It’s summer time and what’s better to do than drink, right?

Flamingo An alternative to rum and Coke, this drink utilizes lighter, brighter grapefruit soda, which lets the bold character of a pot-distilled English-style rum shine through.

2 oz. English-style white rum (such as Banks 5 Island or Mount Gay Special Reserve) 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice 3 oz. pink grapefruit soda (such as Izze) 1 crosswise slice lime Combine rum and juice in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice; shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass and fill with ice; add soda and garnish with lime.

+ Try a few more easy summer cocktails

1 Kalimotxo Some say the secret to mixing cola and red wine together is using the cheapest plonk you can get. We prefer a slightly better, dry, tannic red. This Basque version is a popular refresher on the shores.

6

2 Arak and Grapefruit On the beaches of Tel Aviv, and elsewhere in the Middle East, a bracing blend of arak (a grape-derived, unsweetened, anise-flavored liquor) and fresh grapefruit juice is a popular refresher.

3 Americano Bright red and bittersweet, this Campari-based Italian cocktail eventually became known as the Americano due to its popularity with American expats during prohibition.

4 Berry jazz Sgroppino, a slushy combination of lemon sorbet, vodka, and prosecco, is common in Italy as a palate cleanser, a dessert, or a pre-dinner drink. Ingredients need to be whisked together.

The 2013 Volkwagen CC is in a class of its own. Why else would we have paid all this money for this gorgeous photo. A war is brewing among the German supermarques. Yes, again. The last skirmish between Mercedes, Audi, BMW and Volkswagen - the infamous “Horsepower Wars of 2008 -involved a basic strategy of putting enormous and inappropriately powerful engines in pretty much any car they happened to find on the assembly line. 8

It was fun while it lasted. This time the battle appears set for the opposite end of the motoring spectrum, in the less immediately exciting “compact” market (bear with us), but looks to be just as competitive. “A is for attack,” declared Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Mercedes’s otherwise urbane CEO on the new A-Class, launching this summer, possibly while slamming his fists on a meeting room table. Why is she so fired up? Because until now Mercedes has been lagging in the lucrative hatchback arena. The previous A-Class was more of a mini-MPV, neither big enough or cool enough or sporty enough to rival BMW 1-series or Audi A3, and if there’s one thing car buyers in this segment can’t get enough of it’s sportiness. Even in a car with 97hp. Which is where the new one comes in. “sportiness” has been the mantra throughout its development and they may just be on to something. Going back to the drawing board, this A-class now shares the sculpted lines and on-road presence of some of its bigger brothers. And for the Sport model(pictured), in-house tuning division AMG has been unleashed to give it an extra shove. In comr 18in alloys, a diamond grille and just in case you’re not feeling sporty enough, a host of neat red details throughout.

10

Dual tone custom seats Power locks

HIGHS Still-beautiful four-door styling, willing four- and six-cylinder engines, responsive chassis, great seats, available six-speed manual.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Carry-over engines and familiar chassis tuning mean the CC drives largely the same as before, which is a good thing. Front seats are all-day comfy, and the steering has a light yet direct feel to it. The 200-hp turbo four is more than adequate here and keeps weight off of the nose, but the

optional 3.6-liter V-6 offers 280 hp and a zesty soundtrack model (pictured), in-house tuning division AMG has been unleashed to give it an extra shove. In comr 18in alloys, a diamond grille and just in case you’re not feeling sporty enough, a host of neat red details throughout.

WHAT’S NEW Introduced for 2009; 2013 brings a modest face lift, the addition of a center rear seat, and minor equipment and packaging updates. It is VW’s premium alternative to the Passat sedan and competes against near-luxury cars.

Albanian vocalista Rita Ora dropped the artwork for her debut album “Ora.” Sporting luscious lips and gorgeous peepers, it should come as no surprise that the Roc Nation star has an incomparable aura. ‘Ora’ in store Aug. 27.

Rita

Ora dives on to a sofa, flashing glittery fingernails decorated with £50 notes. On a normal day you’d notice these straight away, or if not you’d definitely notice the hair – a haywire mass of peroxide blonde. But today your attention is diverted by what she describes as her “Technicolored Wotsit-looking jumpsuit”. Some people work hard at being a popstar, but it comes annoyingly naturally to this 21 year old. Were we not banned by the Guardian’s Department of Bad Puns, we’d say she had a real Ora about her. She’s certainly as upbeat as they come, and with good reason. Her guest vocals on DJ Fresh’s Hot Right Now became the first ever drum’n’bass number one back in February and she’s now gearing up to release her debut solo album after signing to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label. Looking at the collaborators she’s worked with already – Drake, Chase and Status, Stargate – you can see why some people have her pegged as The Next Rihanna. “I don’t think there will be a next Rihanna,” she says. “But I think [Jay Z] definitely sees me as someone who could be as big as Rihanna. She’s a superstar now but they first knew her as a small-island girl – and they want to repeat that success.” Ora feels a kinship with Rihanna – both have become pop stars from unlikely places, but instead of

16

Barbados Ora life started in Kosovo, although her family moved to London when she was a baby. Her first musical loves were Spiceworld and Celine Dion – earlier today she bought a vintage T-shirt with Dion’s face on – before she graduated to reggae from her local Notting Hill shop (Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Beanie Man) along with “artists who were not afraid”: Hendrix, Bowie andGaga.

“I don’t think there will be a next Rihanna. But I think [Jay Z] definitely sees me as someone who could be as big as Rihanna.” She has had a few dabbles with pop stardom. These involve guesting on Craig David records and appearing on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Eurovision: Your Country Needs You! in 2009 (she pulled out, realising it wasn’t for her) but she’s not embarrassed by any of this. Instead she seems to absorb everything that comes in her path with a breezy confidence, as if waking up and recording a song written by Drake – which she did for her debut UK single RIP – was as natural as, say, making a cup of tea. She does admit to being starstruck when meeting Jay Z for the first time. She had no prior warning so was unable to prepare to have the heart

attack before I had the heart attack. I shook his hand and my belly felt like it was about to throw up.” Even chilling with Shawn Carter, however, came naturally after a couple of hours: “It was like I knew him for years. He’s so welcoming and humble and genuinely helpful and caring when it comes to music.”Her self-assuredness no doubt comes in part from attending the Sylvia Young theatre school – whose alumni include Amy Winehouse and Dionne Bromfield. “There were so many people in the building that all wanted the same dream,” she says. “It was a building of energy filled with hunger.” This sounds to me like a recipe for everyone hating each other but she shrieks “No!” and says: “There were so many different vocational subjects that everyone could do a different thing. There were people who loved musical theatre, for instance, but I never really had that [adopts stage-y voice]”Laaaaaaaaa!” I wonder what it was like for Ora to work with Drake – in one interview she talks about having had a crush on him. “Oh yeah, used to! Not that I still do!” she blushes, before saying somewhat unconvincingly: “I just was a fan of his music. And he sings songs that make women feel good about themselves.” Feel good about themselves? Aren’t lots of his songs about empty sex, cheating and guilt? “Oh, you don’t understand,” she replies. “Women love an honest man. An honest man that isn’’t afraid to say

men get hurt too”. And a lot of men don’t admit that.” Is that an honesty she’s trying to replicate in her music? She says so, definitely. She describes RIP – a synthy, dubstep-flavoured banger – as “such a woman anthem, it sent out a message to say: ‘You’re hot, tell your man that you’re hot.’” As for How We Do (Party) – a drinking anthem aimed at the US market – she “wake up in the morning and want to take another whisky shot.” “When did I say that?” she says, looking confused. Er, it’s in your official biog! “Oh!” she says, and her big eyes go bigger. “Well, I’m just talking about how to get over a hangover!” She looks worried. “I don’t drink every morning!” I wonder if the reference to Tanqueray gin was a nod to Winehouse, who referenced the brand in You Know I’m No Good. But Ora’s response – “That’s just a specific whisky” – suggests that the honesty in her songs is perhaps more of a musical one. Not that this matters. Grand personal statements are hardly necessary for breaking the pop market at this stage. What matters is big hooks, smart style and an arresting

At the time, I worked in a trainer store so I told them I’d only have enough money to come over for two weeks. They laughed and told me they’d get the ticket. So I went over, met the team and they signed me! And gave me a suitcase full of trainers, ha ha ha…” MOXIE: What’s it like having Jay-Z as a mentor? RITA: “I was a fan before I was signed to Roc Nation, so from that perspective he was a big influence on me first and foremost. Now, the influence is from a different angle. I respect him a lot – who better to take advice from that someone who’s had 11 No.1 albums?”

RITA: “It just makes you move your body with the beat, and hopefully sing when I sing! It’s catchy, sometimes bouncy, sometimes you can jam to it and chill, and sometimes just have a party. It’s fun. We could all do it together – have an alien and human sing-and-dance-off.” MOXIE: Talk us through your three favourite tracks from your new album .. RITA: “Roc The Life is a song I wrote with The Dream, who made Umbrella, Single Ladies and loads more. When we were writing the lyrics they came out like a rap… There is a real flow to the lyrics. It’s about enjoying ourselves

wait there’s more... We know you want to see the whole interview. So here you go! Look no further… MOXIE: What is hot right now in the world of Rita Ora? RITA: “All these fun clothes I get to wear! It’s like dress-up every day! And I’m going to have so much fun on the DJ Fresh and Coldplay tours, playing my music in all these different cities. That’s hot! And we get a tour bus.” MOXIE: What’s your earliest memory of music? RITA: “My dad playing songs by Sade and my mum playing all the hits from her time while we danced along in the living room. The first album I bought was the Spice Girls, ha ha.” MOXIE: You auditioned for the Eurovision Song Contest, but withdrew after a few episodes – do you look back at that period of your career as a blessing in hindsight? RITA: “It was fun at the time. But I knew that it wasn’t right as I got further down the line. It was an experience!” MOXIE: When and how did you get spotted by Roc Nation (Jay-Z’s record label)? RITA: “I was playing gigs when an A&R in London saw me. He called up one of the Roc Nation guys in front of me and told them they had someone perfect for them and put me on the phone! He asked me to send over a demo and come to NYC to meet him and Jay-Z.

MOXIE: You’ve also named Beyoncé as someone you look to – what’s the best piece of advice she’s given you? RITA: “To be yourself and listen to yourself, and coming from Beyoncé, you have to listen to her! Ha ha. She’s amazing – definitely an idol of mine and such an amazing role model. MOXIE: What inspired your new single, RIP? RITA: “I was working with Drake, Stargate and Chase & Status on that record, and had been waiting so long to release a track. With this, I finally I felt like I had evolved into this new woman. It is more like a statement that ‘I’m ready! Let’s go! Let’s do it!’ I think a lot of women can relate to that moment of courage, whether with a man or career or in life.” MOXIE:If you had to describe your trademark sound to an alien who had never heard pop music before, what would you tell them? RITA: “It just makes you move your

and whatever we’re doing – making sure we do it to the fullest. RIP, of course, because it’s about a woman being brave, coming to a new stage in her life and taking control. Party And Bullshit was inspired by Biggie! I love it as, for me, it shows a unity in having a good time, which you know everyone can relate to. It’s all about sharing good times together.” MOXIE: When can we expect to hear it? Details, details! RITA: “End of summer!” MOXIE: We want some awesome new music! Who can you recommend us to check out? RITA: “I love all types of music! Right now I’m listening to SBTRKT and loads of bashment, like Movado and Demarco and people like that. I can’t wait for Plan B’s new album as well. And loads of Drake and Nelly Furtado’s new album. So much exciting stuff everywhere!” I love being a part of the industry right now.

KEMP

By Brandi Preston

We know it’s usually 101 but we figured you already knew a little about baseball. Moxie spent a day with baseball’s bad boy, Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers (boy was he a great sight to see), talked a little crap and learned about his adventures off the field. But first,, let’s brush up our baseball lingo with what we call Kemp lingo. If only Kemp lingo was our national language.
