BRAMPTON BOARD OF TRADE
LEADERS’ MESSAGE For this year’s leaders’ message we wanted to reflect on the tremendous change the Brampton Board of Trade has undergone in the past five years. The organization now focuses on business success using four relevant operational metrics: sustainability, impact, engagement and growth. As we complete 2019, our organization is performing well. The Board of Trade is a strong, sustainable operation. Now more sustainable than ever, the association continues to invest in its core programs and has reported small surpluses for six consecutive years. The Board of Directors itself is diverse, courageous and representative of its membership. By listening to and anticipating member needs, decisions have been pragmatic, customer-focused and have adhered to strong governance principles. This has meant the Board has also had to devolve itself from certain programs and services that no longer support the sustainability of the organization. New programs such as Top 40 Under 40 continue to reach new heights of success. Business Impact is high. Looking closer at the numbers, membership revenue has been maintained, however, the member profile is very different. Members now represent faster growing and larger employers when compared to five years ago. In 2014, member businesses employed approximately 24,000. In 2019, they employ 45,000. That means Board of Trade members now provide employment for more than a third of all jobs in Brampton. The business and economic development impact of the Board’s services and advocacy on talent, goods movement, transit, investment attraction, de-regulation and taxation is more relevant than ever. Its impact provincially, nationally and internationally is helping local businesses succeed. Member engagement is up. Participation by members at topical events and sponsorship have increased revenue by more than 73%. This includes broader participation by corporate leaders in the C-suite and all employees throughout the member enterprise. Voting members now number over 2300. Growth: Overall the Board of Trade’s revenue has grown by 2% since 2014, in an increasingly competitive market. Together we are stronger. Thank you for another wonderful year and we look forward to a prosperous 2020.
