A SURPRISING LOCATION

Our location in the heart of a vibrant city sets Bradley apart. Peoria is a metropolitan area of 350,000 people that is about a threehour drive from Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Bradley has much in common with our home: a diverse population, world-class research facilities, outstanding fine arts and entertainment, and a great sense of community. Bradley’s residential campus is located in a historic neighborhood just one mile from downtown, where the business district and riverfront have been revitalized with art galleries and restaurants. Peoria is home to a number of Caterpillar Inc. facilities and innovative technology companies, as well as three hospitals, including the largest medical center in downstate Illinois.

DOING REAL WORK

Bradley prides itself on having a student body of “doers” rather than observers.

The students provided fully functioning websites for the organization and the theater, easing online ticketing processes and creating user-friendly mobile experiences. How will you know if the major you’ve chosen is the right one? By putting it into practice. How will you gain the experience you need to land a job? By putting your skills to the test.

[ \rē( )l\ adj. —  Actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact; not imagined or supposed. ]

At Bradley, you won’t wait until you graduate to join the real world. You’ll be doing it from the moment you arrive on campus. You’ll quickly become immersed in your major course work, and you’ll be doing real work — in the classroom, in the lab, through internships and study abroad opportunities. All graduates complete at least two real-world experiences and more than 80 percent complete at least one careerrelated experience, such as an internship or practicum. The Springer Center for Excellence in Internships and the Smith Career Center are committed to providing students with opportunities for career-related work experience. The Centers provide resources to help students secure meaningful internships, co-ops and part-time jobs. A centralized Cooperative Education and Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to register their internship for possible credit. bradley.edu/scc

SEEING THE REAL WORLD

For students in any major or discipline, the opportunity to study abroad is encouraged — and in some majors, it’s required. As members of an academic community, we believe students have both the privilege and responsibility to broaden their perspectives by experiencing cultural, social and intellectual environments other than their own. Bradley students have the opportunity to study in every major city in the world, with study abroad programs ranging from a week to a year. During the

January and May/June interims, they can travel with other Bradley students and faculty on a variety of short-term intensive academic programs abroad. And all students can choose to study abroad for a semester or a year. In addition, Bradley’s Global Scholars programs, which are offered to students in most majors, give participants a strong background in global studies by expanding cross-cultural knowledge presented in a global framework.

above: Sojourner White spent a semester studying in Spain and returned the next year as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. One of 46 American cultural ambassadors, she teaches classes, works with student organizations like Model United Nations and spends time giving back to her host community. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience I get to have twice. I was determined to get back to Spain because I felt I had unfinished business there. I thought of things I could have done — or could have done more — while I was there last year.” – Sojourner White, Psychology and Spanish double major

above: Brock Fuhrmann made the most of his 16-day study abroad experience, attending an English class for several hours each day and devoting the rest of his time to experiencing the London area — from St. Paul’s Cathedral to Stonehenge, from the London Bridge to Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea football. “It was a great experience to be embedded in their culture and have the freedom to learn independently while still having engaging class discussions every morning.” – Brock Fuhrmann, Entrepreneurship

GAINING REAL EXPERIENCE

Bradley students build their resumes with real-world experiences gained through internships, on-the-job training and volunteer activities with a wide variety of businesses and organizations — from Fortune 100 manufacturers to small businesses, law offices to hospitals, government agencies to nonprofit organizations.

above: Nursing major Lauren Bilgri made an effort to challenge herself with a wide variety of experiences during her time at Bradley, studying abroad in Rome, volunteering as a childcare worker in Cape Town, South Africa, and working at the local children’s hospital. In South Africa, exposure to the effects of poverty and social unrest on children helped her develop empathy and strengthened her passion for pediatric medicine. Her journey continued after graduation with a job at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. “I came back more receptive and understanding of what people are going through. I’ve seen how things out of our control can put people in unfortunate situations. It’s my job to do whatever I can to help them improve their lives.” – Lauren Bilgri, Nursing

above: Students participating in the Hollywood Semester explore Universal Studios, experiencing the thrill rides as well as watching how actors and filmmakers make movies come to life. The program gives students the opportunity to experience the working world of the entertainment industry and network with the people who make things happen in Hollywood — like Bradley alumnus Greg Dolph, who gave the students career advice and answered questions about his role in Universal’s popular “WaterWorld” show.

LAUNCHING REAL PRODUCTS

At Bradley, entrepreneurship is more than just a program in the business school. A major initiative for the university as a whole, students in all colleges have an opportunity to become entrepreneurs — developing ideas, starting companies and launching real products.

above: Dark is the Night, a board game designed by three junior students in Bradley’s Interactive Media game design program, began as a class project and was published and released nationwide by APE Games.

above: Three Bradley electrical engineering seniors fused their career interests with their lifelong passion for music to develop a novel item that could make dance parties more fun: an advanced gesture recognition glove for disc jockeys. The glove enables DJs to control sound systems through basic motions and different colors of LED lights. It’s a recreational twist on gesture recognition — a technology that relies on sensors to follow commands based on recognized motions. “People in audio engineering or performance may understand one side of the process but not the other. With this experience, I can make the technical parts less complex and help people involved throughout the whole process.” – Evan Leong, Electrical Engineering

above: Bradley students build Peoria’s next generation as mentors in the University’s America Reads Tutoring Program. The program strengthens children’s reading and comprehension skills and encourages youth to value education through relationships with college role models. Bradley students meet with Peoria-area children four nights a week on campus and at three locations in the city’s neighborhoods.

MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

Leadership development is a core value of the university and a hallmark of the Bradley Experience. We believe that leadership is essential to the future careers of our students and the communities where they will choose to live. All student clubs and organizations — from honorary societies to social clubs to local chapters of major professional organizations — are managed and governed by student leaders.

She received the award during the organization’s annual advocacy summit in Washington, D.C., which brought students to the nation’s capital for a weekend immersion in political activism, training sessions and meetings with leaders. “You realize you can make a change if you’re passionate and dedicated to an issue. It’s intimidating to speak to government officials, but it’s something I’m thankful to have the freedom to do.” – Emily Formea, Political Science and Economics double major

Creative art projects like this one tied together a semester discussing environmental issues and the power of art to shape public dialogue. Bradley’s engineering college is sized with you in mind. Engineering programs are inherently very demanding in content as well as pace, and we recognize that a close faculty-student relationship and individual support are very important to student success. You will be taught in small groups, not with 100 other students in a lecture hall. Our faculty, not graduate students, teach, advise and mentor all undergraduates. They know your name and are available to consult on projects and answer your questions. Our goal is to ensure the success of every engineering student.
