These area splendors range in size from the state’s second-largest, Mille Lacs Lake, to some of the state’s most interconnected lakes including the Gull Lake Chain of Lakes and Crosslake’s Whitefish Chain of Lakes. And then there’s the mighty Mississippi and Crow Wing Rivers that make their way through the region. So it’s no surprise that watery recreational opportunities abound. Here are just a few options . . .

SUMMER BOAT A favorite of visitors and locals alike is cruising the lakes on board a boat. Whatever your speed, getting to and from in the Lakes region is more fun on the water. Bring your own speedboat, rent a pontoon, or take a cruise on one of our big lakes. Pack a snack or dock at a resort or restaurant to grab a bite. Many of our lakes allow you to beach

your boat along the shoreline for a quick game of frisbee in the water, or to anchor and chat with adjacent boaters. It’s a community on the water! Pelican Lake, Gull Lake, and the Whitefish Chain have great opportunities for shallow water fun. This is lake life at its best!

FISH! With so many options for waters to fish from and species to catch, you could be angling in the Lakes Country every single day of the year. Seriously! Popular species include Bass, Sunfish, Muskellunge, Crappies, Northern Pike, and Walleye. With so many variables including time of year, bait preferences, weather fluctuations, water condition, and state and local regulations, we recommend that you consult the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website or ask a local guide for advice. (See Walleye Dan’s article on page 29 to get a glimpse of the area’s angling talent.)

And whether you’re dangling corn off the dock or casting out a shiny new lure there’s nothing like a late-night fish fry under the stars. Or visit a local restaurant or resort to sample their fish delicacies. What a catch!

SKI, TUBE, BOARD Some activities stand the test of time, and waterskiing is one of them. Here’s a tip: early mornings and evenings tend to have the calmest waters. Find a pristine bay and carve to your heart’s content. Many resorts offer lessons. Tubing is an all-time favorite of kids and adults everywhere. Hop on a giant inflatable and have a speedy thrill ride, or a leisurely float. Either way, there’s no skill needed and you’re still on the water getting some sunny vitamin D. Wakeboarding is a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding, and surfing—all while being towed behind a boat. Going pretty fast. Are you up for it? Rent a board, load up the boat, and crank up the music. Or slow it all down with a SUP—Stand Up Paddleboarding is the new kid on the block of watersports. It gives you a

on the flood lights—it’s the perfect combination for making memories. Cross-country skiing is a lot like snowmobiling in the respect that most people think of it as a land-only sport. Not so! What better way to get a heartpumping cardio workout than blazing across a sheet of pristine white snow, covering a perfectly flat frozen lake. It’s a great way to teach the kids, too. Stop at an area resort along your trek for a hot drink and to warm your toes. Wakeboarding is to summer as kiteboarding is to winter. Pick a snowcovered lake and get some air. Even light winds can give you a fantastic ride, and snowkiting is typically easier

to learn since you’re not fighting waves and water. Mille Lacs Lake is a popular spot for this growing sport.

SNOWMOBILE Cruising along the hundreds of miles of our area’s groomed trails, with evergreens making a living tunnel, is definitely exhilarating. But wait—there’s more! In the Lakes region we have adrenaline pumping racing action. Radar runs—high-speed snowmobile races on the ice-covered lakes—occur throughout the area, including Ice Fest at Breezy Point. Want more fun, less competition, in your radar run? Head to Crosslake for WinterFest, held every year in February.

Summer? Meander through the emerald trees of Pillsbury State Forest near Pillager. In the spring drive along the shores of Mille Lacs Lake and watch the mighty ice pile up. on the popular Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway—a 54-mile driving route with state and national designations and made up entirely of county roads.

BIKING Road cyclists and mountain bikers alike will find the Lakes Country’s hundreds of miles of trails and roads equally challenging and fun. The 120-mile Paul Bunyan State Trail, beginning at Crow Wing State Park and ending in Lake Bemidji State Park, has numerous trailheads with ample parking. With open flats and some inclines, the trail is for made for all ages and abilities. Looking for something more challenging? Try Akerson Road north of Pequot Lakes.

Just because we don’t have any mountains doesn’t mean we aren’t known for some world-class mountain biking. A short 15-minute drive from Brainerd places you in the scenic land of crystal-clear lakes and rough, red soil. Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area offers over 25 miles of riding through 800 acres, with trails ranked from easy to extremely difficult. BY DAN EIGEN (AKA “WALLEYEDAN”) I’m writing to you on this evening in January where the temperature is supposed to drop well below zero. So I think it’s a great time to reflect on the open water season and one of the highlights. I have fished the Camp Confidence Fishing Classic for over 20 consecutive years and each year the walleye is our target. I’ve fished this tournament with my wife, friends, relatives and maybe a random or two over these many years and I would have to say that my dad has been in the boat with me more than any other individual.

This tournament is set up as a bass, walleye, northern (pike) or mixed bag tournament. We were the 10th boat out and found ourselves all alone on a piece of structure in the middle of Gull Lake. How often does that happen when there are many others out looking for the same thing we were? Not too often. We starting catching fish almost immediately, first it was a walleye, then another, and then the bass (big ones).

Another boat showed up about 300 yards away, but they would close the gap within about 20 minutes after watching the net come out…a lot! At one point, we had 3 large bass in the box and 2 nice walleyes. As our neighboring boat got in really tight and started snipping and re tying to match our slip bobber presentation, I decided to move onward. We slid over to another piece of structure and I casted out a Jigging Rapala and immediate caught a 23 inch walleye. Fishing For Tall Tails After running around to a few different spots and coming up with nothing, we decided to release the bass, with the exception of the biggest one (because we could enter that as a trophy for the bass category). So we had our 3 walleye’s in the box and a nice bass. I figured we were in good shape with our nice walleyes, and was thinking what would be the odds of upgrading that 18 incher for a bigger fish? I decided to head back to where I had caught my nice one and give it another shot. I flipped out my dads slip bobber and a leech and within a minute or two he was reeling in a nice fish. And boy was it ever, and it was the right kind too! The celebration was on and we were pretty convinced that nobody was going to beat that 3 pack! My dads fish ended up being the lunker walleye (I think just shy of 7 pounds), our bass was the lunker of the tournament too and our 3 walleyes gave us top honors in the walleye division. That was a tournament trip of a lifetime and we will be hard pressed to turn in that type of bag ever again. Yes, this is a charitable tournament, but it sure feels good to come in with a nice bag! Hopefully the Confidence Learning Center continues to bag some cash for the people with disabilities!
