A BRIEF HISTORY OF

THE VENETO TENNIS CLUB

The Veneto Tennis Club Inc. was incorporated by letters Patent on June 23, 1993 as a non-profit corporation for the purpose of constructing a year round tennis complex. The Board of Directors in the Veneto Tennis Club is composed of 11 Directors, 7 of which were members at the time of incorporation, 2 are annual members of the Club and 2 are ex-officio Directors, being the President of the Federation of Veneto Clubs of Ontario and the Liaison Officer of the San Marco Veneto Club. The Federation of the Veneto Clubs and Associations was incorporated as a nonprofit organization for the purpose of uniting all the various clubs and associations which were composed of people originating from the Veneto region of Italy. The basic purposes of the Veneto Federation are to promote the cultural heritage of its members and for the community at large, and to share its cultural heritage. In the development of its various programs, the Federation places great value on the family and on the Veneto culture in the Canadian environment. The recreational and cultural facilities of the Federation are open to ALL Canadians who abide by the rules and regulations established by the Board of Directors of the Federation. In October 1987, the Veneto Federation together with the Town of Vaughan, entered into a lease agreement with the Ministry of Government Services, for the use of a 75 acre site which had previously been designated Public Use Area for recreational purpose, a lease which extends until the year 2035. Extensive feasibility studies have been used as a guide in a multi-phase development plan which will eventually result in a multi-purpose recreation and cultural centre. One such plan was realized when the Veneto Federation entered into an agreement with the Veneto Tennis Club to build and manage an indoor tennis facility. The Directors were successful in raising $300,000 from 50 private investors, another $300,000 was provided as a 10 year loan from the bank. The additional financing was provided by 4 key members of the Club. Later, the Club was refinanced and the key individuals who had advanced funds were paid off. 3

A BRIEF HISTORY OF

THE VENETO TENNIS CLUB (cont’d) Annual memberships and court usage provide a substantial portion of the revenue to repay the loan, generate revenues to pay operating expense and to provide for future expansion. The initial loans have been paid off. To support the recent expansion to 6 courts, surface and lighting improvements, additional monies have been borrowed. The current indoor facility is the envy of the Metropolitan Toronto tennis aficionados. The building is spacious, well-lit and well-ventilated. Additional improvements are currently being studied. The Directors wish to provide a professionally administered program which makes optimum use of the courts, provides a pleasant club atmosphere for members of all ages, supports the development of our junior players and provides opportunities for instruction, social play and organized competition. As a member of the Veneto Tennis Club, one is automatically a member of the Veneto Centre and thereby is able to participate in and benefit from its social, recreational and cultural offerings.

PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Dear Members It is remarkable to see how far we have come in building a reputation as one of Ontario’s elite tennis clubs. Because of this rising distinction, our teams are enjoying more visibility and our club is attracting more tennis enthusiasts. With that said, I am excited to share with you the improvements that have taken place in our programs and in the facility. As respected members of the Ontario Tennis Association, the elected board and I decided to increase the number of tournaments the club will host, offering our members more opportunities to play and expanding the club’s appeal in surrounding areas. We are also focused on increasing the number of junior players presently enrolled in the club. To that end, we have created a new position of Program Tournament Director. The Program Tournament Director in concert with the Head Professional will oversee tournaments and is also responsible for player selection based on their skill level. As a result, players will be able to advance within competitive tournaments. The tournaments will provide a challenging tennis experience in a more structured environment. Equally important, our instructors continue to run the regular tennis programs with a strong emphasis on technique and the finer points of the game. As we continue to strengthen our tennis programs, we are also enhancing our facility: the change rooms have been renovated and a patio has been constructed at front of the building. I hope that these changes will reflect our efforts to make Veneto Tennis Club well known at the provincial level and also as a top tier high performance instructional facility. I am pleased to have been re-elected as President of the Veneto Tennis Club. I thank you for your support and thank the Board of Directors for their commitment to our shared vision of creating a growing tennis community here in Woodbridge.

Gesualdo Mastruzzo President 5

JUNIOR TENNIS ACADEMY Veneto Tennis Academy’s Winter Programs offer technical, tactical and mental training in a remarkable synergy to address the WHOLE player. Representatives of our staff will regularly observe players’ performances, evaluating and directing progress to ensure individual needs and goals are being met. Short and long-term goals are established to gear each student’s development towards perceivable accomplishments. Full Time Veneto students are expected to play at least four OTA tournaments during the winter season. Parents will receive regular progress reports. These programs provide a more intensive training for players, who have long term vision to be a tournament player, to improve their ball controls such as height, distance, direction, speed and spin with focus on stroke technique.

Please enter the court after the second buzzer. Do not walk onto another court during a game. Wait for the players to finish the game, or minimally the point, before walking onto their court. It is very distracting to have someone disrupt a game in progress, so if you must cross another court, do so after the game is finished, and go around the court, not through the middle. To retrieve a ball from another court, wait until the players have completed a point to ask them to return it to you. To return a ball to another court, wait for a break in play on their court or roll the ball to the back of their court. Under no circumstances should you run over onto their court in the middle of a game to retrieve the ball yourself. Show respect and courtesy to your opponent(s), your partner, and others on or near the courts. Keep your voice down and confined to your court as much as possible so as not to disrupt players on adjacent courts. If you get into a loud dispute with your opponent, take it off the court and away from other players and contact management. Always wear proper tennis shoes. This isn’t because of the country club dress attire, it’s because black-soled shoes leave marks on the courts that are difficult to get off. Make sure you wear tennis shoes onto the courts. The proper shoes also give your feet the needed lateral support when running down balls, and making abrupt changes in direction.
