CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
ZDRAVILIĹ ÄŒE RADENCI
Cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis-related diseases such as acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and strokes, are the leading causes of death among the adult population of Slovenia. Chest pain and discomfort, also called angina pectoris, involves a narrowing of the blood vessels caused by atherosclerotic plaques which may cause a blood clot or a heart attack. Risk factors for developing cardiovascular diseases Age, gender, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, increased body mass, physical inactivity, stress, smoking and diabetes. We certainly cannot influence our age or gender. What we can do is make sure to undertake enough exercise, maintain a suitable body mass, know how to relax and follow the principles of a healthy lifestyle. High blood pressure is experienced by every third resident of Slovenia. It is a disease and also one of the major risk factors for chronic non-infectious diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases with an incidence of heart attacks, strokes and chronic kidney disease. Hypernutrition and obesity above all lead to a reduced quality of life, increased morbidity from chronic diseases such as diabetes, various types of cancer, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Radenci is the place for people with heart and circulatory problems! Radenci is one of the rare health resorts in Europe with no less than four natural therapeutic factors: mineral and thermal water, therapeutic mud and a therapeutic climate. In terms of carbon dioxide content, the mineral water from Radenci ranks among the richest mineral waters in Europe. Modern health care and prevention programmes are based on more than 130 years of tradition in the effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases. At the Corrium Medico-Wellness Centre, a modern health and relaxation centre and the hub of the spa industry in Radenci which is equipped with state-of-the-art devices for heart and vascular disease diagnostics, the spa guests are taken care of 24 hours a day by a team of doctors of internal medicine, cardiologists, physiotherapists and balneotherapists. Corrium provides rehabilitation for patients: • after a heart attack, • after surgery on the heart or blood vessels, • with peripheral arterial disease affecting the legs, • with angina pectoris, • with high blood pressure, • after a stroke, after injuries and after surgery on the locomotor system, • with kidney and urinary problems, • with metabolic syndrome (diabetes).
ZDRAVILIŠČE RADENCI
The medicinal use of its renowned mineral baths dates back to 1882 ... “Our mineral water, known for its high content of carbon dioxide, penetrates the patient’s skin while bathing and into his body where it works as a direct-acting vasodilator which means it dilates the blood vessels and improves their elasticity. This above all helps to lower blood pressure, to improve its stabilisation and takes the load off the heart muscle. During a mineral bath the skin flushes as the skin capillaries dilate and, reflexively, the vessels deeper inside the body also expand, increasing blood flow. As the peripheral resistance falls, so does the heart’s workload. This way the organs get more oxygen and other necessary substances and at the same time the improved circulation helps the body free itself of waste matter more quickly and completely. Organ function improves, the whole body grows stronger and regenerates faster while resistance increases.” Andrej Vugrinec, MD, GIM internist with a focus on cardiology at the Radenci Health Resort
The therapeutic climate of Radenci The Radenci Health Resort was the first in Slovenia to obtain certification as a bioclimatic health resort. Studies confirmed the beneficial effects of its climate on health, which is put to good use as part of targeted outdoor recreation and in spa therapy. You can learn more about the therapeutic effects of natural factors as you enjoy a hike or guided Nordic walk along an 8-kilometre-long path connecting the Springs of Life. For a nice stroll or morning jog, a more popular choice is the Heart’s Path in the spa park. The benefits of the therapeutic climate multiply if combined with a cycling trip along the Mura river. Electric bicycles are available to the guests.

Did you know: • Women with high blood sugar run an up to 7x higher risk of heart disease. • A heart rate faster than 75/minute increases the risk of a heart attack, especially in women younger than 65 years. • The number of women that die from heart disease is 2x higher than for all cancerous diseases taken together and 8 - 12x higher than for breast cancer. • Every third women dies from a heart attack and every eighth from breast cancer. • Only 13 % of women detect heart disease in time.
An individual approach and course of treatment for cardiovascular diseases at Zdravilišče Radenci: “All newly arrived guests to our spa are examined by a doctor who draws up a personalized programme of rehabilitation for them. Almost all spa guests are prescribed with daily mineral baths and cardiological patients also take adapted gymnastics and graded exercise on the bicycle under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The rest of the programme is built around their associated problems, particularly orthopaedic. It is always emphasized that rehabilitation is a lifelong process. We advise our spa guests that, in the long run, they need to change their lifestyle and that their stay with us is above all a lesson for the future. We tell them about the risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease, show them what a healthy lifestyle is and teach them exercises which they should keep doing at home. Many people come back to have mineral baths and follow-up checks at our cardiology clinic.“ This is how the rehabilitation programme is described by Andrej Vugrinec, MD, GIM specialist with a focus on cardiology.

How to keep a healthy heart at a later stage of life? In line with the well-known principles of a healthy lifestyle, the spa professionals recommend a healthy diet and sufficient physical activity which should be followed by taking enough rest and avoiding bad habits. Physical activity is meant to include in particular aerobic activities, brisk walking or gentle running, cycling and swimming. It is important to exercise at least half an hour a day. Older people should match physical activity (like anybody else) to their abilities and limitations. Most are limited by orthopaedic problems such as pain in the large joints of the lower limbs. It is important that older persons should find pleasure in exercise and experience it as an enjoyable, painless effort. It is doubly important for them to have periodic preventative checks and to keep any chronic diseases well under control. WHAT DO SPA GUESTS SAY ABOUT ZDRAVILIŠČE RADENCI: “My only regret is I didn’t find out about Radenci earlier. Nobody should make the same mistake!” said the writer and intellectual Boris Pahor from Trieste, on his second visit to the Radenci Health Resort. “Bathing in mineral water is wonderful and makes we feel very good. The nurses are extremely kind and helpful.” said Anica. “I‘ve become a new woman at the spa. You took the time for me and gave me your full attention. After therapy, I see life in a new light and feel optimistic.” Marija.

JOINT PAIN
Joint and back pain is by far the most common self-diagnosed health disorder among the Slovenian population. Problems of the musculoskeletal system cause pain and reduced mobility of the body, reduce the ability to handle everyday tasks and impair the quality of life. The most common pain is lower back pain, followed by neck and shoulder pain. source: www.ivz.si
Risk factors for developing joint problems: excessive stress on joints, insufficient exercise, forced posture at work, being overweight. The predominant symptom is joint pain in long-term diseases joined by stiffness and reduced range of motion, weakness of the attached muscular groups, joint instability and possibly joint deformation or limb length discrepancy.
“Joint pain is one of the commonest problems that drive patients to see a doctor and one of the causes for reduced function of the locomotor system. In degenerative rheumatism, as one of the commonest causes of pain, the major issue is deterioration of joint cartilage. The changes mostly affect weight bearing joints such as the hips and knees and joints under excessive stress - the shoulders. The problems start with pain during considerable physical stress and gradually intensify; there may be swelling of the joint, loss of flexibility, hypotrophy of the attached muscular groups and joint deformity. In the late stage of disease, pain is felt during rest and may be somewhat relieved by activity.” Nataša Nikolić, MD, PM&R specialist from Terme 3000 - Moravske Toplice.

Did you know: • Every fourth patient who goes to see a general practitioner complains of pain in the joints - knees, hips, elbow, fingers or toes. Men are more prone to experience pain in the lumbar part of the spine and elbows while women have more problems with the neck, fingers and toes. • Pain and disease progression can be reduced by a suitable range-of-motion exercise of the joints, hydrotherapy (swimming, exercise in warm water), recreational activities, etc. • Due to the ageing locomotive organs, older people are recommended to undertake exercise every day (at least half an hour of walking).
Personal therapy programme Maja Lukovnjak, head of physiotherapy at Terme 3000: • First, an examination by experienced doctors at the Thermalium Therapeutic Centre helps us assess the functional condition of the joints and spine. • Natural therapeutic factors including black thermal-mineral water and therapeutic mud from Lake Negova (Negovsko jezero) are used along with the methods of physical therapy to improve blood circulation in the joint(s), reduce tension in the muscles, reduce pain and improve joint flexibility. • A personal programme of therapeutic exercises is designed for every guest based on their functional state with an aim to improve joint flexibility, increase muscular strength and increase or maintain independence in performing everyday tasks. The exercises are done individually and supervised by a physiotherapist, who teaches the spa guests how to do them properly, because it is vital that they keep doing them at home.
