WELCOME TO BRAND 43 Welcome to our 43rd Annual Works on Paper Exhibition! Last year we celebrated the opening of the rehabilitated Brand Library. This year our focus of appreciation is the Brand Library Art Galleries, one of the region’s most unique and celebrated municipal gallery spaces. The galleries, both Skylight and Atrium, were added to the library by the City of Glendale in 1969. The Brand Associates, the library’s non-profit arm, began mounting annual juried exhibitions in the space in 1971 and the tradition has continued, building in size and scope over the years. It is fitting that we honor our beloved gallery this year by having our exhibition juried by Los Angeles muralist Kent Twitchell, whose large scale public artwork on buildings all over Southern California, is some of the most recognizable in the country. Twitchell had the task of selecting 68 pieces of artwork out of 890 submitted from all over the country and then choosing six works for special recognition. From this group of six, a committee of the Brand Associates has chosen the Jane Friend Purchase Award winner and the Robert Brown Award winner. We hope you enjoy the show and visit “the Brand” often during its run. Arlene Vidor, President Brand Associates

JUROR’S STATEMENT Jurying the 43rd National Works on Paper Exhibition has been a privilege. I first heard of “The Brand”, as we called it in 1966, as a college freshman and art major. I will never forget seeing “Miradero” for the first time with my art student friends. We were overwhelmed by the magnificent white building, its minarets and the glistening entrance gates. We sat under the trees in the park and gazed up at the tall palms, the Verdugo Mountains rising up behind the library, and the acres of rolling green grass around us and found it easy to study or just talk in this environment. We could research everything and anything in the Brand Library and found it almost impossible to leave the place. We talked about it when we weren’t there and went as often as we could. It was a dream.

My own art has been shown in the Brand Gallery three or four times, beginning in the 1980s. Now, taking part in the 43rd Works on Paper Exhibition is like circling back to the beginning and gaining a new appreciation of the place. I did not expect to experience so many excellent works of art and wish I could have selected at least twice as many. I have never enjoyed jurying a show more and look forward to seeing the final selections on the walls of the beautiful Brand gallery.

Sometimes a very wealthy citizen leaves a magnificent personal home to a city and when that happens it often results in the most aesthetic public institutions we have. In this case it was Leslie C. Brand, often known as the father of Glendale. The Brand as a public institution was recently opened when I began my regular visits, 59 years ago.
