Tallahassee PRIDEFEST Tallahassee PRIDEFEST is an annual celebration of the rich diversity of the greater Tallahassee area. PRIDEFEST is more than a festival; it provides the LGBT and allied community with a chance to come together, united, to promote peace and understanding, and to educate the rest of the community about the importance of diversity, acceptance, and equality. Pride celebrations largely started as a result of the Stonewall riots of 1969, as annual commemorations, and increased after the assassination of Harvey Milk in 1978. These commemorations came to be known as “Gay Freedom Day” or “Gay Liberation Day” events, started growing and becoming far more than a march or rally. The events gave a face and a voice to LGBT issues and rights. Eventually these celebrations became known as “Gay Pride” or more commonly today, just Pride events. Today’s Pride celebrations combine festive, flamboyant theatrics like floats, dancers, music, drag queens, and drag kings with religious and political elements such as politicians, open and affirming religious groups, LGBT political organizations, and supportive businesses. Since the early-90’s, Tallahassee has had Pride festivals or parties in some form or fashion every year. In 2008, Tallahassee PRIDEFEST changed dramatically, coming “out of the closet,” moving from an afternoon festival in Tom Brown Park, to a week (plus) long celebration with events throughout Tallahassee. Each successive year, PRIDEFEST continues to evolve, bringing ever more creative and impressive events to Tallahassee, providing our community with an outlet where they can be themselves, accepted and loved, without fear of reproach. Tallahassee PRIDEFEST is organized by the Pride Planning Committee of The Family Tree Community Center. The mission of The Family Tree is to provide services which promote the well-being of LGBT individuals, to work to eliminate the conditions in society which allow homophobia to exist and to be a place where everyone is welcome. The Family Tree is a non-profit organization driven by volunteers and a board of directors representing the needs of the local LGBT community.

CELEBRATE PRIDE IN THE ARTS Artist Lineup Authors: George A. Aspros Dawn Betts-Green Originally from Sylacauga, Alabama, Dawn Betts-Green lives in Tallahassee with her partner of 15 years, Anna. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Library Science from FSU. Her essay “Doing Things in Threes” has been accepted for the anthology It’s All in Her Head: Women Making Peace with Troubled Minds edited by Laura Andre, which is currently in search of a publisher. Her writing can also be found at her blog, The Askew Police.

Amber Green Being a bespectacled were-grammarian as well as a professional paper-pusher, Amber Green submerges herself in fiction in an attempt to find high adventure (as opposed to anything involving actual expenditure of sweat), lots of nookie, or sometimes just a reality that makes sense. Her website is www.shapeshiftersinlust.com and she occasionally blogs at http://somewriteithot2.blogspot.com/.

Visual Artists: George A. Aspros Terri Seaton Terri Seaton began her art career with lessons from her beloved teacher Ms. Cammack while growing up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She expanded her talents by studying at the University of Arkansas. Terri has continued to draw her imaginative art after moving to Tallahassee while experimenting drawing different characters from Broadway musicals as her daughter became involved in community theatre. She has experimented with clay sculpture, polymer clay, pen, pastels and acrylics but enjoys the detail ebony pencil provides and the vibrant colors from colored pencils. Terri accepts commission work and has drawn everything from family portraits to armadillos. Contact her at: (850) 345-7141 or whimzii@aol.com.

Matthew Seeger Stephanie Barber Stephanie Barber is a Master of Architecture graduate from Florida A&M University. She is employed as an Office Administrator and Engineering Assistant at a local structural engineering firm. Stephanie is also a small business owner of the Thread Shredder website (etsy.com/shop/ThreadShredder) that specializes in custom clothing and jewelry and also the art company Ancetia Barber Art (etsy.com/shop/AncetiaBarberArt) where she has painted several murals, photographed life events and participates regularly in shows. Stephanie was raised in Tallahassee and has been an avid painter since elementary school.

Greg Mannheimer Lisa Comingore MANDEM MANDEM is the art-name for Maize Arendsee, shared with her life-partner Moco Steinman-Arendsee (and, more recently, with their two-year-old daughter, Kitsuko). Maize Arendsee has an academic background in classical civilizations, gender studies, and critical theory. After completing her Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities, she enrolled in the studio art MFA program at Florida State University. Maize and Moco have a working relationship is highly symbiotic; it might be rather awkwardly described as a “Vulcan Mind Meld.” Together as MANDEM, they have a long art publication history, including book and CD covers, literary/art journals, and dozens of gallery shows. www.MythpunkArt.com
