In 2012 the BRANDT Team fulfilled the promise of continuing the BRANDT Community Trials. The goal of the BRANDT Community Trials is to provide the customer with replicated local data for seed selection. The number of trials planted in 2012 remained at 24 different locations throughout central Illinois. The hybrid sets differ slightly in the northern trials vs. the southern trials. The hybrid sets are varied to allow for a wider look at different maturities. The BRANDT Team consulted with representatives from the four brands we represent in choosing the latest genetics to evaluate. The four brands we represent are DeKalb, Croplan, Lewis, and NK. We also added hybrids from two popular competitors to compare with the leading products in the BRANDT portfolio. We believe this is an excellent way to evaluate hybrids at multiple sites with varying conditions.

cooperators for the 2012 Trials.
On the following pages the BRANDT Team has provided you the results of these trials in graph form for easier comparisons. Included in the graphs are yield, income, cropping information, rainfall history, and a few comments about each specific location. The corn price used in calculating income was $8.00 per bushel. The weather challenged us in different ways in 2012. Hail, heat, and wind reduced our reportable plots numbers to 19 out of 24. This is an increase of two over 2011. With 19 trials, we feel this is a great tool to assist you in planning for 2013.

The location of this plot is south of Virginia off of the Virginia/ Arenzville blacktop. This is the second year that Ron Brockhouse has been the cooperator of this plot. The plot was planted on April 9 and got off to a good start. With the good emergence and stands we had, the potential for a excellent crop was the best we have had in several years. However, lack of moisture became the most limiting factor as most growers experienced this year. The plot had approximately three inches of rain total during the growing season. That being said, the yields were better than expected.

This corn after soybeans plot was planted in good conditions and stayed pretty uniform throughout the summer. There was a July wind event that tested a few of the standability ratings, but nothing that affected yield. This a good piece of real estate for plot work.

This plot planted well, came up great, and looked like a million bucks until May 18. A major storm rolled through with large hail and a four inch rain. It made me sick to my stomach. We decided to leave it alone and see if the corn would grow out of it. Today’s corn hybrids are truly amazing. Great fertility and fungicide don’t hurt either.

The community trial at Bill Carter’s farm was planted on April 6. Please notice that the NK 70J was not planted until five days after the rest of the plot. This plot was located on Rte. 29, a half mile east of Athens. This area had timely rains in the July heat which lead to the good yield results. The plot averaged over 180 bushels!

The Greenview Wood Community Trial was planted on April 11. This plot was located four miles south of Greenview on Rte. 29. The plot was not sprayed with fungicide. The rainfall amount at this location was not as abundant as the Greenview Carter plot near Athens. The one thing to take from this plot is that it was very consistent. This plot averaged 146 bushels.

Randy Bruns was one of the cooperators for a community trial at the Lincoln location. This corn on corn plot was planted on April 10. The location of this plot was three miles north of the Lincoln plant on County Road 600E. For the lack of rainfall at this plot, the yields were better than expected. The plot averaged 135 bushels.

Rod and Jim White were the other cooperators for a community trial at Lincoln This corn after soybean plot was located a half mile south of the Lincoln plant on County Road 600E. The planting date on this plot was April 10. This plot was under stress due to the lack of rainfall just like the Bruns plot. The yields were consistent even though stress was high. We planted this plot on April 4 and we were second guessing ourselves the whole time. This was a field that would hold water during the last three years and we were worried about a flood. The numbers show that we got lucky for once.

This plot was planted into a nice seedbed just before an April rain. This was an area south of Pawnee that did not catch much rain and the hybrids showed it early and often. It is amazing how much corn we made at this location. Solid fertility underneath wins again.

Bruce and Nick Constant were the cooperators for the Williamsville community trial. This plot was located one mile east of Williamsville on East Main St. The rainfall was very minimal at this location for most of the growing season. This plot was planted on April 9 into very dry soil conditions which related to the low erratic yields. The plot average was 109 bushels.

The Cooksville Community Hybrid Trial was located on the Lexington-Leroy blacktop between Lexington and Cooksville. Ron Brucker was the cooperator for the trial. This was our last planted corn plot in the northern region. With the lack of rainfall early in the growing season, plant health was still good. The plot received some beneficial rains in late July, and yields reflect that.

The Cropsey Community Seed Trial was located on Rte. 47 between Sibley and Gibson City. Reum Bros. were the cooperators for this trial. Unfortunately, this plot was in a very stressful area. The plot was side dressed with 28% in late May, received BRANDT Smart Trio® and PROLEC® G with glyphosate, and had an application of fungicide with N-Boron®, but yields were compromised with the lack of rainfall throughout the growing season.

This is the most northern plot we have, it was strip tilled and also side dressed with 28%. This location got better the farther east we went from a yield standpoint. This location was sprayed with insecticide and fungicide with a ground unit. The GDU’s really helped the later planted and later maturing hybrids.

This plot was located on Route 116, just one mile west of I 39. It was planted on April 21 and looked really good all year long. All of the nitrogen that was applied was side dressed. The results in this plot surprised us. The plot was sprayed by BRANDT for fungicide and insecticide because Japanese beetle pressure was very high.

The Fairbury plot was located on Route 24 west of Fairbury. Dennis Wenger was the grower who hosted this site. It was the first plot we planted in the BRANDT North geography. It was along the Route 24 desert and did better than what we expected in July and August. This site was also under high management, but we realized weather was the limiting factor.

This plot was located between Gridley and Flanagan on the blacktop, it was sprayed with BRANDT Smart Trio® at V5, and also N-Boron® at tasseling time. Insecticide was also added as Japanese and rootworm beetle counts were very high. This location was one of the most consistent plots from one end to the other.

This plot was located south and west of Gridley. It turned out hot and dry along Route 24 and this high managed plot really suffered the effects. Gridley Manager Bill Roth stated, “This plot was in the heart of the desert, and I am very surprised it made what it did. The high management practices used in this plot really helped with the high temps and low rainfall.”

JACOB JONES
Bob and Mike Fish were the cooperators for the Towanda Community Seed Trial, located just three miles east of Towanda. This is a highly productive farm that received some very timely rains throughout the growing season which is reflected in the results. This plot also received an aerial application of ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate. At harvest time, plant health and stand were excellent, with the exception of Pioneer 1319 dropping some ears.

The graph on these two pages is the average of all 19 trials presented in the book. Lewis hybrids were only presented in the South trials because of the different yield environments from North to South. Including Lewis would have skewed the data. The question I would be asking myself as a grower is how do I use 2012 data to make a decision for 2013 hybrid selection? The results of 2012 demonstrate which hybrids have the ability to perform in a stressful environment. The strength of the BRANDT Community Trials is demonstrated by the fact that 5 out of 19 trials were in a high yield environment. Rainfall charts are included for each trial. What a difference a properly timed rain can make! This data should assist you in evaluating hybrids that can perform in both yield environments. The DeKalb and Croplan brands performed very consistently from north to south. Risk mitigation is key component to success in today’s economic environment. Thanks to all cooperators. Without their help this project would not be successful. I would also like to thank all the BRANDT personnel who assisted with the trials.
