Capturing Wedding Memories
by Rebecca Flansburg
Picture a radiant bride, her wedding gown flowing gently around her as she descends a grand outdoor staircase that is surrounded by sunshine and an abundance of blooming flowers. At the end of the 41 steps her groom awaits, his face filled with love and anticipation as music softly plays in the background.

This wedding scenario may sound like a dream to some, a make-believe retelling of an unattainable fantasy. But the reality is that this spectacular wedding vision is not a dream; it is exactly the type of occurrence that is common at Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake. Nestled in the heart of lake country, the historic Grand View Lodge (GVL) has been providing stellar vacation experiences via exquisite cuisine, breath-taking scenery, seasonal activities and premier lodging options since 1916. Grand View Lodge has also been capturing the hearts of couples as they celebrate their wedding day for more than 80 of those years. “We work closely with each of our wedding couples to offer them a tailored experience for their special day,” shared Becky Bohnenstingl, GVL’s Wedding Sales Manager. “Grand View Lodge has two main ceremony and five reception locations right on
site and each one has a unique atmosphere that can accommodate a different capacity. These multiple venue options also allow us to customize something that fits each individual couple’s needs perfectly. Our event staff works very closely with each client to help them pull together other wedding details and no detail is too small. From a guest list of 20 to 400, we have the venue, dedicated staff and amenities to fit their needs.” The most highly sought-after and elegant outdoor wedding setting is Grand View’s iconic outdoor grand staircase that runs from the historic Main Lodge down to the lakeside. This stately stone staircase is lined with beautiful landscaping, seasonal flowers, lighting and mature pines. Brides descend the staircase for a breathtaking entrance and seating for up to 400 guests is available on the surrounding manicured lawns. Duos looking to take advantage of the fresh Minnesota air in a natural setting
will fall in love with GVL’s The Vineyard outdoor ceremony location. Set amongst mature pines, The Vineyard provides a backdrop of sweet wildflowers and a babbling brook that skirts the border of the manicured lawn. For a more casual outdoor feel, GVL’s Beach Pavilion also provides a small gathering space in a natural setting of beach sand, warm sunshine and the sparkling waters of Gull Lake. If an indoor venue is needed, couples can opt for the Norway Center, a space that can accommodate up to 200 guests, and the Heritage Room, a setting that can accommodate up to 125 guests. For larger gatherings couples can opt for the Gull Lake Center. This spacious location provides 6,400 square feet of upscale elegance that includes French doors that open to a walk-out patio area. Accommodating up to 400 people, the Grand Ballroom inside of the Gull Lake Center is expansive, yet cozy. But not all brides and grooms-to-be desire a large scale gathering. These couples tend to gravitate to the elegant, yet intimate, surroundings of the Headwaters Private Dining Room. Located in the lower level of the main lodge, the Headwaters offers rich décor and a warm atmosphere with a stone fireplace, it is the ideal location for a private group dinner and smaller wedding parties of 50 or less. Since wedding day gatherings often turn into “wedding weekends,” Grand View Lodge also offers a wide variety of activities to help keep the festivities going. “Oftentimes, when these two family groups come together for a wedding, it becomes a family reunion of sorts,” Bohnenstingl shared. “As everyone gets to know each other, they can keep the vacation vibe going with our wide range of activity offerings. From water sports or a round of golf, to a quiet afternoon at the Glacial Waters Spa, we have wonderful activities for guests of all ages.
Our guests also appreciate that everything they need from shopping to dining and recreation is within walking distance. During their stay, guests and wedding couples can enjoy wide variety of catering and culinary options for the weekend, from a casual Friday night BBQ to the Sunday brunch. Our chefs understand the need to integrate different themed events with the same consistent food quality that our weddings expect on their wedding day.”
“It’s our goal to make sure our wedding guests’ event flows smoothly from check-in to check-out.” The resort’s constant focus on providing only the very best guest experience has not gone unnoticed. In 2016, GVL received the coveted Minnesota’s Best Outdoor Reception Venue by Minnesota Bride Magazine
and this exceptional vacation and wedding destination has also been the recipient of the Minnesota’s Best Honeymoon Location from Minnesota Bride Magazine for the last six years. “It’s our goal to make sure our wedding guests’ event flows smoothly from check-in to check-out, linens and exceptional cuisine,” Bohnenstingl confirmed. “Our team is very focused on an outcome that will create spectacular memories on our clients’ wedding day. We believe in helping our couples create an experience that will be one of the most memorable times of their lives. That’s the Grand View Lodge tradition.” fff

As your love for one another is the heart of your relationship, so is the center stone the heart of the engagement ring. Throughout history the diamond has symbolized love and prosperity. No wonder it has been the center stone of choice for ages. At E. L. Menk Jewelers, we recognize and celebrate the diverse origins and source ethically produced diamonds. In the days when the king’s knights actually did wear shining armor, only wealthy landowners and those born into royalty could afford diamonds. Not until the great diamond fields in the area of Kimberly, South Africa, began producing large quantities of suitable diamonds did this precious stone come into prominence as the crown jewel for engagement rings.

Together these two hard-working women offer bridal parties a combined experience of 35 years and a wealth of knowledge and creativity when it comes to making breathtaking wedding baked goods. “Reed’s Bakery can create a memorable wedding cake for virtually any style and budget,” Teresa noted. Having to assign or worry about set-up and take-down tasks can take away from relishing in wedding moment. by Jodie Tweed
Even if you’re planning a small, intimate wedding, there are important tasks that can’t be left to just anyone. Moving tables, arranging chairs and setting tables can take the fun right out of any wedding! Even though couples may not actually be doing this work, assigning these tasks to family members or friends is not pleasant either. Wedding guests come to celebrate -- not manage the setup and takedown of the event. A growing number of wedding couples have come to fully appreciate venues, like Cragun’s Resort and Legacy, which provide all these services for weddings, big or small. The event is less complicated, stays on
schedule and fosters a better atmosphere for guests when this work is accomplished by a dedicated venue staff. “By doing the required set-up and takedown, guests, including parents, can relax, savor the time together and have fun,” said MaryBeth Zea, wedding planner at Cragun’s.
No one on a 95-degree humid afternoon wants to be moving chairs in wedding attire. Sipping cool refreshments, enjoying the spectacular Gull Lake scenery and visiting with friends are what your wedding day should be about. “If couples have special transportation
If champagne flutes are needed for a toast, those glasses will be polished and set in place. needs for elderly or handicapped around the facility, we will accommodate,” explained Zea. “If a microphone is needed on the head table, we will make sure one is in place. If champagne flutes are needed for a toast, those glasses will be polished and set in place. If a podium is requested at the ceremony, one will be there.” Couples can trust that services like this will be done. With this peace of mind couples can relish in the moment. The cutest food trend being seen is miniature foods. For instance, a shot of tomato soup with a mini grilled cheese sandwich or mini shrimp cocktails and feta salad shooters.

BYOB!
In the Middle Ages it was common practice to “BYOB” but it meant something entirely different back then: Bring Your Own Biscuit. You could eat while you enjoyed the ceremony.
Cellphone Ban
A photo trend that has become necessary in 2017 is the cellphone ban (at least in the ceremony). Wedding guests taking amateur shots create a hindrance to the professionals. The flashes from the phones obstruct the light the professional photographer has already set up. Photos may be overexposed and when you are spending money on a photographer, you want them to be the ones taking the best shots.
OFF PLEASE!

Furry Friends
Many pet owners feel their pet is a member of the family and should be included in the photos as well (and sometimes play a part in the ceremony). Couples are having their pets join them in their engagement photos, Save the Dates, invitations and wedding photos. There is, of course, little bow ties and outfits if you want to dress them up a bit, too.

Green floral
Wedding greenery is 2017’s hottest floral trend. The crisp, clean greens are a beautiful backdrop to the bride herself and can be combined with any color scheme. Kerri Martin, co-owner of North Country Floral said, “The seeded eucalyptus, down the length of the tables, is really fun.” Kerri also explained that as far as bridal bouquet trends, “The size of the bouquet isn’t really a changing trend, it is personal preference combined with wedding budget.”
Guest Book
THE NEW “IT” COLOR!
Local photographer Angela Goff, Ever After Photography said a new guest book trend is mini Polaroids. Atendees can take photos of themselves, sign the bottom and place the photo in the guest book. Signing maps, puzzle pieces and even quilt squares are also trending.
A look back The bridal bouquet was originally made with pungent herbs and spices, such as dill and garlic. It was believed the bouquet would ward off evil spirits. It wasn’t until the 17th century bouquets were used for simply being pretty.

DILL AND GARLIC BOUQUETS
During the Depression-era most brides could not afford a new dress for their wedding. Instead they used the best dress they had in their closet or purchased a style that could be dyed afterwards and worn again. During wartime in the 1940s there was also limited funds available and some brides would opt to make their own dresses using fabric from their home furnishings, such as curtains.

Lakeside Paradise
“Get your guests out on the lake.” - Bonnie Stroinski
Breezy Point Resort offers great options for a memorable groom’s dinner by Sarah Nelson Katzenberger Breezy Point Resort on Pelican Lake offers everything a couple could ever want for their wedding day in the North Country. But wedding parties don’t have to wait until after the “I Dos” to start the celebration. With everyone you love in the same place at the same time, it’s the perfect time to make it a full weekend affair. For nearly a century, Breezy Point Resort has provide a 3,000 acre lakeside paradise perfect for lovebirds and a couple hundred of their closest friends and family to celebrate the start of the rest of their lives together. With lodging, dining, entertainment and recreation all in one location, the possibilities are endless. Couples may block off rooms or cabins so guests can make a weekend of the celebration. Summer bookings require a two-night minimum, but off-season reservations can be made for a single night stay. Bonnie Stroinski, Director of Marketing and group services for Breezy Point Resort, said the Groom’s Dinner is a perfect way to kick-off the biggest celebration of any couple’s matrimony. “Invite all the guests who have checked in for the weekend, not just the wedding party,” suggested Stroinski. “Make the most of it.” Breezy Point offers several options for a groom’s dinner location including Antler’s and Palmer’s Grill; which both offer scenic views of the resort’s magnificent golf courses. locations boast large outdoor patios, perfect for a pre-dinner cocktail reception. “It really is the perfect location,” Stroinski exclaimed. For an indoor groom’s dinner, the resort’s Water’s Edge Room overlooks the pristine waters of Pelican Lake and adjoins the Marina
Restaurant. The Water’s Edge room comfortably accommodates up to 50 guests. Stroinski said her personal favorite groom’s dinner locale is the jewel of the resort’s dining and entertainment options — The Breezy Belle. The paddleboat accommodates up to 100 guests and with it’s enclosed space, operates rain or shine. “If you’re having your wedding at the lake, you might as well get your guests out on the lake,” Stroinski pointed out.
“Pelican is a beautiful, clean lake that should be experienced.” The party can stay mobile with meals served on the boat, or the Belle can dock in-front of Dockside Lounge so guests can enjoy the live entertainment and food at the restaurant. The resort books bands from May through September providing added entertainment at no additional charge. If you time it right, you may even find Elvis crooning away by the lake. Stroinski said Dockside will even deliver pizzas to the Belle for some casual dining while touring one of Minnesota’s most beautiful lakes. If a more intimate groom’s dinner is the goal, Breezy Point resort also offers the option of a large cabin rental with a grill. for a good ol’ family cookout. “This doesn’t have to be an expensive part of the wedding,” Stroinski noted. “It’s a celebration and an experience guests won’t forget.” As far as destination weddings in the heart of Minnesota’s north country go, Breezy Point offers the best of everything at any budget. “It’s a destination wedding without having to renew your passport,” said Katherine, (Kate), Hebenstreit. She and Husband Daniel of Omaha, Neb. recently hosted their wedding in the Brainerd lakes area. Vacation-style! The Hebenstreits estimated about 30-45 of their 246 guests flew in from various regions to attend their weekend wedding including the groom’s cousin, Miles Schaefer who flew all the way from Afghanistan to officiate. Since 1996 Katherine (Schmelzle) and her family had been making treks “up north” from Eden Prairie to vacation in their cabin on Gull Lake. Shortly after the couple started dating in 2012, Kate invited Dan, originally from Omaha Neb., to the family cabin. “He was in ‘awe’ at the size of the lake,” she recalled.
“Lakes in Nebraska do not even compare to Minnesota,” Kate explained. “Dan became obsessed with our cabin visits quickly,” she joked. When Dan met Kate, he had a 3 year old son, Jack. Soon after Jack’s fourth birthday, Dan and Kate’s relationship became serious and the couple decided to introduce the two. “I fell in love with Jack the minute I met him,” insisted Kate. “Jack thought I was HIS friend for a while and eventually caught on that I was dating his Dad.” When Dan proposed, he stood behind Jack

who opened the ring box, which was upside down recalled Kate with a smile. Jack then proceeded, “‘Do you want to be a part of our family and marry my Dad?’ It was the best proposal I ever could’ve dreamed of because it involved Jack,” she said. Soon Jack was spending weekends at the cabin on Gull Lake too. His first visit was the summer before kindergarten and has been a huge fan ever since! “We love to wakesurf, go tubing and just relax on the boat. We spend our weekends pretty much all on the lake,” Kate noted.
To share the family’s beloved experience of a “cabin getaway” on the lake, the couple planned a vacation-style wedding extending over a long weekend. They booked Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake, opting for a premier resort venue capable of hosting a full wedding program complete with catering services and guest accommodations. It was the perfect opportunity for the couple and their guests to enjoy lake fun activities as well as rest and relaxation before the big day. All the guests arrived one to two days prior
to the wedding. “We had our rehearsal dinner at Ernies on Thursday. They did a fantastic job accommodating all 50 of us!” Kate exclaimed. After dinner, they hired a shuttle service and finished the night at Zorbaz for drinks and dancing. “We are huge Zorbaz fans! We go there every time we visit!” Kate declared. “It was a lot of fun to show our friends what we typically do up at the cabin,” said Kate. The following day gave the bride and groom time to leisurely visit with almost all

of their guests. Friends and family enjoyed hours on the beach and relaxed in the bar. Many rented boats and booked tee times for golf. “This made for a much more relaxing and enjoyable wedding day,” said Kate. For the ceremony and reception, the couple wanted to create a tone of casual elegance. Kate says it was owner of Bloom Designs, Kate Kuepers who took the couple’s vision and made it a reality. “She completely blew me away. Every detail at our wedding was accounted for,”
“It was a lot of fun to show our friends what we typically do up at the cabin.” Kate Hebenstreit said Kate. Planning an extravagant wedding such as the Hebenstreit’s from out-of-state you would expect a fair amount of difficulty, however Kate said she “surprisingly had no bridezilla moments.” Kate attributes a lot of that to Becky Bohnensting, the wedding coordinator for GVL. “She was fantastic and made the entire process so easy and stress free,” said Kate. She also credited her parents. “My parents are amazing! We couldn’t make one of the food tastings, so I sent my parents and my siblings! We made a lot of trips back but my parents were there when we couldn’t be,” Kate explained. Kate’s ultimate wedding dream came

Maybe the up-north relaxation factor played a role in that. “I just let it go,” she said and added, “you want to be able to enjoy this day and look back on it with a smile on your face.” At one point the couple snuck away from the reception and peeked into the window of the Grand Ballroom to really take in the moment of friends and family all enjoying themselves. Because the wedding was a destination, Kate said the couple waited until October to take their week long honeymoon in Aruba. PICTURE-PERFECT WEDDING by Jodie Tweed
It’s your wedding day. You’ve pictured it over and over in your mind. You’ll want to capture these special moments and keep them forever. That’s why it’s important to hire wedding professionals you feel comfortable with, people you feel you can trust. You’ll spend much of your big day with them. Kelli Engstrom, owner of Kelli Engstrom Photography in Crosslake, understands what couples want — and need. Her wedding images not only tell a story, but
capture authentic, real moments and the honest raw emotions that unfold leading up to, during and after your wedding. “I love to be part of the wedding, part of the moment, the event,” Engstom explains. “I always feel that I’m not just the photographer; I’m part of their day.” Engstrom understands how important it is to have an experienced team by your side. She and Amber Peterson, owner of Studio Posh Salon and Spa in Crosslake, work well together and often do, especially for couples who choose beautiful Crosslake for their destination weddings. Engstrom often likes to find out in advance how the bride will be wearing her hair. This is easy to do since her studio is located close to Studio Posh in Crosslake Town Square.
Peterson says bridal hairstyles are such a personal preference. Up or down, that’s the big question. Luckily there are so many creative ways to wear bridal hair. Peterson styles a lot of soft, loose, romantic texture. Incorporating braids and a chignon is very trendy. While wearing it pulled up is popular with brides, wearing it down can also make a beautiful statement. Studio Posh also specializes in bridal makeup using the award-winning Glo Minerals, skin nourishing makeup that covers, corrects and protects. It’s highly recommended for the bride seeking a natural, beautiful look. You should be the best, true version of you on the big day, Peterson says. fff

Capture a dreamy romantic fairytale look with flowing gowns and cascading layers of princess-like tulle, delicate accents and fitted bodices. For a more sensual look, go for curve-hugging silhouettes, sheer silks and intricate lace. For Prince Charming it depends on how formal (think white tux with tails) or casual the

overall wedding will be. Semi-formal suits make a great middle ground.
Set the Tone
Whites, soft blushes and silver hues work best for a whimsical romantic affair. Consider a rich palette of luscious reds or deep lavenders for a more sensual tone. Create romantic ambiance with grand crystal chandeliers draped in tulle and shimmering
accents like tall glass candelabras, mirror plates and tea light candles.
Petals Galore
Incorporate big dreamy bouquets using a range of similar soft shades. Wow guests with edible flower garnishes atop a signature drink or make a grand statement by including edible petals on the cake. Petals are also becoming the replace-
ment for bottles of bubbles used for showering the couple in.
Dining Options
Sit-down style dinners with a sophisticated menu cater to a romantic evening wedding while lighter fare like tiers of mini sandwiches and fresh salads fit more of an afternoon occasion. Classic chocolate covered strawberries are always a big hit.

A visit to Brainerd’s Northland Arboretum is a must by Sue Smith-Grier A visit is a must Are you interested in an elegant outdoor setting with a romantic garden gazebo scented with gorgeous flowers? Perhaps a cozy, indoor gathering beside the fireplace is more your style. A visit to Northland Arboretum is a must on your requisite list of venue options. The short but charming drive into the arboretum leads to one of the Brainerd lakes area’s valued treasures. Oh, the possibilities Only your imagination limits the possibilities as you plan wedding festivities at the Arb. Enjoy its beauty for the rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception. With indoor and outdoor options available, you can make your wedding as grand or as intimate, as formal or relaxed as you wish. Request a list of resources to help make this day ideal.
Outdoor or Indoor Events Say your vows with the fragrance of roses in the air as nuptials are performed in the Garden Gazebo. Splashes of color provided by nature make delightful decorations for an outdoor wedding. Share your first kiss as Mr. and Mrs. by the fireplace in a small intimate wedding in the upstairs event room. Spacious enough to accommodate up to 120 people, it’s perfect for small, intimate gatherings. It also has a deck so guests can enjoy outdoor or indoor visiting. Expecting more guests? With a capacity of up to 275 guests, the lower level offers another great indoor option. Carry the celebration outdoors on the patio. Picture the picnic tables laced with tulle, flower petals and romantic lights. Share your
first dance as newlyweds on the spacious dance floor, but dancing is not limited to the indoors. Imagine your special song echoing off the walls of the Arb’s band shell. Is there anything more romantic than dancing under the stars? Northland Arboretum will work with you to accommodate your choice of caterers, decorators and everything else required to make this day memorable. At your request they’ll provide a list of equestrian options for romantic buggy rides or sleigh rides for a winter wedding. Be an extravagant princess bride or cherish the quiet moments of a simple wedding. Northland Arboretum provides the environment to make yours a singularly exceptional event. fff

Set the Tone
Natural, organic-inspired weddings have been growing in popularity. To achieve this look, opt for a beautiful forest hideaway. Go for beige and taupe colored, light-weight dresses. Create a headpiece with vines or leather and incorporate your favorite flowers into it.
26 Weddings North | 2017
Clockwise: Maura and Diego, Fifty Lakes; lavender sprigs wrapped around apricot napkins and glass plates. Inset: wild flower bouquet.
Natural Elements
Use wild flowers and woodsy accents like pine sprigs, berries, Balsam and birch woods throughout your bouquets and decor. Succulents like aloe or assorted rosette succulents in small terracotta vases or glass votives make beautiful accents. You can work in just about any color combo,
but matching the hues of the season seem to look best.
Forest Feast
Serve a feast with organic ingredients with each table having large dishes for guests to pass and share —like you would at home. Think large bowls of seasoned potatoes, platters of roast beef or chicken, fresh fruit trays
and large wine goblets all atop long, beautiful, dark wood tables. Run rich colored linens down the centers and for an element of edible delight, use herb bouquets on tables or tie them in delicate ribbon or twine and place them on each plate setting. Top off the look by adding papyrus table numbers.

THE NORTHWOODS A beautiful Northwoods wedding for budget-savvy couples by Jodie Tweed When it comes to planning a wedding, the owners of The Woods Restaurant and Bar in Merrifield have thought of everything. Even Grandma. That’s because not long ago they were planning a wedding for not one, but two daughters. Couples on a moderate budget want a beautiful setting with amenities, but there are few affordable options. The Woods has become a one-stop wedding shop. It is known statewide for its outdoor wooded weddings. A large rustic gazebo, a 20-by 30-foot structure, features stamped concrete pathways leading guests to the wooded site and can seat 500 guests.
A new expanded outdoor patio seating for about 85 guests at The Woods Bar and Restaurant provides another option for a reception or groom’s dinner. The event center has full kitchen and catering capabilities and seats up to about 300 wedding guests. The Woods Hotel has 12 guest rooms and a two-bedroom kitchenette suite, along with a Private Retreat House, a four-bedroom, four-bath guest home with a gourmet chef’s kitchen. New this year is an A-frame rental that can comfortably sleep six guests. Couples can rent a golf cart during their stay. The golf cart is perfect for bringing the bride to the wooded wedding, or it
may be used to drive elderly guests, like Grandma, around the 12-acre facility. The Woods now offers a shuttle bus, providing transportation for up to 15 passengers to and from the church or wherever you and your guests need to go. It’s an affordable experience with a great value. Nicole Aamodt, event coordinator at The Woods, not only coordinates weddings, but she offers wedding planning services, too. Country Essence
Barns, country orchards and rustic resort venues are the ideal backdrops for a rustic-inspired wedding. You can also capture the essence of the farm and country feel by incorporating some thoughtful details.
Rustic Wear
Use classic country attire like vintage lace, plaid, cowboy boots,

thick leather belts and oversized belt buckles. Alternate colors and textures like burlap and delicate white lace or pastel petals against distressed barn wood. Denim is often used for groomsmen’s attire or even bridesmaids jackets. Add some colorful pizzazz like watermelon greens, barn reds, harvest golds or icy blues.
Country Inspired
Make an impressive focal point using large barrels for tables, flower pillars or stocked with ice cold drinks. Other pieces could include metal buckets and wagons. Top off the look with lanterns, sparklers or string bulb lights.
Farm-to-table Fare
Think pig roasts and hearty, homestyle
entrees using freshly picked garden vegetables. Mason jars filled with fruit-infused spritzers or kraft beers make charming drinks for spring and summer. Spicier blends like Bloody Marys and ciders work well in cooler seasons. Finish off the meal with mini seasonal fruit pies or for a more creative spread try a s’mores or sundae bar.

When people celebrate life’s most joyous moments, the party usually includes lots of food. The wedding spread is the mother of all epic feasts. by Sarah Nelson-Katzenberger Connie’s Kitchen provides a winning meal that won’t blow the entire budget and they don’t have to cut any corners to do it. Whether it’s a crowd of 10 or 1,000, Connie Harms and Kerri Ritter make it their mission to provide affordable down-home cooking that fills bellies and keeps their customers coming back for more. “We have a lot of fun creating great meals,” Ritter said. While quality catering can add up quickly, Connie’s Kitchen takes great pride in providing a meal that doesn’t break the bank. “Our goal isn’t to do a $45 plate,” Ritter said. “We’ve done weddings for $10 a plate.” It can be a challenge to make a large meal feel intimate, but Ritter and Harms say they just treat their customers like they would if they were guests in their
own homes. Creating the perfect meal can result in some sleepless nights and long hours in the kitchen, but the pair wouldn’t have it any other way. “Making things just right is so important to us,” Ritter said. From their commercial kitchen in Brainerd, the pair concoct a feast from scratch. They have no cans, no jars, no mixes — only real ingredients. Connie’s Kitchen’s suggested catering menu includes everything from roast pork or roast beef dinner to tacos and sandwiches. Ritter said the sky’s the limit when it comes to menu options. They are happy to provide for a traditional wedding dinner, but are up for the challenge of a less conventional meal. “Sure we’ll do burgers for a wedding,” Ritter said. “It’s their big day — if our customers want it, we’ll make it happen.” fff

But if you’re planning an outdoor wedding or reception in Minnesota, there’s one detail that can easily be overlooked. “Mosquitoes can certainly spoil a good party,” said Rick Poquette, franchise owner of Mosquito Squad, based in Merrifield. “We’ve done numerous outdoor weddings, both at the lake and in backyards and we’ve protected weddings in fields. We apply a pet friendly/child friendly product that eradicates both mosquitoes and ticks with virtually no odor and dries within 30 minutes. Our product also helps to control deer flies and horse flies. We

Outdoor Party Tips •
Plan ahead for your wedding or event and make sure it is on the schedule with Mosquito Squad. They have weddings and family reunions booked a year in advance.
•
Make sure your wedding site is serviced by a professional licensed pest control company. Mosquito Squad has worked with many area resorts and restaurants that cater to outdoor events.
•
Don’t assume your outdoor wedding venue already sprays for mosquitoes and other pests. Call and find out.
•
Brainerd lakes is a wedding destination with over 500 weddings performed each year. Don’t let your wedding day be cut short due to unwanted pests.
guarantee about an 85 percent reduction in mosquitoes that will last between 1421 days.” In his second year of serving customers in the area, Poquette said weddings and weddingrelated outdoor parties, like groom’s dinners and receptions, are a growing business venue for him. Mosquitoes and ticks aren’t just a nuisance; they can ruin your outdoor celebration and potentially expose you and your
guests to harmful tickborne and disease-carrying mosquito illnesses. If you plan to rent a tent for the wedding, Poquette said he and his crew will collaborate with the party rental company and spray before or after set up. All Mosquito Squad technicians are licensed through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Depending on the size of the property, they can usually spray in under 45 minutes, he said. Mosquito Squad also sprays for outdoor graduation parties, church picnics and family reunions. “Once you experience our product, it will change your summer,” said Poquette. Mosquito Squad of North Central MN can be contacted to treat the area resort community and spray not only at the wedding site, but around cabins and outside eating areas, making a more enjoyable experience for guests. With most weddings today averaging $10,000 to $50,000, investing $250$350 for pest control is well worth the price. It sure beats passing around the can of bug spray after the sun sets and the band begins to play. FFF

Host a no-hassle, stress-free rehearsal dinner by Jodie Tweed So you’ve picked a wedding venue and now it’s time to work out the details. Where will you have your rehearsal dinner? Many couples are opting for a relaxed setting, rather than a traditional restaurant. When you infuse your own personality and style into the party, it can become as memorable as your wedding itself. SuperValu in Pequot Lakes can help you save money by hosting a DIY dinner at a less traditional venue. SuperValu offers party trays for all types of occasions, prepared by their deli crew. They can create any tray you’d like, including fruit, cheese
and meat trays, for the wedding party to nosh on between photography sessions and the wedding or at the beauty salon. They also offer menu items off their deli brochure for any meal. Imagine hosting an informal beach party at the lake before the big day, complete with SuperValu’s popular broasted chicken. The deli staff can also prepare side dishes, salads, bakery products and other deli items, explains Corky LeDoux, SuperValu store manager. If a weekend wedding means a house full of guests, SuperValu can make food trays to help take the pressure off of feeding everyone before
and after the wedding. They can also special order your favorite beverages, including pop and bottled water, along with ice to fill your coolers. Custom-made wedding cakes may be ordered through SuperValu’s sister stores, Cub Foods in Brainerd and Baxter, along with bridal bouquets and other wedding floral arrangements. Everything can be delivered to SuperValu for you. LeDoux said his SuperValu team works closely with area resorts to fill orders for couples here for destination weddings. SuperValu is here to help make your special day a memorable one. fff

Lacey and Jason: Married!
Lacey and Jason Stawarski tied the knot on a beautiful day in July at Pine Peaks Event Center in Pine River, Minnesota.
Lacey and Jason Say I Do After thirty and thirty-five years was DeVern Schwenn of Milbank, of waiting, three years of dating, South Dakota. When Lacey was in and eight months of planning, college, she attended church with Lacey Running Hawk married her Grandma Blanche Heilman Jason Stawarski today, where he was the pastor. Meet the Bride
Lacey was born in Ortonville, MN, but where she is “from” even she doesn’t know. Her parents are both from small towns in northeast South Dakota, so this is where much of her extended family lives. Her dad was in the Marine Corps while she was in school, so she lived all over the country and went to nine different schools before graduating from high school in Pensacola, Florida. She was active in track, basketball, and soccer in
Meet the Groom
Jason was born in Saint Cloud, MN. When he was in first grade, his family moved to Brainerd, and this is where he attended school. He worked throughout high school and also enjoyed racing snowmobiles. He kept the Brainerd ER in business during his upbringing with six total broken bones to date. After high school, Jason completed

IN LOVING MEMORY One of the most bittersweet moments at any wedding is realizing someone who should be there is not. Honoring a loved one that has passed away can be something couples do publically or symbolically. Guests love to read the names of loved ones who passed before the big day, but are thought of by the couple and their families. A more personal memoriam is to wear something that belonged to a loved one -- Grandpa’s suspenders or Grandma’s necklace -- is a meaningful way to honor someone so loved that could not be present for the wedding.

school. She moved up north for undergrad, and after eleven years of college, medical school, and residency, she is starting to feel like she is “from” Minnesota. Lacey finished her family medicine residency in June and will start her first position as a family physician at the Ne-Ia-Shing Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Clinic this Fall. She enjoys traveling, crafting, snuggling with Doug and Tupac, and cheering for her Minnesota Vikings!
the construction electrician program at Northwest Technical College. He worked for a season in Colorado but then moved home to Brainerd and continued his career as an electrician. He is currently a project manager at Jim’s Electric. Jason enjoys anything outdoors - hunting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking.
Wedding guests love reading material. The program of events for the big day gets a thorough scouring as guests try to figure out which bridesmaid is which and who is walking Grandma down the aisle. Couples can take it a step further and provide guests with a full-length feature wedding newspaper. The details of the day can be expanded into articles about the bride and groom, their wedding party, how they met, the engagement story. It’s a great way to give people all the details they want in a unique format. (Photo) A four-page wedding newspaper printed on genuine newsprint at the Brainerd Dispatch. SYMBOLISM The marriage of families can be a sensitive matter when it comes to including children in on the big day. It’s important to make kids who will be part of a newly blended family feel like they are a big part of the ceremony in a meaningful way. Some parents choose to include the children in on their vows or make them a special part of the unity candle ceremony. One unique idea is to use “unity sand” instead of a candle and give each child a vial of sand to be poured in along with the bride and groom. The sand represents not only the unifying of the two getting married, but also the meshing of two families. Another idea includes padlocks. Each family member has a lock and attaches them to each other in a big web and a ceremonial disposal of all the keys, creating a visual of a family that cannot be broken apart.

#PHOTOS! Wedding photographs are one of the most expensive and most treasured part of any couple’s special day. Investing in a great photographer ensures the kind of picture perfect memories every couple hopes for, but many couples choose not to leave the memory collecting in the hands of just one person. Couples can use the power of social media to get a glimpse of their day from the eyes of their guests. Coming up with a unique hashtag to memorialize the day and sharing it with guests to post with photos on platforms like Facebook and Instagram will multiply the photo memories.

Gone are the days of the standard stark white wedding dress. Bridal gowns now come in Technicolor. Brides can stray from the standard and venture into something black or red or pink or purple. Many brides chose to flip the pallet and wear the pigment while their bridal party dawns the white. For brides who want a pop of color without the shock of a bright dress, the option of a brightly colored waistband or headband brings unique details. And for the bride with the Northwoods groom, there’s always camouflage.

Frugal bride’s guide to a beautiful wedding by Jodie Tweed
You shouldn’t have to go broke planning your dream wedding. Budget-savvy brides are finding the key to a trendy and affordable wedding in their hometown grocery store. Cub Foods in Brainerd and Baxter both offer a variety of food, desserts and floral arrangements for weddings of all sizes and budgets. Fay Niles, Brainerd Cub deli manager, says her staff has prepared meals for all types of special occasions, from backyard weddings to anniversary celebrations. Popular selections include fried or grilled chicken, pulled pork and party trays. They’ve also provided taco bars for groom’s dinners and ham and turkey
roll-ups for bachelorette parties. Food may be picked up hot and ready to serve at either store and the staff will help you bring the food right to your vehicle if needed. Pam Bement, Brainerd Cub bakery manager, says her staff can prepare two-tiered personalized wedding cakes or cupcakes, made with various frostings and whipped toppings and/or edible images on top. Many brides are choosing to have a smaller cake for the wedding party and cupcakes for guests, she says. Cub Foods can also provide beverages for your wedding celebration. They will chill your canned beverages in the store cooler hours before you pick them up so they’re cold and
ready to drink. Cub Foods also can design floral bouquets and other floral arrangements for your wedding. Gabrielle Potvin, Brainerd Cub floral manager, says she can order flowers from around the world for local brides. She often meets with brides at least three months before their wedding to start the planning process. “There are no two weddings that are the same,” says Bryan Jelinski, Brainerd Cub store director. “We can offer whatever they are looking for.” fff
