NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENT

SELECTING YOUR ORIENTATION & ENROLLMENT PROGRAM For your orientation and enrollment, you may choose between an overnight program or one-day program.

Student Programs

Family Programs

Overnight Programs (Recommended)

Family Orientation

Overnight orientation programs benefit students and parents who would like more time to work through the enrollment process and maximize their campus experience. During the overnight program, you will: • Discuss your academic plan twice: • Visit with academic college representatives on Day 1 • Meet your academic adviser and enroll in classes on Day 2 • Meet your orientation leaders in small groups • Attend informational breakout sessions • Participate in evening activities and sessions with other incoming freshmen • Tour housing and the Colvin Center during evening programs • Spend additional time with your orientation leaders to get the full student perspective • Have time on the second program day to visit other departments, such as Scholarships & Financial Aid or Greek Life Check-in for overnight orientation programs begins at 12:30 p.m. on Day 1, with the program concluding between noon and 1:30 p.m. on Day 2 (depending on the amount of time you spend with your academic adviser for enrollment).** **

If you have not taken the math placement exam before your orientation, you must arrive by 8:45 a.m. to complete it before the program starts. More information regarding testing will be included in the confirmation packet you receive after you register for your program.

A successful college experience requires a partnership between you, your family and the university. We recognize your family plays a pivotal role in your success and have created a family program for them that runs parallel to your session. Families will learn about OSU culture, academic services, scholarships and financial aid, campus safety, parental rights and important campus resources. If you choose the overnight program, your family can attend the academic preview with you on Day 1 to help you make some enrollment decisions before you finalize your class schedule on Day 2 with your academic adviser. Each adult guest must pay a $25 family orientation fee, which covers some meals, parking, printed materials and other resources. You can pay this fee online and list your family members when you register for your orientation program. Future Cowboy Program For guests ages 12 to 17 attending orientation and enrollment, we offer the Future Cowboy Program, which allows participants to experience OSU by exploring campus, learning about the academic colleges and majors and touring Gallagher-Iba Arena and Boone Pickens Stadium. Those ages 15-17 can also join one of our OSU campus tours for part of the day. Each participant in the Future Cowboy Program must pay a $10 fee, which covers meals and other materials. As with adult guests, this fee is paid online when you register for your orientation.

One-Day Programs (Alternate) If you can’t attend an overnight program, we offer alternate one-day programs. These programs are designed for students who have attended multiple academic campus events, are certain of their degree choice and can make decisions quickly. During this enrollment day, you will meet with your academic adviser in the afternoon to enroll for classes, while family members attend a family information session. Check-in for the one-day program begins at 8:30 a.m. The program concludes by 5 p.m.

“The best thing about OSU is the people. Within one semester, you already have your OSU family. Those are the people who make every day in college special. Those are the people who you’ll have for the rest of your life.” —Bailey Wallace Senior, Communication Sciences And Disorders

CHOOSING YOUR MAJOR Choosing the right academic path isn’t always easy. You should consider the decision from many angles to find the best fit for you. Almost every degree leads to an array of career choices, depending on how you focus your interests, knowledge and abilities. OSU divides degree programs into six academic colleges, which we encourage you to research and explore before your orientation program. When you applied for admission, you indicated the degree you wished to pursue. If your interests have changed, you will have the opportunity to request a major change when you register for your orientation program. If you’re unsure about your path, it’s best to wait until orientation to make any changes. We will verify your decision to change degree areas when you check in for your orientation program.

It’s important to understand your major declaration could affect college- or degree-based scholarships. For this reason, if you have received any such scholarships, you’ll want to be careful about changing your major area since it could nullify your scholarship. If you are changing into a degree area where you may be awarded scholarship opportunities, you should make an official change of major before orientation by emailing the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (admissions@okstate.edu) from your OSU email account to request changes be made immediately for scholarship reasons.

“One of best things about OSU is the homecoming experience. After participating in Football Frenzy, the pep rally, the sign competition, Harvest Carnival and pomping or welding for countless hours, you can be exhausted. But when Walkaround comes and 80,000 people get to enjoy the house decs, all those hours are worth it and the sense of community is unmatched.” —Greg Stewart Senior, Business Management

Campuswide Advising Options In addition to the college-level academic advising units listed earlier, OSU offers specialized advising for specific populations: Learning and Student Success Opportunities Center (LASSO)

Pre-Health Professions & Pre-Law Advising

214 Student Union | 405-744-5333

213 Life Sciences East Pre-Health 405-744-9965 | Pre-Law 405-744-5658

lasso.okstate.edu Students deciding between majors housed in different academic colleges or those who are uncertain about their academic path may be advised through the LASSO Center. In addition, students admitted through alternative admission programs are advised and receive specialized services through the LASSO Center. Because LASSO advises majors across the university rather than within a specific college, its services focus on transition and major exploration opportunities. Once a course of study is decided on, students transition to the appropriate academic college to complete their degree.

prehealth.okstate.edu prelaw.okstate.edu Students pursuing careers in law or medicine may be “pre-law” or “pre-med” from any major. Choosing a degree area only because it includes a “pre-law” or “pre-med” option is not always the best decision. Choosing the degree area most closely related to your overall interest or other career options is key. Academic advisers and career consultants can help explain various degrees with courses and experiences that will prepare you for professional school.

The Honors College 101 Old Central | 405-744-6799 okstate.edu/honors Students accepted to The Honors College work with two academic advisers each semester — the academic adviser in their degree area and an Honors adviser.
