Ah, food! It brings people together like nothing else does. But in Bravo’s latest cooking competition, it also turns people into dirty liars. The show is “Recipe for Deception,” and it’s currently airing Thursday evenings. Hosted by comedian Max Silvestri (“Don’t Walk”), its basic premise sounds pretty familiar: two pairs of chefs square off in a face-to-face cooking battle, each using their own mystery ingredient, with the winner of each duel then battling the other winners for the distinction of being named that episode’s champion — not to mention walking away with a fat $10,000 prize.
Simple, right? Not so fast. “Recipe of Deception” can be deceptive in its familiarity. That mystery ingredient that the chefs have to cook with? Yeah, they don’t even know what it is!
Luckily for the clueless contestants, they’re each told which mystery ingredient their opponent needs to be using, and each round of competition starts off with a classic game of “two truths and a lie.”
Each chef gets a chance to ask his or her opponent three questions about this secretive mystery ingredient, and the opponent must answer two of them truthfully — but only two.
With the judges — chefs Jonathan Waxman (“Top Chef Masters”) and Chris Oh (“The Great Food Truck Race”) — determining not only the entire dish’s quality but also its use of the secret ingredient, figuring out what it could be before the clock runs out is a top priority for the contestants.
There’s even an element of espionage in the mix. If a chef loses his duel, that’s not the end: in the third and final round, as the two previous winners go head to head, the two defeated chefs are given inside knowledge of the secret ingredients — knowledge that they can share for a slice of the $10,000 pie the winner gets.
It’s a classic cooking competition with a unique twist that makes it unlike anything else on television, at least when it comes to cooking shows. “Recipe for Deception,” Bravo’s latest culinary offering, airs Thursday evenings.
