Branson shop offers more than clothing By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Branson’s Wild Orange Boutique is a unique shopping experience, but not just because of the merchandise they carry. From the first step inside the specialty shop, one is immersed in love, encouragement and positivity. It is evident in the clothing they carry, the quotes on the walls, and in any interaction with owner Erin Wicker. Wicker, who hails from Dallas, Texas has been a resident of. the Ozarks for 16 years. “I’ve been in marketing the whole time,” said Wicker. “I worked for Titanic under Mary Kellogg, then I had my own social media business where I had many clients. But, I really had a heart for helping women, and wondered what I could do career-wise that would do just that.”
That desire led Wicker to opening Branson’s Wild Orange Boutique on Branson Landing Boulevard. Wicker noted, “It took me a year of researching everything before I opened, but I know God gave me this store because every obstacle was easy. He opened doors for me and made this a reality. Since, I’ve prayed for Hm to send me women who need encouragement, women that need to love their bodies. This world is so hard and we are so hard on ourselves, I just want to help change that.” The Wild Orange features a variety of clothing, as well as accessories, hand bags and gift items. “We have a lot of graphic t-shirts, we have fun items, gifts, accessories,” said Wicker. “ We want to have something for everyone. Street Talk: What do you love about living in the Ozarks?
RONI PHILLIPS I moved here 38 years ago because I have horses. Land was cheap and I could have a horse farm. I love living here. I love being in the country. And I really enjoy the entertainment here.
ANN DUBIASH My husband and I moved here from North Central Nebraska for the weather. It was just too cold. The weather is much more mild down here, and we really like that. We also love the lakes and the scenery.
HERB SMITH We really enjoy this God-fearing area of our country. With all that’s going on this area is kind of like a bubble in our nation, an area that believes in God, country, patriotism and hard work.
BECKY GERHART MCCUNE I moved to Branson 35 years ago for my career, and I decided to retire here, because I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. With all that’s going on in the world, I still choose to stay in Branson. Also, my grandkids are here, so that’s a big plus!
LINDA LEE VIVIAN In the Ozarks I have experienced peace I haven’t felt anywhere else. The beautiful hills and the White River drew me in. I truly feel God’s presence here.

Continued from page 1 want a daughter, mother and grandmother to all come in and all find something they love. We offer clothing from sizes small to XXXL, so we really try to encompass every body size and type. I just want women to feel pretty where they’re at. So many people will say ‘I’ll buy new clothes when I get to this weight’ or ‘I’ll buy new clothes when I feel better about myself.’ We just want them to feel good about themselves where they are right now.” Wicker also loves to help other local small businesses. One way she does so is by carrying clothing and accessories created by local business women in her store. About half of the store’s graphic t-shirts, all offering positive sayings such as “Be a kind human” or “Love one another” were created by a Branson area resident. Another local woman designs beautiful earrings that Wicker carries. She also features various local businesses, many owned and operated by women, on her Facebook Live feeds, that became increasingly popular during the five weeks the store was shut down due to Covid-19. “I would do Facebook Lives, and then we started doing home deliveries during the shut-down,” explained Wicker. “That was a huge turning point in our store, because I learned where our customers lived, and I was able to love on them through home delivery. Then, I talk to them on social media. We really became close to our community through all of that.” Wicker’s customers certainly echo that sentiment. “Shopping at the Wild Orange is like shopping with best friends. Erin has become a good friend of mine, and I know her concern goes above and beyond her concern for the bottom line,” noted customer Jeanne Francis. “That kind of love, compassion, and true caring can’t be purchased. She gives it out free every single day, to every customer who enters her shop doors. And the cherry on top is the clothes are stunningly beautiful!” At least a part of Wicker’s desire to help and encourage others was the result of her own personal health crisis
One of the many quotes of encouragement found on the walls of Wild Orange Boutique.
in 2018. “I opened the store in 2017, and about a year later, I found out I had cancer,” recalled Wicker. “It was stage 2T, but I feel like, at any stage, when someone tells you you have cancer, you think ‘Oh, my God! I’m going to die!’ I prayed every day for healing. I had surgery, but thankfully I didn’t have to have any further treatment.” It was this health scare that changed Wicker’s mind about many things. “The cliche about life is short is really my mantra now. Not knowing the outcome, but being able to come out on the other side of that journey healthy and to be given another chance. Now, I feel like whatever new challenges there are on this earth, I have my health, and there’s nothing better than that!” Wicker, who recently celebrated 21 years of marriage, is the mother of two teenage boys. Wicker remains active in her community, often volunteering her time and efforts to help others. Recently she was featured on Branson’s version of Dancing with the Stars, a community event to raise money for Project Graduation. She can also be found most days at her Branson Landing Boulevard store, which is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm. Wherever Wicker is, she is certain to be helping and encouraging others. “In the big picture of life, all that we truly have is our relationships,” Wicker noted.. “If you can just remember that, as we cruise through each day, just remember to love on each other. We really need to spread this message of love!”

David Stoltz, Correspondent, Branson Globe Barbara and I moved to Branson a year ago because of its commitment to faith, family and freedom! In our many prior trips from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to the upper Midwest, we always stopped in Branson to enjoy the shows and the Ozark hospitality. When we had the opportunity we decided to make it our home. We have found
a church family and friends here, along with limitless entertainment options. As native flat-land Midwesterners we find the hills a challenge, but we are adapting. To see the red, white and blue proudly flying and our veterans honored for their service is uplifting and reassuring. Branson and the Ozarks reflect our values – pro-family, pro-military and pro-country. It is our home.

K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer, Branson Globe I came to the Ozarks in 1986 to go to college and fell in love with the entertainment aspect of Branson. Since that time I have grown to love nearly everything about our area -- the shows, the dining options, the attractions, the beauty, the lakes, the wildlife and the people.
I truly enjoy meeting our visitors from around the world, and sharing my love of Branson with them. I am also grateful for the many opportunities we have here to volunteer, to be of service to others. People reaching out to help one another, neighbors helping neighbors, is one of the things I love most about living in the Ozarks.

4-year-old yells ‘Black Lives Matter’ at a woman in Home Depot - now they’re good friends Good News Network When a Colorado mom heard her 4-year-old daughter yell ‘Black Lives Matter’ to a woman in Home Depot this summer, she wasn’t expecting such a beautiful friendship to blossom for the pair. Sherri Gonzales was out shopping in Commerce City when she heard a little girl say the words that have been chanted on thousands of streets around the world this summer. “She said it with strength, like she was making a point,” Sherri told KCNC in Denver. That little girl was Camryn Radcliff. Her mom, Cassi, wasn’t sure how a person would react to having ‘Black Lives Matter’ yelled at
them. Sherri Gonzales looked at Cam and said, “Thank you so much for saying that and for recognizing that my life matters.” The pair became fast friends, and took a photo together. Cam then sweetly invited Sherri over for a sleepover, so the group exchanged numbers. Since then, Cam and her mom have deepened their relationship with their new friend–recently holding a garage sale in which they donated all the proceeds to Gonzales’ organization Sherri’s Girls Empowerment International. Over two days, the sale made $2,070—money that will now go
towards sending girls to school in Kenya. “All of this happens,” Sherri told KCNC, “because a sweet little 4-yearold recognized that my life matters.” The pals have recently found an-
other thing they share in common: a love for the Denver Broncos. Cam wants to be a cheerleader for them when she grows up. Sherri’s son, D.J. Williams, is a former linebacker for the NFL team.
The impressive duo’s new bond just goes to show: It’s never too early to start putting some good vibes out there into the world. And it’s never too late to make a new friend.

Good News Network Do you remember when the aisles of grocery stores were emptied of toilet paper and other staples at the beginning of the pandemic? Nurse Stacy Mason recalls seeing her fellow healthcare workers finishing up long shifts caring for the sick in ICU, only to find the sundries they needed for their families–like diapers and sanitary wipes–couldn’t be found anywhere. The Virginia mother-of-two had an idea: She could start a pantry in her Intensive Care Unit. Then staff could share any extras they had with their colleagues. The pantry took off immediately. Inspired by its success, Stacy then thought to herself: if sharing is working at this small scale, couldn’t it work for the whole of Mary Washington Healthcare? For her brilliant launching of such a vital resource in her community, she’s been recognized as a Hometown Hero of Fauquier County. These days, it’s not just Stacy working on the volunteering effort. An entire ‘Mary Washington Hospital Team Pantry’ has come
together. Their mantra for the donations initiative? “Give what you can: take what you need.’” Toothpaste and other basic toiletries that hospital workers just don’t have time to shop for often show up as donations. Baby products are also typically available, as are nonperishable food items—no questions asked. Mason tells The Free LanceStar, “Now that summer has come, we’re seeing some fresh produce come in, items grown in people’s gardens, and that’s really neat.” “There are plenty of people who come through and take advantage of the pantry who are now in single-income families because of the virus,” she said. “There are also others who have lost a loved one and are facing different financial realities, and staffers who aren’t working the number of hours they once did.” The pantry has made a big difference in people’s lives. “We know that many of our associates’ families are feeling the economic impacts of coronavirus,” Mary Washington Healthcare posted on Facebook, “and it’s nurses like Stacy Mason who demonstrate why 2020 is the Year of the Nurse.”

Hero teacher spent every day in lockdown preparing food for his pupils...and delivering it Good News Network An award-winning “hero” teacher in England who spent each day preparing food for his students has made his final de-
livery—after delivering 7,500 packed lunches. Zane Powles diligently prepared 85 lunches each morning after fearing his students would
struggle to access food when school’s were shut during the pandemic. The determined teacher walked 7.5 miles every day making his
rounds for 17 weeks—and totaled over 600 miles over the course of his runs in North East Lincolnshire. The 48-year-old estimates that he carried roughly four tons of food during that time, but said it was all “well worth it” after seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces. When the school—where he packs lunches—closed for the summer on July 17, Zane delivered his final food package on the emotionally charged Friday afternoon. “When I started these walks I was concerned about the kids and their wellbeing and I wanted to make sure I could see them all, said Zane, who works at Western primary school in the large coastal seaport of Grimsby. “I needed to know if they were safe, if they were healthy, and if they had access to food.” “After all these months it was a bit emotional for it to come to an end—I love seeing my students and checking up on them. It’s so important to me. “I’m just doing my job at the end of the day. My role is to help nurture and educate children, and to take care of them. He added: “I can’t believe how far it’s gotten—I never expected to do any of this, but it’s crucial
that it doesn’t end here. The early riser got to school at 7am to start preparing and packaging the food before heading out on his two-hour journey—and he didn’t take a single day off during the pandemic while undertaking the mammoth task. While delivering the lunches, he occasionally left his students some homework—which he says they were “less keen on”. The dad-of-three said, “It’s been relentless and exhausting but it’s been well worth it. They’re always so happy and grateful.” Zane also commended Manchester United star Marcus Rashford who successfully campaigned for free school meal vouchers for children in the summer. But said his mission is far from complete and he wants to continue to help children in need. He will be cycling through all of the UK’s city castles in a journey which will take him 1,500 miles to finish. With stops include Edinburgh Castle, Belfast Castle, Dublin Castle, Cardiff Castle, and the Tower of London, he is raising funds for Meals and More, which provides support to children who live with poverty. been featuring a “Summer Rewind” movie series highlighting throwback hits like Gremlins, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Empire Strikes Back. “Bringing older, cherished films back to the big screen has been fun,” said Forster, “but more importantly, we’ve wanted to continue to provide moviegoers with that special, immersive IMAX Experience.” Branson’s IMAX Entertainment Complex has implemented significant safety procedures to ensure guest, team and community wellness. Those measures include: plexiglass dividers at the box office and concessions; increased cleaning and sanitizing of all high contact areas; sanitizing theater seating and handrails with professional electrostatic equipment; and physical distancing of parties within each movie theater. “Branson’s currently under a mask ordinance, so of course we’re masked. Once you’re seated with your favorite movie
treats, those masks can be removed.” said Forster. “We’re one of few movies theaters currently open throughout the country, and we’ve had nearly two months to perfect our safety protocols and our cleaning techniques. The bottom line is, we’ve taken every precaution to ensure the safety of our team and guests.” ITEC Attractions, the parent company of Branson’s IMAX Entertainment Complex also owns Branson’s additional movie theater, Branson Meadows Cinema 11, which has remained closed since March. Plans to reopen Branson Meadows Cinema 11 are ongoing and it’s expected to reopen before the end of the year, as new releases continue and enough content warrants its return. birth and first experience. Chrystal Hicks gave birth to Sky Airon Hicks on Aug. 5 around 1 a.m. after boarding a plane to be flown from the small community of Glennallen to a hospital, KTUU-TV reported. She was 35
weeks pregnant. “I was just having contractions and it wouldn’t stop, and it kept getting stronger and they thought we were going to make it,” Hicks said. “But we obviously didn’t make it very far.”
Hicks gave birth less than an hour into the flight, she said. “It was shocking, it was really weird at first, I didn’t know what to think,” Hicks said. “But everybody kept talking about the baby on the plane.” Hicks and her son made it safely to the hospital. Sky was placed on a breathing machine when he arrived because he was born a month premature. The baby is expected to be discharged from the hospital next week. Hicks said filing out the birth certificate information was difficult because they were about 18,000 feet in the air. “I just put Anchorage,” Hicks said. “I didn’t want to put on a plane or in the sky.” Hicks has three other children — ages 3, 9 and 11. Wayward emu captured running through New Jersey city PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — A wayward emu was taken to an animal shelter after it was captured while running through the streets of a northern New Jersey city. A woman spotted the longlegged bird on Tuesday morning
bransonglobe.com in a residential neighborhood near Paterson’s border with Totowa. Animal control officers managed to snare the emu, which is about 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall. The emu was placed in a large animal cart and was taken to a shelter, where officials arranged for the emu to be examined by a veterinarian. Officials were not sure whether the bird had escaped from a farm or was just running out in the wild. Chief Animal Control Officer John DeCando told NJ.com the emu appeared healthy. He could not determine its age or sex, “but I can tell you it needs a bath,” DeCando said. Bald eagle shows air superiority, sends drone into lake ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) — A bald eagle launched an aerial assault on a drone operated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy — known as EGLE — ripping off a propeller and sending the aircraft into Lake Michigan. The attack happened July 21, when the drone was mapping shoreline erosion near Escanaba

bransonglobe.com CURIOUSITIES Aug 16 - 18, 2020 • 17 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to document and help communities cope with high water levels, the department said in a statement. Environmental quality analyst and drone pilot Hunter King said he had completed about seven minutes of the mapping flight when satellite reception became spotty. King pressed a button to return the $950 drone to him and was viewing his video screen when the drone began to twirl. “It was like a really bad roller coaster ride,” said King, who looked up and saw the eagle flying away, apparently unhurt by its confrontation with technology. Two birdwatchers who were nearby saw the bird attack something but told officials they didn’t realize it was a drone. The drone sent 27 warning notifications in the 3.5 seconds that it took to spiral to the water, including one noting that a propeller was missing. A search of the shoreline failed to find the drone. Data later revealed that it landed in 4 feet of water about 150 feet offshore. EGLE’s drone team is considering what it can do to reduce the possibility of a repeat attack, including possibly using “skins” or other designs on the aircraft to make them look less like seagulls, the agency said. Creator of mosquito-themed state flag says design was a joke JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man who submitted a proposal to place a giant mosquito on the new state flag, a design that went viral on social media, said he created it as a joke. Thomas Rosete, a deckhand on the Yazoo River, told the Clarion Ledger he created the “mosquito flag,” which features a giant mosquito surrounded by a circle of stars, to poke fun at a coworker who had been against changing the flag. Working on the river, he said he is very familiar with Mississippi mosquitoes and it felt like a fitting way to represent the state. “They’re everywhere,” he told the Ledger. “They’re terrible.”
Mississippi is currently in the process of choosing a new flag. Lawmakers took a historic vote this year to take down the old state flag, which featured the Confederate battle flag, a symbol widely condemned as racist. A nine-member commission will recommend a replacement flag. Rosete and nearly 3,000 Mississippians have since submitted designs for a new state flag. Some of the designs were more serious than others. Among the submissions were flags decorated with a Gulf Coast lighthouse, a teddy bear, Kermit the Frog and the mosquito flag. The commission approved about 150 proposals for the second round, and the state Department of Archives & History put those on its website on Monday. Many were surprised that the mosquito flag had made the cut, along with dozens of designs featuring Mississippi magnolia flowers. The reaction on social media was immediate: People loved it. “Personally, I love the Mosquito Flag. ... the cheekyness (sic) of it is on brand,” one Mississippi native wrote on Twitter.
“I’m slowly realizing my love for the mosquito flag might not even be ironic,” another commented. “It’s so bad it’s good. I would proudly fly the mosquito.” Supporters’ hopes were dashed on Tuesday, however. Archives & History released a statement saying the design had been advanced mistakenly
and would be removed from the list. People soon began to express their remorse. “I don’t feel like anyone dodged a bullet here rather they squandered an opportunity,” one person wrote on Twitter. “No,” another said. “The mosquito flag is destined to be in that round!”
“Fly high, mosquito flag,” a Mississippi journalist tweeted. Rosete told the Ledger that even though it was short-lived, it was nice to see people rally around the flag. “I’m a sucker for underdog stories and the Mosquito Flag was definitely the underdog going into the competition,” he said.
