‘House With No Steps’ Sensory Garden Year: Size:
Alstonville, NSW
2012 0.59 Acres
Alstonville, NSW This garden is designed for the for the House with No Steps, an organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities. Orchards yield ingredients for cooking classes and an array of colors and textures fill the landscape. The diverse needs of Sydney this space are demonstrated in its plaza, where guests interact with a water wall, planting Tasman Sea beds allow for herb gardening, a bamboo garden provides noise stimulation, a stage adds a setting for awarding the students, and more.

‘House With No Steps’ Sensory Garden Site
Elements, such as the Poinciana tree pictured above provide a bold and vibrant experience for users in this sensory garden.
Smell
Smells trigger a range of emotions for visitors. The site hosts cooking classes and makes use of fragrant flowers, such as Mentha piperita to bring out these emotions. 6
Sound
White noise from a water wall helps create a calm environment for the gardens’ users.
Taste
The garden encourages users to try a range of tastes with an orchard of berries and banana trees. Cooking classes hosted on-site help users explore this sense.
Alstonville, NSW
Touch
Touch is crucial for sensory stimulation. The garden uses active elements, such as a water sphere, to engage visitors.
Interactivity
Active > Passive Recreation This dynamic design mixes sensory experiences with a balance of recreational activities for users.

Year: 2019-2020 Size: 0.30-ac Brown-Forman, one of the largest American-owned spirits and wine companies, desired to transform a prominent site in their Dixie Highway campus into a space which could be enjoyed by touring guests, private parties, or by employees on breaks. In it’s pre-developed state, the site was still a courtyard but was not well maintained, had pavement that was falling apart, and did not provide an area for gathering spaces.
The design for the space was largely developed by Shadley Associates, located in Lexington, Massachusetts. They do most of the design work on the Brown-Forman Campus and Land Design & Development is responsible for the civil engineering aspects of these projects, so I was responsible for drainage and some grading in the courtyard. I also worked on civil enginnering and planting work for the site’s gated entrance and nearby redeveloped parking lot.

Desiring to add a diversity of niches within their workplace, this client saw a need to transform an underutilized patio into a multi-functional area. A 7’-6” grade change between building and retention pond presented the biggest obstacle to a successful design. The instillation of retaining walls and railing was necessary for any expansion.
10
Responding to a symmetrical building, the design expands the patio east-west, and incorporates a second ramp for enhanced ADA accessibility.

Sid Lickton Baseball Complex Clearwater, FL Year: 2012 Size: 20.89 Acres Cost: $2,250,000 Gulf of As an intern, I helped develop Mexico landscape plans for Sid Lickton Park, a renovated 7-field baseball complex. To accommodate the number of desired fields, a 5-spoke field layout was decided upon. I assisted in laying Clearwater out the complex, developed the planting schedule, met with architects to layout and develop the centrally located concession stand, and worked Tampa alongside the city engineers for grading the site. As my internship concluded, I helped start final irrigation plans.

Understanding the third dimension of the project was critically important with consideration of the clay cap beneith the designed clubhouse and soccer fields. The cap could not be interfeared with, they had a 5% slope, and the practice fields had to be graded with 0.5% slopes. Raising proposed ground elevations meant potentially pricing the project out of budget so many layouts were evaluated with earthwork studies to ensure we were fiscally responsible with this project

Louisville City FC desired a training complex after building a new stadium near downtown Louisville, KY. The chosen site was adjacent to an existing park system but presented many challenges. Chief among them were designing in the Ohio River floodplain, the training center’s location over a landfill, and erosion control of such a large site. Those obstacles dictated much of the design as building pads and utilities had to be raised above the floodplain elevation and the existing landfill has a clay cap which could not be breached.

Ballard’s alumni association desired an updated entry to their football and baseball stadiums. Their existing delabidated entry lacked material consistency, created several pedestrian pinch points restricting pedestrian flow, and kept visitors from utilizing the entirity of the space.

track
To aleviate these issues, a grand entry was designed flanked by decorative columns which created a safer, more secure entry point for spectators. Upon entering the plaza, a circular donor paver area displays names of those who helped contribute funding. The paths to both the home and visitors stands were widened to alleviate pinch-points and a walk allows visitors the chance to venture close to the track for better viewing opportunities. It is common for kids to find playing spaces during sporting events so mounds were designed into and around the plaza which gives spaces for people to lay or play on as desired.

This project combines ecological & architectural significance. Running through the property is Mill Creek, a tributary to the Des Plains River. The essence of the commission was to redevelop a barn on the property of this historic farm property.
With the footprint and three partial walls being all that remained of the building, the site was designed to take advantage of its context, promoting views of the adjacent creek. The barn was retrofitted with a vineyard, entertaining space, and bocce ball court.

Prominent views from the house are of landscape; not furniture groupings. This formal, balanced design includes a pool deck, adjacent lawn for bocce ball and sunbathing, chaise lounging, pergola, outdoor grilling, dining, seating around a fire place, and a contemplative garden.

Swami Gardens balances the input of the home owner, architect, and site itself to help this residential estate feel like a retreat.
Finding himself bored of what he considered a ‘bland’ Midwestern landscape, the client desired structured gardens with high contrast plantings. The site’s main focus is the kitchen garden, which relates to Indian culture through the use of: High Profile Axes High Contrast Plantings Gurgle Fountains Showcase of Indian Deity The client’s hometown in India produces life-size Dancing Shiva statues (pictured right), one of which was shipped dancing shiva in to be a focal point in the garden itself. Despite being surrounded by pavement, the buffered plantings keep on-lookers nestled in comfortably within the setting.

Indiana enhance building entrances
Year: 2016 - 2017 Size: 0.38 Acres Cost: $460,000 U.I.C. desired a courtyard that protects and enhances the students’ experience with the building. Safety concerns became apparent as delivery trucks would often use the courtyard to access the building entrance, but the new design would need to be open to large pedestrian crowds and cyclists.
Students have common break periods throughout the day with no spaces to congregate outside. The commissioned project was asked to be flexible for future events, provide study niches, and give the college a distinct senseof-place (while adhering to design standards). The design process passed through personnel ranging from snowplowers to donors to building administrators before a final product was reached.

This senior thesis focuses on Roberts Stadium, a closed entertainment center located 3 miles east of Evansville’s central business district. The city itself is sprawling, leading to disconnected neighborhoods and a framework which doesn’t support pedestrians. Coupled with this, Evansville, IN became America’s most obese city in 2010. Across the United States, 30,000 people die each year from obesityrelated diseases (~1/4 of Evansville’s population), which frames the backdrop for this project. 54

Kentucky
The decision was made to create a neighborhood which promotes active lifestyles and expresses connectivity to its past, nature, and its surroundings. The façade of Roberts stadium is preserved, turning the former stadium into a commercial center with an interior courtyard. The adjacent Army Reserve training center is repurposed into a community center for local residents to enjoy. A network of trails also connects residents within the community and to adjacent neighborhoods. Greater density allows for larger open spaces, and an ecological corridor naturally filters storm water runoff.
