Mr. And Mrs. Crane
“
A
rkkkkkkk! Arrrrkkkk!” When they landed on the beautiful grassy lawn, covered with water, Mr. Crane asked his lovely red-headed wife what she thought of the surroundings. (EEEekkkk!) “It’s just beautiful. Let’s stay a few days and see how it goes.” (Arkkkkk!) “I’ve caught several flying insects and there is plenty of water.” (At this point, the effect of the crane’s screeching has been established during the early days when they found themselves on government property and started planning). The various reactions of human visitors ranged from curiosity to fear of the longbeaked, long-necked couple. The tall gray cranes stayed for a while and began posing for pictures. Mrs. Crane preened her feathers and said, “Whattaya think, honey?” He then answered, “We may as well stay. The residents have generously provided seed for the birds and I am sure they will not mind if we share some of their food.” She nestled her neck sweetly into his and said, “Thank you so much. I heard that turkeys came here by the dozens but it must have been for vacation only. Except for all the people, we have the place to ourselves.” “Oh, no we don’t. There are dogs, cats, birds, and fish living here. We’re taller than any of them.” “Let’s go over to that little doggie and make friends with her.” “Don’t count on it. She thinks she owns the place. I sometimes see her following that man in a wheelchair but when she doesn’t want to, she lies down right in the doorway, daring people to enter.” “Oh, I have seen her do that… and she won’t budge when someone wants to go in.” The cranes came to the front door and looked at Missy. The pretty little black and white Shih Tzu lady turned toward the door, flipped her tail, and walked away.
“What a little snob!” they said. She can’t seemed to be bothered with us! The fascinating thing about the two cranes is that you rarely see one without the other. That’s because cranes are solitary during the breeding season. Occurring in pairs, they construct nests in shallow water and lay two eggs at a time. Both parents help to rear the young and remain with them
You Name It …by Kitty Maiden
until the next breeding season. They seem to have no fear of humans for they stay where they are as people pass by. Cranes are monogamous breeders. They establish long-term pair bonds that often last the lifetime. Their bonding begins to form in the second or third year of life, but are not necessarily successful at breeding season. Initial breeding at-
tempts often fail, and in many cases newer pair bonds will get a divorce after unsuccessful breeding attempts. Pairs that are repeatedly successful at breeding remain together for as long as they continue to do so. Of Florida’s Sandhill Cranes, it is said that seven out of 22 pairs remain together for about 11 years. It has been a pleasant experience watching our crane couple make themselves at home… looking in windows… posing and strutting for their observers. It is beginning to appear that they will be permanent residents. Awwkkkkk! ST Kitty Maiden has been a staff writer for Seniors Today.

Saving Energy—Every Bit Helps
T
hese days everyone is looking for ways to cut energy costs, and because household appliances are a major source of energy use, it’s important to do all you can to keep them running efficiently. The following environmentally friendly tips will help you conserve energy and keep costs down. Dishwasher: The biggest energy drain with this appliance is in heating the water. Keep in mind that it takes just as much water to clean a partial load as a full one. So, wait until the dishwasher is full before running it. To further reduce costs, eliminate the dry cycle. When the dishwasher is finished with the wash cycles, open the door and pull out the drawers to allow dishes to air dry. This dry method could result in spotting on your glassware. If this occurs, use a rinse agent to allow the water to sheet off the dishes rather than dry in droplets. Water heater: Set the thermostat to a lower setting so that the water temperature never reaches above 120 degrees. Not only will you save energy, you’ll prevent scalding injuries too. Washing machine: Smaller loads use less water but they consume almost as much energy as a large load. So, think before you load. Wait until you have a full load before running the washing machine. Clothes dryer: You can help your dryer run more efficiently by cleaning the lint trap after each load. This will also help avoid a fire hazard. Try not to run the
dryer for just a few items but do not overload either. Refrigerator: To reduce energy consumption and extend the life of your refrigerator, keep the door seals and contact surfaces clean. A yearly vacuuming underneath and behind the unit will also helps it to run efficiently. Be safe; unplug the appliance before vacuuming and dusting the coils.
Day-To-Day
Life …by Kathy M. Bryant Freezer: Freezers run more efficiently when they are relatively full but not stuffed. Also, if you do not own a frost-free variety, you’ll have to defrost the unit whenever there is more than ¼ inch of buildup on the interior walls. Trying one or more of these tips should help you consume less energy and keep your operating costs down.ST

ave you ever tried to write a poem? Nothing to it… just use words that rhyme. Stay away from the word orange. By and by, I often try, to write a piece that rhymes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails … the latter most of the time. I love the greats like Longfellow, Poe, and Emerson and others you know, When I try the trick, with computer or Bic, the rhyme seems to come very slow. The master of speed, and words if you please, and phrases that appear in a flash, Puts words all together like birds of a feather, you know him as Ogden Nash. ‘A bit of Talcum is always walcome.’ he says with a twinkle in his eye, And then he’ll switch gears, oblivious to fears and write about birds in the sky. The pelican he says, ‘can hold in his peak, enough food for a week, and I don’t understand how the helhecan!’ The magic of rhyme, like the tic-toc of time, is a skill that is awkward at best, But it works don’t you see, for you or for me, if patience is a part of the test.
Readers want story, romance, and glory and it all must work out in the end, But my work is corny, and full of ‘baloney,’ and artistry at best is quite thin.
Happy Talk …by George & Peggy Goldtrap I once took a class, way back in my past, about meter and syntax at play, But I tell you the truth, it flew out my roof and none of it is with me today. It’s just not my fate, like Shakespeare or Yates to put sound alike words in a row, and I’d die if I tried from hunger and pride and being a mighty bit slow. So now you can see, a poor example I’d be if poetry was my way of life, No rhyme there would be, if it were all up to me… just agony and pain in the strife. So unlike Byron, Angelou, or Key, you won’t read much rhyming from me, Thus I bid you good day for I’m off to play… this poem seems ready to flee. ST George and Peggy Goldtrap are both actors, speakers, and writers and may be reached at georgegoldtrap@gmail.com

Don’t Let Swimming Turn Tragic
R
ecent headlines, including the death or a 5-year-old boy who drowned in a backyard swimming pool near DeLand, have offered a harsh and tragic reminder about children and water safety. In two other recent cases involving 3-year-old children, one nearly drowned in the ocean in Daytona Beach Shores and the other nearly lost her life in a backyard swimming pool in Palm Coast. Incredibly, the drowning and two near deaths occurred within a span of just 16 days. Nationally, the statistics are staggering. Did you know that drowning is the number one cause of accidental death of young children? Here in Florida, we lead the country in this grim statistic, largely due to the state's year-round swimming weather. Nearly all drownings can be prevented. By observing some common-sense safety measures, the number of heartbreaking deaths and serious injuries resulting from drownings and neardrownings can be reduced significantly. Don't let someone you love become a statistic. Here are some pool safety tips for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to protect children from drowning: • Learn CPR. • Make sure all children attend a certified swimming class. • Install safety equipment such as a fence or gate and a pool alarm. • Keep rescue equipment near the pool and easily accessible.
• Completely remove the cover before using the pool. • Never leave children unsupervised near a pool or other water body. Constantly watch them and keep them within reach.
From The Sheriff
Consider Participating In A Clinical Study
…Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson • Don't allow children in or around the water if they don't have any knowledge of swimming. • Never allow children to swim alone without adult supervision. Designate someone to supervise when children are in or around the water. Watch and be observant. Don't use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. • Remove steps and ladders to aboveground pools when not in use. • Keep toys away from the pool area. Toys can attract young children to the pool, and a child playing with toys could accidentally fall in the water. • Remove all tripping hazards from the pool area. • Keep a telephone by the pool, with emergency numbers posted nearby. • If a child is missing from the house, check the pool first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. ST
The HarmonyAD clinical study is being conducted to determine if an investigational drug given as a pill can safely reduce the symptoms of aggression and agitation in people with AD.
To take part in the study, individuals must: • • • • •
Be at least 50 years old Have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease Experience at least moderate agitation and/or aggression Exhibit agitation and/or aggression at least once a week Have a study partner, informant or caregiver who is willing to participate in the study
Participants will be monitored throughout the study. The investigational drug and study-related procedures will be provided at no cost. Cost of travel and meals on visit days may be reimbursed.

Aging Tree Sponsors Octoberfest Special to Seniors Today
I
f you missed the Seniors Today Fall Festival Octoberfest you missed a fabulous time! Hundreds of seniors convened on Holy Cross Lutheran Church in South Daytona for the annual event. A line with eager seniors was forming as the doors opened promptly at 9 A.M. With picture perfect weather a steady stream of seniors flowed throughout the building during the entire event. Greeted at the door by Keith Goodrum, Account Executive with Seniors Today, and Jenny Kenny, a most helpful angel from Holy Cross Lutheran Church the seniors were off to meet a great representation of senior businesses and services that were available to help seniors with questions and provide information on healthcare, finances, living arrangements, and other senior needs. “We were thrilled to have Aging Tree as our presenting sponsor this year.” stated Seniors Today owner, Bonnie Schillinger. Aging Tree is a brand new concept that opened their doors in Orange City 8 months ago offering a complete source for senior living options, services, and products—it’s a one stop shop solution for all your needs! Once again Easter Seals was on-site conducting hearing screenings for free phones for the hearing impaired.
Halifax Humane Society was there again with some of their adorable furry friends— each hoping to find their forever home. As always, Jim Nelson kept the seniors entertained throughout the entire event with many seniors up on the dance floor. Of course everyone was participating when he belted out his rendition of Roll Out The Barrel. No Octoberfest would be complete without that number! Seniors Today editor, Bonnie Gragg and her trusty crewhands, daughter Savannah and Matthew Nickles were kept busy preparing lunch. Aging Trees CEO, Corey Shenk, even rolled up his sleeves and got busy in the kitchen to help serve all the folks that came through! One senior was overheard to say, “There is an old saying that ‘there is no such thing as a free lunch’ but today that is not true!” A free ‘German style’ lunch was provided for everyone. Schillinger stated, “I think this year was the busiest I have ever seen this kitchen. We served hundreds of people this year!” Schillinger went on to say, “We had so much fun. It brings such joy to see these folks singing, clapping, and dancing with big smiles on their face. It is a great community outreach for our seniors and how nice to have so many businesses willing to partner with us. I know our seniors appreciate having a fun-filled, free day just for them.” ST

ccording to the Mayo Clinic, most people will experience back pain at least once in their lifetime. The intensity of lower back pain is in accordance to the intensity of the injury. Pain lasting for days or weeks is considered acute. Pain lasting for months is considered chronic. Lower back pain is usually triggered by a combination of overuse, muscle strain, and/or injury to the muscles, ligaments, and discs that support the spine. This leads to tension on muscles, bones, discs, and ligaments making the low back prone to injuries which cause pain. Symptoms of lower back pain include shooting pain, muscle ache, radiation of pain down legs, poor posture, inflexibility, and limited range of motion. Common causes of lower back pain may include improper or heavy lifting, injury or overuse, sudden or awkward movements, structural problems such as sciatica, arthritis, ruptured discs, or skeletal irregularities. Risk factors that increase development of lower back pain include obesity, aging, strenuous work, stress, anxiety, depression, or a sedentary job. Acupuncture treatments provide a safe, natural way to alleviate lower back pain. The benefits of acupuncture for lower back pain include the clearing of pinched nerves, increasing circulation, relaxing stiff muscles, reducing inflammation, promoting
tissues healing, improving range of movement, and decreasing pain by increasing amounts of natural pain relievers in the brain. Traditional Chinese Medicine sees the human body as an integrated being. It works with vital energies inherent within all living things to promote the body’s ability to heal itself. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is a vital energy that flows through meridians, pathways that run throughout the entire body. Qi protects the body from illness and provides nourishment to cells, tissues, muscles, and organs.

The Retirement Zone by Donna Maitland—Social Security Manger in Port Orange, Florida
Y
ou are about to enter another dimension. A dimension not only of work and earnings, but of pension and leisure. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. You unlock this door with Social Security’s Retirement Estimator and online benefit application. Next stop… the retirement zone. That’s not exactly sticking to the original script, but some television viewers may be hearing the voice of Rod Serling ringing in their heads right now. The Twilight Zone television program first aired in 1959 and ran for five seasons—and continues to live on in reruns. The series took viewers through amazing journeys with each episode featuring characters who faced unusual or extraordinary circumstances. If you’re nearing retirement now, it may seem an extraordinary circumstance that these days you really can do it all from the comfort of your home or office computer. Amazing but true: you can do so much online, including getting an estimate of future benefits, testing out different retirement scenarios, completing and submitting your retirement application online, and much more! Picture a man. A man sitting at his home computer. He isn’t sure whether he should apply now, wait until he reaches full retirement age, or work a little longer and begin

receiving benefits at age 70. He’s about to find out… with a visit to the Retirement Estimator. The Estimator uses his past earnings and allows him to enter variable future earnings and retirement dates to complete the picture of a retirement he’d like to live. Imagine a woman. A woman with a laptop enjoying a hot cup of java at her favorite coffee house. She’s done with planning and has decided it’s time to take the plunge and retire. Before going to a local Social Security office as her parents and older siblings did, she visits www.socialsecurity.gov and discovers she can complete the entire application online and submit it in about 15 minutes. As in most cases, there are no papers to sign and no documents to provide. She ventures from www.socialsecurity.gov to an audio book and closes her eyes to begin enjoying her retirement. Back when The Twilight Zone first hit television screens, the idea of testing out retirement scenarios or even completing and submitting a retirement application online would have been science fiction fodder fit for an episode of the program. Today, it is reality for us. Try it out for yourself. Visit www.soc ialsecurity.gov and take a visit into… the retirement zone. Here’s An Idea by JoAnn Derson Make your own bed-buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that's knee high, and fill it about two-thirds full with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it's nice and loose. Once it's secure, stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Shower caps can be placed over a planter and used to make a kind of greenhouse for planting cuttings. Just water and place it in a sun-filled window. Be sure to check it often, because even though it might be cool
out, your little greenhouse can get pretty hot with only a few hours of sun. “Loosen tight jeans with a cutting board! First, wash in cold water, then button them around something that's about an inch wider than the waist... say, a cookie sheet, chair top, cutting board, etc. Air dry. It's magical... jeans will be stretched” ST —V.L. in New York Send your tips to Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Chicken Soup For The S oul Our Spouses Endearing Habits
M
y husband has this really strange habit. He calls it logical organization. I used to call it annoying, but I have put up with it for nearly 35 years, so now it is almost endearing. Yeah, I said it... what was once annoying is now endearing. How did that happen? Explanation: being married for close to 35 years! Charles has a little sock pile on the floor on his side of our bed. Usually, there are at least three pairs of socks in it. One pair is his dress socks. Another is a pair of white tube socks he wears with his jeans. The last pair is usually soiled and holey but, as he says, “good enough to work on cars with.” He has this system of “recycling” through his socks during any given week. Since he only uses his dress socks for work, he can usually get two days' wear out of them. His casual tube socks he can sometimes stretch to three wearable days, and his “working-on-car socks” are worn until they nearly fall off his feet. It is a system he has had since we got married.
Try as I might to pick up the socks and organize them in my own way by throwing them in the laundry, or at least putting them in a drawer so I don't have socks on the floor, Charles prefers his method. Today, as I made the bed and stepped over his little pile of socks, I wanted to act annoyed. Instead, I laughed out loud and then picked up one of the tube socks and lovingly held it in my hand. A dear friend of ours lost her sweet husband a while ago. Theirs was a marriage that all of us dream of having. Laughing side by side, hand in hand, raising children together, and loving their grandchildren. She is surrounded by her friends and family, but her best friend is no longer by her side. She used to complain once in a while to me about some of her husband's quirky habits, but now she just smiles in remembrance of him. I can't imagine what it would be like if I never again saw his socks there on the floor beside the bed. ST Visit www.chickensoup.com

Section B October 11, 2013 Tails From The Front by Tyler Stover ast week, Halifax Humane Society celebrated the graduation of the 20th class of Prison Pups N Pals. For the first time ever, all of the graduating dogs were adopted by the day of graduation and went directly to their new homes! To date, over 150 dogs have completed the training program, which boasts a 100 percent adoption rate. In the Prison Pups N Pals program, Halifax Humane Society works alongside the West Volusia Kennel Club and inmates at the Tomoka Correctional Institute. Inmates learn dog obedience training techniques from the professional trainers at the West Volu-
sia Kennel Club. They are then able to take that knowledge and use it to train their selected dog. The program serves a dual purpose that leads to positive futures for both the inmates and the dogs. The dogs receive obedience training that increases their adoptability and prepares them for life in a new forever home. Meanwhile, the inmates are educated on animal care and proper training methods, helping them gain skills that could lead them to jobs in animal services in the future. While in the program, the dogs learn all basic commands and some unique tricks as well. Prison Pups make great pets for any family, as their training eases the tran-
sition into a new home. After adopting a Prison Pup, new owners receive a free sevenweek obedience-training program. Corning Ware by Larry Cox
Q: I have several pieces of Corning Ware and was surprised to see some for sale at a local antique mall. What's the deal? —Susan, Littleton, CO A: Corning Ware was introduced in 1958 and was high-fired glassware capable of going from the freezer to the stove without damage. The first pattern was Blue Cornflower, which was followed by several other popular designs such as Spice O' Life, Renaissance, Peony, Friendship, and Indian Summer. Although prices are fairly reasonable, I predict the values will steadily climb. *** Q: My family lived in Manhattan during the 1930s and was one of the first to have a television set. It is a General Electric model HM-185 console and was purchased by my dad in about 1940. I have always been curious about how much it might be worth. —Carl, Sun City West, AZ A: Your television set was marketed in 1939 and is referenced in the Antique Trader Radio And Television Price
Guide edited by Kyle Husfloen, and valued at $12,000. *** Q: I purchased a collector plate at a yard sale, Pieta by Michelanglo. I was offered $15 for it, but that doesn't seem like a fair price for it. —John, Sioux Falls, SD A: Walk into almost any antique mall and you're likely to find stacks of collector plates, most priced in the $5 to $15 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions, but the market for collector plates is stagnant, and many are selling for a fraction of their original cost. I don't see this trend changing, at least not in the immediate future. ST

Books Charles Manson Reviewed by Larry Cox
C
harles Manson was, according to a person who knew him, just like a hundred other wannabes on the fringe of the L.A. music scene during the 1960s, except for one important fact. He was the trigger to two terrifying nights in August 1969 that led to the gruesome slaughter of seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski. More than 40 years after the killings that shocked and horrified the nation, Manson continues to haunt and fascinate us. Now for the first time, author Jeff Guinn goes beyond the bloody murders to place Manson in context, including his childhood and formative years in his book Manson: The Life And Times Of Charles Manson. Manson was a manipulator even when he was 5 years old. Charlie claimed it was society that gradually turned him into a terrible human being, but in fact, he was the prototypical bad seed who was considered dangerous even in the first grade. The accounts of
his sister Nancy and first cousin Jo Ann are truly chilling, and documented in bloodcurdling detail. Beginning with Manson's West Virginia childhood, Guinn reveals how he became the frightening iconic figure that he is. His ability to command the attention and loyalty of others were developed early. Manson also learned to lie about almost every aspect of his life. For example, his mother married William Manson months before Charlie was born, and he was not—as he often claimed— a teenage prostitute. Also, despite his statements to the contrary, Charlie was always aware of the identity of his father and did not grow up in abject poverty. Quite to the contrary, he was indulged by his grandmother and other relatives throughout his early years in West Virginia. This chilling biography is full of new information. According to Guinn, there was nothing magical or mystical about Manson, yet he was worse than anyone could have imagined. ST Books reviewed in this column are available at your local bookstore.

Pet Care No-Kill Movement Gaining Followers by Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw’s Corner: I've read more and more reports recently of lost dogs being euthanized at shelters even before a posted grace period has passed—less than three days in some cases. How can shelters justify this, and why am I seeing so much in the news about it? —Lila in Tucson, AZ Dear Lila: Some shelters have exceptions to their grace-period rules, and those exceptions vary. It's not a great answer for owners who worry about their dogs getting out and getting lost, and it's tragic for owners whose pets have been euthanized at shelters with such practices. There's a growing movement toward promoting no-kill shelters, which house dogs, cats, and other animals and do not routinely euthanize them, even if they're unadoptable or unclaimed. You may be seeing the results of increased publicity by no-kill advocacy groups. Many argue that it's often necessary to have a program to put down owner-
less dogs and cats, due to overpopulation. No-kill advocates rebut that the stray population is not as high as it's made out to be, and that alternative programs can be implemented to control the population without putting animals to death. For example, nonprofits like No Kill Advocacy Center help shelters develop feral-cat trap/neuter/release programs and develop programs like pet retention (helping owners keep their pets) and foster care. People who are concerned about accidental (or bureaucracy-driven) euthanasia of lost pets can learn from no-kill advocacy organizations about how to take action in their communities to reduce or eliminate this tragic circumstance. This Is A Hammer Pipes And Joists And Squeaks. Oh My! by Samantha Mazzotta
Q: I've got a squeaky-floor problem, but it's a little bit weird. When people walk along the ground floor I can hear wood squeaking against the pipes that are down in the crawlspace. Is this a risk to the pipes? How can I fix the squeaking noise? —Jim in Buford, GA A: You won't know for sure without getting into the crawlspace and then visually inspecting the pipes and the underside of the floor, including the joists. The pipes running along the crawlspace are likely suspended from the floor joists. If they're in contact with the joists, then you might hear the faint screech of wood across metal as the joists rub against the pipes. If the floor and joists are in good condition, then you can reposition the pipe very slightly so it doesn't contact the wood. Do this by lowering or loosening the existing pipe hanger slightly, or replacing it with another pipe hanger or a plastic pipe strap. You must support the pipe in place as you do any loosening or replacing of the
Page B-6—Seniors Today—October 11, 2013
hangers. It should not move more than a few centimeters in any direction, and it shouldn't hang unsupported even during a quick rehanging job. Doing so could cause it to work loose at a pipe joint, and you'll have a bigger problem. You can either rig up a substitute —a sturdy rope or cloth tacked to the joist and wrapped underneath the pipe, for example—or keep the old pipe hanger in place as you attach a new pipe hanger just a little lower. Once you've hammered the ends of the new hanger into the side of the joist, carefully work the old hanger loose as a helper holds the pipe in place. Gently lower the pipe into the new hanger. Repeat at other hanger locations along the run where the pipe contacts the joist. If you see that the joist is not in good condition—it's sagging, or you detect wood rot or water damage—contact a flooring or foundation specialist. Damaged joists can cause problems throughout the house, so you'll want that problem addressed immediately. ST Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com
Motown Christmas At The Peabody Special to Seniors Today
I
t's been a few years since the music of The Temptations, The Miracles, and The Capitols dominated the air waves, but the music of Motown lives on in movies, commercials, and in a new holiday show that hits the Peabody Auditorium on December 12 at 7:30 P.M. The show promises to be jam-packed with all the hallmarks of Motown—impeccable harmonies, dazzling choreography, flashy outfits, and those instantly-recognizable grooves that everyone knows and loves. A Motown Christmas features an all-star line-up of vocalists and musicians assembled from the ranks of The Capitols and The Miracles and former members of The Temptations. The performers, collectively known as The Motown Experience, have each paid their dues performing with Motown legends on stages around the world. “The Temptations were the quintessential Motown group because of their look, their sound, and their hits,” says the event's promoter Ben Hart. “We remember hits such as My Girl, Get Ready, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, and dozens more, The Temptations truly represented the music of my generation,” Hart added. “The performers in the Motown Experience know exactly how to re-create the magic of the groups that made those timeless classics,” commented Hart.
On December 12th, audiences will hear all the Motor City hits they know and love, as well as holiday classics Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Silent Night performed in that inimitable Motown style. Flying in from Detroit for this exclusive area appearance and accompanying the group will be a 12-piece orchestra of live strings and brass, adding yet another level of excitement to those classic arrangements. The Motown Sound was called the sound of young America in the 1960s, but it became the soundtrack of the lives of generations around the world for more than 50 years. “This show will be an unforgettable holiday celebration for audiences of all ages,” says Hart. “I think the children of the fifties and sixties will relish returning to a time when you knew every word to every song—and hopefully, they'll bring their kids and grand kids, too!” ST
Tickets are reasonably priced at $43 & $49 and can be purchased online at www. daytonamotown.com or www.ticketmaster. com Tickets are also available at the Peabody Auditorium box office or by calling 386-671-3471. The box office is open Monday –Friday, 10:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. and Saturday, 10 A.M.–2 P.M.

Senior Service Line Obamacare Scams—Just Hang Up! by Matilda Charles
I
t's one thing to read about how good scammers can be—and quite another to experience it yourself. I received a phone call trying to get me to divulge personal information to sign up for the new Obamacare. After I got over my shock that scammers were actually calling me, I decided to play along for a few minutes to hear more. First, they knew my name. That wasn't too surprising, but when they told me I only had a short time to get signed up for Obamacare or I'd lose my Medicare, I knew how dangerous these people are. The trick they were pulling was to combine the new Obamacare signups with Medicare's open enrollment, as through the two have anything to do with each other. Yes, they both start in October, but that's all they have in common. Specifically, I was told that if I
signed up with them, I would receive my new insurance card for a small fee. They asked if I have a credit card. I said yes. They asked for the number, talking very rapidly, not even listening to my questions. Their main goal was to intimidate me into giving my credit-card number. When I refused, they said my Medicare was going to be canceled for not signing up for Obamacare, and I could go to jail. It was a bit intimidating, even though I knew what they were doing, and I realized how skilled they were. If you get a similar call, hang up. Don't even listen. No one from the government is going to call you about signing up for Obamacare or the Medicare open enrollment. Also, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1877-382-4357 and file a complaint. To Your Good Health Smoking Isn’t Only Cause Of Emphysema Dear Dr. Donohue: I work with a woman who claims she has emphysema. She smokes regularly and finds herself out of breath when coming up the stairs. She is 60. She says when she was 9, a local gas station near her home moved and, in the process, pulled up the gas tanks that provide gas to the pumps. The fumes from the move caused her emphysema. Will you clarify and talk about emphysema? —E.E. Answer: Emphysema is destruction of the millions of air sacs that fill the lungs. It's through these sacs that oxygen reaches the blood. One of the chief signs of emphysema is shortness of breath when active, as in climbing stairs. Emphysema is one-half of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD. The other half is chronic bronchitis, an inflammation and narrowing of the breathing tubes, filled with pus. The inflamed tubes obstruct airflow into the lungs. The chief sign of chronic bronchitis is a never-ending cough. Smoking is the greatest cause of COPD, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, but not the only cause. Workers in mines inhaling the dust were subject to emphysema, as were people who worked in cotton mills. Those who made a living in grain-processing plants also were subject to COPD. Now stringent regulations protect these workers.
I have never heard of emphysema arising in a situation like your fellow worker describes. The booklet on COPD explains this common malady in clear terms. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue— No. 601W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Allow four weeks for delivery. Dear Dr. Donohue What is the purpose of making all Coumadin users make a separate trip to a nurse for having their blood checked? Is there any other drug I could use? —R.J. Answer: Coumadin is an anticoagulant that stops clots from forming; it really does thin blood. The medicine is prescribed when a person has a condition where clots form and might cause a stroke. Atrial fibrillation is such a condition. You can ask your doctor if you're a candidate for the new anticoagulant Pradaxa. With it, you don't need to have the same blood checks. ST
