Coastal chow down: America’s seasides sizzle in new Cooking Channel series
By Andrew Warren TV Media
The seaside is beautiful at any time of the year, but to most of us, the salty breezes and sandy shores are at their best right now, in the heat of summer. Not all of us live within easy reach of the seaside, but that just makes every visit all the more special.
Of course, a big part of the ocean’s appeal is the food, and lobster roll king Sabin Lomac is going coast to coast in his new Cooking Channel show to check out some of the best seaside eats he can find.
“Seaside Snacks & Shacks” premieres Thursday, July 19, with Lomac paying a visit to Lulu’s, a classy coastal dive that’s run by none other than musician Jimmy Buffett’s sister, where Lomac chows down on a fried green tomato pimento cheeseburger that’s served up with some classic Southern gumbo. Then, on South Carolina’s Daufuskie Island, he digs into delicious deviled blue crab and some incredible fried chicken.
It isn’t just the East Coast that’s on Lomac’s itenerary in the premiere. Still hungry, he heads west to San Diego’s shore, where a hotdog stand serves up a chili con carne dog that packs in three different meats, and a blazing-hot bombero dog that’s topped with seven super-spicy salsas. For his last stop, he sticks to California and heads to Balboa Island for dessert. While admiring the gorgeous views, he checks out a local favorite: frozen bananas. Not content to enjoy just one, he first tries the original with chocolate and rainbow sprinkles, and follows it up by coming up with his own specialty flavor of the frozen fruit treat.
Through all six episodes, Lomac not only hits coastal destinations in the west and the east, but also the north and south. The shores of Lake Michigan and the Gulf Coast have beaches that are just as spectacular as those in New England or the Carolinas, and the foods served there are just as delightful to boot.
Good food, great views and seaside waves just go together, especially at this time of year.
“Seaside Snacks & Shacks” premieres Thursday, July 19, on Cooking Channel.
