2022–23 Donor and Giving Report

“As the parents of a recent Branksome grad, my wife Irene and I are delighted to support the Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST), focused on the young women leaders of tomorrow. We know that giving to boys’ schools is about four times that of giving to girls’ schools per capita. As the parents of both a boy and a girl, we never felt our daughter was worth a quarter of our son. It’s time to put girls first, from our school and beyond, right here in the heart of Toronto.”

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND CHAIR

2022–23 BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Being a leader means having bold aspirations. The Make Way Campaign is the most ambitious in Branksome Hall’s 120-year history. “Make Way” aptly describes our way forward on many fronts as we enter a new era of transformative change that will impact the learning experience for every student at Branksome.

Our school’s strategy, refreshed last year, captures this transformation. It also reflects our ongoing vision: To be the pre-eminent educational community of globally minded learners and leaders. Branksome Hall is poised to thrive in today’s exciting and complex context with a roadmap guided by our traditions of IB academic excellence, driven by leadership in innovation, arts and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Our strategy also emphasizes an integrated approach to best-in-class learning, global engagement and well-being. We’re excited and proud of the school-wide philanthropic momentum we experienced in 2022–23, including unprecedented generosity of close to $8 million—from our current and past community of parents and grandparents, as well as from our alums who “Keep Well the Road” as mentors, inspiring and trailblazing paths for our current students. Thanks to you, our Branksome community, we also raised more than $22 million over the past four years towards the total $30-million goal for our Make Way Campaign, launched publicly in September 2023.

6

Our comprehensive Make Way Campaign includes three funding pillars: $25 million is directed to the Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST); $3 million is for Financial Assistance; and $2 million goes toward the Opportunity Fund, to support emerging student programming.

With so many worthy causes and organizations competing for support, we’re profoundly grateful to the hundreds of community members who champion our school and students’ success! Thank you! We believe Branksome’s future has never been brighter.

We’re focused on preparing our students to flourish in tomorrow’s workplaces. In these pages, you’ll read impactful testimonials from experts in technology, artificial intelligence, the arts and entrepreneurship who are powerful advocates for iCAST. We also highlight how our community has stepped up in an unprecedented way to support this project, and you’ll meet our Campaign Cabinet, the senior leadership group behind the Make Way Campaign. You’ll also read about the tremendous impact of your donations on every part of our students’ experience, including elevated facilities such as new tennis courts and refurbishments to our music and science classrooms. You’ll discover the impact of the $1.5 million in financial assistance, distributed to 10 per cent of our Grades 7–12 students, unlocking opportunity, enriching learning and much more.

WHAT IS iCAST?

MAKE WAY CAMPAIGN:

GIVING SNAPSHOT

Great things happen when learning goes off-script and traditional classroom dialogue is rewritten. Branksome has prioritized innovation and entrepreneurship to address the exponential increase of STEM jobs, the economic demand for key entrepreneurial skills and the gender gap that exists in both these areas. At the heart of this key priority will be the new Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST), scheduled to open in 2025. This 32,000-square-foot facility is the first space of its kind at the JK–Grade 12 level in Canada where students will explore and master practical, hands-on skills in areas such as fabrication, the arts, lighting and sound, design, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, robotics and entrepreneurship. Programming will be complemented by experts and innovators in technology, AI and entrepreneurial fields. iCAST will prepare our students for the ever-evolving world of work. They will be coveted by employers and universities in Canada and across the globe.

LEADING THE WAY Michael and Julia Bratty “Our donation to support Branksome Hall’s Make Way Campaign, specifically the Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST), was inspired by a deep commitment to providing the best possible education for our children, their fellow students and future generations. By enhancing students’ access to cutting-edge teaching methods and interactive digital tools, found only at universities until now, we are hoping to help better prepare students for the digital age and future job opportunities. iCAST will further enhance the already diverse and extensive curriculum at Branksome Hall. We know iCAST will further personalize education, customized to each student’s unique learning style and pace, while promoting collaboration, teamwork and social skills. iCAST will make education more engaging and relevant to tomorrow’s world. As parents of students who will become active members of our broader community, we hope to inspire other community members to join our shared commitment to education. Our gift reflects our belief in the school’s mission and our desire to create a positive impact on the community at large.” (Catherine, Grade 7; Estella, Grade 9; Victoria, Grade 10)

MAKE WAY FOR iCAST William and Anita Chow

Tristan and Tara Armstrong

“It’s amazing to see iCAST come to life and be part of it. We see this as an opportunity to affect innovation in curriculum in real time.

“We’re proud to support this transformational project and believe iCAST and its programs will continue to propel Branksome to the forefront of girls’ education globally.

Erin participated in the Noodle business incubator program this year, and it’s so wonderful to know iCAST will be its new home.

“With iCAST as the catalyst, [students will] become creative and critical thinkers who can thrive in any career, even if those careers don’t exist today.” —Tristan and Tara Armstrong

It’s so important to encourage girls to participate and succeed in STEAM, and having a leadingedge facility at their fingertips will enables them to explore their interests and gain confidence.

In the past, conventional wisdom has dictated that students are introduced to higherlevel thinking in science, technology and entrepreneurship at later stages of development. Why wait?

iCAST is meant to be a community space, and Branksome’s location in the heart of Canada’s innovation corridor means our students will be regularly exposed to experts and mentors from business and industry— tangible examples of what they can do and how they can break barriers.

We appreciate that alums will be invited back; Lauren will have an innovative space to return to share her experiences and expertise. The whole vision of iCAST is so ambitious. It’s a safe, encouraging environment in which students can break stereotypes about what girls are naturally “good at” and prepare them to conquer anything they set their minds to.

We chose Branksome, in part, because of its focus on the innovation mindset— thinking, making mistakes and using what students have learned to solve real-world problems. With iCAST as the catalyst, [students will] become creative and critical thinkers who can thrive in any career, even if those careers don’t yet exist. We also believe strongly in the value of community.

Coming together as a community will propel iCAST into a best-in-class learning environment, not just in Canada, but in the world.” (Erin, Grade 6; Lauren, Grade 12)

As our girls benefit from prior campaigns, our contribution to iCAST pays it forward to the next generation.”

“Coming together as a community will propel iCAST into a best-in-class learning environment, not just in Canada, but in the world.”

“Branksome will be a physical and metaphorical focal point for AI and STEM, educating and inspiring girls at Branksome, and across the city and country, just like our two daughters.” —Martin Kon

“Technology touches everything, so we need to prepare the next generation to work in that environment.”

Shelby AUSTIN Cooper’99, Chief Executive Officer at Arteria AI

Eva Lau, Founding Partner, Two Small Fish Ventures

“iCAST will be critical to the future of your daughter and to the future of Canada. The world has increasingly moved to a digital-based economy and it has only just begun. Fluency in STEM skills will become a prerequisite for virtually every quality career that your daughter might be interested in.

“I was a student who shined more when the lessons had practical relevance—and iCAST puts the practical at its heart. It’s far more tangible than learning from a book.

“Technology touches everything. As an early-stage investor I’m always looking for transformative tech companies that change how we play, work, live and entertain ourselves. I’ve invested in unbreakable pantyhose, one of the first food-delivery apps, and COVID vaccines.

Historically, young women have not been encouraged to consider careers in STEM, as the current population of STEM-related positions are filled by males; this is particularly acute in North America. We must reverse this trend and encourage young women at the earliest stages of their educational careers.

Technology touches everything, so we need to prepare the next generation to work in that environment. I strongly believe that education needs to be more than just traditional curriculum. iCAST is offering experiential learning, enhanced by expert mentors, in an innovation ecosystem with hands-on experiences— building things and pitching ideas and building a team to collaborate.

Furthermore, consider the changing nature of the future of work. Over the last decade, the trend of the gig economy has further accelerated as a result of COVID; the whole notion of being an employee has dramatically changed. Our daughters will need to learn to become entrepreneurs. Perhaps they will enjoy a career where they will subcontract their services to a particular organization, or they might choose to hire other subcontractors to build a business to serve a market.

—Eva Lau Martin Kon, President & COO, Cohere (global leader in Gen AI/ Large Language Models); former CFO, YouTube “Technology is constantly transforming every single part of our lives and, right now, we’re on the verge of a generational shift in how humans and computers interact, seen only once every 15 or perhaps 30 years—the web browser in the mid-’90s, smartphones in the late 2000s and now AI-driven conversational agents. However, women are still under-represented in tech in general, and in AI specifically. It’s partly self-fulfilling; without sufficient role models, young girls can’t imagine themselves in these positions and be inspired to work toward those goals. iCAST is going to transform our girls’ lives, and those of kids in the broader Toronto community. Branksome will be a physical and metaphorical focal point for AI and STEM, educating and inspiring girls at Branksome, and across the city and country, just like our two daughters. They’ll be exposed to the unprecedented opportunities for AI and technology exploration, and mentored by the venture capitalists and AI pioneers, including many notable women, who have close ties to Toronto.”

John Ruffolo, Founder & Managing Partner, Maverix Private Equity

Branksome Hall provides the most relevant and forward-thinking education and it’s what we want for our daughter. We grew up in a different world and iCAST ties it all together to prepare girls to excel in a tech-oriented world. To say artificial intelligence changes weekly is an understatement, and given the speed of change, it’s so valuable to learn from real-world experts in the tech fields. It also teaches teachers and democratizes knowledge for the broader community; this is a totally different frontier of education than we’ve seen. Women who run tech companies get less than 2 per cent of global venture-capital spend; we need to prepare our girls to have the confidence and credibility to do better than we’ve done, and go after it in an ambitious and unapologetic way.” (Simone, Grade 4)

These are the skills that will enable the next generation to be leaders in our country, possibly the world, and iCAST is the breeding ground for just that.” (Naomi’20; Peony’22)

In either instance, they will need to understand product development, marketing, accounting and other business-related tools. iCAST combines both these elements of STEM and entrepreneurship to pave their futures and the future of Canada.” (Rome, Grade 9)

CLEARING THE PATH FOR OPPORTUNITY Having met few female mentors on the road to her role as CEO of Roots Canada, Meghan Roach is paving the way for an inclusive gift to Financial Assistance.

Meghan Roach “When I started my career, I did not have many mentors. At the time, there were few women in senior leadership roles or female CEOs. I did not have a template for my path, and it has not been an easy one. As a result, it is very important to me to have the ability to influence the next generation. Women leaders need to give back and speak about the challenges they overcame. Even at my level, I do not have a lot of peers. That is why it is really important for us to focus heavily, in Canada and as a community, to invest in girls and in diversity, to ensure that can be reflected at the leadership level. My husband’s and my family always emphasized the importance of a strong education. We have been very lucky and now we want to create opportunities. We need to create a more level playing field. Investing in Financial Assistance is not a charitable contribution. It is an investment in the future of girls, and in having more interesting and exciting women at the table.” (Charlotte, SK; Sophia, Grade 3)

PRINCIPAL’S FUND

The Annual Fund provided support for our popular and diverse Model UN Club, which builds international-mindedness and community. Branksome’s was the only Canadian club to be invited to the prestigious Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) conference this past January. The theme of the 2023 THIMUN conference was “The Future of Borders.” With Branksome representing South Sudan, the young delegates debated issues to which the UN is seeking solutions.

Put on an Act

Our strong tradition of live performance— with all the incredible learning outcomes that reinforces and strengthens—was supported by Annual Fund contributions for theatre, dance and musical productions, including two at the Meridian Arts Centre: the Senior School’s Seussical the Musical in November, and a sold-out run of the Senior & Middle School’s Freddie and Alice in February.

Focus on Athletics

New soccer goals? New tennis courts? New high-jump mats for the Junior School? Gold-medal showings for our rowers at North American competitions? Check. Athletics at Branksome is where life lessons such as wellness, balance and teamwork are honed, and each year we enhance our resources, ensuring access to top-line equipment and supporting our soccer, tennis, track and rowing programs.

WE THANK ALL OUR CURRENT AND PAST COMMUNITY OF PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS, ALUMS, FACULTY AND STAFF WHO MADE A GIFT TO OUR ANNUAL FUND IN 2022–23. 32

“It has been nice to see Arts programming shine this year. Seussical the Musical was phenomenal and wonderfully accompanied by the Branksome Orchestra. We hope to help support further advancement in drama and music productions.”

Music Room

As the music industry constantly evolves, incorporating more and more innovation, it’s imperative that classrooms are equipped with the latest technology. With its flawless acoustics and a new floor plan and equipment, our revamped music room will prepare Branksome Hall students for the everchanging music world.

Centreing Social-Emotional Learning

As part of the Annual Fund’s attention to emotional support, the Well-Being Speaker Series welcomed internationally renowned educator Rachel Simmons in October. The author of Enough as She Is, Simmons shared practical strategies for supporting girls, such as validating their feelings, showing empathy and sympathy, and simply listening. Her message spoke to the importance of helping girls be risk-takers without ever trading their sense of self-worth or their wellness for success. As well, with support from the Class of ’86 Mental Health Initiative, a screening of Angst was held for the Grades 6–12 community in March. The film aims to remove the stigma and open up conversations about mental health. BRANKSOME HALL

THE POWER OF PARENT GIVING PRINCIPAL’S FUND: SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING Now in its second year, the Grade 6 Legacy Fund empowers students to play an active role in shaping a Junior School legacy of health and well-being for years to come! Their voice is instrumental in developing a list of items the fund will support each year. In 2022–23 it included gardening tools for the Junior School Potting Shed and a gaga ball pit.

“I love the idea of the girls leading a meaningful fundraising effort for the Junior School.”

The Grade 6 Legacy Fund is a beautiful example of how our community embraces Branksome’s value of Making a Difference. Parents and students come together to provide resources to support Social-Emotional Learning at the Junior School and create a meaningful legacy with powerful impact.

Mehreen Irshad—mother of Sarinah’29 and Alina’31—who helped lead the effort. “It’s a wonderful way of showing students that their thoughts and opinions matter, as well as of highlighting the importance of leaving behind a lasting legacy for others. As part of the initiative, students also donated books they’d selected to local charities, having included a personal handwritten message inside. A second copy, inscribed with students’ reflections on health and well-being, was donated to the SEL reading nook in the Junior School Atrium.

Our Grade 6 students are empowered with the agency to shape their legacy. Working together, they choose tools to foster resilience and healthy emotional expression, and to manage stress. The highlight? A new gaga ball pit was installed in September. The dodgeball-style game prioritizes inclusion, well-being and fair play, allowing students of all sizes to excel, as one aims below the knees only. “I love the idea of the girls leading a meaningful fundraising effort for the Junior School,” says 36

FOUR DECADES OF APPRECIATION

ANNUAL FUND

REUNION GIVING

Thank you for helping us unlock opportunity and enrich the school culture for all by removing financial barriers for students to attend Branksome.

Giving has always been a way for classes celebrating their Reunion year to mark the milestone and make a difference in the lives of current and future students. In 2023, we celebrated class years ending in 3 and 8. For many alums, who can now appreciate how different their own lives would have been without the life-shaping role Branksome has played, Financial Assistance is a priority that’s near and dear to their hearts. We asked Anne HEPBURN’73 why she has given to Branksome for 39 years. “There is no one reason.” Here are the many:

Class of ’23 Legacy Fund It’s a tradition for our Graduating Class to provide a gift for future generations. Each year, our Graduating Year students decide how they’d like to leave a legacy. Class parents, along with students, contribute to this significant effort. Together they raised more than $60,000 to establish an endowed fund to support a student who would be unable to attend Branksome otherwise. As generations of alums have done likewise, ongoing contributions post-graduation provide

an incredible impact on future students and a collective sense of community for decades to come. Thank you to parent volunteers Maria Smith and Eric Tripp, Susan Reid and Rik Parkhill, and Jacqueline SZETO Meiers’87 and Bradley Meiers for their fundraising efforts. And a huge thank-you to all parents who generously helped raise $60,010 for the Class of ’23 Legacy Fund.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE The gift of opportunity remains a priority for many members of the Branksome Hall community.

“We are both incredibly proud of our grade’s support for this fund. It means a great deal to both of us, as it is an opportunity for our grade to leave a lasting impact on the lives of individual students, as well as on the overall Branksome community, long after we are gone. We hope that the Class of ’23 Legacy Fund will continue to help students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend Branksome, for a long time to come.” —Lulu DREGER’23 and Claire PARKHILL’23

38

—Sara AUSTIN’93, Annual Fund donor

But the main reason I give is so the school can keep getting better, and so students can benefit from improvements made over the five decades since I graduated—the Branksome I attended is not the school we know now. The International Baccalaureate academics, along with many other programs, make it an unparalleled place for young women to grow and develop lifelong strengths. My family has benefited from [attending] both public and independent schools. We recognize that no one type of school can meet every student’s needs. When students are exposed to solid curricula and [given] direction to grow, their passions and drive will follow suit. It is my hope that there will be adequate funds to support deserving students who need, and will benefit from, what Branksome has to offer.

Our rowers earned three gold medals at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association national championships in June. Thank you to all our amazing and dedicated coaches who make it possible. Read full recaps in the Athletics section on our website.

Memorable Year for the Debating and Public Speaking Society In the first full year back to in-person competitions since 2019, the Branksome Hall Debating and Public Speaking Society had one of its most successful seasons in its history, earning spots at all major debate and public-speaking tournaments. The winter term concluded with Grade 12 students Hao and Elizabeth travelling to Oxford, U.K., where they went into the semi-finals as the only undefeated team out of more than 60. At the inaugural Re:Solved competition, our Munk Debates partnership in May at the University of Toronto’s Hart House, Julian Zhang from University of Toronto Schools and Ruisi He from Shanghai American School competed together in the historic University of Toronto Hart House Debates Room, taking home the $5,000 prize. Thanks to coaches Owen Williams, Emma Taman and Grace Nolan.

Top Honours for Faculty and Leadership

repertoire over two months. In January, four Senior School students saw their creative efforts recognized for one of the most prestigious awards in North America, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Sylvia, Jenny, Mani and Cindy earned a combined eight awards, the greatest number in its history of submissions to the 100-year-old contest.

Record-Setting Robotics The BH Robotics team had remarkable success in its competitions this year, ranking among the top 10 teams in many regional competitions. The members’ hard work and passion for exploring STEM earned the team a spot in the provincial competition for the first time in Branksome history. Robotics is an after-school club for Senior & Middle School students interested in code, design and all things engineering. Each year, the Highlanders participate in VEX Robotics competitions. This year’s challenge was called “Spin Up” and required the team to construct a bot that could perform tasks such as load and launch disks into high goals. The students felt a sense of pride to be participating and making an impact in an industry where the efforts and contributions of women often go unrecognized. The construction of iCAST will give students even more opportunities to get involved in STEM. BRANKSOME HALL

The Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) announced in June that Principal Karen Jurjevich was selected to receive a CAIS Lifetime Achievement Award, a timely and meaningful way to acknowledge Karen’s 25 years of passionate, visionary and innovative leadership. And last October, Head, Innovation and Strategic Projects Michael Ianni-Palarchio launched a new podcast on innovation, The GarageCast, which touches on innovation themes and sparks conversations about the future of education. It has garnered interest worldwide, with more than 15,000 weekly listeners in more than 14 countries! Also, Megan McKellar, Junior School Innovation and Technology Coordinator, presented at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in Philadelphia in June, sharing the innovative ways she makes learning fun for her students. She was also awarded the prestigious Apple Distinguished Educator title, one of only 15 educators in Canada to receive this honour.

CRC Launches Technology Enhanced Learning and Innovation Research Program The Chandaria Research Centre is developing a research program focused on investigating the current use, successes and challenges of technology in education, and its implications for teachers and students. In April, the CRC began exploratory work with teachers, students and DONOR AN D G IVI NG REPORT 22–23

instructional leaders across the school, which includes observations and interviews. Two groups were also launched: an AI think tank for teachers and staff, and an AI research group for students in Grades 9–12. The ultimate goal of this program is to provide Branksome students and employees with voice, choice and a supportive community as they explore the evolving landscape of technology-enhanced teaching and learning. 41

The Branksome Hall Foundation, established in 2005, ensures perpetual support for important program areas and priority projects. Endowment income is used to support student Financial Assistance, capital improvements, upkeep of facilities, curriculum and program enhancement, music, the Arts and Athletics, and school awards and prizes. It is expertly and judiciously managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and its experienced investment team. The Foundation’s holdings are held and invested with a disbursement provided to the school each year. In 2022–23 that disbursement was 4%, increasing to 5% in 2023–24. To protect the endowment’s principal, any additional earnings above the disbursement are reinvested. The Foundation continued to grow in 2022–23 with fund balances of more than $24.36 million.

“Both our daughters have attended Branksome since Junior Kindergarten, and we were incredibly impressed from the start. Early on, Principal Karen Jurjevich said, ‘We’re teaching our students how to be learners so they will be prepared for careers that don’t even exist yet.’ That was mind-blowing in 2007. Branksome is always progressive, whether it’s creating new revenue streams with Branksome Hall Asia or focusing on health and wellness through building the Athletics & Wellness Centre. And now, we’re excited to see the impact Branksome will have with iCAST, as they work to evolve the culture and encourage more women to pursue technology and engineering.
