“Tigers on the Rise” (2024) Streaming this Earth Day, Monday, April 22, Disneynature’s new documentary, “Tigers on the Rise,” celebrates the remarkable comeback of one of the world’s most iconic animals. Narrated by multi-hyphenate talent Blair Underwood (“L.A. Law”), the film looks at the exciting way that tiger populations have rebounded so successfully. However, with their numbers rising and territories at a premium, “many of the big cats are venturing from India’s forest reserves into farms and villages — a monumental challenge for both people and animals” (per Disney+). Working tirelessly to find innovative new solutions to support both the human and animal populations, teams of heroic veterinarians, scientists and community patrols are dedicated to ensuring that tigers and people can coexist peacefully. Directed by Rob Sullivan (“Baby Chimp Rescue”) and co-directed by Alistair Tones (“Eden Shorts: From Lens to Screen”), “Tigers on the Rise” is produced by Sullivan, Vanessa Berlowitz (“Planet Earth”), Mark Linfield (“Earth”) and Roy Conli (“Big Hero 6,” 2014). “Secrets of the Octopus” Continue on with Disney’s Earth Day celebrations when the new National Geographic documentary miniseries, “Secrets of the Octopus,” premieres on Disney+ Monday, April 22. The third installment of the award-winning Secrets Of franchise, which also includes “Secret of the Whales” and “Secret of the Elephants,” this three-part series focuses on one of the ocean’s most fascinating and intelligent creatures.
“Like aliens on Earth” as Disney calls them, with “three hearts, blue blood and the ability to squeeze through a space the size of their eyeballs,” octopuses have much more in common with humans than most realize — including the way they build cities, use tools, collaborate with other species to hunt and exhibit distinct personality traits. As Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man,” 2015) narrates the journey and Dr. Alex Schnell hosts, the series explores all of the extraordinary talents and secrets that octopuses hold. Episode 1, “Shapeshifters,” looks at the miraculous ways octopuses camouflage themselves in order to survive, while Episode 2, “Masterminds,” explores their extraordinary intelligence. The final episode, titled “Social Networkers,” digs deep into the octopuses vibrant and surprising social life.
