Recently the nation as a whole marked one of the most devastating loss in the shape of Abdul Sattar Edhi’s soul. Edhi was undoubtedly the pride of Pakistan – marking his name in the history as one of the most charitable person in the world. He was known for his giving nature and never was he seen with a sense of greed or lust for fortune and money.

To honour Edhi for his services and contributions for the state, he was given a State Funeral where he was honoured by being given a gun carriage or carriage on wheels, only honoured to state officials and leaders.

In Pakistan this tradition had only been carried out for the three times now. The first state funeral was arranged for our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, secondly for General Zia-ul-Haq and thirdly for our very own Abdul Sattar Edhi. Abdul Sattar Edhi had set a mark in the eyes of all young and old, rich and poor! He not only melted all hearts with his departure but availed all the respect one could have thought for such a noble human being.

Visualization Muhammad Rizwan Khizar Deen Sufyan Baghdadi

He left no opportunity for charity by any means, even after his demise, he donated his eyes, owing to the fact that no one in the world till date had ever done so much for the sake of humanity, the way he did.

Financial Adviser A.I. Khalid Riaz Haider

Some souls are meant to be trend setters. We salute you Edhi for your courage and motivation. This country isn’t going to remain the same without you. We promise to keep your mission and legacy alive with the aim to bring Pakistan according to the vision of Quaid-e-Azam and later Abdul Sattar Edhi. #IamEdhi

The time was near but no one knew, and soon from Earth, again a soul flew. After years of continuously serving the fellow beings, the moment arrived to let go of life's reins. With complete silence, a heartfelt goodbye was bid, as soon as his breathing immensely began to fade. An angel on Earth; so kind and humble, left us for heaven; his death, a noble cause. Millions of hearts cried on the departure of the special soul, even the mountains and forests echoed a melancholic howl. The loss suffered couldn't affect the poorest rich man, but the ones who were helped by the richest poor man.

earthquake. The focus is on long-term rehabilitation of the poor in case of hunger and poverty. The foundation has an educational scheme, which deals with studying, teaching, training, pharmacy and paramedical schooling to the maximum not noticed phase of the society. It gives transportation facility in emergency to more than 1,000,000 individuals yearly. At the countrywide scale there are 250 Edhi facilities. The employer stored 20,000 deserted infants; trained 40,000 qualified nurses and 50,000 orphans are housed in Edhi houses. One million infants have been delivered in Edhi maternity facilities. The agency has 3500 employees and lots of volunteers were generating its personal sources from donations of people with no help of the government. Edhi doctrine is a collective welfare program primarily based on self-assist to amend and increase present institutions in Pakistan. It's far definitely brilliant that the lion’s percentage of the Edhi basis’s $10-million price range comes from non-public donations from persons in Pakistan, inside and outside the country. The Edhi foundation refuses to take any help from the government thereby retaining its independence. In 1980, when Pakistan’s then-President Zia-ul-Haq despatched him a check for 500,000 rupees, Edhi returned it. While the Italian government presented him a one million donation, he didn’t accept it saying, “Governments set conditions that I can't accept,” and refused to provide any further information. The man with a great cause highly recognized by the world in general and Pakistan in particular was given Nishan-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan in 1989. He was recognized in the world over as in 1986 he was awarded with the prestigious Magasay award by Philippines, Balzan Peace Award in 2000 by the Italian Government and a Peace Prize from U.S.S.R for the services in the Armenian earthquake disaster in 1988.

Abdul Sattar Edhi had an imaginative and vision of chains of welfare centers and hospitals that could be opened to relieve the ache of those tormented by illness and forgotten about. He thought of the in-human treatment meted out to the mentally ill, the insane and the disabled humans. Even at this early age, he felt individually liable for taking on the challenge of growing a system of offerings to reduce human miseries. The task changed into big; he had no resources. However it turned into something that he needed to do despite the fact that he had to walk to the streets with a cap in hand to beg for this cause. Today, Abdul Sattar Edhi’s foundation is certainly one of the largest charity which runs the world’s main ambulance similarly it

also performs the world's largest free domestic treatments, women's accommodation and a free treatment center for the mentally ill men and women. However, on the eve of 7th July 2016, the head of Edhi Foundation breathed his last at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) after kidney failure, leaving the entire nation in a moment of shock and sorrow, with eyes full of tears and hearts full of distress. Donating his eyes for someone in need, buried in Edhi village where he had planned to rest in peace 25 years ago, Edhi left the nation orphan!

MORE THAN ANY OTHER LIVING FIGURE, EDHI ARTICULATES JINNAH'S VISION OF A COUNTRY WHICH, WHILE BASED ON ISLAM, NEVERTHELESS OFFERS A WELCOME FOR PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS AND SECTS.

Abdul Sattar Edhi’s tireless work has helped save hundreds of thousands of lives and shown us what it means to be a man who works for the people, read a statement issued by PM Office. “Despite all his success, he has always stayed humble, living a simple life in a small house barely large enough to encapsulate his enormous heart.” In his most difficult hour, may Allah bestow upon him all the fortune that he bestowed upon the people of this country and treat him with the care that a man of his stature deserves, the statement added. Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi was a man perceived by most as a simple social worker. I recognized him as a role model for the world. Practical involvement in Mr. Edhi's work was natural to anyone in his presence. Bathing corpses and wrapping coffins, spending entire days at collapsed building sites, in psychotic centers and orphanages, Mr. Edhi was a man who had not taken a single day's vacation in his entire lifetime. A man, who spoke of a hundred years ahead, instead of the next two. A man, who conceptualized, created and sustained a welfare network that covered the length and breadth of a nation where every other institution was failing. A man who, without education, affluence and power, laboured ceaselessly to one day convert a third-world country into a welfare state – Abdul Sattar Edhi, Father of the Nation!

SIGNS OF A WORTHLESS BRAND CONSULTANT By: Isra Shams You can also judge the quality of brand consulting advice by the number of concepts the consultant tries to sell you. There is no one accepted term for what most call brand positioning. You can call it brand values, brand attributes, value proposition and so on. But a decent brand consultant will focus you on one concept to represent what you want to stand for in the market. The crapper the brand consulting firm the more concepts they try and sell you. Circles atop circles, concepts upon concepts, and before you know it you have a brand essence that looks like the D-Day launch strategy and your staff need a PhD to work out what it all means. You can rely on some shit brand consultant in the comments section below to explain why brand attributes are distinct from brand emotions or how a value proposition is different from a positioning statement but ignore them. They are, by definition, shit. Next, look out for certain trigger words, which, if your brand consultant proposes them, mean he or she is unworthy. Innovation is a product-orientated word and worthless as a result. For every customer who tells you they bought your brand because it was the most “innovative one” I will give you a thousand quid. Remember as well that thousands of brands, badly advised by an army of shit consultants, have already claimed innovation as their own differentiating value, so the only way to be innovative is not to use the word. Words like “lifestyle” and “aspirational” mean absolutely fuck-all too and should tell you volumes about your consultant’s abilities to guide your brand. And if anyone from your consulting firm even starts to utter the dreaded words ‘integrity’ or ‘trusted partner’ stand up and run for the nearest exit. If they even say the magic words ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’, throw something heavy at them and ask them to leave. Ditto, if they have a picture of a cow being branded in their slide deck or a quote about reputations taking decades to build, you know what you have to do. If your consulting firm has a trademark attached to their special branding methodology or they have an approach named after an acronym that spells something sexy like “RESULTZ” or “PERFORM” you should immediately stand up and write WANK on the nearest whiteboard and exit the meeting room stage left. A separate but equally indicative failing is to incessantly cite Apple and Steve Jobs to any and all clients as a paragon of excellence and instruction for brand building. If you find yourself sitting through a ninety-minute sermon on the power of Apple’s branding and its relevance for your portable toilet business it may be time to press the escape button.

10 BRANDS

It’s not a magical list but, in my experience and that of my slightly depressed marketing mate, it could just save you a six-figure sum and a report that is literally not worth the paper it’s written on.

BM: You started your career in TV sales in the UK, thereafter you moved over to the agency side, why did you opt for this change? IM: I worked for TV stations initially and then moved to the advertising side. I was approached to run an agency in Poland in August, 1996. I resided there for four years and then moved to Universal McCann in Moscow and so I’ve been associated with this company since, in different regions and divisions. In July, 2015, I first met Mr. Masood Hashmi, who then offered me to come to Pakistan and work with him. This was more of an opportunity for me and so I agreed to join in. BM: Do you think your time working in Asia, changed your perspective? IM: The McCann network is a very warm network, everyone is friendly and very helpful. I’ve been to India quite a few times and not totally but Pakistan and India are quite similar in terms of climate and culture. Coming to Pakistan has been an eye opener; and so working here has shown that the people here are very active and organized, but in a chaotic way. Though, my time here till date has been worth the while.

PEOPLE SAID TV IS GOING TO DIE, BUT TV IS NOT GOING TO DIE BECAUSE THE TV IS MORE OF A MONITOR THESE DAYS! BM: What is the next big thing we will witness by Orientedge UM? IM: I think there are a lot of good agencies here in Pakistan now, they have got the kind of support that we need. However we are gearing ourselves up digitally, as in the near future the market is going to get digitalized. People say that TV and print media is going to die, I’ll tell you that they will not die anytime soon because the TV and the print media is more of a monitor these days, so basically it’s all going to get digital depending on the penetration of the market. So yes, digital is the next big thing but even with digital fragmenting in terms of social media, nevertheless, all the other mediums are kicking too and coexisting. No media is ever going to die, they’ll all go forward! BM: Give us your reviews about the “Digital Evolution.” IM: It is amazing how things have changed, I mean pick up a DSLR and you’ll get 24 mega pixels, pick up a gadget (mobile phone) and you’ll get the same or close enough result. These mobile phones have replaced so many things, all you have to do is go through the app store and you’ll everything, from camera to games, and even your bank account feed, hence you basically have everything in your pocket. BM: What in your opinion is the need of a foreign affiliation for a third world country like Pakistan? IM: I think it helps, for example, we are affiliated with Universal McCann, and there are so many things they can provide us with such as case studies, especially for agencies like ours. I think it’s important as all our clients are multinationals so this way the clients won’t have to work

with different agencies; they would be able to access their related agency anywhere.

MY MANAGEMENT STYLE IS PROFESSIONAL BUT INFORMAL, TOUGH BUT FAIR BM: What are your views on Competitive Advertising? IM: As far as the world of competitive market has taken an initiative, I think about the poor agencies that begin with great plans and then suddenly get hit by the chaotic market competition, then running head on heals in making other plans overnight. It surely costs a lot! BM: With reference to the recent Brand War trend of marketing, how would you react if two brands of your agency were in an advertisement war with each other? IM: I do not think it’s a major issue to have competitive clients within an agency. Firstly, we are a professional organization, I would have separate planners on the accounts but I would see all the data overall as I’d be supervising everything and I think I can be trusted so as to not to spill the beans, since if planners would be discussing marketing strategies of each other with one another then we would lose the campaigns overnight. So, I would certainly not be making them sit in the same office as we have to respect the clients need for confidentiality. BM: How would you describe your management style? IM: Professional but informal, tough but fair. My boys and girls are adults and they know what to do all, I have to do is mentor them along the way. I have empowered them with decision making as long as they can justify it. Eventually, we are all on the learning curve. BM: From all the experience you hold now, what advice would you give to yourself as a starter? IM: I think as we grow old we grow slightly wiser; no job is difficult. We have so many facets of what we do from which none can be ignored. I think I have pretty much done okay so far, I am not sure that I have changed too much, I think all the time we spend partying in our heydays are basically building our public relations. I still have good relationships with people I have known for 20 years or more. So basically, build strong contacts and know your numbers inside out.

DIGITAL IS THE NEXT BIG THING. EVEN DIGITAL IS FRAGMENTING NOW IN TERMS OF SOCIAL AND PROGRAMMATIC NEVERTHELESS ALL THESE OTHER MEDIUMS ARE KICKING TOO THEY’RE ALL COEXISTING, NO MEDIA IS EVER GOING TO DIE

Twenties are the time when the majority of us take up our first occupations. Despite the fact that it’s huge to finally start earning and be independent, corporate life is not at all like we imagine it to be in our more youthful years. Having a Job and earning for yourself gives you a pride and when we were young and pondered we couldn't hold up to begin the adulthood part of our life. But news flash it's unpleasant and unsatisfactory. Some truths about corporate life no one will ever let you know.

• The more productive you are at your work, the more you will be troubled with it. • No one thinks about your individual advancement in the corporate world. The only thing that is in any way important is the thing that you add to the organization. • There will come a period when you will take up work only for the cash and that's it. • Desk jobs kill creativity. • Very frequently, you will be held responsible for tasks that weren’t even your accountability in the first place. • You will manage multiple assignments other than what you were at first enlisted for. Your extent of work will just continue expanding. • You will be persistently made to think that you need the company more than it needs you, and that, is not true all the time. • Meetings are a waste of time always. Nothing good has ever come out of them, really. Most people aren’t listening, and the ones talking are far away from reality. • In case you're slow, you'll be mocked by your supervisor. In case you're proactive, you'll be reviled by your partners. • Your necessities as a worker would go totally overlooked, once in a while. You won't get what you truly merit until you raise your voice and put your foot down. • You will be made to work with unimaginative people and it will be the most complex task ever. Your team-members would neither be of any help, nor would they make it possible for you take everything in your own hands, and it will destroy your passion. • People around will continually pull you down with their skepticism only because they don’t like you. • Nobody is going to be pleased about, you staying in extra hours every single day but the one time you leave a little early, hell will break lose. • Whichever new proposal you volunteer for, become your liability. • The HR Department is inadequate, wherever you go. • Office politics is unquestionably not a myth. • But meritocracy is. EVERYTHING CHANGES; WHEN YOU CONSIDER CHALLENGES AS BLESSINGS

Have you ever seen how habitually the worries we confront additionally contain a surprisingly positive turn of events? If not, maybe you haven’t been looking carefully enough! Without a doubt, life’s challenges typically appear like embarrassments when they interfere with our timetables, or hold back something we need to do. Isn’t that part of the reason we call them challenges? When we’re progressing in the direction of an important goal, the last thing we need is to confront unexpected challenges. At the point when that happens, it generally indicates a major suspension, included expectation to learn and adapt more major cost, or some other unplanned confusion. Everything changes when we figure out how to see life’s difficulties in a whole new light. Imagine a scenario in which we could figure out how to consider them to be very advantageous experience, activities in learning, or even as a surprisingly positive turn of events. Don’t you think it’s a welcome shift in awareness? In the real world, with the right mental attitude of mind we can totally reframe the way we encounter challenges. Also, examining the right questions is one of the best approaches. Mostly I used to ask different question from challenges whenever I encounter any challenge, some of them I’m sharing with you, which are more effective.

CHALLENGES ARE WHAT MAKE LIFE INTERESTING. OVERCOMING THEM IS WHAT MAKES IT BEAUTIFUL

22 BRANDS

Frequently we see challenges as irritating, when truth is told it might hold an awesome chance to learn and develop! If we start by asking ourselves, “What I can pick up from this experience?” it quickly puts a more positive twist on the condition. It allows us to find something worth acknowledging about our experience. It makes it possible to perceive open quality that may have gone unnoticed, and to see opportunity and probability rather than irritation and inconvenience.

One notable reason why a challenge might threaten us is because we don’t feel prepared for taking care of it. We may have limited observation of our own talents; therefore we trust that the challenge is greater than us. If we learn to see every challenge as a chance to become stronger and more capable, everything changes. We can utilize challenging situations to open our undiscovered qualities and capacities. Every time we do this it will expand our confidence until we start to see most challenges as chances to bind our own personal power to a much greater degree. How can I use this to my advantage? As a general rule, we tend to see a challenge as a burden – Do you think is it necessarily true? At the point when something gets in our direction, what do we do? Don’t we begin scanning for an alternate system to finish our objective? The challenge may end up being a gift if it helps us find a superior method to accomplish something. Cheers to the challenge! Asking “by what method would I be able to utilize this challenge to my advantage” opens our soul to alternatives that we never would have considered something else. At whatever time you encounter self-improvement, you help the people around you somehow. Second, it advises you that each challenge holds the seeds for unlimited blessing and opportunities. Challenging situations are piece of life, that’s not going to change. However, that doesn’t indicate that you are a target of situation. Your attitude and recognition are something that you make. They are not directed by your circumstances. You always have a choice!

THE KEY TO LIFE IS ACCEPTING CHALLENGES. ONCE SOMEONE STOPS DOING THIS, HE’S DEAD.

WAYS TO WORK SMARTER AT THE OFFICE All of us work hard in life, there is no doubt about it. We work hard in our jobs so we can excel at work. We work hard to maintain our relationships. We work hard so we can achieve the best results in our life. After working hard for an extended period of time, there comes a point when we realize that there’s only so much we can do by working hard. Hard work is definitely the brick of success. However, when you have 24 hours a day, just like everyone else, you have to start working smart too to get the maximum value for your time and effort. Working hard gives you results, but working hard and smart at the same time gives you the top results. In this article, I am sharing 7 of the best, personal tips on working smart. Here they are: 1- GET CLEAR ON THE OBJECTIVE. Everything has an objective. It’s just a matter of whether you know it or not. The people who don’t know the objective of what they are doing are the ones who waste the most time. If you know your objective, you can be laser-focused and cut right to the chase. The clearer you are, the better. 2-CREATE A VISION. Now that you know your objective, what is your vision? See the objective as your direction and your vision as your destination. Knowing your objective lets you know where to travel in, while knowing your vision helps you charge forward.

24 BRANDS

3-CREATE STRUCTURES TO MAINTAIN YOUR FLOW. If you know how motivation works, you will know it comes in

bursts and waves. It’s not possible to maintain a 100% full motivated state every single second. Hence, you need to create on your environment to maintain your flow. Examples are your physical environment, people you hang out with, your routine and communities you are a part of. 4-STOP BEING A PERFECTIONIST. Being a perfectionist isn’t all that perfect if it prevents you from achieving more. Release the perfectionist mindset. Stop obsessing about the details; they often take care of themselves. 5-LEARN FROM OTHERS. You should listen to others. While talking to different people, it gives you a variety of new and innovative ideas. Your mind gets fresh. There is never a stop to how much you can learn from others. 6-IF IT WORKS, STICK TO IT. If there is already a success formula that’s working, then reapply that formula. There’s no need to innovate or reinvent the wheel for the sake of it. SECRETS TO FINDING YOUR REAL AUDIENCE! By: Isra Shams The game has changed in the world of media. You’re not just looking at clicks, eye views and readership; you must know the value of a consumer and start to quantify it.” Following are the ways for businesses to create content and convert prospects into customers. REALIZE THE NEED OF THE CONSUMER Businesses must know what the consumer is doing across content, social, mobile, and search. We can’t think about storages of search or social strategies. There are many villages still without electricity, and those that do get less than their requirement having to face constant load shedding for hours at length sometimes on a daily basis. Last year Pepsi Pakistan launched a campaign to help lighten up Pakistan. The #LightingUpLives campaign as it came to be known became extremely popular and managed to help millions of people across the country. The initiative targets a wide audience in a youthful and emotional way by showing how simple it is for them to help and connect with fellow citizens in remotes parts of the country where many do not

have access to the electricity. So this year Pepsi Pakistan once more took the #LightingUpLives campaign live. Hoping that once more the campaign will be as successful as it was last year in changing lives for the better, Pepsi will be donating Rs.1 for every bottle purchased to the Liter of Light. The ‘Lighting Up Lives’ project, launched in 2014, is PepsiCo Pakistan’s flagship CSR program which provides solar lights inside Pepsi bottles to communities in need. This initiative has helped install hundreds of lights in refugee camps and other under privileged areas across Pakistan impacting the lives of thousands of community members. PepsiCo aims to increase the project’s reach and light up hundreds of thousands of Pakistani lives in years to come.

The Leading Corporate & Youth Magazine of Pakistan

By: Kashmal Imran A lot of people in our surroundings try to be hyper-beneficial. You know the general population who rush from assignment to undertaking, continually checking email, sorting out something, making a call, running an errand, and so on. The general population who do this frequently subscribe to the possibility that "staying occupied" means you're buckling down and will be more fruitful. While this conviction might be consistent with a degree, it regularly prompts careless "efficiency" a steady need to accomplish something and an inclination to waste time on modest undertakings. Rather than carrying on along these lines, I do things other way. Working Smarter, Not Harder!

ly, so why not? Take it from a recovering chronic procrastinator it’s so much nicer and less stressful to get an earlier start on something. It isn’t that difficult either, if you just decide firmly to do it.

Rather than being robotic by the way I come close to actions, I attempt to be keen and dependably inquire as to whether something should be possible all the more effectively or disposed of through and through.

SET DOWN A TIME LIMIT IN WHICH TO COMPLETE TASK. Instead of just sitting down to work on a project and thinking, “I’m going to be here until this is done,” try thinking, “I’m going to work on this for three hours”. The time constraint will push you to focus and be more efficient, even if you end up having to go back and add a bit more later.

Nothing else should exist. Immerse yourself in it. GET AN EARLY START. Nearly all of us are plagued by the impulse to procrastinate. It seems so easy, and you always manage to get it done eventual-

Dealing with my time isn't about crushing whatever number responsibilities into my day as could reasonably be expected. It's about rearranging how I function, doing things quicker, and assuaging stress. It's about cleaning up space in my life to set aside a few minutes for individuals, play, and rest. I guarantee you there truly are sufficient hours in a day for all that you'd like to do, however it might take a touch of revamping and rethinking to discover them.

BE CAREFUL OF AMOUNT OF TV/INTERNET/GAMING TIME. Time spent browsing Twitter or gaming or watching TV and movies can be one of the biggest drains on productivity.I suggest becoming more aware of how much time you spend on these activities. Simply by noticing how they’re sucking up your time you’ll begin to do them less.

DO SOMETHING DURING WAITING TIME. We tend to have a lot of down-time where we don’t try to do much. Waiting rooms, lines at the store, time on the subway, on the elliptical at the gym, etc. Find things to do during this time. I tend to have a lot of reading for classes, so I bring some of it almost everywhere I go and read during waiting time. LOCK YOURSELF IN. No distractions, no excuses. Sometimes, the only way I’m going to get something done is if I’m under lock and key, alone in a room. If you’re like me, realize it, and act accordingly.

SAMI UR REHMAN - CEO

BM: What changes have you perceived in this field since the time you have begun your career in it? SR: The time I began my career was better as things would be available within the budget and our commission would be worth counting, hence the purchasing power then was very productive and profitable. Nowadays, expenses have risen so much that the purchasing power of the customer has nearly died, even customers coming from DHA ask for the most minimum rates possible, this has led to less profit with greater expense. The middle class man is not found to be a customer anymore. BM: When did you start off with your own business venture? SR: After working at Jubilee State Life for three years, I alongside my brother started off with our very own business venture by the name of Rehman Enterprises at Zamzama. Then in 1996, I eventually took a start with State Bank at, DHA, which I proudly own today! My projects are mainly dealt within DHA Karaci, whereas, Bahria is just a side project where I take part in – day in day out.

BM: Looking at the current political situation, how does it affect your business? SR: There was a time when property would be considered fragile, with an indirect relation with the stock market, being easily affected by the political situations of the country. Today, things have changed; the economy is now so much focused on his own living that the political disputes no longer hold a power against his will. The economy is now more concerned in making money rather than the ongoing political disputes between politicians and our national leaders. BM: Where do you see the business of real estate marketing in the next 5 years? SR: As I said earlier that as time is going by the purchasing power from the customer if diminishing gradually, and this shall go on with the current situation in the market, however it may only change with some drastic change in the system, the economy and the budgets of the nation. As far as my prediction is concerned, I believe that the market will not be going down anytime soon in the long run. BM: What message would you like to give to the upcoming business generation of Pakistan? SR: Firstly, complete your education as it will help you in every step you take to grow further in the world of business. Making money should never be your aim, anyone can make money with whatsoever measure taken, but with education you know the difference between good and bad, and then once you avail that knowledge nothing will come in your way of success. Stay motivated and firm with your belief in your work and success will follow you in every step you take! BM: What new ventures are you deciding to come up with? SR: For some time now I have been deciding to come forward with CSR Activities for the betterment of the country. In this regard we initiated a trust a decade ago, by the name of Al Rehman International Trust, which we began in Hazara colony with a general OPD. Around 100 -150 patients are treated there on a daily basis with free treatments and medical services. We have now extended this project to Shahra-e-Faisal, hoping to contribute the most in the welfare of the society.

BM: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you entered this profession. SR: I have completed by bachelors in commerce. I started off in 1986. My elder brother belonged to this field, he motivated me and gave me a go ahead in entering this field of business. I am a self-made business man and whatever a man does, is a need for his better livelihood, hence I entered with the thought to establish a productive company which would create a bright future for me and my family. I started off at PECHS, so I would get people into buying or renting houses and would avail commission from it. I worked this way for at least 2 years and then properly initiated my career in 1988. However, due to Zia ul Haq’s plane crash incident the market had gone through a massive downfall which was a very difficult time for the business men to run their companies. Hence, at that time I would basically earn more through providing tuition than by the newly set career I stepped into. However, I believe that starting off with such circumstances made me learn the time of downfall before reaching the heights I enjoy today.

DEMAND OF BEAUTY IN OUR SOCIETY By: Yeshal Burney

“BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER”. That’s the saying we grew up learning but now it has something else to say. People are objectified and are judged by their looks, body shape, skin color, what they are wearing, what brand it is and etc. I personally don’t believe that all this is to be blamed on the fashion industry. They only demonstrate what our society and people desire. Every time someone enters, every eye will stare him/her from top to bottom and judge them based on their looks and beauty which is not acceptable. This kind of behavior is melted into our minds that instinctively without even thinking we just make up our mind about people which is based on stereotypes. Whenever a person has an interview, they don’t think about their potential or skills. They just get up and dress up clean, because in our society people just concentrate whether the person is presentable instead of his capability or expertise, it might be any platform; they need a beautiful face to lead or to represent the brand of a company. Talking about the world here would be a little broad, so let’s first talk about our country Pakistan, where you know you can get an “A” if you are beautiful, handsome and bold. Being bold and beautiful can never justify the hard work of others that is being neglected.

40 BRANDS

Beauty over the years have changed dramatically, what people found beautiful in the 19th century would not be considered as beautiful now in the present day, the standard

of beauty changes a lot. Looking at business, whenever any promotional activity (BTL) of a company is planned and executed there is always a person on a respectable post asking for a brand ambassador to be beautiful which means that they should have pretty faces but without any educational background or sense of work. This standard of beauty is damaging us far more than we think; it’s not just clothes and the sense of style. The new generation is trying so hard to fit in this absurd lifestyle and is continuously hurting themselves while doing it. Those who don’t fit into it are “ugly” and are being bullied and that leaves an imprint on them for their whole life, teen age girls are trying to starve their selves to get their “perfect body”, while others are just scared for life and attempt suicide.

“THE BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS IN THE WORLD CANNOT BE SEEN OR EVEN TOUCHED - THEY MUST BE FELT WITH THE HEART.” - HELEN KELLER We should change their perspective on life, teaching our children to live a healthy life from the start. Our society should promote the positivity of being different and unique and boost up their confidence to feel good in their own body and skin. Trends can change every other month, but your body that you live in is the same. Don’t mold yourself how the society wants you to be, be an example and make them want you.

“ADD SOME SALT INTO THE REAL ESTATE”

By: Monaiza Azam For over thousands of years women are known as the time walkers; whether it comes to their household or business cycle, they know how to manage the time to the responsibility by indulging humor, carrying out an unbiased and rational self analysis, and giving something praiseworthy.

place to find women in real estate/property structure, inducing boldface men to the man's words, all you will find in “The End of the Suburbs: Where the American Dream is Moving”.

Business women are slightly different, they channel their negativity and manipulative feminine nature into something positive, i.e. high gain in business, high ratios of profit and the sensible decision making. One more thing makes them different and that is their career orientation, goal oriented striving personality, and a strong will to dominate on the basis of something which they earn themselves without being a liability on their partners or demand an unjustly undue favor. If we talk about real estate we find the most dominating women throughout the international market.

INSECURITY VS COMPETITION

By: Yumna Tirmizi

Everyone feels insecure from time to time, perhaps particularly in certain situations. You may feel that you’re not as attractive, intelligent, or well-situated in life as you could be. Comparing yourself to the people around you can make you feel even worse. Due to such insecurities some people try to show that they’re better than others. They sometimes brag about their achievements, remind others about their successes even if others are well aware of their success. This insecurity normally happens in a workplace. You found a new job and as you arrive on your first day, eager and excited to start work. All of your new coworkers step forward and shake hands, but there is that one person who is not that welcoming, the expression on that person is a bit odd. If you can catch those vibes right away consider yourself lucky. Sometimes, insecurity is directly linked to the field you work in and the characters it attracts. The worst thing you can do is make insecure colleagues feel even more nervous. Praise them when you can. People who lack confidence in themselves and in their performance need support and acknowledgement. One of the best ways to encourage them is by offering help in your area of proficiency and then asking for help from them in areas in which they shine, make sure to recognize them for any work well done. The recognition can either be private or public, and it doesn't have to be ostentatious, by even simply mentioning your appreciation for their contribution can go a long way. There are hundreds of emotional and psychological issues that can cause a person to feel insecure. People have different levels of insecurity. They can be fine in one area of their lives, yet very frightened and worried about loss in another area. That is one of the reasons why so many people are trying to earn a living online just to escape the difficulties of dealing with workplace toxicity. The best way to act around an insecure coworker is to maintain a polite, respectful professionalism at all times. Working with men can be easier because they are not as expressively complex as women and are able to air out a perceived threat verbally which clears the air so everybody can move on to the job at hand.

46 BRANDS

An insecure female coworker, on the other hand can be a nightmare. Because women are more emotionally complex, their insecurities can come out in various ways like spreading rumors, gossiping, dirty looks and so on. So it’s better to take it as a competition rather than feeling insecure. Now it’s up to you if you want to continue feeling insecure go ahead but in the end you’re going to suffer. So the best way is to feel competitive. And let’s face it a healthy competition is very much important in every workplace, in this way you’ll work as a team and will take your company to the next level.

Growing up in such an environment where cruelty is one of the factors which lead to evilness as people are eagerly neglect or abuse, talk about those purely emotional factors. Evil is neither a capacity nor some kind of bonus but rather our environments influence us that creates bashfulness which beg empathy apart from environment in the face of fear, competition, jealousy, where in return we turn to destroy, hurt and harm people.

Are we genetically inclined towards evil behaviors like selfishness, cruelty or violence or it’s just an unfortunate impact of our society? So what gives? Why people get stinking mean at times? Hundreds of years before Freud, Philosopher Thomas Hobbes had a similar pessimistic view of humanity. He wrote that the life of man in his natural state is solitary, poor and rubbish. He believed all men were equally capable of killing, and when two people want the same thing the inevitable outcome is war. Evil is defined as an intention or forethought. It is that aspect of our mind which makes us do something which we don’t tend to do but end up doing it due to hate, jealousy and rage. All of humanity is evil in different varying degrees as we are born with it or at least with the potential while we are also born with the potential for good. If you look at people committing anti-social acts and hurting people they are the strong

Nature also tends to be competitive; having enough may not be good to fulfill our worldly desires. They are some good people and they are some bad people but I don’t think we are naturally evil. Good or evil come out of every human being differently, ethics is not constant. It differs from society to society and person to person. Society has a rule and every person tends to follow it differently. So are human beings evil by nature? I don’t think so, nor can they be good by nature, for neither good nor evil exist. Human beings nature is to survive. We are the one we have been waiting for, we are all we need. The intuitions on these conflicts give us a chance to look over our problems and use it as the key to a great deal of the problems of life. I believe we have to try to understand life and get a grip on many faces of life.

HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH IRRATIONAL, ANGRY OR CRAZY PEOPLE? By: Yumna Tirmizi There comes a point in life when you have to deal with angry, irrational or crazy people. We all have faced such people in life. There’s this one person in every group who is either angry every time or is crazy. If you haven’t met a person with any of these qualities, then worry not, soon you’ll face someone with one of these qualities. Now the question is how to deal with such people? First of all, you can’t get angry too. Because then there are two angry people arguing. Instead tell yourself that an angry person is just having a bad day and that it’s not about you can help take the bite out of their rage. Angry people often simply need an outlet for their pain. They want to be heard and acknowledged. They want others to know how they’ve been wounded, mistreated, or misunderstood. Sometimes all you need to say is, “I see you are very angry about this. I can tell you are really upset.” This acknowledgement may release another gush of anger, and this is a call for you to simply say, “I hear you.” The angry person may be frustrated that you’re not engaging in an argument to their reactive behavior. At this point, simply tell them you’ll be ready to hear them fully and discuss the situation once they are able to have a calm conversation. Then give them the space to cool off. This allows you to maintain control of your emotions while not further inflaming the other person.

50 BRANDS

And if they’re being crazy, you’ll want them to shut them up or talk over. But don’t do that. It’s a natural reaction but it doesn’t work. They don’t think they’re wrong. They’ll just interpret it as a status game where you’re trying to win. Stop being so sure you’re right and listen. And just shutting up is not enough. Instead just listen. It’s letting the other person know you’re

listening. Don’t judge or analyze what the person is saying at first. Just focus on trying to understand their perspective. You may have to deal with someone who does this on a regular basis. What’s important to remember is you need to ignore the anger and fits. Don’t reward them. Give positive reinforcement only when they calm down. Learning to deal with irrational people is particularly an important skill for entrepreneurs and leaders. While managing such behavior isn’t easy, it can be done and when it comes to dealing with difficult personalities and irrational behavior, three simple lessons stand out. First and foremost, it’s important to stop and recognize that everyone, including yourself, can act irrational and crazy at times. The reality is that there are many factors that influence our behavior in stressed situations. Personal issues, private stresses, and unseen anxieties influence our behavior, for better or worse. The most important step to successfully manage someone acting irrationally is to start with empathy. Begin by recognizing the other person’s feelings as valid, without disregarding or commenting on them. The last thing that an irrational person wants to hear is that their beliefs or emotions are wrong. They may be misguided and literally incorrect, but they’re still very real to the person experiencing them. Interactions take a turn for the worse when you push back on an irrational person, causing them to double down on their position and fight back. These are the tips which can be used when you are communicating with angry, irrational and crazy people. It’s not like every person is angry, irrational or crazy, there comes a time in life when you need to say things out loud and want someone to support you when you’re having a bad day. So be that someone.

REDESIGNING WITH A PURPOSE IN MIND years to help brands instantly digest packaging’s huge role in their image, identification, differentiation and customer satisfaction. These changes meant that it was time for our own brand mark to better reflect our stance. So,BRANDPACKAGING’s new logo highlights the strong emphasis we place on brand By: Isra Shams strategy in approaching packaging design. A fresh font choice for our name and a switch to sans serif treatment for our tagline completes the look. Here are some points that we kept in mind during the redesign that will help make a redesign of your own successful:

We’re so constantly bombarded with stimuli that our brains are built to weed out all but the most urgent of incoming material. So for the first issue in our third decade of publishing, we decided to shake things up: Our brand mark’s design, while attractive, hasn’t matched our messaging, and it was time to set that straight. Our focus, while always and forever “branding through packaging,” has gone through small evolutions throughout the years. Eight years ago, our previous brand mark was rolled out: the design element of the caret in place of BRANDPACKAGING’s “A.” It fit well with our tagline: “Elevating Packaging in the Marketing Mix.” As packaging started to get the attention it deserved from the CPG industry, we turned to a summary phrase of “Where Design and Strategy Meet” to clarify that there’s more to great brand packaging than good graphics. Yes, the graphical role in packaging is immense, but functionality and structure are just as important in communicating a brand’s position to its intended audience.

52 BRANDS

This led to the all-encompassing “What Does Your Package Say about Your Brand?” we’ve been using for the past few

Challenge current choices: Does your design and copy still fit your mission? Is an element present just because it has always been? Reconsider everything. Figure out and keep your brand equities, but know the rest can be reassessed and changed. Keep some familiar elements: When designing a dramatic departure, it is important to retain some commonalities or you need a very clear way to alert customers how to find their favorite product. You don’t want to alienate your current customers in an attempt to get new ones. Be true to your brand: You’re unconventional? Cool, stay that way. You have a more traditional story? Don’t be pressured to change your style to fit a current trend. Let your brand personality show through it’s so much more powerful than doing whatever works for the major brand of the moment that everyone else is rushing to copy. Show people what you stand for: People buy products that fit who they are and want to be. Help your customers decide if you are the right brand for them through your packaging. We hope our new look shows you our dedication to bringing you attractive, inspiring brand packaging and other creative content that helps you better reach your customers. Enjoy!

MARIAM ASIF

Brand Manager

“A WOMAN CARRIES HER CLOTHES, BUT IT’S A SHOE THAT CARRIES A WOMAN.”

BM: Tell us about your educational and professional journey? MA: I was born and brought up in Lahore. My father was in the army, he moved around a lot for work but my mom made sure we stayed put so our studies never got affected. I completed my entire schooling from Lahore Grammar School including my O’level and A’level. Following that I pursued my bachelors, a BBA program with double majors in Marketing and Finance from the Lahore School of Economics. While in my 3rd year of bachelors a friend of mine told me of an opportunity to work on television as a TV show host since I loved public speaking and presenting. I auditioned and got the part out of some 100 people, I considered myself real lucky. It was a huge deal back then. My contract ended after a year and I was close to graduating. After that I pursued my MBA with majors in Marketing also from the Lahore School of Economics and upon graduating I began my corporate journey since I got a couple of good opportunities my way through my placement office. I started out as Deputy Manager Marketing & Sales with a renowned cement company i.e. Kohinoor Maple Leaf Group (KMLG). From thereon it has been a blur, some instinctive decisions and some reflex reactions and finally here I am today.

BM: What has been the defining point in your life? MA: The defining point in my life has been every moment I have made my family proud. I still remember the day I got my first pay cheque back when I used to work in the media during my university years. 50k was a big amount then. That feeling you get from hard earned income is just not comparable. I take pride in being from a self-made family. I encourage everyone to earn and deserve what they have. My travel experiences both local and international, have also been defining moments for me, travel always gets me thinking and reflecting on my life, what I’ve achieved, what I want, where I see myself heading, the future. I’m a thinker, I think a lot. BM: What is the most exciting thing about your job? MA: There isn’t much that doesn’t excite me about my job, but what really delights me is the fact that I can experiment and that my brand is social and helps me interact with tons of people. The brand is young, it’s premium, it’s hip, it’s refreshing and that’s why I look forward to each day I put into it. BM: Does your brand possess values that it shares with its customers? MA: Absolutely. At Insignia, our core values are: Consistent quality, integrity, longevity and most importantly compassion-feeling for others. This is what our customers value and we bring it to them.

BM: How do you ensure the quality of your brand’s product? MA: We are SATRA Global Methods Compliant which encompasses around 300 plus different quality assurance checks for shoes and is a practice in the shoe industry. BM: What features and quality standards set Insignia apart from its competitors in the market? MA: You may have heard of “Beauty is pain and fashion knows not of comfort”. It’s very tricky for women to find a good pair of shoes that feels as good to the feet as much as it appeals to the eyes. Our shoes are comfortable yet trendy which is a definite USP, in fact we have an entire comfort range. We’re importing from Brazil. We also make sure we stay abreast of market trends. Block heels, metallics and prints are very in these days in the shoe scenario and we have all of it. Customers often say that “You always find that perfect Gold Stiletto at Insignia.” What our customer loves is ofcourse a point of differentiation from competition. We have extensive quality check mechanisms whereby import orders all have to go through size measurement checks, cleanliness checks, damage proofing checks, weight checks, heels strength and height checks, abrasion checks, rubber sole checks and specification checks. This I feel also sets us apart from other brands. BM: What is the motto behind your brand? MA: The motto behind the brand is very simple; “To offer shoes that are synonymous with a woman’s personality. A woman should view Insignia shoes as an asset in her wardrobe. You may have heard that famous Christian Louboutin quote: A woman carries her clothes, but it’s a shoe that carries a woman.” Shoes can make or break a look. BM: What challenges do you face with regards to quality assurance and market shareholding? MA: When we try to assure 100% quality, a lot of hard work goes into it. There are larger batch sizes, vendor premises are visited to see the making processes and to pass that premium, additional costs are also incurred. Import duties are also a challenge. As far as market shareholding goes, there are low barriers to entry in the shoe market so competition keeps increasing. International brands keep entering the Pakistani market which can be challenging. BM: There is a vast range of products that are available within Insignia. What new ventures are there to be seen? MA: Yes, variety has developed into our strength over a short period of time. We always try to have all categories of shoes for women in our stores with seasonal relevance, be it flats, sandals, pumps, moccasins, espadrilles, wedges, heels, peep toes, stilettos, court shoes, block heels and boots. In the long-run we would like to venture into high-end fashion accessories or a complement category. We are also looking to increase our national footprint. Let’s wait and see how that works out. BM: Lastly, what is your own personal style in terms of clothes, accessories and so on? Your favorite type of shoe? MA: My personal style is a blend of contemporary and classic comfortable clothing, my favorite brands are Next, Mango and H&M. I follow latest trends but I don’t let them dictate what I wear. I absolutely love vintage chunky jewelry like cocktail and two-finger rings, I’m a collector, a quirky pendant and a good watch to keep time. A satchel bag or saddle purse serves me well. My favorite pair of shoes is a patent leather Stiletto.

BM: How did you come to join Insignia. Tell us about your success story? MA: I was working at Service Industries Limited for their recent venture ShoeBox and was looking after Marketing solely and I heard of the opportunity. It stayed with me because since the inception of Insignia I’ve been buying their shoes. It’s a brand I was fond of because I always found a pair of good shoes there for myself. I don’t believe in working for brands I haven’t had or wouldn’t want a user experience with, the oneness with the brand doesn’t come that way. So based on my affiliation with the brand and having spent a good productive 2 years at Service Industries, I decided to consider the opportunity and as God would have it, I got the position. I love fashion and Insignia is a fashionable shoe brand dedicated to women. I’m ambitious, I always have been and because of this drive to achieve, I viewed it as a chance to excel my career doing something I love.

BM: What is a good descriptor for Insignia shoes? MA: Glamourous.

To the cheers – and even tears – of 50,000 home fans, Japanese pilot Yoshihide “Yoshi” Muroya broke through the clouds over Toyko Bay for a breakthrough of his own: his first race win in five seasons of competition for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship. As the only Asian pilot of the ultimate motorsport series in the sky, Muroya showed why his countrymen call him “Eternal Pioneer,” logging a historic first for Japan and the entire continent as well. The victory on June 5th was a nail-biter right to the last fraction of a second. Muroya’s time of 1:04.992 barely edged out the 1:05.097 clocked by Martin Šonka of the Czech Republic. Kirby Chambliss of the USA finished a fiercely competitive third. “It feels very special. We were very close to Martin in the times, but the fans pushed us into the win,” said Muroya, who noted that his Team Falken is working together exceptionally well. “I’ve been flying for 25 years and this is my first win, so it’s taken a long time. It's a big, big moment.” The next stop of Red Bull Air Race will take place in the scenic heart of Budapest, Hungary on 16-17July, 2016. www.redbullairrace.com

THE BEST WAY TO GET A MENTOR IS TO NEVER ASK FOR ONE

By: Isra Shams Imagine this: you are busy at work and you are doing a great job. Out of the blue, you get an email from someone you have never met, asking for a long-term relationship with you. How do you respond? Flattery aside, most people would probably find this a bit weird and either click delete or politely decline. It may sound odd, but this is the situation that occurs all too often when people approach a potential mentor. Asking someone you have never met to be your mentor without defining what you want to learn, why you think you can learn it from them and how much of their time you require, is a common and unsuccessful approach to establishing a mentor relationship, which is a real shame given how strongly linked mentoring is to career success. A research study published in The Journal of Psychology found that people who are mentored receive higher levels of compensation, more promotions and enjoy higher job satisfaction. With this in mind, it might seem counter-intuitive for me to advise that the best way to get a mentor is to never actually ask for one. To prevent people hitting delete when they receive that mentor relationship request, you need to change how you approach the relationship from the outset. Here are my three steps to building successful mentor relationships. 1. GIVE AND GAIN Be clear about what you have to offer a mentor relationship and what you are looking to gain. People often approach a mentor with a vague request for their time. Think about what you want to learn to help your career in the next 12 to 18 months. Then think about what you could offer in return. Have you got specialist knowledge or skills? Could you help them to organise an event? Could you connect them to someone who could help them? A direct trade of your skills for their experience is not required, however it can open doors. This worked very well for someone in my team, who offered her expertise in online marketing to improve her mentor’s website and in return received a commitment of their time to help her development.

60 BRANDS

2. MATCH NEEDS AND SKILLS Once you know what you are looking to gain, identify five

people who you think have got the relevant experience to help you. Many people just ask for mentors because of their seniority or status, in the hope that it will advance their position. This is a transparent approach that rarely leads to additive mentor relationships. Instead, articulate to someone exactly why you think they could help your development. You could say: “I really admire the way you have been able to run your business alongside your job. I have been developing my own enterprise and am now thinking about how to grow it. I would find it extremely helpful to spend 30 minutes with you to benefit from your experience.” This is a much more considered and authentic approach for the individual on the receiving end. 3. JUST MEET ONCE A successful mentor relationship relies a lot upon the dynamic between mentor and mentee. The reality is that as brilliant as someone might seem, if you don’t have the same impression when you meet them, it is unlikely to be a great career development exercise for you. If you have already created a multiple-meeting expectation up front, it can be difficult to get out of. In my early career, I was ‘gifted’ a mentor through a university program. It was a bad match and I had to sit through three months of meetings before I felt able to extract myself. A better solution is to ask for one meeting. During the meeting, you can see whether your own expectations of the value of their experience match up. If you find it valuable, the likelihood is that they enjoyed the session too and you’re on good ground to ask for a follow-up meeting. Once you have gone through these three steps, you need to keep the relationship going by letting your mentor know how you are implementing the learning and advice you gleaned and also make sure you have a few different mentors you can go to. Mentors can be valuable to your career, and with a bit of effort in how you cultivate them, you can create a relationship that develops alongside your own growth.
