Publisher's Note Spring is finally here.

And so am I with a new issue, and a new season clipping at the heels of the old. Many changes have occurred in my life. The New Year brought with it lots of joy, friendship, and time among family. One of my friends was involved in a horrible crash on the Malahat just before New Year. This has made me think more about my life and the choices that I make. She is doing well and recovering. There were other losses during this period which strengthened my belief that one must always enjoy life, for it can be gone in an instant.

So what is stopping you from enjoying all the beautiful people and places we have in this world and your valley? Spring is the time of growth in the natural world: longer days, snow drops, birds again in song. Always remember that it’s the choices we make in life that decide the path we follow, be it easy or hard. So as the spring weather brings sun and warmth and new life to our corner of the earth, we can also experience our own personal growth. I hope you will enjoy some of my new clients with articles like Tina Rader's Nuyam Counseling: A Narrative Therapy and Liz White's Pilates for Body, Mind and Spirit. Returning writers such as Van Isle Vets, Antifreeze and your Pet, Lene Curts, Running au Natural and Esther Kane with Family Cut-offs broaden the reach of the possible and offer us new ways to feel at home.

Pilates for Body, Mind, and Spirit

Liz White MSc

Any holistic wellness program should develop all three components of optimal health: a healthy body, a sound mind, and a joyful spirit. Joseph Pilates, the creator of Pilates, recognized this. While he is primarily remembered for his astonishing repertoire of exercises on strange-looking equipment, he recognized that the body must be cared for, not as an end in itself, but as a means to leading a fulfilling, purposeful life.

The physical benefits of Pilates are numerous: improved posture, flatter abdominals (from working that core!), leaner muscles, increased flexibility as well as strength, and injury treatment and prevention. After several injuries from aerobics, I have acquired an increased appreciation for Pilates as it keeps me fit without muscle tearing or impact on the joints. One is completely supported by the equipment for basic exercises and proper alignment is facilitated.

In Pilates, as in yoga, the mind-body link is established with the breath. By coordinating the breath with each movement, mind and body become synchronized. With Inspired by & featuring the songs of Elvis Presley

can be a gateway to a mindful meditation practice that involves connecting with the inner body The spiritual benefits of Pilates are subjective, of course. For that matter, any activity can be spiritual with intention and awareness. However, the practice of Pilates requires the practitioner to be present in the body and in the moment. Being “in the moment” is itself a spiritual practice. When we are “in the moment” we let go of our thoughts and egos and move into essence. In my experience, Pilates can be a gateway to a mindful meditation practice that involves connecting with the inner body. The test of any program is how the effects spill into your everyday life. Pilates promises to allow you to move freely through your life, with consciousness and clarity. . Visit Liz White’s website for more info:

practice, the movements are performed in a flowing, rhythmical fashion that is soothing to the mind. However, the practitioner must always be conscious of the movements and the muscles involved, thereby improving concentration and body awareness. In addition, the mind is receiving the revitalizing and relaxing effects of deep breathing.

Antifreeze and Your Pet: What You Should Know! By Van Isle Vets With the cold weather upon us it is a good time to review the important facts about antifreeze and keeping your pet safe. Antifreeze, also known as ethylene glycol, is a chemical added to air-conditioning coolants, coolants, brake fluid, heat exchange fluids and of course cold weather radiator fluid to prevent these fluids from freezing. The most common exposure of these products to your pet is by improper disposal or leaking radiators. Antifreeze has a sweet taste and pets will readily ingest it. The lethal dose of ethylene glycol is as little as 2.5 mls or approximately ½ of a teaspoon per kilogram or 2.2 lbs of body weight.

Signs your pet may have consumed antifreeze are: nausea, vomiting, increased thirst, lethargy and in- coordination. Initially (within 30 minutes) your pet may act intoxicated leading to severe debilitation and coma depending on the amount consumed and the age of the pet. Ultimately the metabolism of these chemicals and excretion by the kidneys leads to permanent and irreversible kidney failure.

If you suspect your pet has consumed antifreeze act immediately as life saving treatments can prevent or decrease the damage done to the kidneys. Treatments potentially used by your veterinarian may be: to induce vomiting, administer medications to prevent further metabolism of the chemical, IV fluid therapy to support kidney function and in severe cases dialysis may be recommended. The best medicine is always prevention so have your vehicles inspected routinely, checking your property for dumped or spilled materials, and don’t let your animal roam unsupervised.. Give Your Story Voice, Power Nuyam Counselling: A Narrative Therapy

Stories or narratives are part of our everyday lives. Stories are used to entertain, inform, educate, keep family histories, and bind us together as social beings. Tina Rader

day.

Stories have tremendous power. They can be used in really positive and beneficial ways. Take the example of a child who hears from parents and others they are clever, capable, good and worthy of love. This child will likely become clever, capable, self-confident and go on in life to love and be loved. In other words, the story has the power to create the person. Is your story powerful? Are you impacted by a his-story authored by others?

We read or hear stories, narratives, about politics or the economy, international affairs and the environment in the media every-

We share stories about our daily lives via social media like Facebook or Twitter. Narratives, or stories, give meaning to events in our lives, the relationships we have, how we see ourselves and how others see us. Stories create meaning and give definition to our lives. Each of us is multi-storied, for example; I am a mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, friend, professional and so on. Each story tells a piece of who I am. Taken together they create a more complete story of me though there remain intimate details of my experiences unavailable in any one of these story lines.

Stories have tremendous power. They can be used in really positive and beneficial ways

Sometimes when others tell stories about us those stories may not capture accurately, if at all, our experiences. When this happens the story can have a negative effect. We can feel helpless or powerless to tell our version of events, experiences. Take, for example, the sibling who has broken a window and when questioned by an inquiring parent blames his innocent brother. The innocent sibling feels betrayed by

his brother, wrongly accused and fearful of punishment, thinks he must defend himself and demand justice.

Or the abusive partner who denies their spouse's feelings and experiences telling them they “are wrong that never happened”. The abused spouse feels confused, off balance, self-doubt creeps in and takes over.

Or the child who is abused by a parent and told repeatedly they “are stupid and lazy”. Over time that child comes to believe this story about them and becomes the lazy and stupid child his parent expects him to be. When we are told stories about our lived experience that is at best inadequate and at worst a total lie we want to protest the wrong doing, tell our story, set the record straight, tell the story so it includes our experiences. We have a desire to re-tell the story, to re-author the narrative, ensuring it includes our experience, our truth.

These negative or untrue stories can, over time, become internalized and part of the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The abused child comes to believe he is stupid and lazy, the abused spouse to doubt herself. Negative stories may become highly influential in our lives, informing our view of ourselves, the choices we make, and leave us vulnerable to further abuse.

Nuyam is a Kwak'wala, word that means “the story that travels with you”. I adopted Nuyam as the name of my counselling service after consultation with a respected Kwakwaka'wakaw First Nation elder. As a metaphor, Nuyam, captures the idea I discussed earlier. Stories become constitutive of who we are and stay with us often throughout our lives. Sometimes those stories impede our happiness and health. Sometimes we can re-author our

story and liberate ourselves from the oppression of stories authored by others.

Narrative Therapy does not pathologize, or make the person the problem. It doesn't prescribe, advise, direct. Instead, Narrative Therapy suggests the problem is the problem, acknowledges the client's experience while offering an opportunity to re-author the story, to re-tell it in ways that include our lived experience. It opens space for a new story to emerge, one that is representative of our preferred way of being. It allows us to see ourselves in a new light and affords us an opportunity to re-member our relationships to the people in our lives in ways that free us from the tyranny of abuse, false hope, and lies. In further issues I will talk about the importance of an audience to giving our re-authored stories power in our lives and the ways in which re-membered relationships can liberate. Give your story voice, power, resonance, deeper meaning. For more information, contact Tina Rader at tina@nuyamcounseling.com or 250-338-6312.

Hole in One - Skill or Luck? By Brandon Guile, Golf Instructor In my 30 years of playing golf, and 12 years of teaching, I have had the fortune of making 3 holes in one. An average of 1 every ten years. As I approach my 40’s, I’m confident my next one is due. I’ve had many ‘almosts’ over the years; balls defying gravity on the edge of the cup, smashed rims of the cup, lip outs, off the stick, and so on. There is no better feeling than reaching the ultimate pinnacle on a Par 3. I have been witness to over a dozen hole in ones in my golfing career, even in competition. The average golfer doesn't have a chance to win The Masters or an Open, but they know they might have that one swing. They could hit a shot that can never be beaten. It’s as good as the best players in the world can do in any given moment. Golf is a unique sport in that way. But how much of it is Luck vs. Skill? Here’s my take on the illusive and coveted notch on every golfer’s belt.

»» Tour Players’ odds on making an Ace - Approx 2500 to 1. All other players’ odds on making an Ace - Approx 12,500 to 1. There were 23 Aces recorded on the PGA Tour in 2011. Jim Furyk was the only man to have recorded 2 Aces in 2011; hole 8 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, and hole 5 at the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational.

nament. It was a 172-yard, par 3, “Beat the Pro” hole, so I was participating with each group as they played. A 30+ handicapper stepped up to the tee with his 3-wood and took a vicious rip. The ball soared skyward off the top of the clubface (moon ball), landed on a mound some 30 feet right of the flag, kicked left, and ran straight into the bottom of the cup. There was a lot of screaming and yelling and a giant smile on that player’s face as he pulled out of the driveway with his brand new 26-foot boat in tow! Luck or skill? You be the judge!

But how much of it Luck vs. Skill?

is

It’s a memorable experience for everyone playing in the group. ‘I thought it had a chance’, ‘awesome’, ‘about time’, fluke’, ‘dumb luck’ are all comments I’ve heard immediately after people make a hole in one. We all remember vividly any hole in one we’ve made over the years. All hole in ones are a combination of skill and luck. A 300 game in bowling, or a perfect game in baseball, or a golfer's even more rare double eagle all involve luck but also require much skill.

»» Arnold Palmer has 18. He was 74 when he made his last one, in a casual round at the Bay Hill course in Orlando.

You ask any golfer, 'What are you aiming at?' and they'll say, 'Just gotta get it over the water,' or 'Over the bunker, or ‘A safe spot on the green.' Few people say the hole, and I don't know if this makes sense. When you're hitting a 20-foot putt, you aim at the hole. What's the magic distance when the mind doesn't aim at the hole anymore?

»» Michelle Wie didn't get an ace until she was 12, but has made five since.

Keys to increasing your odds:

»» Jack Nicklaus has 20 aces; his last came in a practice round at the 2003 Senior British Open, when he was 63.

»» Tiger Woods has 18, and his first came when he was just 6.

»» Mancil Davis, who played briefly on the PGA and Canadian tours, has 50, the most for any professional golfer.

CVHRG

The luckiest hole in one I’ve ever witnessed to was at Swaneset Bay in Pitt Meadows during a corporate tour-

5. Visualize the perfect ball flight, bounce, and roll

6. Imagine the feeling of club head path and perfect ball contact 7. Pose!

8. Have a good short game (higher than 50% scrambling statistic) so a missed green isn’t going to cost you as often when you attack flags

People are of two mentalities when it comes to how they approach golf. Some are aggressive, some more passive and protective. I think the best golfers are a happy blend of both, choosing the aggression based on the moment and situation. If you can do this well you will take advantage of your opportunities and limit your chances of big errors. However, to make hole in ones it seems evident that an aggressive approach is more likely to result in better odds. Hogan said he had only two career aces. He was quoted as saying, "I would have made more if I'd aimed at the flag, but I rarely did so." I'm aiming at the target. I’m going with the wisdom of one of the greatest golfers of all time. Why? Because life is short, and I’m an aggressive golfer who wants to make more hole in ones. I'm not trying to hit it 40 feet from the hole, which is probably why I have a good short game!

Let me help you with your short game, scrambling, and putting so you too can be an aggressive golfer and aim at more flags with confidence.

I’d love to hear how lucky, or skillful, your golf careers have been when it comes to the illusive hole in one. Contact me personally and we can build a program that suits your needs. Pilates Power By Rachel Bood & Pat Lewis During the first half of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates developed a system of mat exercises which were intended to improve the efficiency of human movement, strengthen the body as a whole, and challenge the mind. He believed that mental and physical health are inter-related. Realizing that mat alone could not integrate these important principles fully into his students, he invented different apparatus to add resistance and support to ensure these exercises were done precisely, thereby creating a unique set of repertoires meant to work together to achieve a balanced, longer, leaner body. Today the power of Pilates is well-known by fitness enthusiasts and health professionals. It strengthens the core (or powerhouse), improves posture, increases flexibil-

ity, and stability, all as a part of a healthy lifestyle. Pilates is helping everyone from people rehabilitating injuries, to people who just want to round out their weekly exercise regimes, all the way to elite dancers and athletes. Videos are widely available that show you how to exercise at home with just a mat and a few basic props, however, with proper guidance from a qualified instructor you can get a balanced program designed specifically for your needs.

The

focus is on form, function and letting go of old movement habits

Several manufacturers produce Pilates apparatus which can refine and intensify your fitness experience. The Reformer (which has been lovingly described as “The Rack”) has a moving carriage with adjustable springs providing the appropriate tension for a variety of exercises, body types, and abilities. Various lying, sitting, and standing exercises target different parts of the body in a way that is difficult to achieve with just a mat. Putting your feet in the straps allows the legs, pelvis and feet to develop strength and stability while controlling the core.

We also use the hands in the straps to work on upper body and core strength. Stability Chairs have pedals which can be put together or split apart and again use springs to alter tension. Stability Chairs target areas in a way that cannot be done on the mat or the Reformer and introduce new exercises while requiring a more concentrated effort of the core.

The Mat, Reformer and Stability Chair can all give you a good workout. However, the use of these apparatus together, under the guidance of a qualified instructor, can create a workout that optimizes the use of your exercise time as well as providing a more varied experience. At Bodyworx Pilates and Health, we flow from Reformers to Stability Chairs to Mats in each workout with the focus on form, function and letting go of old movement habits. Pilates has been a powerful tool in our lives, keeping us mobile and strong and allowing us to live to the fullest. If you haven’t had the opportunity to dip into the power of Pilates, we heartily recommend you do!. Relief from Hand and Foot Pain When our hardworking hands and feet develop painful problems, our quality of life can be significantly affected. Laser therapy can provide relief for people suffering from painful conditions of the hands and feet such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis and more. Within a few weeks of Dr. Deidre Macdonald treatment, many of my patients Naturopathic Medicine have reported reduced swelling, increased strength and mobility and a return to normal activities.

Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) has been used successfully as a treatment for an extensive range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. This painless procedure speeds the healing of tissues, including cartilage, ligaments, muscles, bursa, nerves, tendons and skin. It enhances DNA synthesis, cell replication, cellular nutrition, circulation and has both anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects. The effectiveness of laser therapy has been well established in hundreds of human and animal placebo-controlled, double-blind studies.

Arthritis of the hands and feet

Laser therapy is an excellent treatment choice for arthritis that has been proven to work in many well designed studies. In animal studies, laser therapy has been shown to decelerate the arthritic process, regenerate worn cartilage, and increase the thickness of cartilage. In humans, a metaanalysis of 36 randomized placebo-controlled trials found that 2-4 weeks of laser therapy offered significant arthritic pain relief compared to placebo controls. Another more recent clinical trial for arthritis measured a significant decrease in pain, reduction of swelling, increased range of motion and circulation compared to a placebo group that was treated with a sham laser. Using a state of the art laser machine, we have helped many people reduce pain and increase mobility in their fingers, thumbs, and wrists

as well as in their ankles, feet and toes. It is very rewarding to witness patients enjoying greater grip strength and mobility and reduced pain and swelling after about 9 to 11 treatments. Even Dupuytren’s contractures in the hands soften and recede with laser therapy.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (hand and wrist pain / numbness)

The treatment of this condition with laser therapy has been extensively studied. In a review of 5 significant studies, it was found that the average success rate was 84%. These patients had experienced pain for an average of two years prior to entering the studies. I have had several patients able to cancel surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome after about 9 treatments with laser therapy. One patient was able to return to pruning her vineyard and was pain free 2 years later when she came back to treat her knees!

Plantar fasciitis

This painful condition affects the bottom of the foot. I usually recommend stretches, exercises and massage for patients with this condition, along with laser therapy. Research shows that patients report significantly less pain after a series of laser treatments. A study showed that 90% of patients experienced relief: 64% of patients had no pain and another 26% were significantly improved. A placebo controlled study found that the abnormal thickness of the plantar fascia was reduced. Unlike other treatments for plantar fasciitis, laser therapy is a painless process.

Achilles tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis can be an acute or a chronic injury. In the chronic state, fibrosis prevents proper function and healing of the tendon. Laser therapy has been shown in clinical studies to reduce inflammatory markers in the

Free Pain Relief Seminar State Of The Art Laser Therapy Rapid healing of wounds, injuries, arthritis, back pain and more. With this painless technology, dramatic and lasting pain reduction can be achieved.

Achilles tendon and to reduce fibrosis. Pain reduction during physical activity has been demonstrated, as has a reduction in morning stiffness. Laser therapy is considered an effective treatment for Achilles tendonitis, and can be added to a program of eccentric contraction exercises for even better results.

Foot ulcers

Chronic wounds and ulcers are a major source of disability for many people. They are notoriously difficult to treat with standard protocols. Often chronic wounds occur on the feet and lower limbs as a result of poor circulation. Diabetes and atherosclerosis are common contributing factors. Laser therapy has been proven to speed healing and resolution of skin ulcers and chronic wounds in research done at Harvard University and other institutions. A triple blind study at Brigham Young University concluded that: “The laser therapy resulted in enhanced healing as measured by wound contraction. These data indicate that laser therapy is an effective modality to facilitate wound contraction of partial-thickness wounds.”

The results from this gentle laser therapy are quite visible in the case of wound healing. There has been photo documentation of many dramatic resolutions of wounds and even of gangrenous toes that were able to be saved from amputation.

So don’t let hand or foot pain slow you down from enjoying life. Laser light therapy is a proven treatment that may be able to help you get back doing the things you love to do. Running au Natural! By Lene Curts, Extreme Runners Let’s face it, we wear shoes. From the time we learn to walk, we’ve had shoes on our feet. Could it be that this isn’t the best thing for us? This has been a very hot topic in the running community for the past several years. As a matter of fact, the barefoot running debate has sparked all kinds of conversation and has even resulted in a shift in the way manufacturer’s are making running shoes. While it appears that most runners could benefit from fewer injuries by adopting a “barefoot” style of running, does this mean we should strip ourselves of shoes and opt for the soles of our feet? After all, that is what our early ancestors did.

The answer is clearly no. Unfortunately our environment does not allow for us to run barefoot safely. Our northern climate is a factor as are the concrete jungles that make up our home. Sure you could run barefoot on a grass field, however you might step on glass or a sharp rock and end up sidelined. The other problem is that to reap the benefits of running barefoot, one has to learn how to efficiently run using the concept of natural or good form running. The majority of folks running (or jogging) strike the ground on the outside edge of their heel. Much research has been done to show that this is not the most efficient way to propel yourself forward. Each

time your foot strikes the ground, there is a slight braking effect which slows down your momentum. The concepts of good form running include utilizing a shorter stride with quicker cadence, landing lightly on the mid foot, and quickly lifting your foot off the ground rather than pushing off with excessive force . With practice, good form running can lead to higher efficiency, which results in less impact and likely fewer injuries.

Most

of us can benefit from a more natural style of running With this concept in mind, many of the technical running shoe manufacturers have introduced new shoe collections that encourage a more natural running style. They achieve this by reducing the height of the mid sole foam at the heel for less interference from the shoe at impact. Conventional running shoes are built with a ramping of 10-12mm. That is, the height of the foam at the heel is usually 10-12mm greater than the height of the foam at the forefoot of the shoe. The rationale is that most runners strike the ground at the heel so greater impact resistance is required there. However, flexibility is required in the forefoot to allow for a strong push off the toes propelling us forward and into the next foot strike. With the new

“minimal” running shoes on the market, the ramping of the shoes are greatly decreased. For the most experienced “natural” runners, there are shoes available with zero ramping, which means there is just a thin layer of mid sole foam between your foot and the ground. For the rest of us, there are shoes available to allow us to slowly transition from traditional running shoes (and form) to a more efficient running style. These shoes are designed with lower ramping (4-8mm) to avoid heel interference at impact, without sacrificing the luxury of having a shoe on (and under) our foot. Saucony, New Balance and Brooks have all embraced this movement and have designed shoes for all levels of natural runners without doing away with their conventional shoes for those who just want to lace ‘em up and head out. Nike has been in the “barefoot” market for years, designing the Nike Free which sparked interest in the natural running movement before others were even thinking about it.

I do think that most of us can benefit from adopting a more natural style of running, but that doesn’t mean you toss your shoes and head out the door. Research is your friend. There is an abundance of information available on how to practice “good form running” and how to transition safely, and injury free, to a more natural style of running. Extreme Runners is planning an info session this Spring with guests from our running shoe manufacturers on hand to share their products with you and answer all your questions.

Family Cut-Offs

Esther Kane

Registered Clinical Counssellor

I thought I’d start the New Year off by addressing a phenomenon that is quite common after the holidays - family cut-offs. I am referring specifically to the conscious decision a person makes to cut off contact from another family member for a time. This can range from a few days to an entire life. As a family therapist, I am constantly working with cutoffs and they are very tricky to navigate.

Most people I know have been at one or both ends of the cut-off continuum. Either they have had to end contact with a relative because it is abusive and harmful to their well-being, or they have been cut off by another relative and are deeply afflicted as a result. Having worked with both sides regularly over the years, I can honestly say that neither is a picnic. Whether you have cut someone out or have been the one cut out, grief and angst are experienced. These various forms of cut-off often lead people straight into a therapist’s office due to the painful feelings that arise. I am going to focus on what to do if you are the person who has been cut off by another family member. I have never seen anybody in so much emotional pain as when hearing a story about how their daughter, mother, sister, or another close family member has stopped talking with them. The look of anguish, deep sadness, and often bewilderment, can be heart wrenching to witness I don’t feel that it would be productive to discuss the how’s and why’s of a family member cutting off contact, for they are various; sometimes justified and sometimes not. What I do feel would be helpful, is to share some of the tools I offer clients who are at the receiving end of a family cut-off. The fact is, whether it makes any rational sense or not, understanding why someone cut you out

isn’t going to make them start communicating with you again, nor will it ease the discomfort of being cut off in the first place. Sometimes things just don’t make sense and no amount of reasoning can help the situation.

If

you are experiencing a cut-off from someone you love, it’s a really difficult situation to be in Here are some tools you (or someone you care about) can use the next time a family member cuts you out for whatever reason: 1.

Let go - along with prayer, letting go is powerful in healing a cut-off. Know that you cannot control the other person who cut you off, but you can control how you choose to deal with the situation. You can either hang on for dear life, while continuing to suffer greatly, or you can loosen your grip, send that person love, and focus on living your life and being good to yourself.

2.

Pray - even if you aren’t religious, the relief found from ‘handing it over’ to something greater than yourself is often astounding as well as being nurturing to the soul.

3.

Grieve - this is absolutely mandatory, especially if

4.

Write letters you don’t send - this is very therapeutic because when you have been cut off from

you don’t want to be cut off from this person. Anytime someone we care about leaves (whether through death, divorce, or cut-off), we experience great loss and bereavement. Let yourself feel the pain of loss by crying, licking your wounds, and feeling the sadness associated with the loss. It helps to move through the pain in the long run.

Diabetes: Walking on a Foot Time Bomb By Sheila Cameron, RN The most common reason diabetics are hospitalized in North America is foot infections. Diabetes can be dangerous and devastating to your feet. In fact over two million Canadians have diabetes and over 700,000 have it but don’t know it. Add poor circulation and lack of feeling known as peripheral neuropathy and you have a time bomb that could lead to foot ulcers or amputation if you don’t defuse it.

What is the Risk?

»» control your blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol Footwear:

»» ensure your shoes are professionally fitted, with poorly fitted shoes blisters or open sores can form in less than an hour, a small problem that leads to more serious ones »» shake your shoes and feel the inside before putting it on to avoid any foreign bodies such as stones or something in the shoe lining that could cause a cut, abrasion or sore spot

When blood sugar levels are not well controlled, damage can result to the blood vessels and nerve function causing gradual loss of feeling in the limbs. Loss of the feeling in the feet is call “neuropathy”, which is the name given to damage to the nerves in the feet. This is caused by poor blood supply or “ischemia”. This occurs when arteries become narrowed or blocked so blood cannot flow easily. It can also be made worse by smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Neuropathy can cause the nerves to “go haywire”, or transit impulses that you experience as numbness, tingling, shooting pains, burning sensations, pins and needles, electric shock sensations or a combination of the above. When you loose the feeling in your feet, you are unable to detect when an injury occurs. A small seemingly innocent cut, improperly cut toenails, extreme heat or cold, poorly fitted shoes or foreign objects such as pebbles - if left untreated can cause sores, infection, and lead to a life threatening foot time bomb.

»» wear clean socks that “wick” moisture away and that are not too tight

A Foot Care Nurse can play an important role in assessing and providing some basic preventive measures

»» ask your doctor or foot care nurse for a monofilament test to help determine signs of neuropathy

»» avoid going barefoot or wearing open toe shoes Foot Care:

»» do routine visual inspections of your feet, with a mirror to see the bottom of your feet. Look for signs of redness or blisters on your feet »» wash your feet daily, dry well especially between your toes and apply a moisturizer to your feet but not between your toes »» cut your toenails straight across or have a foot care nurse assist you

»» never trim corns or callus and never use over the counter medicated corn / callus / wart removers

How Can You Prevent This?

»» if your feet are cold wear clean socks to bed; use of a heating pad or hot water bottle could burn your feet without you realizing it

General Health:

What can you do if you have Foot Problems?

»» stop smoking, as every cigarette helps to constrict the blood vessels which decreases the circulation to your feet and increases the chances of non healing wounds »» adopt healthy lifestyle choices in your diet and physical activity level

Workplace Ergonomics By Dr. Debbie Wright, Chiropractor

Telephone

As your workload increases, so do repetitive actions like keyboarding and answering the phone. These routine tasks can add a level of physical stress to the emotional and mental stress of getting the job done. In fact, repetitive strain injuries have skyrocketed in the last two decades due to the increasing reliance on workplace technology. The good news is that a few simple changes to your office set-up can help make your job easier, safer and more efficient.

Use your hand to support the telephone against your ear and alternate sides regularly. Do not cradle the phone between your ear and your shoulder. If you are on the phone a lot, consider using a headset or speaker to reduce strain on your neck and arms.

Chair

Sit upright and all the way to the back. Place a support cushion or roll against the arch of your back for lumbar spine support. Here are some tips to help you adjust your chair:

1. Stand in front of the chair and adjust the height so that the highest point of the seat is just below your kneecap.

repetitive strain injuries have skyrocketed in the last two decades due to the increasing reliance on workplace technology

2. Sit on the chair and make sure that your knees are bent at approximately a 100 degree angle when your feet are flat on the floor.

Keyboard

Position it above your lap. Ensure that you can type with your arms relaxed, close to your body with elbows bent at 90 degrees and wrists level.

Computer Monitor

Position it directly in front of you. Keep it free of dirt and smudges in order to reduce glare. Allow the muscles in your eyes to relax by following the 20/20/20 rule: take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and focus on an object that is at least 20 feet away from you. Make sure to use proper corrective eye wear to avoid leaning or straining forward to see the computer screen.

Mouse

Some workers have a vice-like grip on the mouse. Try using a light grip to avoid strain. When you move it around, use your elbow to guide it instead of your wrist.

3. Adjust the backrest forwards and backwards as well as up and down until it fits the hollow in your lower back.

4. Sit upright with your arms hanging by your sides. Bend your elbows at about a right angle and adjust the armrest height until they barely touch the undersides of the elbows. Remove the armrest from the chair if the right level cannot be achieved or if the armrests, in their lowest adjustment, elevate your elbows even slightly.

Take A Break

Try not to sit in any one position for a long period of time. Take a quick stretch break or change position every 30 to 45 minutes. For a quick and easy stretch, stand up and raise your arms above your head. Dr. Debbie Wright at Bayview Chiropractic: 250-334-4844  drdebbie@bayviewchiro.ca

Heather's Holistic Hints By Heather Saunders, RMT The Benefits of Registered Massage Therapy

Do you ever have a persistent headache? Maybe you have muscle spasms. Perhaps there's a constant ringing in your ears. What if a past injury gets reacquainted and is cranky with the slightest provocation or you don't want a new injury to become a chronic problem. Maybe you just have a lot of stress in your life, sit at a desk all day and find your posture less than desirable. What if these distractions could stop playing a leading role in your day-to-day life?

More and more studies are showing that massage therapy is an answer for many people's complaints. It has been shown to reduce pain, manage chronic problems, increase range of motion, decrease stress and anxiety and help to create a better quality of life.

By becoming aware of our bodies and addressing problematic areas, we prevent the spread of pain and dysfunction. Massaging the muscles and gently manipulating the joints involved in creating pain allows function and alignment to return. When we are no longer favouring a muscle group or a limb, we can use our bodies to their full potential with less pain.

Many symptoms, if caught early, can be reversed and prevented from recurring. Sadly, some conditions such as Parkinsons and multiple sclerosis are not reversible, however their symptoms can be alleviated and managed through massage therapy. People living with fibromyalgia find great relief from a monthly massage. Those who have limited control over their limbs due to conditions like strokes or cerebral palsy find increased blood flow and passive joint movement highly beneficial. Joint distraction and lymphatic drainage relieves pressure in achy, degenerative or injured joints. The effects aren't all physical either. I have personally witnessed many people have a change of mental and emotional outlook as their pain has receded into the background. They can function freely and feel better about how they spend their days. Some rediscover old hobbies they loved but couldn't do for the longest time. Most never realized their pain contributed to their unhappiness and didn't realize how unhappy they were. When symptoms are more acute, intense or restrictive, the first treatments may be more frequent. Once symptoms subside, appointments can be spread out. Many people have discovered the benefits of “maintenance” appointments. Going for a 30, 45 or 60 minute massage once every month or two has been shown to prevent (re)

Emotions can be useful or destructive. Destructive emotions often lead to long-term negative consequences. It is important to know that emotions are complex and that we have both primary and secondary emotions. Primary emotions can be ignored or overshadowed by secondary emotions such as shame, guilt or anger which then cause problems.

Changing behavioural patterns is a hard task, especially if your emotions are ruling you and you are living with emotional suffering. Individuals with emotional suffering need to learn how to reduce their feelings so their feelings are manageable. The feelings are still there, but your emotions are not feeling larger than you. If they feel larger than the you this leaves you feeling emotionally vulnerable.

Regulate

your emotions in order to live a life worth living I am not saying you must “not feel” in order to regulate emotions, but to learn skills to regulate your emotion in order to live a life worth living. First we have to learn how to validate ourselves emotionally. . »» There is no right way to feel in every situation »» I can let others know what I am feeling

»» Negative feelings are not bad or destructive (behaviours can be)

»» Emotions are not stupid

»» Painful emotions are important to validate

Emotions consist of several different reactions happening at the same time. Body changes such as tensing or

Don’t Make Your Body Say NO! relaxing muscles, change in body temperature, and heart rate fluctuations are just a few. Facial muscles also play an important role in emotions. Sometimes the problem with emotions is that you have difficulty sensing the changes in your body. 1. Observe and describe your emotions just as they are 2. Once a tissue has taken up its maximal capacity of elasticity it will begin to plastically deform. When deeper tissues such as the spinal dura deform there is an abnormal pull put in to the entire spinal system. If the tissue surrounding the brain has been over stretched and torn (a scar will form) this will cause a tension through the entire spinal dura all the way down to the tailbone.

This constant tension over time will result in a gradual loss of motion or decreased function in the body. So having the symptomatic joint or muscle worked does not always completely or permanently alleviate the symptom. Symptom management is very helpful to decrease discomfort but to resolve the cause of the symptoms takes a more detailed approach to rehabilitation. The neural tissue torsions can be held in the body for years even decades sometimes and slowly but consistently diminish a person’s range of motion strength and overall tolerances for future injuries and strains. “I am just getting

Know The Moon Cycle & Change Your World Our world changed yesterday; it is changing today and will change again tomorrow. No sense waiting until December, 2012 for some cataclysmic event, because life and amazing consciousness altering events are occurring around us on a daily basis. Each time another individual develops the self-discipline of being, and Phyllis Chubb acting, in a conscious way the Vedic Astrologer , MA, CAP world changes. There is an adage we’ve all heard, “To everything there is a season” and the season for consciousness has arrived and Jyotish provides the map for all who will look. How does this happen? It is through an ancient binary system called the Asktakavarga that each person can see their ‘mood’ patterns. Our moods are a reflection of lunar energy. The intensity of the lunar energy is vitally important because there is a direct relationship between our moods and our likely actions.

Examples showing the importance of knowing our mood cycles will follow, but first an explanation of the graph to be used. Monthly cycle: Each square passes in 2 ¼ days.

The 12 columns across the top of the graph represent the 12 signs through which the Moon travels as it circles the earth each month. The rows, from 0 to 8, are measures of strength. The line under number 4 represents a normal mood, line 5 a high normal and line 3 a low normal mood. Lines 2 – 0 are increasingly poor whereas lines 6 -8 are representative of increasingly high moods. As much as we all like to feel good lines 7 and 8 can be dangerous insofar as over optimism often accompanies these levels. Lines 2 – 0 show increasingly poor or negative energy levels and it is in these areas where ‘bad’ moods occur. Two factors to remember: cycles are unique to each

individual and are based on their accurate birth charts. Secondly, an individual can actually feel their own cycle once they become conscious of it. Let’s see a combination of a couple’s mood cycles in action.

Our

moods are a reflection of lunar energy

These two graphs are of a couple who have been having relationship challenges. Compare the difference in mood levels and the challenge becomes readily apparent. Is it any wonder they are having difficulty given the differences in their mood cycles?

Once they have been able to recognize their personal cycles and acknowledge the difference between their cycle and that of their partner, life becomes much easier for each of them. Why? They can see how each one of them is acting normal, normal for them. When one is quiet and somewhat withdrawn it isn’t because they don’t love the other one. It’s because they need to be quiet at the moment. Likewise, when one partner is filled with optimism they really don’t need the other person to agree with them all the time.

Circulation: Improving your flow of love This past winter I was walking with my 7-year old daughter, carrying a heavy bag between us. She twisted the straps around her hand to get a better grip and I quickly expressed concern that she might cut off the circulation in her hand. And so she asked me… “What is Circulation Mom?”

My anatomy and physiology training sprang to the tip of my Cranio Sacral Practitioner tongue but I paused for a moment, took a breath and thought about it before speaking. “Well, in general, circulation means ‘flow’. But I was talking about your blood moving through your body. Your heart pumps your blood throughout your body, bringing oxygen and important nutrients to all of your tissues. So it can hurt parts of your body if your heart can’t pump the blood there”. She paused for no longer than a couple of seconds and summarized “ So, circulation is your heart moving through your body?” A huge smile spread across my face and I immediately agreed with her. Catherine Dextrase

There are so many benefits already known for improving the blood circulation in the body; more oxygen, more nutrients, better waste removal, faster healing. But what

about shifting gears a little bit and seeing from a child’s perspective what the heart’s real job is – to spread the love throughout your body from every large artery to each tiny capillary so that our whole being can be nourished, cleansed, and loved.

The next question is how do we actually improve circulation in the body? Exercise is the #1 way to get your heart pumping! Diet can also help support the health of your entire circulatory system (things like cayenne, ginger, garlic and ginko biloba do stimulate blood flow, strengthen blood vessels, and cleanse the system), however there is no substitute for Aerobic exercise. Swimming, biking, walking, running, dancing- whatever floats your boat and gets you moving. Gentle stretching and Yoga can also help to improve circulation. Anything that increases your heart rate and gets you moving is good for supporting the circulatory system in your body. I am tickled at this new perspective on the importance of circulation. As my heart beats on, strong and steady I feel love moving into all of my tissues along with those rich nutrients from all the good food I have eaten and all the oxygen from all the clean valley air I am breathing. Sometimes taking a different perspective on things is as important as the food we eat, the water we drink, the exercise we choose and the air we breathe. And children remind us to come back to a simpler view on things. Love, eat, breathe, and circulate!. Market Volatility Planning For many people, market volatility is more like an idea than an experience. If this is true for you, your expectations for long-term returns may be out of sync with historical standards.

Volatility is quite simply the ups and downs of the markets. Part of my role as an Investment Advisor is to be your reality check when it comes to investments.

decisions when the market gets choppy.

Experts agree that trying to time the market doesn't work. Test your comfort level when you buy investments. How would you feel if its price fell twenty percent tomorrow? Only buy what you'd like to hold.

For many of my clients, market volatility is an opportunity to buy investments at bargain prices. But you can only do this bargain shopping when you're prepared and you have the money. How prepared is your portfolio for a volatile market? Is it time to consider your holdings, their ability to weather the storm and your position to bargain buy? Seven Simple Things to Improve Your Nutrition So, some time has passed since that New Year’s resolution and you feel a little off track, right? It can be difficult to stay on top of good health and nutrition, especially when the variety of ideas and programs that we are exposed to are confusing, even overwhelming. Fortunately, there are some really basic things that Christina Willard-Stepan you can do to maintain good, Seeds Food Market sound nutrition year-round without worrying about having to be an expert. Nutrition is more than a "diet" — it's a journey toward a healthy lifestyle that you can embark on today, just by following a few simple guidelines.

Cook at home. One of the easiest ways to boost your nutrition is to eat most of your meals at home. Home-

cooked meals are generally lower in fat, processed carbohydrates and sodium than restaurant and fast-food meals. You will also save money and avoid those super-sized portions by dishing up just the amount you need. (Even better if you are able to use ingredients you have grown yourself!)

Eat less meat. This choice is good for you and for the environment. Even if you love meat, a vegetarian meal once or more each week can do wonders for your health — and your wallet. Choose foods that are high in protein but low-cost, such as legumes. Consider it a fun challenge – it will introduce you to interesting new recipes and foods you may not have tried before. Eat more raw food. Although some people choose to experiment with an entirely raw food diet, it does not have to be all or nothing. Just eat MORE raw food. Exercise at Altitude

Sarah Seads Kinesiologist

Although the human body tolerates small fluctuations in air pressure, large variations pose special problems. This is evident when mountain climbers ascend to higher altitudes where reduced pressure can substantially impair physical performance. This article looks at the special characteristics of high altitude, hypobaric (low pressure) environments and how these conditions effect the human body.

At sea level, the 'barometric pressure' averages about 760mmHg. At the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth (38.6km), the pressure exerted by the air is only about 250mmHg. Although barometric pressure varies, the percentage of gases in the air that we breathe remain unchanged from sea level to high altitude. At any elevation, the air contains 20.93% oxygen, .03% carbon dioxide and 79.04% nitrogen. However, as barometric pressure drops so does the pressure of oxygen that reaches the lungs, as well as the gradient between the lungs and blood and the blood and the muscles. Translation: you feel the unpleasant effects of oxygen deprivation, also known as 'hypoxia'.

body's way of increasing the concentration of red blood cells (which carry oxygen), allowing more oxygen to be delivered to the muscles. Long term exposure to altitude results in additional changes including increased red blood cell production. However, these changes are slow, taking weeks to months to fully restore red cell mass. Acute altitude sickness is characterized by symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), and insomnia. These symptoms can begin anywhere from 6-48 hours after arrival at high altitude and more most severe on days 2 and 3. Although not life threatening, altitude sickness can be incapacitating for several days or longer. In some cases the condition can worsen. In some cases, if steps are not taken to control altitude sickness, more lethal illness including pulmonary edema or cerebral edema can develop.

The human body responds instantly when exposed to high altitude. Within seconds of exposure, receptors in the cardiovascular system stimulate the brain to increase breathing. The increased depth and rate of breathing helps to offset the decrease in oxygen pressure in the body and the negative effects that go along with it. Within the first few hours of arrival at altitude, a person's plasma volume begins to progressively decrease and it pateaus by the end of the first few weeks. This decrease in plasma volume is the result of respiratory water loss (water in the air we exhale) and increased urine production. Essentially, dehdration of the body occurs resulting in a reduced total plasma volume of up to 25%. This is the

The incidence of altitude sickness varies with the altitude, rate of ascent and the individual's susceptibility. Studies have determined that at elevations of 2, 5003,500m the incidence of altitude sickness is about 7% for men and 22% for women, but the reason for this difference is unclear.

evidence indicates that superior physical conditioning prevents the symptoms Headache is the most common symptom associated with ascent to high altitude. The headache at altitude, which many sufferers describe as continuous and throbbing, is typically worse in the morning and after exercise. Alcohol consumption worsens the symptoms. How can you avoid acute altitude sickness? No evidence indicates that superior physical conditioning prevents the symptoms and some data suggests that young, fit individuals may be more prone to experiencing symptoms.

the risks of altitude sickness. Speak to your doctor about drugs that have been used to reduce the symptoms. Currently acetazolamide started the day before the ascent is the established preventative measure. The definitive treatment for severe altitude sickness conditions such as pulmonary and cerebral edema is a retreat to lower altitude. People can usually prevent acute altitude sickness and enjoy the mountains without enduring severe symptoms by gradually ascending to altitude and spending periods of a few days at lower elevations.

Bee Stings and Your Pet By Van Isle Vets During the summer months, bee sting reactions are something we see quite regularly at Van Isle Veterinary Hospital. However, as the summer slows down, so do the bees. As we creep into September, those pesky bees which have been playing a taunting game of "cat and mouse" with your canine companion are now incredibly easy to catch! Going out into the back yard to find your dog puffed up like a marshmallow may seem a bit comical at first, but it can also become quite scary. As a dog owner it is important to ask yourself if you know what to do if your dog swallows or gets stung by a bee. Will you be prepared if this happens while on a family camping trip or in the wee hours of the morning? The majority of bee sting reactions occur around your dog's mouth and/or face. This is mostly due to your dog snapping at bees as they buzz by or from accidental encounters while their nose is to the ground sniffing all those wonderful scents in your backyard or at the park. Some dogs can have very mild reactions such as a slight swelling of the muzzle or face; others can be quite severe involving blistering, seeping hives and massive swelling of the muzzle, face, eyes and throat! Some dogs can even develop symptoms of shock, much like their human companions. Whether the reaction looks mild or severe, it is always recommended that you call your family veterinarian as soon as possible to get advice. In the case of a severe reaction, don't waste time, head to your family vet. In some cases go directly to the closest veterinary hospital. It is also a good idea to ave someone call ahead on your behalf, advising the hospital that you are on your way. Most bee sting reactions can be treated fairly easily and quickly once you've arrived. This usually involves an exam by your veterinarian to make sure your dog is not exhibiting any signs of shock and that there are no concerns with his airway. Once examined, your dog will most likely receive an injectable antihistamine after which you'll be asked to wait with your dog so your veterinarian as well as the support staff can monitor your dog to make sure the swelling/reaction is subsiding. You may also be given some oral antihistamines to continue treating your dog from home. The more severe cases can involve things such as hos-

pitalization, IV fluids, emergency care such as placing a breathing tube and overnight care. However don't let this scare you. Even though it can be impossibe to completely avoid a confrontation between your dog and a taunting bee, most reactions can be treated fairly easily.

when it comes to bee stings, most dogs just never learn If you've experienced a bee sting reaction with your dog in the past or have seen your dog snapping wildly at the air trying to catch a bee, you may want to be proactive and keep an oral antihistamine such as Benadryl on hand. If your dog always goes where you go, then keeping some antihistamine in your travelling first aid kit, in the camper or even in your backpack is never a bad idea. Always contact your veterinarian before administering any medications to your pet to make sure what you are using is appropriate and that you are giving the correct dose. If there is one thing we have seen over the years at Van Isle Veterinary Hospital, it is that when it comes to bee stings, most dogs just never learn. After going through a painful sting, a swollen/itchy face and even a traumatic trip to the vet's office...by the time they get back home they are already on the hunt, waiting for their next target to buzz by! If you would like more information on what you can do in the event of a bee sting, call your family veterinarian or give us a call. Contact Van Isle Veterinary Hospital in Courtenay at 250 334-8400.

How to Add 7 Years to Your Life Compiled by Allan Gear Want to add seven years to your life? A study by a team of experts, including researchers at Harvard University, concludes you can do just that by eliminating well-known risk factors. Here are some of the steps you can take to live longer. 1. Lose excess weight. Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The Harvard study recommends maintaining a body mass index (BMI) of no more than 21.

2. Control blood pressure. If you are unable to control blood pressure (hypertension) through decreasing dietary fat and sodium, and increasing physical activity, talk to your doctor about the available medication.

3. Reduce high cholesterol. If the level of cholesterol in your bloodstream is putting you at an increased risk of developing heart disease, you need to do something about it. Start by cutting transfats (still found in some baked goods) from your diet, and limiting saturated fats (found in some meats and cheese) that raise levels of the “bad” LDL cholesterol. 4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Mounting evidence points to the ability of these foods to lower the risk

of colon cancer and heart disease, among other disorders. Try to get at least 600 grams every day (that’s at least 3 cups) by adding a salad to your evening meal, serving bite-sized veggies for snacks and adding more of them to your soups and stews.

5. Be more active. You should be physically active at least two to five hours a week. The experts call for “moderate” exercise so you don’t have to become a mountain climber or a marathon runner. 6. Quit smoking. No doubt you’ve tried many times before, but it’s worth another shot for the sake of your health. Have you given the gum, the patch or other cessation aids a go? Turn to your family, friends and family doctor for support.

7. Ease up on drinking. In small doses, alcohol may be beneficial to your health, but more than one or two drinks a day can increase your risk to heart disease and cancer. Try to eliminate or at least cut down on your consumption.

8. Don’t do drugs. Using illicit drugs significantly increases your risk of dying young. If you have a problem, tell your doctor who can point you in the right direction to start on a new, healthier path. 9. Practice safe sex. With any new relationship, be sure to use a condom and get a test for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Spring Detoxification By Dr. Erika Kneeland, Naturopathic Doctor Spring is an excellent time to start thinking about a detoxification program. Fresh vegetables are beginning to shoot up from the ground, and many of the spring vegetables bear the perfect nutrients to assist with detoxification. This article will describe the key components of a successful detoxification program. The first aspect to consider in a detoxification program is what toxins are in your environment that you are continuously being exposed to. Identification and removal of sources of toxins is key. Toxic substances can be from the external environment, the internal environment of the body or from the mentalemotional system.

An external toxins like mercury, for example, is found in many types of fish and in high-fructose corn syrup (unfortunately, high-fructose corn syrup is a popular ingredient in processed foods designed for children). Pesticides are found in non-organic foods, especially coffee, tea, spinach and fruit. Bisphenol A is found in hard plastics, and released at a greater degree when heated. Parabins are found in many personal care products such as moisturizers, perfumes and toothpastes. Pthalates are found in soft vinyl children's toys and body lotions. Internal toxins include the by-products of metabolism produced in the body, for example: lactic acid is formed when the body breaks down carbohydrates to use for energy during times of low oxygen levels. Uric acid is created when the body breaks down purines from food like

beef, bacon and beer. Free radicals are atoms, molecules or ions with unpaired electrons. When in excessive amounts, free radicals can cause cell injury and diseases such as cancer, stroke, myocardial infarction and diabetes. Mental-emotional toxins are often unidentified sources of stress and can include things like having poor boundaries (saying yes when you really want to say no, and feeling resentful about it later), negative thinking, poor self-esteem and unhealthy relationships. Utilizing objective scientific laboratory testing (for example a blood, saliva or urine test) in combination with a comprehensive assessment of a person's individual symptoms is a good way to determine toxicity levels. Some of the signs of toxicity or poor elimination of toxins are fatigue, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, joint pain, skin conditions, sighing, weight gain and inability to lose weight.

How

do we know if we have toxicity in our bodies?

What are the effects of toxin accumulation in the body? Toxins place a greater burden on the organs of elimination in the body, which can lead to the development of disease. Toxins prevent proper cellular energy production, making us feel tied and lethargic. Toxins are primarily stored in fat and organ tissue and often lead to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. They disrupt the hormonal system as well as neurotransmitters in the brain, which can lead to mood swings or a poor mood in general. What is the best method of detoxification? First, we must remember that the body is well designed for detoxification at a cellular level. If we respect the innate wisdom of the

body, then we should support all the organs of elimination such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, bowels, skin and mucus membranes. Unfortunately, many cleanses and detox programs focus primarily on herbal laxatives and neglects the other organ systems. A good detox should compliment the body's own natural detoxification processes and should identify and remove sources of toxicity. Sources of toxicity differ from individual to individual and so should the detoxification program. A mechanic is exposed to different chemicals than a hair stylist and therefore needs a different program. A good detoxification program should also involve good nutrition. Detoxification done without proper nutrition actually increases the number of free radicals in the body and makes the body more toxic. For best results a good detoxification program should be designed and supervised by a medical Professional. At the Braidwood Naturopathic Clinic in Courtenay, I provide individualized detoxification programs designed to decrease toxin exposure, support the organs of elimination, and promote optimal nutrition I utilize advanced natural therapies like bio-therapeutic drainage, intravenous nutrient infusions, acupuncture, and oral supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and botanical medicines. I have specific tools for tracking the success of my patients in the areas of weight loss, nutritional improvements and detoxification, which my patients find quite empowering!
