Veer east along the way, on Highway 11 or 16 and experience everything Crosslake and the Whitefish Chain have to offer. For decades tens of thousands of visitors have flocked to the Brainerd area because it’s close to 450 of Minnesota’s most beautiful lakes and it’s located less than three hours from the Twin Cities. Visitors to this vacation mecca can find indoor water parks, go-carts and mini-golf, trendy restaurants, bike trails, mountain biking, and even a nationally renowned racetrack. But families say they come here mostly for old-fashioned family fun. Some family members may enjoy jumping off floating trampolines. Others want to paddle quietly alongside

loons. Still others like to bike past pines and shimmering lakes or reel in sunfish from the dock or follow a guide and net a prized walleye. No matter what the activity, it’s all about the water during Minnesota’s summer months. There are close to 100 resorts and hotels in the area, mostly clustered around Gull Lake north of Brainerd and along the Whitefish Chain of Lakes near Pequot Lakes and Crosslake. The variety of lodging makes it easy to find the right fit, from cozy classic beachfront cabins to historic lodges, spacious condos, and luxury homes.

Every year kids watch for tall-tale heroes Paul Bunyan and Babe his Big Blue Ox. (Their legend looms large in these pine forests.) They can pose in Paul’s lap and pick up brochures and maps at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center south of Brainerd on Highway 371. An even better surprise: Let a 42-foot tall Paul Bunyan greet kids by name at nostalgic Paul Bunyan Land. Keep your eyes open as you cross the Mississippi River and explore the area’s small towns. You’ll find Paul’s giant bobber in Pequot Lakes and his face on a totem pole in Nisswa. If you’re lucky, you’ll visit during the huge Bean Hole Days Continue on Page 12

Coming this September, the Arboretum will host an outdoor music festival as well as a cooperative Art Walk with the Crossing Arts Alliance and in October, the trails become terrifying for our annual Haunted Trails event. From bees and birds to Nordic skiing and hiking, there is always something to do at the Northland Arboretum! POINTS OF Interest While visiting Pequot Lakes, be sure to take a walk or bike ride on the Paul Bunyan Trail. This 123-mile, paved trail runs right through Trailside Park in the heart of the community. And be sure to jump off the trail and enjoy all that Trailside Park has to offer, including a Veteran’s Memorial, picnic shelter and the beautiful Dru’s Garden. Just a short walk to the west and you’ll find yourself in Bobber Park, located under the city’s historic Bobber water tower. Take a picture with Babe, Paul Bunyan’s Blue Ox and crawl up into Paul’s lumberjack chair. Right next to Bobber Park is the Cole Memorial Building, a historic municipal event hall built in 1937 as part of the New Deal. POINTS OF Interest Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is part of the Minnesota State Park and Recreation Area system and is located east of Brainerd, near the towns of Crosby and Ironton. As one of Minnesota’s newest State Recreation Areas, Cuyuna’s 5,000 acres are mostly undeveloped. With over 25 miles of singletrack trail riding spread across 800 acres and skills challenge areas, Cuyuna is truly worldclass mountain biking. 36 Hrs exploring Cuyuna Country BY G R ETA A L MS

There are so many things to do that you could spend weeks exploring Cuyuna Country so by no means do you need to only stay 36 hours. This is meant as a reference point for building your own adventure! DAY ONE Cuyuna Cycle Path and Paddle Upon arriving in Crosby and Ironton go directly to Cycle Path and Paddle to pick up your SUP (Stand Up Paddle) board or

True North Basecamp has six camper cabins with heat, air conditioning, electricity, a table and beds. Showers and bathrooms are just a quick 20 to 30 steps from the camper cabins. They sit on the edge of Armour Mine #2 Lake, an otherwise completely forgotten Cuyuna lake that is just begging for someone to enjoy her crystal clear waters. Since it is more of a rustic stay it will probably take you some time to get situated- putting sheets on mattresses, unpacking the car, etc- but once that’s complete give yourself at least 30 minutes to just explore the area at True North Basecamp. Walk down to the water and watch the sunlight sparkle on the gently lapping waves, or cross four-panel bike bridge over the small, but wildly running stream to explore the inlet to the mountain biking world of Cuyuna before making your way back to the water. Dinner Time Plan to enjoy your supper at the new and much anticipated Iron Range Eatery. I had the luck of eating there on their second night open and it was so incredibly busy that I chose to sit at the bar rather than take up a whole table. It’s so wonderful to see a community rise to support a new business!

Evening Return to camp and build a fire in your fire ring in front of the cabin and watch the sun set over the lake. Roast a marshmallow (or five) because no camping adventure is complete without s’mores! If you are adventuring with young kids the setting sun makes a slow, golden trail across the walls and beds in the cabin, which makes for some fun shadows to play with. Make sure to put the fire out before you head off to bed! DAY TWO: Early Morning: Sunrise Paddling on the SUP Board Wake up bright and early to take advantage of a flat lake as the sun rises. Take the paddle board out to the middle of the lake and do sun salutations, or meditate while enjoying the beauty of the location as you watch the sun rise over the camper cabins of True North Basecamp. They literally do wonders in adding flavor to anything you’re cooking. Anyways, when I saw this place I had to stop. Dedi took me around the store as I sampled everything from rosemary olive oil to blueberry balsamic vinegar. I walked out with some toasted sesame oil to use for stir-fry, but the options here were endless. Even if you don’t buy anything, just go for the experience (although I’m sure you won’t walk out empty handed!)

Classical music might be something many only see on a television screen. Beautiful but distant. Interesting but unaffordable. Culture at a cost. But each summer for the last nine seasons, witnessing the gifted performances of musicians has simply meant a trip to Tornstrom Auditorium on Oak Street in Brainerd for the Lakes Area Music Festival. Grown from the vision of a group of young musicians, the music festival attracts top talent in the nation and the world and entices them to spend part of their summer in the lakes area to share their abilities and passion for music. The Lakes Area Music Festival (LAMF) was established during the summer of 2009 when co-founding Artistic & Executive Director Scott Lykins returned to his hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota with four colleagues from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, New York). In an effort to create an outlet for their musical gifts, these musicians put on six free concerts, and enlisted members of the Minnesota and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras to participate. Each concert drew successively larger audiences, which encouraged the series organizers to continue the event annually. Based on the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demonstrated interest in and desire for musical enrichment, the festival programming has expanded year to year offering a packed three week calendar of musical activities for a wide and diversifying audience. Each season performances range from chamber music to symphonic orchestra to opera, performed by a stellar collaborative roster including over 140 musicians from such ensembles and conservatories such as the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, New World Symphony, Metropolitan Opera, Minnesota Opera, Juilliard School, Eastman School

The Brainerd Lakes area is known as a popular vacation and recreational destination with year round activities. The abundance of woods, water and trails in the area also attracts and provides unique wildlife viewing opportunities.

The number of bird species recorded for Crow Wing County currently stands at 298! The Brainerd Lakes Area and all of Crow Wing County is ranked 24th out of 87 counties for the most species recorded in the state. So it's no surprise that in MN as well as the rest of the country, bird watching has become the 2nd largest recreational activity in the United States. Within the area there are over 850 miles of multi-use trails with year round opportunities to view, photograph, and enjoy the sounds and sights of wildlife. Many of the scenic trails will take you through and around the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many forests and lakes providing suitable habitat where many birds and wildlife can be viewed. Some of the best wildlife viewing occurs at our State Parks and State Forests such as Crow Wing

State Park and the Pillsbury State Forest. The Brainerd Lakes Area has one designated Important Bird Area (IBA) the Northland Arboretum. Crow Wing State Park is located less than ten miles south of Brainerd on Highway 371. The park is over 3,000 acres in size and has over 45,000 visitors annually. The state park bird checklist has 230 species with 100 breeding species documented. Several habitats found in the park consist of hardwood forest, pine forest and prairie which create unique and diverse bird populations. A visit to this state park any time of year to hike some or all of the 18 miles of trails can be a very rewarding experience for the outdoor enthusiast or avid bird watcher. A stop at the visitor center to receive a park map and a wildlife checklist is a great way to start your adventure. Also ask about their bird watching kits that can be checked out. Each kit includes a bird book and binoculars with a bird checklist. Pillsbury State Forest is Minnesota's first state forest and was established

The Northland Arboretum, located within the city limits of Brainerd, was designated as an Important Bird Area in 2006. The 500 acre Arboretum was once the landfill for the cities of Brainerd and Baxter, but has now been restored back to a grassland habitat. An Important Bird Area (IBA) is a site that provides essential habitat for one or more breeding, wintering, and/or migrating species of bird. The IBA Program is designed to be voluntary and science-based to identify and conserve bird habitats. The arboretum sees about 20,000 visitors a year. Each year during Motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s day weekend, the Arboretum conducts an annual bird count for the IBA. Members and nonmembers gather to observe and document what they see or hear throughout the many habitats found there. The Arboretum checklist of birds totals 165 species.

Visiting during the spring or fall bird migration will increase your viewing of a wide variety of species. So enjoy and explore what that the Brainerd Lakes area has to offer as well as the hundreds of birds that call this area their home. Happy Birding!

Swimming, water safety for the Lakes WHEN the weather turns warm,

everyone wants to be in or around the water. Hanging out at the lakes on a hot day is a great way to beat the heat. While having fun with friends, drinking and eating, most people don’t think much about water safety - but they should. For people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Most water-related accidents can be avoided by knowing how to stay safe and following a few simple guidelines. Learning how to swim and boating safety are essential if you plan on being on or near water. For more than 65 years, the Whitefish Chain Yacht Club has been dedicated to water and boating safety on the chain. The 220-member club started in 1952 with a couple people who were concerned about a rock pile in a nearby lake. The group first called itself the Whitefish Boat Club and then eventually morphed into the yacht club. One of the group’s main goals is to help provide a safe boating environment for the Whitefish Chain lake residents as well as for visitors to our beautiful chain of lakes. Their principal responsibility is to provide and maintain the navigational buoys under direction of the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Dept. The group also partners with other organizations to offer boating and water safety classes for both kids and adults free of charge. Students are educated about different kinds of lake water, how the weather affects waves on lakes and

how swimming areas are designated. Local businesses proudly support the initiative such as Johnny Wallin, of Bertha Boatworks in Pequot Lakes, who teaches Women at the Helm classes, which the WCYC said have been fairly popular in recent years. All too often the owner and captain of a boat are one and the same (male) boater who monopolizes time at the helm. This leaves too large a percentage of (female) boaters untrained, inexperienced and ill equipped to handle emergencies on the water. WCYC’s class “Women at the Helm” is designed

to provide these boaters with basic instruction in driving and docking a boat to, at a minimum, manage basic emergencies. The Whitefish Chain Yacht Club has also been sponsoring accredited swimming lessons since 1967. Over that time more than 4,000 swimmer sessions have been taught. Lessons are offered each July to children 5 years of age and older and are offered at no charge. When You Travel

When you are traveling, whether visiting friends or going on a family vacation, do you attend church services? If not, you may be missing a unique opportunity to have a different kind of worship experience.

In recent years, my wife and I have made it a priority to attend worship services when we travel. In most churches, we have discovered the congregants to be friendly and welcoming, and the worship service to be positive and inspiring. And our vacations have been enriched because we took the time to attend church. Oftentimes, people don’t think of going to church while traveling. Whether you are on a business trip, a vacation or simply visiting friends or family, going to church can be both educational and inspirational. Travelers have many different options for going to church. Your travel schedule, your destination and your own spiritual interest may determine which option you choose. One option is to attend a church of your own denominational background. Some people just feel more comfortable visiting a sister church of their

own faith tradition. Most churches in resort areas or popular tourist towns invite visitors to “come as you are” so you don’t have to worry about taking along formal clothing. Another option is to attend a church of a different denominational background. This is a good opportunity to learn more about your spiritual relatives who worship a little differently. If you have attended a church of the same denomination for many years, your vacation may present a unique opportunity to become acquainted with a different faith tradition. Visiting an historic church is another good option. The Brainerd Lakes Area has many historic churches dating back to the 1870’s, many Norwegian Lutheran as this area was settled by many Norwegian immigrants. You can find many of these old church buildings on http://crowwinghistory.org. If your vacation involves camping, you may attend a campground service. You will find that many campgrounds and RV parks offer informal worship services at pavilions or outdoor amphitheaters. Try tuning in to a worship service on

the radio if you are traveling on Sunday or listen any day of the week to our local faith based radio stations The Word 102.7 and The Pulse 104.3. Once, when we were traveling in a rented motor home in the heart of Alaska, there were no churches on our route. Although we had to search for a while, we found that a local church broadcast was the “next best thing to being there.” Some families enjoy having their own worship service while on the road. The family may sing songs together and then family members take turns reading scriptures and leading in prayer. A family-led worship service can take place right in your hotel room or at your campsite. Going to church while on the road can enrich both your trip and your personal faith. Just skipping church because you are on vacation or a business trip can rob you of meeting new friends and meeting God in new places.

EVENTS No matter what time of year you plan to visit the Brainerd Lakes Area, festivals, live music, fireworks and more will be on tap somewhere in the lakes region. Horsedrawn sleigh rides through the woods, a sledding hill for kids and soup-tasting across town are just a few of the many activities on tap for the weekend. And don’t stay away too long…Crosslake is also home to Minnesota’s Best St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration just six weeks after Winterfest. Residents and visitors alike don their green and greet Ms. Blarney & Mr. Malarkey, take part in a Pot-OGold treasure hunt and pull their lawn chairs out of storage for a seat along the parade route. In July, head north from Brainerd/Baxter to the community of Pequot Lakes and celebrate America’s independence with live music, games and a craft fair in Trailside Park. Be sure to be on hand for the July 3rd fireworks display. Just one short week later, Pequot Lakes is the site of the legendary Bean Hole Days. The Burying of the Beans Ceremony precedes festival day with live music, games and free beans! Pequot Lakes’ very own coronation of King and Queen Bean is a highlight of this two-day festival. Fall is magnificent in North central Minnesota and Crosslake invites you back in September to enjoy a chili cook-off, craft fair and more at its Crosslake Days in September. With crisp fall air and amazingly beautiful colors, this event offers something for all ages. A Classic and Custom Car, Truck, Motorcycle and Tractor Show brings exhibitors from several states. More than 30 artisans exhibit their hand-crafted wares and within walking distance you’ll find more treasures at the Lutheran Church Jul Kaffe Bazaar and Lions Flea Market. Local businesses vie for the coveted trophies in the Chili Cook-Off as attendees travel to dozens of locations and cast their votes after tasting the free samples. A Missing Chili Pepper Hunt, outdoor movies, kid’s games, disc golf, and terrific deals at local merchants will keep you busy by day, and when the sun goes down you’ll find live entertainment at establishments all over Crosslake! In the land of 10,000 lakes the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza is the largest charitable ice fishing contest on earth! Over 15,000 hearty fishermen and women trek out onto Hole in the Day Bay on Gull Lake in the dead of winter to drop their hooks in the 20,000 holes that have been drilled. This contest isn’t just about catching the largest fish, it’s about catching any fish that makes the minimum requirement and hustling to stand in line for one of the fabulous donated prizes! The event was started in early 1991 to raise money for local charities, but it has far exceeded the original plans by becoming the world’s largest ice fishing contest that has donated more than $2.6 million to area organizations and generates over $1 million in revenue for Brainerd Lakes area businesses! Buy your tickets in advance for the January 26, 2019 Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza!

Thousands of people find the cure for cabin fever is a trip to Crosslake in early February for the annual Winterfest event. This three-day party features a ton of old-fashioned fun for the entire family. Beginning on Thursday, daily clues are released to help people find a Lost Medallion worth over a thousand dollars in donated prizes. On Friday there’s a free kickoff party at the Community Center featuring a sledding hill, skating pond, kids’ games, prizes, horsedrawn sleigh rides, hot chocolate, smores and a huge bonfire. Saturday there’s a full day of activities like helicopter rides, cross country skiing, Italian Olympics, shopping, and, of course, the annual SoupFest where over two dozen businesses compete to offer the best (free) soup to the public and the judges.
