Brandon Mooi
Selected Works 2015
Hello! I am an ambitious and passionate third year undergraduate student at the University Of Waterloo School Of Architecture. I am a problem solver and strong leader, and I always seek a practical and creative solution to the problem presented to me though it may require out of the box resolutions. I have developed an effective array of skills across many design tools. I continually implement the best mesh of tools in my approach to a design problem. I am a driven and a highly self-motivated individual that consistently delivers more than is expected, and have proven myself a valuable asset to teams and firms I have worked with. My current interests involve investigating how sound manifests itself in an architectural form and how politics and world issues sculpt our architecture. Thank you for your time and consideration

June 6, 2014 LETTER OF REFERENCE Brandon Mooi University of Waterloo To whom it may concern, Brandon has worked for our firm, as an intern, during the summer of 2013, during the winter term of 2014. Brandon worked on several projects, mostly mid to high rise residential buildings. Brandon worked with a small team in the design development stage of a terraced mid-rise Condominium building with a focus on the design of the infrastructure for the helical parking structure as well as the stepping exits. He produced the design development as well as the detailed construction drawings for a steel/glass canopy project including 3-D views. His quick ability with mathematics allowed him to help with the quantification of construction values with our project management team. Brandon demonstrated the ability of working independently, as well as in a small group environment. He was always willing to take on more challenging projects. He was always very quick to understand the key issues and was able to focus his efforts at a level far beyond his years. He was always enthusiastic and hard working. I have no doubt that Brandon will be an asset to any firm or organization, and I wish him every success in his career. Yours,
Alan Tregebov, OAA

EXPO City
AJT/YYZed
Designer [2013-2014]
EXPO City is one of the larger projects that AJTA has in their portfolio with more phases already in development to come. It is a residential tower complex that is located on Highway 7 near Highway 400, and is planned to integrate with the new Hwy 7 rapid transit expansion that will lead into the new subway stop in Vaughan. I have been responsible for many parts of this project in all phases, including: quantities, detail modeling, budgeting, SB10 energy calculations, suite layouts, conceptual renders, and most recently the schematic development of phases 3 and 4 both in the towers and loggia.

Davenport Lead Designer [2014]

Davenport is a student residence project on Davenport Road between Bathurst Street and Spadina Road in Casa Loma. The proposal was to design and develop a student residence for the Casa Loma campus of George Brown College that would offer modern and welldesigned spaces for the students, while fitting into the historical context of the Casa Loma area. The primary focus of the design was to deliver pleasant spaces with concepts like interior courtyards, double height spaces, and exterior quads looking to fulfill the design intent.

Concept Sketch Ground Floor Plan The courtyard concept was an early idea that addressed the interior condition of these student residences. What we were proposing to do was to change the use of that center sp ace from building services and turn it into a pleasurable courtyard space for the students that would occupy the residence. By having this interior courtyard, light penetrates both ends of each room in the building.

Symington Co-Lead Designer [2014]
AJT/YYZed
Symington is a master planning project between Keele Street and Lansdowne Avenue, North of the train tracks in the Junction Triangle District. Our proposal for the site was to develop 2 residential towers and 2 rows of townhouses for the rapidly expanding area. Our design really took into consideration adding onto the rich parkscape that has been cultured in the area and respecting the low skyline already in place. Our concept was to locate the towers closer to the rail line allowing a courtyard condition to locate the townhousesin, giving the residents a semi-public parkette to live in.

Loft First Year [2013]
UWSA
Loft was an urban design project that was located in downtown Toronto on the Waterfront near the Distillery district. The project mission was to take an otherwise underused and underdeveloped piece of land in the area and turn it into highly desirable residential space with basic commercial ground floor space. The shape of the loft came about from experimenting with helix-like structures and seeing what happened at their intersection points. The cladding selected was a common material used in Nordic residential buildings that maintains a more natural look in the skyline of Toronto.

Junk First Year [2013]
UWSA
Junk was a team challenge that arose out of a class design charette whose primary focus was to design a multitenant residential building on an infill site in Cambridge. Our team focused on developing the space in such a way that the interior of the project wouldn’t feel dense in an already crowded city block, and that was achieved in connecting units with an exterior bridge that also led to roof access so tenants could have their own private space on their units and a more common semi-public space below between the units.

Second Year [2013]
AINSLIE ST N
Shift was a public space project that looked at developing a mixed use, multi-program community center in the heart of Cambridge. My design took the approach of developing a cultural icon for the people of Cambridge that would stand as a landmark in the skyline of the city. The exaggerated cantilevered spaces are designed to cause both an expansion/compression feeling, as well as a feeling of being perched atop the city; with the auditorium acting as the crown jewel. The structural design of the building borrowed ideas from Rem Koolhaus’s CCTV building and El Lissitzky’s Cloud Iron.

Snake
UWSA
Third Year [2015]
Snake is currently my work in progress for my comprehensive third year design studio that looks to design a very large and program heavy office and market in the old part of Liberty Village on the east end of Toronto. The requirements are to develop 80,000 sq.m of office space, 5,000 sq.m of commercial/retail space, and 10,000 sq.m of market space. The typological approach I took is atypical to big buildings in Toronto, as I believe towers and podiums don’t offer the best space. Taking ideas from Steven Holl on light and porosity, the snake-like shape allows light to penetrate all parts of the building. LIVE WORK LOFT

Composer/Sound Engineer [2014]
UWSA
Sky City was a Nuit Blanche installation for the winter 2014 exhibition; the installation was located on the patio of Destingo near Bathurst Street and Queen Street West. Sky City is designed to draw people in from the streets with its warm and inviting cloud like shape ribbed with dancing lights. Walking through Sky City is a temporary detachment from the busy life of the city, and a space to relax and feel uplifted by the delicate space created with lights, music, and ambiance. Each rib group is designed to activate as you walk through, giving the sensation of being uplifted as you pass each rib.

BRIDGECAST Host/Creator/Editor [2015- ]
BRIDGE
BRIDGECAST is a new initiative that I have launched with the student group [Bridge] at the University Of Waterloo School Of Architecture. Our mission is to create a platform for people to discuss topics from the economics of Walmart to the inner workings of the Russia/ Ukraine conflict. What we found in the School of Architecture was that there were pockets of people discussing topics like these, but that there was not an environment to further these discussions. So once a week, we raise topics that interest us and talk about them, and highly encourage audience members to join in on the conversation.
Sub Urbem Music Creator/DJ/Producer/Designer [2014- ]
Personal
Sub Urbem Music is a creative label with its primary focus on music. The idea came out of a conversation wanting to share the creative process of making and playing music, while matching the mood and feeling of the music created with images and graphics. We first launched it as a channel to post and curate weekly podcasts that selected fresh music from all genres and combined it into a dj set. Now Sub Urbem has expanded to collaborations with other artists, DJ’s, and producers from around the world, with ventures in music production and video production for live shows and events.
