STATE: US Representative District 8 Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Stewart Mills U.S. Representative District 8 Republican 44 Wife-Heather; Son, 9; daughter, 7 Businessman

Three words that define you as a candidate: Hard-working. Compassionate. Driven. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? I have heard too many stories from Minnesotans in our part of the state on how sluggish economic conditions are hurting them. I remain committed to taking every possible step to spur job creation, put hardworking Americans first, and get our economy back on track. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? Constituents are best served by someone who is willing to listen, learn, and lead. Too often in Washington, members of Congress are beholden to a partisan agenda regardless of how that impacts the district they represent. In Washington, I would put folks in our part of the state first. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? America is greatest when the federal government gets out of the way and lets Americans do what they do best: create, innovate, and lead. Washington should help create an environment that helps families and businesses by preserving tax relief and providing economic certainty so private sector employers can create jobs. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? Minnesota families and job creators are suffering because of gridlock and lack of leadership on the hard work needed in Washington to tackle the challenges we face. I will bring Minnesota values to Congress and work with colleagues regardless of party on commonsense solutions that will make America better.

STATE: US Representative District 8 Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Rick Nolan U.S. Representative District 8 (Incumbent) DFL 72 Married to Mary Nolan for 32 years, 4 children, 13 grandchildren Previously, Owner of Emily Forest Products, LLC.

Three words that define you as a candidate: Dedicated. Effective. Tough. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? After spending 32 years in business here in the 8th District, my priorities are focused on providing our local businesses the best possible infrastructure, tax policies, fair trade agreements, workforce training and business development services possible. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? I focus on promoting American-made products that come from 8th District businesses. My staff and I meet with hundreds of local officials, business owners and employees in industry big and small. Learning about their challenges and opportunities, and how we help things improve, drives my decision-making and action on their behalf. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? We’ve seen business growth by coming together to fund projects like quality highways, airports and harbors, as well as our workforce training and business services. These infrastructure projects and services eliminate barriers for expanded business development and job creation, and can be strengthened by the work of the Chamber and the Small Business Development Center at Central Lakes College. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? I’m proud to have been named one of the top ten most effective Members of Congress, an accomplishment earned in part by listening and working together on a non-partisan basis to find common sense solutions to fixing things and getting things done that benefit our communities and business.

Three words that define you as a candidate: Honest. Helpful. Friendly. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? Business property tax relief is my number one business priority. Rural Minnesota ranks as the second highest property tax state in the nation. Curbing bureaucracy is also a priority. My door at the Capitol is always open to advocates from the business community. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? Over the years, Minnesota’s focus on education has helped to produce a high quality workforce for employers. We need significant improvement in the tax and regulatory structure towards businesses. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? I strive to demonstrate this everyday at the Capitol. I have strong working relationships with key Democrats on all the committees I serve on. My door is always open to everyone.

STATE: Senator District 9 Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Jason Weinerman Senator DFL 46 Married State Government Employee (MN-BWSR)

Three words that define you as a candidate: Optimistic. Cooperative. Solutions-driven. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? Reducing duplicative administrative burdens, finding ways to streamline new business start-ups, finding ways to ensure that local and state infrastructure allows local businesses to connect to the wider state, national, and international markets. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? I would seek the input of local business owners and those who are interesting in starting businesses to better understand how current rules and requirements and proposed rules and requirements influence business decisions. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? The greatest success has been the continuing development of a strong, knowledgeable workforce that is adaptable to the needs of a 21st century economy. State and local infrastructure needs that enhance connections with the larger economy need critical improvements. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? I run knowing there will be disagreements at the state capitol. I am willing to listen to other views respectfully and seek to arrive at partial solutions. I will not let the perfect stand in the way of the good when it comes to advancing the needs of the state.

STATE: Senator District 10 Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Carrie Ruud Senator (Incumbent) Republican 64 Married, Children, Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren Broker/Owner Lakes and Leisure Realty, Inc.

Three words that define you as a candidate: Honesty. Integrity. Determination. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? The 2016 State Business Tax Climate Index ranks Minnesota 47th worst in the country. Tax reform is urgent. The statewide business property tax is crippling Greater Minnesota. We also must continue to work with educators and business leaders to ensure we have a world class work force. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? I rely on the strong relationships that I have developed within our community to bring solutions to St. Paul. I frequently call, email and meet with local leaders to ask their advice and opinions on issues facing the district. Many ideas for legislative solutions come directly from our business/community leaders. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? The 2016 Bipartisan Tax Bill was a great success that Governor Dayton shockingly vetoed. It included statewide business property tax relief, farm tax relief, benefits for student loan debt, dependent care expenses, small business, and working families. The first priority in 2017 will be to repass that bill! The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? In November I will be installed as the President of the National Foundation for Women Legislators. This non partisan organization also promotes the spirit of service, civility, and co-operation. I am proud to represent not only District 10 in this fashion but also the State of Minnesota.

STATE: Senator District 10 Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Tiffany Stenglein Senator DFL 32 Martha Stenglein, Patrick Stenglein, Erinn Stenglein Enrolled Agent

Three words that define you as a candidate: Contientious. Honest. Diligent. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? We can’t wait for some large company to come in and save our local economy. We must support our small businesses and help them grow and employ more Minnesotans. To start, reliable internet is critical to our businesses. I will fight to make border-to-border broadband a reality in Minnesota. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? All legislative decisions need to be weighed publicly with input from all interested parties. Minnesotans expect and deserve a government that is responsive and runs efficiently. Last minute negotiations and backroom deals undermine the public’s role in the legislative process. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? Our greatest strength has always been and will continue to be our people. Minnesota has one of the highest levels of educational attainment in the country. We must continue to use our education system to encourage innovation and creativity. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? The first step in the process must be to acknowledge the value of anyone who comes to the table willing to work. The second is to understand that compromise is success, not defeat.

Three words that define you as a candidate: Dedicated. Focused. Hard-working. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? I want to create more opportunities for entrepreneurs within our region to develop and grow their own businesses, whether that be agribusiness, tourism, main street shops and services, or online/virtual marketplace. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? STATE: Representative District 9B Name: Public Office: Political Party: Age: Family: Occupation:

Ron Kresha U.S. Representative District 9B (Incumbent) Republican 46 Married 22 years, 5 kids Economic Development

Three words that define you as a candidate: Persistent. Hard working. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? As a business owner and job creator, I know firsthand the power of employing people and helping them be financially stable. Employers build families and communities—I work to encourage small business development and growth; and I am working hard to provide the education and training for the employees. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? In the last four years, I actively worked with the businesses in our area to weigh their concerns and to push for legislation that built a favorable business climate, not government climate. I will continue to support our employers and their employees. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? This last year the House passed a property tax reduction on the first $100,000 of assessed values. We cannot keep pushing our small retailers out of business with excessive property tax nor can we create barriers for small companies seeking to expand or start up. This was in the tax bill that the Governor has vetoed. That is not smart government policy in my opinion. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? I believe in the power of debate and fully embrace that all ideas should be discussed and vetted. It is our job as representatives to debate ideas and handle disagreements in a civil and constructive way. However, issues have consequences and votes matter. I am not afraid to stand for my area and defend my convictions as a business owner, family man, and community servant. Our community benefits when leaders step up and tackle issues. I am that person and honored to represent our area.

Our communities need fresh ideas and smart planning for the future. We have many challenges but great opportunities. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? Having a relationship with our entreprenurs by shopping locally and visiting our businesses routinely. I will keep an equally open dialogue with our local municipalities and organizations like the Chamber of Commerce. I will keep our community abreast on the issues being discussed in St. Paul. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? Three words that define you as a candidate: Small business owner. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? Our children shouldn’t have to move away to find a good-paying job. The Lakes region needs sustainable job growth in order to thrive long-term. My priority is to limit obstacles for business expansion and reduce taxes that prevent our local business community from reinvestment and hiring. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? Communication is key. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? House Republicans successfully passed reforms to the state’s unemployment insurance trust fund, sending $258 million in premium reductions to employers statewide. Businesses can use those additional funds to expand. We also championed $900 million in tax relief which 89 percent of the legislature supported; unfortunately the governor vetoed the bill. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? In 2014, Minnesotans elected a Democrat governor, a Democrat Senate and Republican House. I’ve made it a priority to reach across the aisle to get things done including balancing the budget. As a Baxter councilman, I have worked with business owners to be successful. My job is to listen first and then discuss challenges and solutions. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? For 20 years I’ve engaged government officials, working across party lines as a diabetes advocate. Tax incentive financing programs have done a lot to improve business access to new markets. However, the most important tool that needs to be used wisely is flexibility and cooperation—through collaboration we can achieve the beneficial outcomes for our community. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? Having been a manager for nearly 17 years, I have had the opportunity to work with all types of people. I’ve found over the years that compromise and continuity in any organization is the only way to get things done. Making sure that the City Council creates the most value for our constituents is my number one goal.

Rock Yliniemi Council Member N/A 51 Husband and Father of Four Plumbing & Heating Tech.

Three words that define you as a candidate: Caring. Business-Minded. Experienced. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? To promote the Baxter Area as a shopping destination with the diverse mix of big box stores and a mix of niche specialty shops and restaurants. People from 60 miles and more come to Baxter to shop for the things that smaller communities just don’t have. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? As a former business owner I know the things that affect business, and every decision I make would be based on how it will impact business owners. I will meet with the Chamber and its members to hear what concerns they may have, to ensure their success in our community. In your opinion, what has been the city’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? I think Baxter has been fortunate to have the 371 corridor going through our city. Without it, a community this size would not have the variety of businesses it has. It’s important to develop and improve curb appeal because that also helps to attract other businesses and badly needed manufacturing jobs. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? As a member of the Crow Wing County Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment, I have a good relationship with our County Commissioner as well as county staff. I feel very strongly that the cities of Baxter and Brainerd and Crow Wing County have to cooperate to keep this area strong and growing.

Brainerd has had a great history of seeking the Chamber’s involvement in decisions in the past. I believe the Mayor of Brainerd can continue to encourage this and even seek to find new ways to seek the help and participation of the business community to help improve Brainerd. The City’s involvement with BLAEDC has been its greatest success, but the City Council needs to step up and work with businesses. If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? My father-in-law, long-time Nisswa businessman, has a relatively simple suggestion; go ask them! As an elected official it is my duty to seek out the council of businesses in my community as well as the opinion of community members. If it’s good for our city, it’s probably good for business. In your opinion, what has been the city’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? The business owners themselves encourage growth and success. We all come together during events and share in the work needed to be done. We each share our thoughts and opinions about topics that will affect us and advocate for their consideration. There could be more support from the city government. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? There are many who want the best for our community and are willing to give of themselves and their talents to improve our town. I will work to encourage collaboration between city council, chamber & area service organizations. Let’s do our very best for our residents, businesses & guests.

Jason Baca Council Member Non-Partisan 35 Single Small Business Owner and Rancher

Three words that define you as a candidate: Responsible. Fiscally Conservative. What are your priorities as they relate to our local business community? I will not vote for any tax increase over 2.5%, I will try and reduce taxes or move out of the city if I can’t. Taxes must be lowered for seasonal business or Pequot will suffer. Pequot will be a good place for business! If elected, how would you engage the business community when weighing your decisions? I will personally contact businesses and seek their input on decisions. I want this place to be a low regulation vibrant business community with a long term strategically sustainable growth plan. In your opinion, what has been the state’s greatest success in encouraging business growth or eliminating barriers? What could be strengthened or improved? I don’t think the city has done a great job the last 4 years, luckily we have a beautiful area where successful people have lake homes and given many of us service related jobs that have been great. I will lower taxes and look to the chamber and the businesses to develop a more diversified long range. Running a business is increasingly burdensome and difficult and I will change that. The Chamber promotes the spirit of service, civility and cooperation among our government leaders. How would you demonstrate these qualities in public office? I will treat everyone with respect, whether or not they agree with me. I will compromise when necessary and willing to work with anyone. I am willing to look at new ideas and am excited to get some diversified input from local businesses.
