Here are some tried and true tips from our educators to help you keep your children engaged, interested, and learning.

Just like adults, students need a place to work. Find a quiet place away from distractions. Younger students need a place close to adults who will be monitoring them. Older students can be more independent. Each student should have a desk or table. Make sure they have a good upright chair available. Because students will be meeting classmates and teachers on computer meetings, they should be facing any windows or light sources. Light shining from behind them makes it hard for others online to see them. Gather supplies like chargers, pens, pencils, notebooks, sticky notes, files, and planners to keep near the workstation.

Set your child up for success

Large worktable with good light.

No desk leads to bad posture, creating a sore neck and fatigue.

Well organized space facing the window.

A bed may be comfy, but it is not a great place for learning with others.

Set a schedule Children thrive when they know what will happen next. Set a good schedule and stick to it to help keep your child focused and ready to learn. Think about your family’s schedule and the schedule set by BSD. Make sure your child’s day includes time for physical activity and helping around the house. Try to keep to the schedule as much as possible during the week.

Check Schoology and Home Access Center. Schoology is where your child’s learning is happening. The Home Access Center is the best place to check your child’s grades. Be familiar with both systems and check to see what and how they are doing in class. Stay in contact with your child’s teacher. Check in to let them know how things are going on your end. Ask your child to explain their work to you or another family member. It’s a great way for kids to practice their skills and it gives you an idea of how they are doing.

Help your Child Stay on Track

Navigate stress and emotions

All Feelings are OK. Students will start each day with a short lesson about social-emotional learning. Remind your child that anything they are feeling is ok. Help them check in with their feelings and express them. Listen carefully! Remind your child that there are a lot of kids and adults feeling the same way right now. Let your child see you taking time for self care. This shows them how to find something that helps them manage their emotions too.

Spend time: Sometimes the best reward is time spent with you. Even a few minutes reading together can go a long way to ease stress and relax a worried mind.

Let’s work together! BSD is working hard to make sure that each of our students is as successful as possible. We are committed to work with you to make the 2020-2021 school year your child’s best yet!
