EDITOR’S LETTER
Art Is An Adventure
S
ince my first look at a National Geographic magazine as a child I was fascinated with images of unique cultures and the artwork and designs they created. I was hooked on learning about art and people from distant places as well as the magazine as a monthly treat to look forward to. Since 2004 I have travelled several times to Peru to view the range of cultures from the ancient Moche and Incan to the present day Peruvians. I encountered the street art of Peru while visiting Barranco, the bohemian district in southern Lima in 2006. I returned in 2014 to photograph it and was fortunate to locate a few studios and meet some of the local artist. Every artist I encountered took me to another artist’s studio, each one more unique than the other. My adventure led me through the sprawling studios of furniture designers, muralists and street artists. My final days included a tour of the sprawling studio and grounds of painter and sculptor Victor Delfin and the ellegant galleries of photographer Mario Testino. With this first issue of Brady Art Magazine, I am bringing my childhood love of the magazine to life while sharing my latest paintings and publication designs. I truly hope you will enjoy the adventure as much as I have. On to the next...

Layered over the figure, sometimes vanishing into, it might be hair, wood splinters, metal scraps, or a feather. Brady’s desire to capture emotion by using familiar objects and references gives each viewer a personal “map to understanding” the work.

Painting is “a constant process of exploration, research, and education,” Brady says. In service of experimentation, he will “attack each image through… a different method in order to keep the spontaneity.”

The Art of The Book
Taking the photo album up a notch book designs by bavid brady

EINVENT THE PHOTO ALBUM. “It’s something I”ve always wanted to do.” says book designer David Brady. Haven’t we all urged someone to look at our latest photo album only to see them flip through it while barely viewing the contents? From photojournalists and professors to entreprenuers and sports enthusiasts, the Santa Monica based designer has created over 50 unique books for his clients. Brady enjoys the process of taking a folder of images and transforming them into a unque story through design and the careful juxtoposition of those images. “The book Mayan Adventure was a project that involved a subject I love, the Maya. I used a collage technique with the images along with a color pallette derived from the actual ruins. In a way I felt a little like the archaeologists in the book, searching for unique ways to display the images as well as tell the story of the adventure the photographer took to get them.
