- Design Objectives:

-To design a series of homes within 3 different areas or neighborhoods that will break the down each homeless person and build them back up so that they can be more productive while on earth. -The reason for this design thesis is to get the homeless people off the streets and back in the real world. This program will build their confidence back up to where it uses to be and also their motivation to go out make something of themselves. While helping the homeless, there will be a design scheme for lowincome homes that with be easy to build up and easy to take down if needed.

Thesis Abstract: The 3 Steps to a New Life

This thesis focuses on ending the problem of homelessness. Through

creating a series of small communities that will be called “The Breakdown”, “The Buildup”, and “The Living”. In each area of living will provide different tools to help the users become better people and get there life on the right track.

This stepping stone of areas will start with “The Breakdown” first, which

will provide the care that they need to become mentally right again. “The Buildup” will provide jobs that they will get paid for and give them an income to live off of. The last part “The Living” will provide the independent living style that the users will need before allowing them to move out on there own and experience the reality of the real world.

Within all of these programs and living areas, each user will be work-

ing in factories created by this program that will build prefabricated housing units. These units will be sold and sailed to whomever is looking for an affordable home.

PART 1 Homelessness through Urban Design

equate shelter. An individual is homeless when he or she has nowhere to live to meet basic needs. Having a home is not just a simple question of having shelter, it’s about the attributes that make up a true home. A home is a place where you are safe and secure, it’s a place you can always go back to, a place where you can

1.1.A- Intro

Homelessness:2 –Adjective: 1. Without a home: a homeless child. –Noun: 2. The homeless, persons who lack permanent housing.

The concept of this project came from a HBO show called “Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County” by: Alexandra Pelosi, where families in Orange County do not have a permanent residence and must keep moving from motel to motel while there kids suffer because of the lack of education. That show inspired “The 3 Steps to a New Life” because homelessness has been going on for centuries and hasn’t changed at all, but has been getting worse.

Through the investigation of homelessness, the biggest question is “How

do homeless people deal with everyday situations”? A homeless person today is considered as the modern caveman because of their ability to survive on what we consider as waste. Homelessness is either a choice or a problem that is trying to find a solution but gets lost along the way. Bill Prelogar, owner and Architect of Concept Idea from the HBO show: Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County Picture Source: http://www.tv.com/homeless-the-motel-kids-of-orange-county/show/79332/summary.html

NSPJ in Kansas City researched homelessness, and found out that there are three different types: the ones who choose to be homeless, the ones who lost a job or went bankrupt, and the ones who have been in either an abusive relationship or just have nowhere to turn.

“Homelessness is the condition and societal category of people who

lack fixed housing, usually because they cannot afford a regular, safe, and ad-

The production of this final project will be based on a series of homes

for the homeless that will be set up into three different neighborhoods: The Breakdown, The Buildup, and The Living. The plan is to allow each person to have their own house or their own part of the home and for them to follow a series of steps, so they can get back on their feet and produce in their life. The reason to why each person will be provided a house or a part of a home is to allow that person to feel as if they own something important or have something worth living for. In today’s society many of the leading causes for homelessness by men: Relationship breakdowns, substance misuse, leaving an institution (Prison, Hospital, ect.) and for woman: Physical or mental health problems and escaping a violent relationship3. The plan is to study the social psychology of homelessness and to figure out a way to create a better environment, through designing a series of new low-income homes that will not only been used within the facility but also 1 University of Wisconsin-Extension. In this part of the Site Analysis Work, it is showing the overall area of

Downtown Kansas city, so that you can understand how different each zone is from one another and understand why the program ended up picking the area that will be used by the three important programs.

Part 3.1- Zoning

In the image to the left you will see several different areas which make

each race (pg. 58 -60) , to where they have had to move or have became homeless.

The program will take this research from each section and learn about

them so that they know what they will be dealing with, when these homeless people and people who have lost there jobs come enter into the Breakdown area. Downtown Kansas City, MO: Good-

3.2.E- Crime Rate within city of Kansas City

Kansas City Crime Rate: 1999 - 2008

As you can see from the graphic charts, that the crime rate in Kansas

City is very high as far as American crime rate goes. Kansas city is actually number 9 in crime in America according to U.S. News Politics- The 11 Most Dangerous U.S. Cities. This is actually what they had to say about the city, “The Kansas City Police Department reports that 2009 saw lower rates of most types of violent and property crimes than in 2008. Most notably, motor vehicle theft was down 19 percent. But aggravated assault grew 4 percent in that period, and forcible rape increased by 11 percent. Altogether, the city’s crime rate is more than three times the national average.”7

The city of Kansas and Missouri is an area that needs help from all over

and that is what this project will bring to the table. This project will hopefully decrease the crime rate and any other problems that the city is having. 7 “9. Residential - Commercial Areas - Overall

These diagrams give a clear answer to why the program

put each site in its location. The sites are all surround by things that the users need to help the people who use this program to grow

into a whole new person.

The Breakdown- The reason to why the breakdown is in

more of the commercial area is because the program didn’t want to take the homeless right out of the areas that they are use to. The program wanted to gradually take them from commercial to residential. So the breakdown area is surround by more of the commercial side.

The Buildup- This site is located in between both resi-

dential and commercial which gives the people both the feeling of being around home like people and commercial people. This site provides a lot of opportunity for the users because of the jobs that they will be doing.

The Living- This is the final stage of the program and it is

located in a residential area so that they can experience what it is like to be next to and interact with people who own homes.

The program wants each person that comes through this area to make a valid change to there life, so that they can make something of there life. “I believe in work, hard work, and long hours of work. Men do not breakdown from overwork, but from worry and dissipation.” - Charles Evans Hughes1

- Why is it important to start with this program first?

The Breakdown brings the whole project together as one and allows us

to learn our users habits, likes, dislikes and more. The breakdown is the facilitator of 3 Steps to a New Life. The meaning of breakdown:2 1. a breaking down, wearing out, or sudden loss of ability to function efficiently, as of a machine. 2. an analysis or classification of something; division into parts, categories, processes, etc.

Site Analysis Part 1.1 - Education “Missouri students are barely above the national average in test scores, and they are well below national proficiency levels. This is unacceptable” - Rep. Tim Jones (R-District 89)3

The education in Missouri is not to the standards that it needs to be,

according to ALEC Education Study. Missouri is ranked 28th in the states of America and is not producing the productivity that the states require. 4 “If legislators are concerned about funding public education, not to worry. States across the country have proved that through education reforms rooted in freedom and accountability, more can be done with less. But it is up to state lawmakers to give parents and students the opportunity to choose what works best for them in securing a promising future.” - Jeff W. Reed, director of ALEC’s Education Task Force5

This is why in The Breakdown area and all three stages of this program

require all the kids to attend school and get the proper education. On the right side of this page shows all the schools that are within walking and biking distance, so that the kids don’t have to travel far to find help. On the left hand side is showing the statics of education within the area of the zip code.

Part 1.2- Transportation

This section expresses the time it takes everyone to get to work and how

most people in the city get around to different areas. The program is trying to cut down on the vehicle use so that the program can be more green to our earth. This is why the design to these areas are so close to downtown. The program wanted to allow the users the freedom to get around without having to get in a vehicle because we know most of them probably do not own a vehicle.

Part 1.4- Weather Data

The importances of knowing the weather changes and how bad the

weather can get is so that the program can make a safe environment for the users of the site. The area that the project is creating needs to be able to handle any type of weathers changes that come our way.

Over the years there have been several bad attacks but there are two that

hit Kansas city the worse.7

On 5/20/1957, a category 5 (max. wind speeds 261-318 mph) tornado 10.7 miles away from the Kansas City city center killed 44 people and injured 207 people and caused between $500,000 and $5,000,000 in damages. 2. On 5/22/1952, a category 4 (max. wind speeds 207-260 mph) tornado 8.8 miles away from the city center injured 3 people and caused between $50,000 and $500,000 in damages.

A- Security Room

The Security Room is where all of the surveillance will be held. The Se-

curity Room will be placed within the main building that holds the classrooms, dental care, doctors office, etc. The security will be able to see everything that is going on within the campus without over stepping any ones personal space. The program finds that every ones personal space is very important and we wont them to feel comfortable without feeling looked at everyday. So this room will play a big part in our security.

B- Security Code Doors

The special locked doors are for faculty and security use only. These

doors will help other workers get around easier and if there are any breakouts they will be able to secure themselves away from the problem. These doors will be locked at all times until someone that knows the code can open the door to use it.

E- Gated Facility

84- Chapter 2

1 “Facility Security.” Encyclopedia of Espionage, Intelligence, and Security. 2004. Encyclopedia.com. 14 Mar. 2012 <http://www.encyclopedia.com>.

The guards that will be working many different shifts will be friendly

and kind to all guest that are using our program. There will be “ZERO” physical harm at this facility. The program does not want to scare the user but make them feel protected and that they can walk around freely. The guards will be dressed in regular clothing so that each person can feel like they can approach them and have a conversation with them.

D- Security Cameras

The Security Cameras will be put up all around our facility but they will

be hidden so that the users will feel free to roam around the site. The cameras will be hidden within our lights which will be put all over the campus.

E- Gated Facility

“Gated Facility” why? The point of the gated facility is so that people

that are on the outside cannot come in and cannot distract the programs work. The program wants the users to get the best treatment as possible without all the distractions from people on the outside. But another big part of the gated community is that it will be see through, so that the users can feel protected and feel free at the same time.

On the outside of all the gated areas there will be a picture of a building

that will mimic the other buildings around it. So from far away it will look like a regular business building but when up close you will see the beautiful Architecture that has taken place.

PART 2.1 Housing Units

This stage of “The Breakdown” is where the program will be designing

the house units for each family type (Large Family, Small Family, Mixed Units, and Single Units). Each group of home will be developed in a different way so that each group can feel important and not as if they live in a project home. The Housing Units will be designed in the recycled containers that have been left behind by the Train Station that use to be there. The design will be sustainable while also functional and beautiful.

each one and put them together in different groups, making different forms and shapes. As you can see to the right of the book there are several different ways of putting shapes together, 26 to be correct. The point of doing this is to think of a way to combine these different people into one, without disrupting the flow

of the program.

This is a big deal because the program will be combining homeless

families, people who only have lost there jobs with people who have never had a job, or problem families with families that love each other. The program wants to try and use every ones abilities and skills that they have required over the years so that they can teach one another and learn from one another. Each Grouping has a unique path way and that is the key to having a successful program.

To the left of the book is showing how the layout of my housing units

they have not left the city which they have been so comfortable with. It is a step program that does not want to throw them into something that they wont be use to. That is why the design will be based off the city and the things the users are use to seeing. For instant street lights, path ways that look like a path of a street and more.

To the right of the book is showing the different containers that will

be used through out the housing units. The containers are perfect structures for homes and are not to big, to where they will feel overwhelmed. Part 2.1- Gated Structure

The Structure on the outer perimeters of the site play a big role in get-

ting each person better. The point of these different and symbolic frames is so when someone sees them they get a “good vibe from it. Each frame means something different and each meaning fits perfectly with each group. The Frame work must work with the Housing units so that the Wall Frame does not fall. So

Part 2.2- Green Roof

The Green Roof is important to this program because green relaxes

people and the more nature you have around people the more they feel comfortable. The program is all about making the users feel comfortable and relaxed. So what ever they can provide for them to accomplish that, the program will do it. The Green Roof meaning is: Roof of a building with plants growing on it, Vines

designed to be environmentally and aesthetically pleasing.1

The program has an idea for the users to take care of the plants and veg-

etation because it will give them something to do and something to care about. You must start small to look big.

The program will set up different times for each group to take care of

different vegetation and different times. Everyday someone new will have a job title over the fresh nature that is around them. Mixed Unit housing is where the green roof is connected to the bigger unit homes and the smaller unit homes have a rooftop balcony. So that they can enjoy the green roof because they have a smaller living space.

The Single Unit Housing is going to have Two separate green roofs that cover the male and women’s sides. They will also have roof top balconies that they can enjoy the green roof.

The system of a Green roof will lower cost in cooling and can give our

program natural fruits and foods. From Green Roofs are Cool, “... and can make a major dent in the “urban heat island” effect in our cities -- that is, the increased temperature due to lots of paved surfaces that absorb the sun’s heat.” 2 So the users will enjoy the nature around them.

This is showing the area that is in between the large family units and the gated wall. The program wants to show what it looks like in a tight space, to show how friendly and beautiful the area is. At night the beams will glow to light of up the path ways because of the over hanging lights.

Chapter 2 -105

Structural Frame? - Complex of columns, and beams, girders, spandrels, and trusses connected to one another and to the columns anchored in a foundation, as well as other components or members necessary for the stability of a structure. Floors and roof panels, not connected to the columns (and called secondary members) are not considered part of the structural frame.

enough to withstand the weather once the containers are in place. The wrapping over the structure is a material that is used on a lot of planes. The reason why is because of the weather conditions that happen there. The structure need a material that can stay outside and not get rusty at the same time. The material the program choose is called the Matrix, which is explained in the Image below:3

Highway Walking Paths - Public Paths

- Public/User Paths

- User Paths

The design for the house units is to be able to allow the users to change

there house around whenever they need to. Since the Containers are only 8ft wide, begin able to allow them to change there place around gives them change and something to do. The idea for this design came from the word change which means to give a completely different form or appearance to; transform.4

Part 2.4- Concept Design

Function Design Idea:

The design for how the program imports the containers into the structure is through using forklifts. The forklift picks up the pre-designed container and slides it into place with the structure. The structure has two opening on the bottom so that the forklifts metal lifters can slide right in and drop off the container. It is a very easy and fast process and allows quick redesign if any containers get damaged. This design can also be moved from place to place since the design is mobile.

Housing Unit Design for more Room:

Grouping of the users: The image above is not the exact site of the users area but more of the idea of how

The design of the container homes came from an original container that the program found online called open side container5. This container can open from the sides but also open from the front to allow entry to big items. This opening allowed me to think of a way to let my users redesign there place when the doors are open and then go back to the regular way whenever they feel like it. This

the actual site looks like. The grouping idea plays a big role in the users living area because the program couldn’t group big families with random single users but they could group smaller families with single user who have only lost there jobs. The reason why is because the smaller families wont take up much room and same with the single users.

Part 3.2- Design Development - This part of the chapter is explaining the development of the container home and how it functions. The container home is a unique idea that gets connected to the structure that is holding it through a unique device that locks both of them together. - It is also showing how the stairs connect to the outer layer of the structure and how they are held together as well. - The last part is the finished product of everything and how it was all put together in the final boards.

Stairway Connection Connect Definition: - To join, or fasten together, as by something intervening; to associate; to combine; to unite or link together; to establish a bond or relation between.1 1 BrainyQuote. Xplore. Web. 25 Mar. 2012. <http://www.brainyquote. com/words/co/connect147148.html>.

The idea to connecting the stairway to the structure that holds the

housing container came from a simple “Hose Connector”. The “Hose Connector” works by, “just pushing the hose onto the connectors. The ribbed surface of the push-on spigots ensures that the hoses are tight-fit after assembly.”2 So the idea is to make an object that does the same thing as the hose connector, by just pushing the two structures together and once connected they are tightened and functional.

Piping and Electric Units for the Containers and Structure

In the design of the structure and container homes, the idea was to

make a way to connect them like if you were to plug in a outlet. So the program came across plumbing units and how they connect pipes to one another by using “Sea Tech Series”3. The idea is to make an object that would mimic the Sea Tech Series but rather than just connecting pipes it would function the housing

units. So the program came across another object called the “Sealed cable and

pipe transit”4. By combing both products the program had made and easy and ef-

In the design of the container homes the program needed to include all

the important things that make a house run. So on the left is showing the HVAC, the electrical box, the surge projector, and the water heater. These objects, once together make a home a home and allow each user to live comfortable within

Conclusion

This is not the final conclusion to this project but it is the final conclu-

sion for the “Breakdown area. This part of the project has been a hard road to figure out but was worth the challenge to finish. This part will allow the users to become better people and will help out in the long run to how the users will live there life. Thank you to all the doctors, dentist, councillors, teachers, and motivators, the program will be able to give the users something they have never experienced in there lives. The 3 Step Program is a unique idea that will use all it has to end homelessness. The Program just needs the users and the motivators to keep the right path to accomplish the goal.
