‘Cake Hunters’ challenges bakers to make crowd-pleasing creations
By Andrew Warren TV Media

You know, it occurs to me that there are three different categories of cake.
There’s the sort that’s easy to whip up at home and that doesn’t get too elaborate with the decorations or with teetering tiers: they have just a simple icing, maybe a nice ganache or even some sprinkles. Then there’s the more elaborate creations, the sort usually pulled out of the oven for birthdays, anniversaries or other special events, with colorful themes and well wishes written shows like “Cake Boss” love to show off, and the surge in popularity for these stunning creations has led to a bunch of TV shows being made about them. “Cake Hunters” on Cooking Channel is just one of them, albeit one with its own special style.
The latest season premiered last week and currently airs Friday evenings on the culinary network, and in this week’s Jan. 26 episode, a mother and daughter can’t agree on a cake style for Kendelle’s upcoming Sweet 16 party. She wants a cake that celebrates her maturity, with a theme that embraces her love of music,
Kendelle thinks would be better suited for a toddler.
In each week’s episode, two conflicting cake visions are tackled by three professional bakers. This week they’re challenged to design a cake that will please both mother and daughter, and once the family chooses which design they want to go with, the bakers face their next daunting challenge: baking, build- ing and decorating the edible art creation on a tight schedule, and then getting it delivered to the party venue in one piece.
Combining two conflicting visions into one cake isn’t easy, but it’s the sort of thing that the pros do on the job every day. “Cake Hunters” takes audiences inside that flour-filled world Friday evenings on Cooking Channel.

Jigsaw
The Jigsaw killer returns to his bloody ways in this resurrection of the “Saw” franchise. When detectives Halloran (Rennie) and Hunt (Bennett) begin an investigation into a series of murders, they become suspicious of a former doctor they suspect may be staging copycat killings in the vein of the legendary Jigsaw serial killer. As they get drawn deeper into the killer’s twisted views of right and wrong, their very lives are put at stake as they draw closer to exposing the deadly criminal.
Geostorm
After a series of brutal and deadly natural disasters kill untold numbers of people and wreak horrific devastation around the globe, a number of weather-controlling satellites are built by the world’s major powers. When one of them seems to suffer a glitch and freezes an entire town, the system’s chief architect, Jake (Butler), is sent to the orbiting space station that controls the satellites to figure out the source of the problem and prevent it from happening again. What he finds, though, is a conspiracy to weaponize the satellites to create a massive, global-sized weather event that will kill millions and devastate nations.
