Personal Statement I believe that the field of architecture has yet to fully embrace technologies like renewable energy, artificial intelligence and robotics. I aspire to continue developing architecture-related technology that creates more exciting places for humans to prosper, while striving towards world-wide sustainability. Technology transcends regional and cultural divides to provide novel techniques in achieving sustainability and enhance collaboration among architects. I firmly believe that well-trained and educated designers hold the power to shape our daily lives for the better; however, in the new era of design, these specific individuals will be required to understand how to utilize, implement and develop these technologies in order to maximize their potential.

DESIGNING WITH EARTH FORCES
THE DAM HOUSE THESIS | ARCH 4020 | W.G. CLARK My thesis is to understand how to design in active environments, specifically waterways, while exploiting their natural powers. The project is a single family home that generates energy from a stream, creek, river, etc. My house can be sited on a waterway anywhere in the world. The home clings to the edge of a waterway and diverts water into a retention pond which directly connects to the home’s dam. The dam allows for the water to pass through, striking the cross-flow turbine, generating energy that is transmitted to the home.

PERFORMANCE SHED JOINT STUDIO | ARCH 4010 | ED FORD
The Joint Studio focused on researching various types of architectural / structural joints throughout the semester. Our task was to develop a new joint system that could generate a dynamic performance space. My PERFORMANCE SHED demonstrates a hanging floor system where the environment underneath is untouched. This system creates columnless spaces underneath while creating a dynamic performance and seating area above. The FLOATING stage and seating platforms could be raised a lowered, ultimately allowing flexibility in the performance area. An outdoor amphitheater lies adjacent to my PERFORMANCE SHED where a movable stage system that rolls along tracks. This stage can be used for both indoor and outdoor performances.

BELOW FREEZING ADAPTIVE DESIGN
OCCUPIABLE SNOW FENCE ARCTIC STUDIO | ARCH 3010 | MATTHEW JULL The Arctic Region can be categorized as an EXTREME ENVIRONMENT. What it takes to live in such an environment is an in-depth understanding of what the Arctic contains and how we can passively harness and utilize it. For our ARCTIC STUDIO we did an intensive study of conditions regarding the Arctic Region. We then took these researched concepts of LIGHT, HEAT, AIRFLOW, PRECIPITATION, and SITE to formulate a design of an occupiable space that responds to the environment. My design was focussed around a SNOW FENCE that harnesses the arctic region’s powerful wind and snow forces. Utilizing a tubular arrangement allows for a reinterpretation of how a snow fence operates, ultimately turning a static and repetitive structure into a dynamic and organic space.

PROFESSIONAL WORK
BRINGING THE ARTS TO AN EMERGING REGION
KITE BEACH THEATER DUBAI, UAE
The Kite Beach theater is located adjacent to a historic fishing village. Fisherman in this region use sail boats that have a particular curve. On the site will sit a 5,000 seat performance venue and 400 seat multi-purpose venue. The building’s entrance is protected from the harsh solar rays by a massive perforated metal mesh that sits atop slender columns. As the curving sail shade twists open at the theaters entrance it begins to wrap flush with the face of the building, looking as if the theater was setting sail. All work done by myself, Brandon Eck. RENOVATING MIES’ WORK
MARTIN LUTHER KING MEMORIAL LIBRARY Washington, D.C. MIES VAN DER ROHE constructed the Martin Luther King Memorial Library in 1972 in Washington, D.C. It serves as the Districts Downtown Central Library. Overtime it received substantial wear-and-tear and required revitalization. Martinez and Johnson Architecture + Mecanoo were chosen to complete a full redesign and renovation of the historic framework. I was honored to be chosen to digitally draft the building’s HISTORIC AMERICAN BUILDINGS SURVEY (HABS). I took MIES’S original blueprints and re-drafted them digitally to be printed on ARCHIVAL BOND PAPER. I produced PLANS, ELEVATIONS, SECTIONS, and DETAILS for the HABS documentation. These efforts are now located in the UNITED STATES ARCHIVES for future generations to have the opportunity to relive MIES’s famous D.C. library celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.

COMPETITIONS RENEWABLE EDUCATION
PEAK AIA VIRGINIA COMPETITION | INDIVIDUAL ENTRY CHARETTE The University of Virginia School of Architecture annually competes in the AIA Virginia Prize Design Competition. The 2016 prompt was focused around a wind farm located in Southwest Virginia along the Blue Ridge Mountains. The project was to include 20 wind turbines and an education facility that would allow a harmonious connection between the observer and the surrounding environment. The exercise stated three main requirements: a 360 degree panoramic view, a museum space that holds a full size blade from a wind turbine, and an amphitheater for educational purposes. My project allowed the occupant to always have sightlines in all cardinal directions while highlighting an axial view north to the vast turbine array. The 150 foot turbine blade is located as the interlocking piece sectionally, and an outdoor amphitheater is situated within the circular courtyard.

A NEW JEFFERSONIAN GATEWAY
raising the bar VIRGINIA VORTEX COMPETITION | TEAM ENTRY CHARETTE The University of Virginia School of Architecture annually holds a design charrette for both the undergraduate and graduate students after each winter recess called VORTEX and is published annually. The 2015 prompt was titled “COMMON SPACES FOR AN UNCOMMON ACADEMICAL VILLAGE” and teams proposed a design that became a new gateway to the University. Located across from a prominent highway, my team’s BAR CONCEPT proposes a new urban district that would facilitate housing and commercial development while channeling traffic into the UVA community. Stitching the surrounding rural environment with the urban flow of traffic in our scheme allowed for a harmonious connection. All images were a combined effort of the entire team.

THE JUXAPOSITION OF LIVING CONDITIONS
RICH MAN / POOR MAN ICARCH.COM COMPETITION | INDIVIDUAL ENTRY
A house for a rich man / poor man is a competition that had no deadline nor prize. This competition was to study and design a space that spoke to how the one percent lives compared to the hundreds of millions who live in extreme poverty. My teammate and I devised a home that is related to the basic five elements of life: AIR, EARTH, FIRE, LIGHT AND WATER. From these basic life elements I created a home that expresses the bleak juxtaposition for how a rich old man lives compared to a poor old man. Each section perspective illustrates how the scraps fall through the cracks of the rich man’s home and trickles down to the poor man’s cave.

HOUSE IN FOREST HOUSEINFOREST.COM COMPETITION | INDIVIDUAL ENTRY
A HOUSE IN A FOREST competition had a prompt that was to situate a home within the wilderness so that the natural elements, flora and fauna, are not disturbed, nor does the architectures footprint bring torment to the ecological community. For my entry I chose a design approach that looked to HIDE the residence beneath the forest’s floor. As shown in the diagrams the home would reside QUIETLY under nature as if it was never there to begin with. The purpose was to have the residents be at one with the natural environment, allowing massive amounts of sunlight in through arrays of skylights and generating renewable energy from the surrounding site. The home connects through a series of tunnels with programmed spaces such as: ELECTRIC CAR GARAGE, KITCHEN / LIVING AREA / BEDROOM, LOOKOUT TOWER, and POWER STATION.

INNOVATION DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE DELIVERY OPTION
“WAY-eck” 2016 - 2019 Waec was a technology startup that developed delivery logistics technology. Our first product was an autonomous ground drone that was able to safely and efficiently deliver local food-sale, convenience, and retail items. We provided quick, low cost, and sustainable deliveries for dense urban and metro areas. Our drones travelled at a walking speed of 4 mph, carried a payload up to 20 pounds, and had a delivery range of 3 miles. During this venture I spearheaded three patents, all of which pertained to creating faster, more efficient systems and methods for autonomous drone delivery - air and ground.
