Wonders Never Cease any things happened when Governor Scott came to town the last week in February and visited with the veterans at Emory L. Bennett Veterans’ Nursing Home. The visit was well received and covered by the news media. However, there was an unheard story that I learned of the next day when a gentleman, Gregory Jones came to visit his special friend and cousin that he had been looking for the last five years. This is his story in a letter to me (slightly edited): Good morning Kitty. Mr. B's wife was a cousin to me on my mother’s side of the family. We grew up in the same hometown. Mr. B is about 15 years my senior. I always looked up to him as to an uncle! He has ALWAYS been a very kind and understanding man, well respected by everyone that knew him. He is always understanding and always fair in his actions... and thankful for all the blessings he received. In our hometown, he was active with the fire company and other civic committees. After my discharge from the Marine Corps. I purchased property only three doors away from Mr. B., constructed a home and raised my family there. Mrs. B decided she had enough of the winter weather. It took over two years to convince Mr. B to leave his family, friends, and hometown and move to sunny Florida. We visited them in Florida several times while on vacation. They always welcomed us and anyone from our hometown. Well, as time passed we began to lose close contact because of the distance and our families going in different directions. Our children were growing and going their own way. About five years ago my cousin, Mr. B’s wife passed. That is when we lost contact with Mr. B! My mother did not know where Mr. B went—only that he moved! Someone said his son moved to Texas and that is where he went but no address was provided. About two years ago a friend said Mr. B was back in the Daytona Beach area but he did not have his address. Then I was told he was in a nursing facility. When I moved to Palm Coast fourteen months ago I began visiting and calling various nursing homes looking for Mr. B. I must have called and visited over 30 nursing homes before I gave up looking. I have to move back to Pennsylvania for heart bypass surgery in March. I told my spouse I was disappointed that I could not locate Mr. B.

You Name It …by Kitty Maiden
While sitting, watching the morning news on television, the newscaster announced they were at a VA nursing facility in Daytona along with the Governor who was going to present medals to veterans for their service to our country. They mentioned one name as the son of Italian emigrants, a man who was proud to serve his country. Being a veteran of the Viet Nam War myself, having 100 percent disability, I immediately became interested in the story. Well when they said his name I screamed and said “My God, it's Mex!” My spouse asked, “Why are you yelling?” I said, “After all my searching, I found him!” Just before I leave to go back to Pennsylvania—God has given me this gift! I called the news station for the name and location of the VA Facility where Mr. B was residing. I called there and confirmed it, requested they not tell him I was coming. I arrived at the VA at 9 A.M. When I went to his room he was working on a word puzzle. I said, “I hear anyone from Wind Gap, Pennsylvania is a bum.” Mr. B looked up (amazed)! He stood up and we embraced. I could not stop the tears from flowing. I was so happy to see him and that he was in good health. We visited for two hours talking about family and the past several years. It was great. The VA Facility was immaculate. He said he was happy and very content where he was. I departed two hours later feeling wonderful that I was blessed to have seen him after searching for so long! I was able to take him out for dinner one evening before I departed for Pennsylvania. You see God does move among us and in mysterious ways! Gregory Jones there’s very little I can add to such a heart-felt message, but this I know: Mr. B. was so pleased with their reunion that next time he was taken out to dinner, he (and his walker) practically danced all the way to the car! When asked about his nickname, Mex, he also told his real name and how it came to be. His mother was so proud of her chosen country that she gave him a name that appropriately expressed her love and special devotion.

Year 2014 Medicaid Allowances
W
hen a loved one requires full-time nursing care, the spouse or other family members may suffer financial crisis in addition to the emotional distress. If medical and financial eligibility standards are met, as determined by the Department of Children and Family Services, Medicaid assistance may be available. This article deals with the financial requirements. Certain threshold figures are adjusted annually. As of January 1, 2014, a single person applying for assistance must have less than $2,000 in countable assets. If the applicant is married, the spouse who is not in a nursing home (“community spouse”) may also have $117,240 in countable assets. Certain assets are not countable or are exempt from this determination. If nursing home care is possible within five years, and Medicaid might be sought, it is unwise to sell or change title to the home, add names to assets, purchase an annuity, or give anything away without first seeking professional advice. A transfer of assets may cause one to be ineligible for Medicaid for up to five years. Nevertheless, spouses can transfer assets between each other freely.
Elder Law …by Michael A. Pyle
The applicant’s income is limited to 2,163.00 per month. If the income exceeds that amount, an Irrevocable Income Only Trust will alleviate the problem. The community spouse will be able to keep that spouse’s income and may be able to keep a portion of the applicant’s income, depending on the community spouse’s own income and housing expenses. The community spouse’s monthly maintenance needs allowance for this year is a minimum of $1,939.00 and a maximum of $2,931.00. If one’s assets or income exceed the figures, there may be other alternatives. Seek professional advice from an attorney who practices in elder law, particularly in Medicaid planning, to determine whether there are legal alternatives to assist in qualifying. Attorney Michael A. The Power Of Choice
by George Goldtrap he story goes that in the former Soviet Union, Communist leader Gorbachev visited a Russian auto display room in search of transportation. 'Gorbie' was surprised to learn he could choose between a red or black car. I'll take red, he announced delightfully! 'Fine', said the comrade, (they didn't have salesmen in the USSR, 'but it does take a little longer to get red'. 'Oh.' responded Gorbie, 'How long, asked Gorbie? 'I should have it in about 8 months... say November 29th, said the clerk. 'Will that be in the morning or the afternoon' the Premier queried? 'What's the difference, responded the comrade? 'Well', said Gorbie, 'I've got the plumber coming in the morning! Unbelievable? Not if you had seen the USSR. I have, and it was very Red. I also visited Communist Poland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. What should have been a happy people with a rich heritage, was a sad people, a broken land with dilapidated living conditions, desperate for the 21st century's better life. While in Moscow, I became ill with a kidney stone attack. (Those experienced will immediately sympathize.) My hotel assigned a Russian doctor who spoke little English. His nurse spoke none. They had almost no medical equipment with which to work. The doctor gave me a pain reliever and something else and said that if I didn't have relief in a few hours, he'd assign me to a Moscow hospital. (If you like socialized medicine, you'd have loved the USSR's hospitals. Needless to say I didn't want to be in a Moscow Hospital. It occurred to me that dying might have its advantages.) I survived long enough to get back to Vienna and western medicine. What a relief. (No pun intended.) Upon returning to the west through Austria, I was struck by the simple beauty of neon signs... one, red, white, and blue, advertising Pepsi Cola; another, brilliant yellow saying, Hertz Rental Cars; and the magnificence of a bright red Sheraton sign. Moscow, where I had just left, had only two neon signs in the whole city. Neither advertised products, and one of them did not function. What a reveling contrast.

Happy Talk …by George & Peggy Goldtrap Several years ago Communism became ill. It began bleeding through its military veins. Its agriculture convulsed, leaving its people undernourished and starving. Ambitious and greedy, it finally lost its mental capacity. Socially and morally bankrupt, its leaders could not contain the people's desire for freedom... the right to succeed or fail at their own goals rather than be forced to fail at the goals of lofty Lenin. Thanks to the information age and some courageous world leaders who never gave in to the pressures of the menace, communism's influence died. It has ghost in the Orient and in Cuba, but we need fear them no more than we needed to fear the USSR. Communism growls, but it's to weak to bite. Under freedom mankind prospers and the world benefits. My contrasting examples, medicine and neon signs, both represent the magic of free competition... whether curing an illness or selling a cola... the best stands out. The struggle for improvement keeps the candles of learning burning late. People progress ensues. Count the competing varieties of soap, cereal, salad dressing, dog food, or headache remedies. If you want a red car, buy it... today. Consider the phone book's choice of doctors and hospitals offering the latest healing knowledge. Then silently recite... 'give me liberty or give me death'. America, the land of the free, has celebrated 217, mostly prosperous years. After 70 years under communism, the USSR, collapsed. No longer enslaved philosophically, its masses have moved west, where freedom begins. Eventually the world will feel the effect of their presence and competition... and will be the better for it. Never forget... America saved freedom, (choice), for everyone who wants it. The question now is, 'can we hang on to it?' George and Peggy Goldtrap are both actors, speakers, and writers and may be reached at georgegoldtrap@gmail.com

ince the real estate crash, interest rates have plummeted, leaving many retirees scrambling to find safe investments for retirement income. Most pension plans have disappeared and many that are still around are having funding problems. Simply investing in CDs and living off of the interest is an impossibility. For most retirees, social security is still the largest part and most secure income stream they'll have to depend on. But even social security has a projected shortfall. In the year 2033 it's estimated that there will only be 77 cents for every dollar promised in benefits.1 Either way, I'm a believer that social security will continue on, just not exactly in its current state. So yes, social security has its issues too, but still remains to be the most stable and guaranteed income stream for retirees today. That's why it's so important to make sure to optimize your lifetime income from social security and know when the best time would be to elect to start benefits. Interestingly, most retirees simply take it as soon as possible (normally age 62) without ever weighing out the benefits of either simply waiting and allowing an 8 percent delayed retirement credit to accumulate, or even the possibility of starting a spousal benefit now while allowing their own benefits to grow. Timing of social security benefits is critical to optimize the potential lifetime income throughout retirement. I can't begin to elaborate on all of the different strategies, in a single article, so

Q: I have a copy of The Young People's Church Of The Air Hymn Book, compiled and autographed by Percy B. Crawford. It was published in 1932. Could you tell what it is worth and where I might sell it? — Jane, Lititz, PA A: Percy B. Crawford was a Canadian who immigrated to the United States during the early decades of the past century. He was an evangelist and fundamentalist preacher, and was one of the first to discover the power of early radio. In 1931, while a seminarian at Westminster Theological Seminary, he started a youth-oriented radio program at a Philadelphia station. It may hit a sour note with you, but his songbook, even autographed, is worth at best only about $15 or $20. My suggestion is to show it to used book dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. *** Q: I have a Bible that was given to my mother when she and her family immigrated to America from Austria. It is dated 1914 and was from the New
York Bible Society. Does it have any value? If so, how much? —Margaret, Sioux Falls, SD A: Verily I say unto you, not really. Only Bibles crafted before about 1700 are of interest to most collectors. Your Bible has value, but only of the sentimental kind. Cherish it as a family heirloom and not for possible resale. *** Q: I worked as a volunteer in the Jimmy Carter presidential campaign of 1980. Here’s An Idea Technology Tips by JoAnn Derson
Smartphones and computers are notorious for viruses—but I'm thinking of the kind that can make YOU sick. These devices are touched by us constantly. And then we stick them right up to our faces! Take the time daily to clean your device with an alcohol wipe to decontaminate it. Your respiratory and digestive systems will thank you. —JoAnn “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers, and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3 boys R#1.” Just thought I'd share my trick, but not my password!” —R.W. in Iowa “Use secure networks to transfer data. When out and about, if you are using free Wi-Fi hotspots, choose ones that encrypt data. You can check the Web address and look for a padlock icon, or
addresses that begin with https://. The S means secure. Sign out of all accounts when you are using someone else's computer. I can't tell you how often I have used the computers at the library and went to sign into my webmail only to find that the previous user's e-mail comes up. Navigating away from a page usually doesn't work, closing the browser sometimes doesn't work, but logging off ALWAYS works. The same for shopping sites, like Amazon. If you don't log off—because these sites use cookies to remember you—someone could potentially use your account.” —M.L. in Florida Lock your device! Just as you wouldn't leave your door unlocked, so too should you not leave your phone unlocked, particularly if you have applications on your smartphone that can be easily accessed. Lock it up. March 14, 2014—Seniors Today—Page A-13 Beat Stress, Kick Anxiety, Get Skinny Sleep by Mitch Booth
n my last article, I discussed post Super Bowl Waist Management. I addressed the mechanics of boosting metabolism by eating good non-inflammatory organic foods. Love Whole Foods Market and Café is not just about whole unaltered food, its mission statement is whole body wellness: mind, body, and spirit. That precept is not a marketing gimmick or fad. For over twenty-five years, we have brought to our community the understanding that three elements need to work in harmony. These three things: health, wealth, and happiness must manifest in an individual’s life. How do we create happiness when we are bombarded with media coverage of Syria and the Middle East, the endless winter weather stories, and now the Ukraine? Some new catastrophe seems to pop up weekly. I suggest we do what my favorite “foodie,” Martha Stewart would do: make lemonade! In other words, learn the skills needed to help us thrive while remaining focused and grounded. If you can’t control events, then surrender and concentrate on what you can control. If psychic stress isn’t managed, it triggers nutritional stress. Brain chemistry shifts and refined carbohydrate food cravings ensue. Make sure, if you are going to “make lemonade,” that you make it without high fructose corn syrup or worse—aspartame. No lemonade lite. So how dangerous is refined sugar? Dr. Richard Johnson, Nephrologist, University of Colorado, makes it crystal clear in the August 2013 edition of National Geographic: America is addicted to sugar. The entire issue is dedicated to this substance. If your goal is a calm demeanor for yourself and family, then we need to understand how sugar has been carefully crafted and marketed to exploit this addiction. In 1870 the average American consumed 47 pounds of sugar per year. Currently, we are pushing 85 pounds per year. This is 22 to 25 teaspoons for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. every day! What follows is an insulin roller coaster cascade which results in mood swings, irritability, fatigue, and often bouts of anxiety. If maintained over decades, it is not hard to understand why Type II diabetes has exploded in the U.S. My favorite book on this issue: How To Treat And Prevent Diabetes. Written by Natural Factor’s Dr. Michael Murray, N.D., this book presents an easy to follow program centered

on this WellBetX/PGX supplement family. The right food choices combined with these proven nutraceuticals explains why this is one of the most successful product lines in our industry to break sugar addiction and balance blood sugar levels.

Another gift of too much sugar is anxiety, which leads to sleeplessness which then fuels fatigue and more anxiety. Dr. Murray now has a new book called: Stress, Anxiety, And Insomnia/ Natural Solutions. In it, he not only discusses natural remedies for restoring balance, but also how to set personal goals, how to practice love (I liked that especially), how to do positive visual projections, as well as how to laugh. The book is simply an owner’s manual to address the current state of the American psyche without chemicals. He addresses:

1. Improve Sleep Quality/Duration 2. 5HTP and GABA 3. Beat Stress (at work and play) 4. Make Adrenal Sense 5. Control Blood Sugar Levels 6. Utilize WellBetX and PGX Most importantly, this book emphasizes lifestyle choices in stress reduction. Will you lose weight if you use Tranquil Sleep by Natural Factors? Yes, it is well documented in the medical literature. What the book proposes is not just “making lemonade,” but more importantly “how you make the lemonade.” So get off the couch and put on your hiking shoes (it is in the book) and walk down to one of our two stores, Ormond and Port Orange, and take advantage of our line drive promotion on all Natural Factors products. Both stores carry Dr. Murrays books. Mention this article and get 10 percent off on either book title. Gee, this makes me feel like making fresh squeezed organic lemonade from scratch. Workout Still Going Strong by Matilda Charles
'm actually working out on a daily basis this winter. Unlike prior winters, where I could always find an excuse to avoid going to the gym—it's cold, it's snowing, it takes too long to get there and back—I've finally figured out how to get around my own faulty reasoning. A few months ago I wrote about purchasing a small manual treadmill, hoping that this would finally do the trick for me. I've put the treadmill in the living room (it leans up next to the wall when not in use), along with a selection of hand weights on the end table next to the lamp. It works. While it's not a full gym workout, it's still a bit of exercise. I can watch the television while I walk, and have even used the seniors walking workout CD while on the treadmill because the music is good. The small hand weights have been useful, but I'm ready to upgrade to

slightly heavier ones. Hint: Start with light weights, or you might get discouraged and not use them at all. The wrist and ankle weights have been used only a few times, as they can cause joint pain if put on the wrong place. For the wrist weights, it lessens the stress on joints if used farther up the arm, say halfway to the elbow. Ankle weights need a lot of padding underneath, but still won't stay in place if walking. They do work for seated leg raises. So, there's my midwinter workout report. How are you doing with your workout resolutions? They say that if you can keep something going for 21 days, it can become routine. ave Bennett and his incredible swing sextet give a salute to jazz music’s greatest clarinetists on April 2 at 7:30 P.M. at the News-Journal Center. Return to the magical days of the 1930s and 40s with the music of legendary artists Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, Jimmy Dorsey, and Woody Herman, as well as the King of Swing, Benny Goodman. The Clarinet Swing Kings performance features such classics as: Begin The Beguine, Stranger On The Shore, Tangerine, Taking A Chance On Love, I Got Rhythm, Sing Sing Sing and many others. Bennett's witty stage presence, and his penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats, and classic suits, transport listeners back to the time and mood of Benny Goodman's “Swing Era.” Clarinetist Dave Bennett is a totally self-taught musical prodigy who brings the classic sound and music of Benny Goodman to life with incredible technique, style, beauty of tone, and naturalness. Dave began playing at age 10 on a clarinet that his grandparents gave him. He then taught himself how to play Goodman songs by ear, by listening to his grandfather’s recordings. At age 12, Dave was invited to the bandstand of the famous Sweet Basil jazz club in New York City to sit in with trumpet great Doc Cheatham. Dave started as a “road warrior” early—he was 14 when he began traveling through-

out the United States. When he was only 17, he was selected as one of two high school students from a group of 600 to perform as a special guest soloist with The Count Basie Orchestra. He began touring his Tribute To Benny Goodman combo in 2005 and has now performed in over 35 states in the U.S., Canada, and has appeared with 30 orchestras for “pops” shows. Dave made his Carnegie Hall debut in November 2013 as the featured artist with The New York Pops. The Dave Bennett Sextet performs on April 2 at the News-Journal Center, 221 N. Champions Of Faith Special to Seniors Today he Good Samaritan Society of Daytona Beach will host it’s second Champions Of Faith at Pelican Bay, Daytona Beach on Saturday, March 29 beginning at 5 P.M. Proceeds will be used to continue to provide a loving and peaceful atmosphere for their residents through continued renovation projects and new equipment. Proceeds from last year were used to purchase new therapy equipment used by residents in all levels of care at the campus. Two of the purchases were a hydraulic stand-in table —used for stroke recovery and neurorehabilitation, and an electric stim unit— for pain relief and neuromuscular therapy. The night will feature a delicious dinner and guest speaker Pastor Jack Ottoson. learn about us and our mission; with less focus as business associates and more as friends” said Shar Barron, Resource Development Director and the event planner. The Champions of Faith fundraiser included live music, a silent auction, and themed table decorations from attendees. “Before the night was over, people were already asking when next year’s event would be, brainstorming about how they would decorate their table and giving hugs to the new friends they met” said Leona Tinkey, Administrator. “We got the word out about our campus and received donations for much-needed renovations, all while our guests were having a great time.” Over 100 were in attendance the first year and they raised $7,000. This year they have moved to a bigger location since they outgrew the venue they had last year. They have also added to the silent auction
and have set a goal of raising more than twice what they did last year with this event. We love watching how our event has grown. Watching friends and associates have fun while raising funds to enhance the lives of our Seniors, is a big blessing. Good Samaritan is hoping that by getting the word out they will gain even more support this year and sell enough tickets to pack the larger room and achieve their goal! Some of the exciting silent auction items that will be available for bid are: Lunch with Police Chief Chitwood; Com’ N’ Get It Charter Fishing, fragrances and gifts from Dillards, a weeks rental at a condo in Ormond by the Sea; art by local artist, necklace from Masterpiece Jewelry, earrings from Pearls Unlimited, local restaurant gift cards, Disney tickets, Daytona Cubs tickets, a television, a variety of gift baskets, and ROAR motorcycles for Women have contributed. This event would not be possible without sponsors from our community. Chicken Soup For The Soul Someone Watching Over had just finished my grocery shopping, and it was already dark outside. The parking lot was lit, but everyone walked quickly, watching for anyone in the shadows who'd grab a purse or grocery bag. The proximity of other shoppers made me feel safe, and I hoped my presence did the same for them. As I drove along I spotted a familiar person, standing at the shadowy edge of the parking lot. It was my friend, Amy, her leg in a brace and her hands full of shopping bags. She was surrounded by three young men in black muscle shirts, their heads shaved, and arms covered in tattoos. It didn't look safe for Amy. She did not have a car and was trying to get past the group to a bus stop. Quickly I turned into the parking lot, honked the horn and shouted, “Hi, Amy, do you need a ride?” She looked relieved to recognize my old clunker of a car. Quietly and politely, she nodded goodbye to the men and said, “God bless you.” Before she even finished speaking, the three guys slipped through the shadows and disappeared. Amy jumped in the car and locked the door. She said the men wanted money to ride the bus, the same bus she would have ridden home, alone. She had stalled in finding her purse, saying kind things to disarm them, wonder-
I
ing what to do next. Then I arrived with a car and a loud voice. As we left the parking lot, we spotted the three men getting onto the bus. They had bus money after all. I drove Amy to her house, waited until she got safely inside with her shopping bags, and then drove home. By then I'd forgotten all about the ice cream and didn't care if it had melted. My husband was glad to see me home. “We worry when you're out after dark.” “Oh, don't worry about me,” I said, blowing it off and unpacked the groceries. The next day we saw on TV a mug shot of a man who looked just like one in the group that had stopped Amy. He was one of a team of robbers arrested for armed theft near the pharmacy where I'd accidentally driven. Talking with another friend, Lydia, I told her how I'd been driving home that evening after shopping. It had been dark and yet I spotted our friend Amy and recognized her need for help. Lydia gasped as she realized how close the danger had been and how unusual it was for me to be out that late shopping. “Someone was looking out for Amy.” And I knew Who the Someone was.

Pet Care Helping Dog Gain Weight by Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw’s Corner: Recently, an elderly relative was moved to a full-time care facility because she was unable to care for herself or her two dogs. We gladly took in Sadie and Tasha, both small, mixed-breed adult dogs. I think they're very underweight, though— their skin just hangs off of them. What is the best way to help them gain some weight quickly? —Jerry S., via e-mail Dear Jerry: First, take them to the veterinarian for a complete checkup. While they may very well be underweight, make sure this is the case, as some dog breeds have somewhat loose skin. The vet also can determine their approximate age, check for any underlying medical conditions, and test for specific nutritional deficiencies. From there, work with the vet to put together the best diet for the dogs. It likely will include a mix of dry and wet dog foods, in specific amounts, for a certain number of feedings each day. I would not be surprised if they need to be given a nutritional supplement. The
vet may be able to sell these to you, or recommend where to buy them. If it is needed, they may be given medication. It's very important that they take any prescribed medicines as directed. If Sadie and Tasha do not have up-todate vaccination records, the vet will give them the vaccinations they need.
While healthy dogs generally need to return to the vet just once per year, Sadie and Tasha likely will need to be seen more frequently so the vet can monitor their weight gain and health, and adjust their diet if needed. I commend you for becoming Sadie and Tasha's new family—it sounds like they will be well cared for.

Strange But True Rattlesnakes & Spiders by Samantha Weaver
It was Democratic governor and presidential hopeful Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: “A free society is a place where it's safe to be unpopular.” Those who study such things claim that 75 percent of people who deliberately choose to buy a kosher product are not, in fact, Jewish. Smart idea: Some fitness centers are now using the energy that clients expend on its exercise bikes to power the building's lighting. You might not have heard of American inventor Walter Hunt, but he came up with the ideas for an ice plough, a streetcar bell, an early version of the repeating rifle, artificial stone, the lockstitch sewing machine, and a nailmaking machine, among other things. One of his smallest and most useful inventions was the safety pin. In the mid-1800s, Hunt owed a friend $15. In order to come up with the cash to settle the debt, he decided to invent
something. He picked up an 8-inch piece of brass wire he had on hand and made a coil in the middle of it, creating the spring action to open it. He then devised a clasp at one end to shield the user from the sharp point. After the device was patented in 1849, Hunt sold the patent to W.R. Grace and Company for $400, leaving himself with $385 after he paid the initial $15 debt. Incidentally, W.R. Grace and Company made millions of dollars from sales of the safety pin. Are you afraid of rattlesnakes? Keep in mind that the venom of a black widow spider is 15 times more deadly than that of the rattler. Domestic diva Martha Stewart has been struck by lightning three times. ***

To Your Good Health Dust Mites Stir Up Allergies by Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Dear Dr. Donohue: What's all this about dust mites? Do they carry disease? How do we kill them? A baseball bat? —R.H. Dear Dr. Donohue: I am getting nowhere with dust mites because they are practically invisible. They crawl in and out of my mouth and on my face when I am in bed. I have suffered too long with them. —P.B. Answer: Dust mites are hardly visible; they're smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. They don't transmit diseases, but they can create trouble for those who are allergic to them or their waste material. The mite skeleton and waste products can provoke asthma, skin itching, eye itching, sneezing, and dripping nose. Most people, however, live in blissful ignorance of the mites. They have no symptoms. Dust mites don't bite. They feed on dead skin cells, mostly cells that have fallen off the body. They don't enter the
mouth. You really can't tell they're around. They like living in bedrooms —in mattresses and bedding, including blankets—upholstered furniture and carpets. They can take up life in stuffed animals. Allow only washable stuffed toys into a bedroom. They prefer a warm, humid environment, a preference that can be used to evict them. Keep the bedroom cool and dry with a dehumidifier, an air conditioner, or both. The humidity should be less than 50 percent. Mites dehydrate at that humidity. Wash all bedding weekly. Vacuum mattresses and pillows. Encase them in coverings specially made from cotton, polyester, or plastic. Mites don't disappear overnight. The battle against them has to go on for months and months. A victory isn't total elimination, but a reduction in their population. If after all these measures a person still suffers allergic symptoms, visit an allergist for desensitization therapy. Readers may write Dr. Donohue or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Page B-6—Seniors Today Spring Fling—March 14, 2014 A Home Still Key To The American Dream NAPSA espite the ups and downs of the housing market, homeowners and nonowners alike consider owning a home essential to the American Dream. In fact, 85 percent of voters in a recent survey are convinced we should do more to improve the housing finance system because owning a home creates a stronger community and is a valued stable investment for their children’s college education and their own retirement and well-being. “The survey results show that Americans see beyond the immediate housing market to the enduring value of homeownership,” said National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder from Reno, Nevada. “An overwhelming 75 percent of the people who were polled said that owning a home is worth the risk of the fluctuations in the market, and 95 percent of the homeowners said they are happy with their decision to own a home.” The survey was conducted on behalf of NAHB by Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, Virginia, and Lake Research Partners of Washington, D.C. Other survey highlights include: • Homeownership and a retirement savings program are considered by voters to be their best investments. • Americans believe that owning their own home is as important as being successful at their job or being able to pay for a family member’s education.
D
• Eighty percent of homeowners would advise a close friend or family member just starting out to buy a home. • Saving for a down payment and closing costs is the biggest barrier to homeownership. Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners, said, “People overwhelmingly believe that owning a home is an anchor to the American Dream. It’s an anchor to your retirement, and it’s an anchor to your personal economic well-being.” Lake added, “Owning a home isn’t just a policy to people. It isn’t just a commodity. It is a core value.” “Homeownership is worth the risk, pure and simple,” said Neil Newhouse, a partner and co-founder of Public Opinion Strategies. “Even though the market is weak, people who don’t own say they want to buy a house. Almost three-quarters of those who do not currently own a home, 73 percent, said owning a home is one of their goals. Among younger voters, who are most likely to be in the market for a home in the next few years, the percentages are even higher.”
