person in your purse or wallet. The Lions Message in a bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal details in a common place, such as your ‘fridge, where they can easily found in an emergency. Likewise the Message in a wallet is a similar device designed to help the emergency services in the event of an accident or emergency. It is a credit size card kept in a in a plastic case, in your wallet or purse. Both of these items are FREE. Some Doctors Surgeries, Health Centres and Chemists will have supplies, but they can easily obtained from your local Lions Club members. If you would like any further information about any of the above item or about Bradgate Lions Club, please ring Roger on 01530 242912 who would be pleased to help. Roger Gamble

Local Interest Grand Central Chorus - A Busy Autumn
The Monday Club, Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston & Rothley On Monday 9th September, the Membership met to support our customary “Bring and Buy Harvest” event in aid of “The Salvation Army” our Charity for the year 2013. There was a very generous display of fruit and vegetables, various cakes, pastries, tins of biscuits, chocolates and books; everything was speedily sold raising the princely sum of £77.15.
The Grand Central Chorus has had a busy few weeks with not only regular weekly rehearsals, including an Open Evening, but also sold out performances at St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray and at Waingroves Methodist Church, near Ripley when they entertained appreciative audiences to a selection from their full repertoire, including the two songs that recently won them a top 20 place in the 2013 International Men’s Barbershop Chorus Championships in Toronto. They also recently sang at the wedding of their oldest member! The chorus will be performing between 1 and 3pm on Saturday 23rd November, 2013 in the centre of Coalville, Leicestershire, as part of the town’s food, drink and music event and on Saturday 14th December, Grand Central Chorus host their Christmas show at Trent College, Long Eaton, when top local women’s barbershop chorus, Gem Connection, will also be performing. Please see our website www.grandcentralchorus.com for ticket details. If you would like Grand Central Chorus to sing at your event, contact Peter on 01530243822 or e-mail publicity. gcc@gmail.com. They can provide either a quartet, small chorus or full chorus of fifty singers as required. Fees are negotiable and quality is guaranteed. The chorus welcome potential new members to come along to any of their weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7.15pm at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ.
After all the activity resembling a “rummage sale” we paused to refresh ourselves with cups of tea and drew the Free Raffle prize which was a box of Lindt Chocolates and won by Elizabeth Meadows. Then commenced our “in house” entertainment; this also was very successful. The first item was a fascinating insight into how Sue Wakerley, our resident Artist of many years, researched and produced stage by stage her Artwork. Sue showed paintings at various stages ranging from photography through to creating outlines and gradually the production of various paintings in the “nearly” finished state to the ultimate finished article. The subjects were various and the audience was left intrigued with the details. We then went on to poetry from various poets including an “Ode to Autumn” written by John Keats and read with feeling by Jennifer Kennington, which reminded us appropriately of the season we have reached after our unusually lovely Summer. Next came a very unusual poem taken from the house of Oliver Cromwell; a copy of which was beautifully read by Diane Rouse; entitled “Tussie Mussies”. These “T.M”s apparently were small nosegays presented to guests of the house and became a popular custom in the 17th Century. The floral/herb contents of the nosegays were understood by the donor and the recipient alike and, of course, could have been hidden messages of love!!
New Greenkeeper at Lingdale
We then enjoyed a very special poem written and read by Gill Jefferson dedicated to “Bradgate Park” beautifully written and so appropriate as the Club is situated at the Reservoir end of the Park and so well known to us all.
Lingdale Golf Club have announced that Simon Graham, the former Head Greenkeeper at The Buckinghamshire Golf Club, has been appointed as their new Head Greenkeeper.
In conclusion I presented my usual miscellany of jokes received from old school friends from all over the world, which produced a great deal of laughter on which to end the afternoon.
Simon has been in that position since August 2008 and during his tenure, has been responsible for hosting Open Qualifying competitions, European Seniors Tour events, the Trilby Tour and in 2012 and 2013, the Ladies British Masters.
We look forward to bringing you our report on the October meeting, when Mr. Brian Kibble, presented an illustrated talk about Anstey and area, from the 1800s onwards.
He looks forward to tending to the beautiful local course. November / December 2013

Local Interest Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society On 17th September 2013 we were pleased to welcome Canon Anne Horton, Rector of St Leonard’s Church, Swithland, who gave a well-illustrated and intriguing talk entitled “The Story of Rothley Plain”. Canon Horton began by explaining that when she first arrived as Rector of Swithland, she took time to explore her parish and those parishes which bordered her own, discovering many historic connections between them because the whole area was once part of the Groby Manor Estate – a fact shown in a survey of 1658. Today, there is little to distinguish Rothley Plain from the general development of Rothley as a whole, but a map of Leicestershire drawn in 1777 by local schoolmaster and clergyman, John Prior, who was born in Swithland, clearly shows the area and its significance as part of the Manor of Groby (or Grooby as it was spelt then). Woodland was known as “a grassy area between woods” and villagers had historic grazing rights for their animals. Over the centuries there were various disputes over the use of the land, mainly between the Babington family of Rothley and the Grey family of Groby, one example in 1749 being over the rabbit warren which was an important source of food supply. Things changed dramatically, not necessarily for the better, when the Enclosure Acts began to take effect from 1750, with Rothley being enclosed in 1782 and Swithland and Thurcaston in 1799. Rothley Plain today is the long, narrow strip of housing on the outskirts of the parish of Rothley, to the west of Swithland Lane, with the Great Central Railway’s Rothley Station at its southern end. In the late 19th century this area became part of the plans for the creation of Rothley Garden Suburb, the vision of the Manchester shipping merchant, Frederick Merttens. He had purchased Rothley Temple as his family home in 1893 and was soon actively pursuing his ambitious plans for rural housing development. Only eminent architects were allowed to submit plans and reputable builders to tender for work – only the very best would do for Merttens’ vision to be realised. The area designated for building encompassed Swithland Lane and The Ridgeway. Initial properties favoured the Arts and Crafts style of architecture and the first three houses were built in 1902. All new houses were to be built primarily for Leicester’s prominent business people and industrialists of the day. At Merttens’ instigation, the Great Central Railway had been routed via Rothley, so anyone taking up residence in these rural dwellings would have easy access to their employment in Leicester, but still be able to enjoy the pleasure of healthy country life. However, due to the country’s financial downturn in the early 1900’s, by 1906, only nine houses had been built. In 1910 a brochure was produced, promising many more amenities such as a school and tennis courts, but the sole project to be fulfilled was the Golf Course which opened in 1911. Some more houses were built, but the outbreak of World War 1 brought a halt to further construction. Later, Merttens’ failing health caused him to return to his native Manchester and he died in 1935. There was further development between the two World Wars and Canon Horton had some photographs of the various properties and some of their residents. Later, significant events which affected the area were the sale of the Swithland Hall Estate in 1954 and the Rothley Temple Estate in 1973. In the 1980’s, David Wilson’s building proposal, “The Gallops”, was turned down, but by the beginning of 2010 the Rothley Ridgeway Conservation Area came into being, its aim “to preserve and enhance the special character of the garden suburb development which began following the opening of the Great Central Railway to the west of Rothley”. Perhaps a little of Frederick Merttens’ vision has been realised by this achievement. Jennifer Kennington Our final meeting in 2013 will be on Tuesday 19th November, starting with a short A.G.M. and followed by the presentation of an “Oral History Archive” by Colin Hyde. Venue: the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston. Time: 7.30pm. You will be most welcome to attend. Visitors: £3. Our first meeting in 2014 will be at the same time and venue, on Tuesday 21st January, when there will be a return visit by the popular speaker, Trevor Parr, and his topic will be “The Civil War in Leicestershire”. Annual subscriptions will be due and potential new members most welcome.

Coalville Food & Drink Festival Saturday 23rd November 2013, 10 - 4pm As part of a series of initiatives to get people back to the high street, The Coalville Town Team have organised a high impact food and drink event in Coalville which will take place in the town centre within the pedestrianised precinct.
Fiery Annual Camp for Air Cadets National Trust Leicester Association In times gone by the family at Calke Abbey wanted to be able to stroll in their pleasure grounds without their view being interrupted by the gardeners. So a 64m tunnel was excavated in 1816 so that the gardeners could go about their business out of sight. It began by the back sheds to the garden and exited in what is now the deer park. In true Calke fashion the tunnel declined in the late 20th century and it has been unsafe to go down for many years. But thanks to help from raffle ticket sales restoration work, carried out by the NT South Derbyshire Building Team, started in May. The tunnel opened to visitors in August and has had fantastic feedback. Calke have thanked everyone who helped make it possible and hope that many visitors will go and experience it for themselves. During this autumn and winter the car park at Calke Abbey is being improved and whilst the work is carried out the main and overflow car park will be closed and temporary parking will be provided on the meadow. The current car park was installed when the property opened to visitors in the 1980s and is no longer suitable. Once completed there will be over 300 extra spaces, but more importantly will be the creation of a pedestrian only route from the car park to the main visitor facilities. The materials being used are locally sourced and two the NT are particularly excited about are Bodpave and Turfmesh. These are special grid systems which will retain gravel and allow grass to grow through, creating a firmer surface for parking without the need for tarmac. All other facilities remain open. The NT Leicester Association will hold the following evening meetings at Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary’s Avenue, Braunstone at 7.30pm: Tuesday 12th November, Illustrated talk “Technology of the English Country House” by Dr Wendy Freer. Tuesday 10th December, Illustrated talk “Mountains, Lochs and Glens” by Stuart Bramwell. There will also be an afternoon meeting at St Guthlac’s Memorial Hall, Holbrook Road Leicester at 2.30pm, on Wednesday 27th November. Helen Peden will present a talk entitled “A Tale about the Tale - Jane Eyre” Admission to all meetings is NTLA members £2.50, visitors £4.00, including refreshments. For details of the NT Leicester Association, please call 0116 222 9133 Alan Tyler, Chairman

A full supporting programme is planned, including a FREE Ice Skating Rink, a FREE Steam Train from the ‘Snibston Discovery Centre’ to the town centre, art, music and entertainment throughout the day – also a crèche where the children can play whilst the parents shop. For every business, there will be opportunities to advertise, promote, invite and entertain. A huge marketing and publicity campaign is in action, with social media driving the momentum. Banners and posters are being put up in the Town Centre and surrounding area. Bookings from traders both locally and from further afield in the UK are flooding in and the Coalville Town Team are working around the clock. Anyone wishing to book a stall can do so via the Coalville Town Team website www.coalvilletown.org and also directly via email at coalvilletowncentre@gmail.com. There are a number of booking options available, traders are simply asked to bring their own table/point of sale equipment and a power supply will be available. Places are limited, so bookings are recommended now to save any disappointment. Join in the fun at www.facebook.com/coalvilletowncentre or Twitter @talkupcoalville.
EMA Community Fund Award Allows Band To Buy New Staging Ashby Concert Band will be able to enhance the way it stages its future public concerts thanks to the East Midlands Airport Community Fund. An award of £500 from the Community Fund has enabled the Band to purchase additional portable staging for its concert performances. The staging allows sections of the Band to be raised higher to improve both the audience’s view and the Band’s overall sound. Director of Music Adrian Ashton said “With a total of over fifty woodwind, brass and percussion players in the Band, sufficient adaptable staging is essential to ensure that all our players can be positioned visibly and effectively in a variety of venues. Thanks to this award, the Band has been able to buy the additional staging it needed”. The staging will be used next at The Palace, Ibstock, on Saturday 2nd November, when the Band is delighted to have been asked by Ibstock Arts to perform a programme of popular music from the musicals. www.thebradgatemagazine.co.uk

Wednesday 27th November 2013
Following a series of informative and entertaining talks given over the last 12 months by Dr Michael Lynch, retired modern history lecturer from Leicester University, a further two talks have now been arranged as follows:
Three prominent local music groups are joining together this autumn to perform Mendelssohn’s dramatic oratorio ‘ELIJAH’. Members of Broom Leys Choral Society and Shepshed Singers will combine to make a chorus of approximately a hundred and will be joined by Charnwood Orchestra as they perform under the baton of choral conductor Andrew Goff. Although influenced by the baroque oratorios of Bach and Handel, with his use of full orchestra and choral colour, Mendelssohn takes us into the early romantic. He tells the biblical story of Elijah in an intensely, almost luridly, dramatic way. Among the episodes are the resurrection of a dead youth, the bringing of rain to parched Israel through Elijah’s prayers and the bodily ascension of Elijah on a fiery chariot into heaven. Perhaps the most dramatic of all is the contest of the gods, in which Jehovah consumes an offered sacrifice in a column of fire after a failed sequence of frantic prayers by the prophets of the god Baal. In addition to professional soloists, the part of the youth will be sung by local choirboy Alex Coles, who is head chorister at St James the Greater in Leicester. The performance will be on November 16th at 7.30pm at Emmanuel Church Loughborough. Tickets £10 (under 16s free) in advance from choir members, 01530 454011 tickets@shepshedsingers.org.uk or 01455 290840 tickets@broomleyschoralsociety.org.uk

Local Gardening THURCASTON & CROPSTON: 30th Annual Produce & Craft Show The 30th Annual Show of the Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club moved from the village hall to the Richard Hill Primary School this year. This proved to be a huge success. Our new home, with its extra space and light and airy atmosphere, attracted a record number of exhibitors. Exhibits were up to their usual high standard and it was most pleasing to see so many people entering for the first time and this was reflected in the winner’s list. Mr Phil Dews retained the Sedgwick Cup for most points overall and the Challenge Trophy for the best points total by a Garden Club member. New names were Mrs Alison Briggs who won trophies for Best Exhibit in Show (3 Roses in 3 Stages) and the Orton Bowl for vase of 3 roses. Mr John Holyoake, entering for the first time, took the Novice Shield for the most overall points scored by an exhibitor who has never won a Club trophy before. The Delia Brook trophy for photography of the year award went this year to Peter Smith, after years of domination in this class by Roy Emmett. Also it was great to see a new name on the Junior Cup, Oliver Keran was joint winner with James Lacey, well done to them both. This cup is awarded to the junior who scores the most points in the adult classes. The children gave us another colourful and imaginative array of entries in the junior classes and a very special thanks to the Girl Guides and the Brownies for their excellent contributions. Cllr. David Snartt was again on hand to present the trophies, many thanks to him for finding the time to “do the honours”. Thanks also go to everyone; exhibitors, visitors and officials alike for their contributions in making it such a resounding success. Delice Deli & Cafe Matt Wright of the ‘Great Food Club’ , www.greatfoodmag.co.uk , introduces us to Delice...
Relax and dine in the café before stocking up on top quality continental and local produce in the deli. Under its French owner’s influence, Delice is a beacon of good food in Loughborough… Delice is a deli and café situated on Baxter Gate in central Loughborough. The town’s only deli, it is a good place to enjoy a relaxed morning coffee before stocking up on fine cheeses, charcuterie, oils and breads, including homemade gluten-free varieties. On one side of Delice is a relatively large café seating area, while on the other is a deli counter selling carefully chosen produce, both local and continental. In charge of selecting the stock are Laurent and Sharon Gerbet, aided by Grant Carter. Laurent comes from Dijon in France, while his partner Sharon and assistant Grant are local to the region. The French part of the trio was once head chef to the admiral on board French aircraft carrier the Jeanne D’Arc. His military experience means he is unlikely to be phased by anything his deli can throw at him. Laurent says: “On the ship I often started my working days at 7am and finished at around 10pm. And on one journey around Cape Horn it was so rocky I was on a drip as I couldn’t eat for two days due to sea-sickness.” These days Laurent enjoys a less stressful life making his own patés and gluten-free breads, as well as seeking out top quality food and drink. His French roots and culinary experience shine through and help to make Delice what it is. “I enjoy French and continental food but I also love local produce,” he says. “We’re always on the look-out for exceptional food and drink made in the region and like to mix the best of local with the best of French.” Hard working and passionate about good food, Laurent, Sharon and Grant take a stall selling fresh bread at Loughborough Farmers’ Market every second Wednesday of the month and run an evening bistro on Thursdays and Fridays. One of Delice’s specialities is raclette – a Swiss cow’s milk cheese heated and scraped out over a plate of charcuterie and vegetables. Delice also offers an outside catering service. Opening times are 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Wednesday; 8.30am to 9.30pm Thursday to Friday; 9am-5pm Saturday; and 10am-3pm Sunday. 7-8 Baxter Gate, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1TG | 01509 210013

SOME FUN CHRISTMAS FACTS. . . The word ‘Christmas’ means ‘Mass of Christ’, later shortened to ‘Christ-Mass’. The even shorter form ‘Xmas’ – first used in Europe in the 1500s – is derived from the Greek alphabet, in which X is the first letter of Christ’s name: Xristos, therefore ‘X-Mass’. Christmas traditions vary from culture to culture. Finns often visit saunas on Christmas Eve, while Portuguese revellers hold a feast on Christmas Day for the living and the dead (extra places are set for the souls of the deceased). In Greece, some believe that goblins called kallikantzeri run wild during the 12 days of Christmas, and most Greeks don’t exchange presents until Jan. 1, St. Basil’s Day. Thanks to their geographic location, most Australians and New Zealanders enjoy Christmas on the beach or at barbecues and Spain hosts the world’s largest lottery. Meanwhile a town in southern Germany has come up with a novel way for people to get rid of their Christmas trees - a tree throwing championships! People just bring along their old trees and see how far they can throw them. There are three different tree throwing categories - ‘Weitwurf’ (javelin-style), ‘Hammerwurf’ (hammer-style) and ‘Hochwurf’ (high jump-style). Each person’s distances are added up to find out the overall champion. Sounds like fun!!

Charnwood Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary GALA concert In a whole year of celebrations, Charnwood Orchestra highlights its Gala Concert on November 30th: 40 years ago its founder and conductor, Jo O’Reilly first raised his baton for this new orchestra in Rawlins College, Quorn. Although the orchestra has undoubtedly moved a long way forward, some of us can still remember our founder most fondly. The concert is on Saturday November 30th in Emmanuel Church, Forest Road, Loughborough and will start at 7.30pm. It is a GALA concert in several ways: we’re having birthday music (Stravinski’s Greeting Prelude); two concertos with two soloists (Saint Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with Tom Bowes as our violin soloist and Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsody with Thomas Caldecote playing clarinet); celebration music (Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and Poulenc’s Les Biches) and to round off what will be a really exciting evening, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas. After the concert, the audience is invited to a (free) birthday party with the players and soloists including a birthday cake, and bubbly. Tickets will cost £15 (concessions £14.00) and £3 for accompanied children under 16. They are available from the Box Office: 07718153117, or by emailing judithrodgers155@gmail.com or from members of the orchestra or on the door. PETS CORNER “Dinner’s In The Dog!” It can be hard to resist spoiling your beautiful fury friend with a special treat from the dinner table. But as wise pet owners know, many human foods can be unsafe for your pet because we have vastly different nutritional needs from them. Even some kinds of food that they love and beg for might wreak havoc on your lovable furball’s digestive system. A Pets at Home survey found 85 per cent of adults admit to feeding their cat or dog non-pet food on a daily basis! Cheese is one of the most popular ‘human foods’ that we give to our pets but both dogs and cats can struggle to process dairy and the high salt content can be harmful to them. Chocolate, coffee and tea are also bad for our fury friends. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical like caffeine, which can kill pets even in small doses. Caffeine itself can lead to heart palpitations and fits. Fruit is also not necessarily good for our pets either and in some cases can cause kidney failure, grapes and raisins are especially toxic and in some cases small dogs have died after as few as four grapes. An unbalanced diet can lead to all sorts of nasty conditions for your pets including chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Pet food is actually more nutritionally balanced than human food. In general we humans tend to eat all sorts of high fat, processed and generally unhealthy foods (including refined grains, white flour, added sugars, chemical food additives and other toxic ingredients) on a daily basis, which, when fed to pets, can end up giving our beloved four legged family members a much lower quality of (and shorter) life than healthier pet food fed pets. So be wise... feed your pet a well balanced specially designed pet food diet and have a healthier happier pet!
