PRINCIPAL & BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE
You don’t have to look far at Branksome Hall to see courage on display.
2017–18 BRANKSOME HALL BOARD OF GOVERNORS Wayne Barwise CHAIR
It’s in the faces of our students, as they fearlessly seek out knowledge and reach new milestones on their learning journeys. It’s also demonstrated by our dedicated faculty and staff who are continuously striving to take our girls’ Branksome experiences to new heights. Yet, students and employees aren’t the only courageous ones at Branksome. Our entire community is — to use the theme of this Donor and Giving Report — nothing short of truly daring. There are many worthy causes and organizations in the world, each competing for our support. That’s why we’re so very grateful to the hundreds of Branksome parents, alumnae, employees, past parents, grandparents, students and other friends who choose to champion our school and our girls each year. As you read through this Donor and Giving Report, you’ll see several profiles highlighting just a few of our donors pictured alongside Branksome students. Each individual or couple’s story is one-ofa-kind and deeply personal. And yet, they also share a common, uniting bond: they all believe in the unique role Branksome plays in nurturing young women who will shape a better world. When you give to Branksome, you’re making a statement. You’re demonstrating your belief in our school, in our students and in the difference our graduates make, and will continue to make, on the world. Thank you for daring to believe in us. We’re very grateful. Sincerely, Karen L. Jurjevich

The Branksome Hall Foundation was established in 2004 to ensure the long-term fiscal soundness of Branksome Hall. The Foundation is governed by an independent Board of Trustees who are all longstanding school leaders. They are tasked with the perpetual preservation and stewardship of the Foundation’s endowment assets, and are advised by an experienced investment team. In the 14 years since its founding, many donors have chosen to establish named funds with the Foundation. These funds support important program areas and priority projects at the school. We are grateful to these community members for their generosity and dedication.

Three new funds were established in 2017–18, bringing the total number of named endowed and expendable funds held within the Foundation to 77. Thanks to the establishment of these funds — in addition to new restricted funds and existing funds’ investment gains — the value of the Foundation’s holdings grew by 4.8 per cent, ending its fiscal year on June 30, 2018 with a balance of $23,127,743.

CLASS OF 2018 ENDOWED FUND
The Clark family has established the Becca CLARK’17 Award for Enthusiasm and Passion in Middle School Co-Curricular Drama in recognition of the positive experience Becca CLARK’17 had at Branksome Hall and her passion, talent and commitment to the school’s Drama and Theatre program. The award recognizes Grade 7 or Grade 8 students who demonstrate excellence and passion in their co-curricular theatrical pursuits, and who have an outstanding level of commitment to the Middle School Drama program. It was presented for the first time in June 2018 at the annual Green Carpet Celebration.
Following in the footsteps of the Classes of 2017, 1998, 1993 and 1965, Class of 2018 students and parents came together to establish a new bursary. Eighty-three per cent of graduating students, and 65 per cent of their parents participated in the graduating campaign, raising record commitments totalling $100,000. As part of the school’s Student Financial Assistance program, the Class of 2018 Bursary will help more great girls, of all backgrounds, access a Branksome Hall education.

2017-18 Innovation
Through our community’s ongoing support, Branksome continues to lead in innovation-based learning. Community contributions helped fund new technologies, materials and tools in 2017–18. Additional donorfunded virtual reality kits are helping more students experience and build virtual learning programs while new AR (augmented reality) equipment will open up even more opportunities for learning. AI (artificial intelligence) kits will also allow Middle and Senior School students to build their own

visual and voice systems from scratch, while Junior School students will enhance their coding skills by learning how to build and program drones. Donors also helped fund Branksome’s new Robotics Club in 2017–18. The club has proven immediately popular at the Middle and Senior School and student members placed well in their initial robotics competitions. They are looking forward to taking part in expanded opportunities in the school year ahead.
Community members supported nearly every facet of life at Branksome in 2017–18. The following represent just some of the many initiatives funded by donations. MATH PROGRAM
Student Financial Assistance
Thanks to our community’s continued generosity, Branksome awarded more than $915,000 in student financial assistance in 2017–18 — allowing 65 exceptional students in Grades 7 to 12 to experience a Branksome Hall education. Student Financial Assistance helps families with tuition costs while also providing much-needed support for student participation in co-curricular, service and study abroad opportunities. “Being at such an amazing school has helped me grow into someone so different than who I was at the beginning of the year. Every week I spend at the school is better than the last.” A Grade 7 Student Financial Assistance Recipient
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Branksome offers students a first-rate academic experience which is always evolving to reflect the latest educational research and best practices. With support from donors in 2017–18, we embarked on a full assessment of our Junior School Math program. Guided by experts, we will ensure Branksome students continue to develop positive Math mindsets and Math competency, including in basic skills, mental Math as well as individual and collaborative problem solving.
WELL-BEING APP Peer-to-peer support is extremely powerful when it comes to developing personal wellbeing. We are very grateful to members of Branksome’s Class of 1986 whose Well-being Initiative helped support the launch of a unique student-run well-being app in 2018. The app will soon be available for download on the App Store with further donor support being directed to student training with a media expert in order to further enhance the project.
IMAGINATION PLAYGROUND
In 2017–18, donors helped support our journey towards becoming a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) community. SEL teaches students how to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Community contributions will fund a new SEL Working Group which, together with experts from the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (IFSEL), will identify and help develop Branksome’s future SEL approach.
Visit Branksome’s Junior School at recess and you’ll likely see girls engaged with our outdoor Imagination Playground: large, foam bricks that encourage creative play, collaboration, inclusion, spatial and abstract reasoning, as well as social and conflict navigation. Our community’s support in 2017–18 funded the purchase of a new Imagination Playground set — ensuring this popular (and fun!) resource can continue to be enjoyed by Branksome students for years to come.

Women Strong: Gloria Steinem On October 23, activist, lecturer and award-winning author Gloria Steinem joined the Branksome community for two spectacular events. During the day she spoke with more than 600 Grade 6-12 Branksome students as she answered questions about the continued importance of empowering women and the role young women play in the future of equality. In the evening, Branksome hosted a sold-out public conversation with Ms Steinem at the University of Toronto’s historic Convocation Hall, moderated by journalist Amanda Lang.

We celebrated our tenth anniversary as host of the Leacock Foundation’s Leap into Literacy Summer Camp. This special initiative provides students from four TDSB partner schools with extended academic and experiential literacy programs — all provided free-of-charge to the young participants.
Guidance Coordinator Cory Miller received the Rising Star Award from the National Association for College Admission Council (NACAC) for her Webinar Wednesdays.
Math teacher Trevor Ritchie received Stanford University’s Teacher Tribute for exceptional teaching after being nominated for the honour by alumna Alexandra REEVES’17.
Branksome’s 115th Graduation
We honoured our 119 Grade 12 students at Graduation 2018, celebrating their accomplishments and wishing them well as they moved on to top universities in Canada and around the world. Nearly 90 per cent of our students were offered post-secondary scholarships valued at more than $1.9 million. In addition, 19 students earned a bilingual diploma and 98 per cent achieved Ontario Scholar status.
HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR REMARKABLE YEAR
Classrooms of Tomorrow
The Elhaddad Family Classroom was unveiled in September 2017. One of four classrooms of tomorrow now available at the Junior School, this learning space promotes flexible and collaborative thinking with furniture and technology that adapts to student learning styles.
The Right Honorable David Johnston & Mrs. Sharon Johnston The Right Honorable David Johnston, the 28th Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston joined us as special guest speakers at our annual Green Carpet Celebration on June 14. Topics covered during their presentation and a Q&A with students included everything from innovation and well-being, to pluralism and Canada’s role on the global stage.
A Dramatic Year
Music
Honk! — an adaptation of the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling — continued Branksome’s tradition of exceptional Senior theatrical productions. Several dozen students participated in the production as actors, musicians and technical crew members.
Our Grade 9 & 10 Band students earned a silver award at the Ontario Band Association Concert Band Festival and were also invited to attend the prestigious MusicFest National Competition. In addition, a total of 31 students earned a place in the CISMF Concert at Roy Thomson Hall in April, featuring students from nearly 40 CIS Ontario schools.
Middle School students also trod the boards in their spring production of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, while the Junior School kept us “just thinkin’ about tomorrow” in their production of Annie.
Debating and Public Speaking Excellence Grade 12 student Jessica Zheng continued Branksome’s longstanding tradition of elocutionary excellence by qualifying for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. Branksome Hall will proudly host the Worlds in April 2019, welcoming more than 100 talented student competitors from around the globe — the first time this prestigious tournament will be held in Canada.
CRC Officially Launched
In April, we proudly celebrated the official launch of the Chandaria Research Centre (CRC). While director Dr. Mira Gambhir has been laying the groundwork and leading research programs for the past two years, the launch was an opportunity to celebrate the impact already made by the CRC on girls’ education (including the release of the Centre’s first two research briefs on bullying and how sports builds resilience in women).
Junior School in Action
To the Stars!
Our youngest students worked together to raise over $20,000 for charities and causes around the world. The Terry Fox Run kicked off the year of service which continued with the annual Holiday Bazaar and the always popular Junior School Bingo in support of the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto.
Two Grade 10 students, Adele Crete-Laurence and Alexa Vasilakos, were one of ten winning teams of the European Space Agency’s Astro Pi Challenge Mission Space Lab — the only Canadian and all-girl team among the winners. Their project entitled “The Dark Side of Light” collected data on light pollution in space direct from the International Space Station. As a winning team, Adele and Alexa participated in an exclusive webinar with British astronaut Tim Peake.
AI: The Future or Now? Grade 9 BHX Trip More than 100 Grade 9 students took part in a week-long immersive learning experience based in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, as well as in Toronto and Waterloo. They met with leaders in the tech industry, explored local eco-systems and learned how to apply entrepreneurial and collaborative problem-solving totheir own innovative STEAM-related project designs.
Student-led think tank, AI: The Future or Now?, excited and inspired us in April 2018. The panel featured four notable leaders in artificial intelligence (AI) and covered the latest advancements and research on AI, as well as left us thinking about broader ethical questions as its impact on our lives grows.
Alumnae Spirit On June 1 and 2, we welcomed 350 alumnae from years ending in 3 and 8 back to campus for Reunion Weekend. New this year was a Decades Lunch for alumnae from the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, as well as 10 Elm Society members.
A Robotics First Branksome launched a brand new Robotics Club at the Senior and Middle School in 2017–18. The team didn’t disappoint at its inaugural season — placing well in the VEX tournament.
Remarkable Highlanders Hundreds of students participated in athletics in the 2017–18 school year. In the fall, U15 Soccer, U14 Swimming and U14 Cross Country teams placed first in their leagues in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA). In the winter, four swimmers qualified for OFSAA, while over 30 swimmers achieved personal bests at the CISAA championship. Branksome’s U13 Volleyball team and the U14 Ski team won their CISAA championship. Grade 11 student Francesca Johnson won a bronze medal at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in the Senior Lightweight category. In the spring, Branksome’s rowing team won the Women’s Overall Efficiency Title at the CSSRA Championships, bringing home four gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
Award-Winning Communications Despite facing stiff competition from universities and colleges, Branksome received three prestigious awards from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) in the Print Magazine, Ad Campaign and Photo categories.

BRANKSOME HALL
True to their generous spirit and emphasis on community, Branksome’s Class of 2018 chose to mark their time at the school in a remarkable way: leaving a lasting legacy for the benefit of future Branksome students. Students came together to make a class gift in support of a new, needs-based bursary. They were inspired by the knowledge their contributions to Student Financial Assistance would directly benefit future students who otherwise would not be able to attend Branksome. Motivated by their daughters’ class gift, Alison WILEY’82 and Joel Rochon joined their fellow parents Barbara Bottini and Bryan Colangelo in leading an extremely successful parent fundraising effort in support of the same Class of 2018 Bursary. An incredible 83 per cent of students and 65 per cent of their parents contributed to the graduation campaign, raising commitments of $100,000 for the Class of 2018 Bursary — a new Branksome record! The inaugural Class of 2018 Bursary will be awarded in September 2019.
