SPREAD OUT ACROSS 516 SQUARE MILES, INCLUDING CASS, CROW WING AND MORRISON COUNTIES, BRAINERD PUBLIC SCHOOLS SERVES NEARLY 6,500 STUDENTS PER YEAR.

CCS is authorized by the Audubon Center of the Northwoods and has a strong focus on environmental education. They integrate environmental education into each grade level, building awareness of what students can do in their daily lives to be responsible environmental stewards.

As enrollment at CCS grew, it became clear that a new facility was needed. The community responded with a groundswell of support and CCS students kicked off the 2018/2019 school year in a new facility. The school boasts class sizes that are limited to 19 students, a commercial kitchen, multi-use commons, an active solarium, gymnasium with wood flooring and stage, and administrative offices. The facility brings together students, residents, and businesses—a true hub of community activity.

Pequot Lakes Schools provides over 1,800 students from multiple communities with a rigorous, relevant, and personalized learning experience. The district's innovative approach to education combines modern technology, project-based learning, and flexible instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Pequot Lakes High School stands out with its impressive graduation rates, Advanced Placement (AP) and College in the Schools (CIS) courses, and opportunities for students to earn college credits while still in high school.

The district opened a beautiful new elementary school overlooking Rice Lake in Breezy Point in 2004 and opened an Early Childhood addition in 2012. Pequot Lakes Middle School serves students in grades 5-8 and Pequot Lakes High School serves students in grades 9-12 with a wide array of offerings including the performing arts, athletics, tech ed courses, college in the schools’ courses, business offerings, a culinary arts program, business internships, and strong core academic options.

Patriot students participate in a robust activities program and each student creates and implements a personalized pathway to success. With one-to-one technology, the strong academics, and trophy cases bursting with banners and hardware, every day is a great day to be a Patriot!

St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School: Faith-Based Education

St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School has a long and proud history of serving the Brainerd Lakes Area. The school opened its doors in 1909 as a two-story, eight classroom building. In 1952, a new facility and gymnasium were built, and in 2008 a major renovation and expansion project was completed. This modernized the campus, which enhanced learning spaces and amenities for all students.

The faculty at St. Francis believes in honoring the dignity and respect of each child. This message is woven into instruction, conversation, and interaction— reinforcing that education is not just about attaining knowledge, but nurturing the

heart, mind, and spirit. The faith-based approach instills values of kindness, respect, and integrity, helping students become responsible and thoughtful individuals. A Catholic education at St. Francis teaches students to see the world not as a place to be mastered, but as a reflection of God’s loving hand.

St. Francis is accredited through Minnesota Non-Public School Accreditation Association. Accreditation is a framework for the best possible education program for learners. It delivers recognized credibility of the quality of a school program in the eyes of stakeholders and the public.

The Brainerd Lakes Area is more than just a beautiful place to live; it is a community built on strong foundations of education, opportunity, and connection. With outstanding schools that inspire students to achieve their best and a supportive, engaged community, families here enjoy a vibrant and enriching environment to learn, grow, and thrive.

Lines form early for free beans. Purchase a 2025 Bean Hole Days mug and head to the front of the “Fast Pass for Gas” line for some rootin’ tootin’ good beans!

Trailside Park in the center of town is teaming with people visiting craft vendors, playing games, and enjoying free beans.

Chasing the Northern Lights A Brainerd Lakes Adventure

HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED TO LOOK AT A SKY FULL OF STARS OR BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO CATCH THE DAZZLING NORTHERN LIGHTS? IT’S THE KIND OF EXPERIENCE THAT STICKS WITH YOU AND IS A TRUE BUCKET LIST MOMENT.

THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO SOAK IN THESE DARK SKIES. FROM THE MILKY WAY STRETCHING ACROSS THE NIGHT SKY TO THE OCCASIONAL DANCE OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, THE VIEW HERE IS TRULY AWE-INSPIRING. WHILE THE DAYS ARE PACKED WITH OUTDOOR FUN, DON’T FORGET TO LOOK UP AT NIGHT.

VISITORS OFTEN SAY, “I’VE NEVER SEEN SO MANY STARS!” OR “I FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!” WHETHER IT’S YOUR FIRST TIME OR YOU’RE A SEASONED STARGAZER, EXPERIENCING THE NIGHT SKIES IN THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA IS SOMETHING YOU’LL NEVER FORGET.

Tips for Your Stargazing Experience

1 USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE

» Download constellation apps like SkyView or Sky Live to easily identify stars, planets, and constellations. These apps are fun for all ages!

» Check out Aurora prediction apps like Aurora Forecast or Aurora Now to improve your chances of catching the Northern Lights.

» A compass app can also be handy for navigating in the dark.

2

BRING BINOCULARS FOR A CLOSER LOOK

» Invest in a good set of binoculars to enhance your stargazing.

» For handheld use, stick to 8x power optics for stability.

» If you have a tripod, upgrade to 10x power binoculars and get a binocular holder and base plate for steady viewing.

»

3

PLAN AHEAD FOR OPTIMAL COMFORT

» Pack essentials like flashlights, headlamps, blankets, folding chairs, and bug spray.

» Late nights can be tiring, so consider taking a nap before or after your adventure.

4

ESCAPE LIGHT POLLUTION

» Light pollution is the biggest obstacle to enjoying dark skies. Drive 15–30 minutes outside city limits to find a darker spot.

» State and county parks or quiet gravel roads are great options for stargazing.

» If staying at a resort, turn off cabin lights or ask the resort to promote a “dark hour” for guests to enjoy the night sky.

MAKE STARGAZING PART OF YOUR VISIT

Whether it’s your first visit to the Brainerd Lakes Area or you’ve been coming for years, the night skies here will take your breath away. Imagine gazing at a blanket of shimmering stars, or, if luck is on your side, catching the vibrant dance of the northern lights. Staying up late for this awe-inspiring experience is a small price to pay for memories that will stay with you forever.

Give Me S’more!

Nothing says summer like gathering around a crackling campfire with family and friends, sharing the gooey, chocolatey goodness of s’mores. This timeless treat has been bringing smiles and sticky fingers to campers for over 90 years!

A SWEET HISTORY

The Girl Scouts published the first s’mores recipe in 1927, calling it “some mores.” Over time, it became the campfire classic we know and love. Did you know Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows each year? Half of those are toasted over summer campfires!

FUN TWISTS TO TRY

» Swap milk chocolate for flavored chocolate squares (caramel, raspberry, or mint).

» Use chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers.

» Add peanut butter or hazelnut spread for an extra layer of yum.

PRO TIPS

» Melt chocolate by placing it on a warm rock or wood block near the fire.

» Roast marshmallows over low flames for a perfect golden toast.

» Stick with milk chocolate. It melts faster than dark!

MINNESOTANS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BEING OUTSIDE WHEN THE WEATHER IS NICE. HAVING A FUNCTIONAL AND RELAXING OUTDOOR SPACE AT YOUR HOME OR CABIN CAN HELP YOU MAXIMIZE QUALITY TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHILE ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS. CREATING YOUR OWN PERSONAL OASIS ALSO ADDS CURB APPEAL AND VALUE TO YOUR HOME.

PLAN YOUR SPACE THOUGHTFULLY

EVALUATE YOUR NEEDS: Determine how you plan to use your backyard. Will you use it for relaxation, entertainment, gardening, or play?

DESIGNATE ZONES: Allocate specific areas for different activities, such as dining, lounging, and planting, to create a smooth transition.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS

FIND NATIVE SPECIES: Select plants that thrive best in the Minnesota climate for easier maintenance and sustainability. The area is home to several talented landscapers and nurseries, including professionals at Wilde North

and Landsburg Landscape Nursery They can help you choose the perfect plants and landscaping solutions tailored to your specific location and needs.

INCORPORATE VARIETY: Mix perennials, shrubs, and ornamental grasses to add depth and year-round interest to your garden.

ADD WATER FEATURES

ENHANCE AMBIANCE: Introducing elements like fountains or small ponds can create a calming atmosphere and attract wildlife.

CREATE COMFORTABLE SEATING AREAS

ILLUMINATE YOUR GARDEN

INSTALL LIGHTING: Use soft, ambient lighting to extend your time spent outside into the evening and to highlight key features of your garden.

PERSONALIZE WITH DECORATIVE ELEMENTS

INCORPORATE ART: Add sculptures, birdhouses, or fairy garden accessories to introduce character and charm into your space.

ENSURE PRIVACY

USE NATURAL SCREENS: Plant hedges or install trellises with climbing plants to create secluded areas within your backyard.

If a sauna is part of your backyard vision, Lonesome Cottage Furniture Co. in Pequot Lakes can help make your dreams come true!

DECORATING

YOUR CABIN IS A CHANCE TO REFLECT THE CHARM AND NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA. A COMBINATION OF RUSTIC ELEMENTS AND LOCAL FLARE CAN TURN ANY CABIN INTO A COZY AND INVITING RETREAT.

NATURAL ACCENTS & DÉCOR

Start with natural materials that echo the surrounding landscape. Wood, stone, and leather are staples of cabin decor and provide a timeless look. Incorporate these materials through furniture, flooring, and accent pieces like a stone fireplace or a reclaimed wood dining table. For high-quality furniture and decor that embody this style, explore the collections at Lonesome Cottage in Pequot Lakes, known for their handcrafted pieces that blend rustic charm with modern comfort. Their locally crafted furnishings, such as custom wood tables and upholstered seating, are perfect for creating an inviting cabin ambiance that reflects the beauty of the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Don’t forget to bring the outdoors in by incorporating natural accents. Pinecones, driftwood, and even birch bark can be used in decorative arrangements. Houseplants or small potted evergreens can also add a fresh touch.

Local artisan shops and galleries, like The Great Furniture Gallery in Crosslake, are excellent places to find unique decor items that add appeal to your cabin. Explore their curated selection of high-quality furniture and decor, alongside handmade pottery, woven rugs, or artwork featuring scenes from local lakes and forests. Featuring these personal touches not only supports the community but also gives your cabin a distinct sense of place, reflecting the natural beauty and charm of the Brainerd Lakes Area.

ADD A POP OF COLOR TO YOUR SPACE WITH A FLORAL ARRANGEMENT!

CREATE WARMTH WITH LIGHTING & TEXTILES

Lighting is another key element in creating a warm atmosphere. Look for fixtures that feature natural finishes or vintage designs, such as lantern-style sconces. Soft, warm-toned lighting enhances the cozy feel of the cabin, especially during evenings by the fire. Textiles like flannel blankets, faux fur throws, and plaid patterns add a layer of comfort and style. These elements can tie together the overall appeal while providing warmth during chilly Minnesota evenings.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

Finally, make sure your cabin reflects your personal style and interests. Whether it is a wall of family photos, a collection of antique fishing gear, or bookshelves filled with your favorites, these details make the space uniquely yours. By blending rustic charm with local treasures, you can create a cabin that feels both welcoming and connected to the lakes area.

Retailers Specialty

You’ll find distinctive shops all around—from Brainerd, Baxter, up to Nisswa, Crosslake, and Pequot Lakes—with one-of-a-kind items you won’t find anywhere else. You can also find items designed or made by local artists.

WITH LOCAL TREASURES, YOU CAN CREATE A CABIN THAT FEELS BOTH WELCOMING AND CONNECTED TO THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA.
