Dear Branson Community, October is almost gone, and I am looking forward to a busy, productive, and thankful November starting with the lighting of Christmas decorations around the city, national elections on the 3rd, Veterans Homecoming Week 5th-11th, and Thanksgiving on the 26th. I love this time of the year. May we all welcome the 2020 Branson Crappie Expo & Mr. Crappie Classic Tournament to Branson this weekend. This should be a great event in the Branson Convention Center and Table Rock Lake State Park. For additional information on this event, see the Branson Chamber of Commerce website. We conducted a regular Board of Aldermen meeting this past Tuesday. It was a very productive meeting. As always, you can see the agenda for that meeting as well as watch a replay of that meeting in the “Agendas & Minutes” section on the City’s website, www.bransonmo.gov. I would like to congratulate Elevate Branson for receiving a new tiny home sponsorship this week. In a nice ceremony on Wednesday, it celebrated the sponsorship in honor of a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran. As we ramp up for Veterans Homecoming Week, I would also like to congratulate the newly activated Branson Veter-

ans of America 913. This group is the former Branson Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 913. In a meeting last month, they went through the formal process to increase their focus on veterans from all eras of service with the goal of sustaining

a history of service to the community, veterans, and their families. We wish you great success and growth. The City is continuing to prepare to move its recycling equipment to Taney County. Recent work at the Taney County Transfer Station includes modification of the dock and electrical work for the new center. While Taney continues its work, we have had our center temporarily reopened for a month now and in that time, we average 46 users a day with 26% of the users being City of Branson residents and 74% coming from the surrounding cities, counties, and states. I ask that we all emphasize traffic safety this time of the year. With all the tourists and

guests in town, construction projects, and potential slippery weather, it is important for us to stay even more focused on the pedestrian and vehicular traffic on our city streets. Speaking of streets, our Public Works & Engineering Department does an outstanding job of maintaining our 255 lane miles of roads and right of ways and keeps them as safe as possible. They also maintain approximately 4,000 signs throughout town and maintain our street signals. For those who pray, please continue to pray for City staff and the Board of Aldermen. Please stay positive and be thankful for living in the best city in America. Thank you for letting me serve you. Mayor Edd Akers

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Most visitors to Susan Abar’s shop in Branson’s Grand Village hear the story of the woman who began The Copper Coin. It is the story of a woman who had breast cancer and while recovering from that surgery was given a new diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. It is the story of a woman finding two pennies that reminded her to put her trust in God. It is a story of

More than just jewelry at Branson’s Copper Coin hope and of healing. It is Susan Abar’s story. In 2003, Susan Abar was diagnosed with breast cancer. This diagnosis came just two weeks after Susan, a highly skilled and successful professional, was laid off from her job. At that time, Susan thought life couldn’t get any worse. Susan sought treatment, including a bilateral mastectomy to rid herself of the breast cancer. During

post-surgery testing, however, doctors found a mass on Abar’s pancreas. Cancer of the pancreas had robbed Abar of both her mother and her grandfather.

“They had found a fast-growing mass on my pancreas,” said Abar. “They gave me no hope for survival. During that time, my son was overseas in the mil-

away. My mother had passed away from pancreatic cancer in just seven weeks, so I knew my time was short.” While at the hospital, Abar received a visitor—a man she credits with changing her life. “A man came to the hospital one day and asked me what I was praying for,” Abar noted. “I

According to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, 29% of fatal fires had inoperable smoke alarms or none present at all. Smoke alarms should be placed in each sleeping room, on each level of the home and in common areas such as hallways and stairwells. “Smoke alarms are inexpensive. For very little money, you provide an excellent tool to warn you of smoke or a fire in the home and give occupants those critical extra seconds to escape,” said Branson Fire Rescue Chief Ted Martin. “It’s typically not the fire that kills but the toxic smoke, especially when folks

You should also replace any that are more than 10 years old, push the test button to make sure the alarm functions, and take the time to develop a home fire escape plan. Smoke alarms may be installed free for Branson residents if they can’t afford one. For more information about how to get a smoke alarm, contact the City of Branson Fire Department’s Technical Services Division at 417-243-2780. heart to Jesus and be open to receive a miracle.” Abar believed in God, and had for many years, but admitted she had pushed Him away. Said Susan, “I was a churchgoer. I believed in God, and I believed Jesus was real. But I had put Jesus in a box. He could come out when I thought it was OK.” Days after her encounter with that man, Abar again committed her life to following Christ. She also made an appointment to visit MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for another opinion regarding the mass on her pancreas. Prior to the trip to Houston, Abar made a trip to Washington. On that trip, she found a penny on the ground. “It was old and dirty, but I picked it up. I remembered the old poem about ‘Find a penny,

pick it up, and all the day you’ll have good luck’. But I said, “Lord, I trust in you, not in the penny,” Abar recalled. “It was important to me that God knew I was not superstitious.” Abar put that penny in her right shoe, and even though she wasn’t superstitious the penny was important to her, and when she discovered it was missing, she was saddened. Later, Abar again found the penny in the aisle of the plane. Determined not to misplace it this time, Abar put the penny in her left shoe.

Imagine her surprise when that night she discovered a penny in each shoe. Abar placed both pennies in her jewelry box not knowing what a big part of her future those two pennies would become. The following day, Abar made her scheduled trip to Houston to find out more details of her cancer diagnosis. “I got there, and they told me there was nothing they could do,” said Abar. “I was told to get my affairs in order. They did want to do some genetic testing

though because of the family history with cancer. The testing took two days. They got done and came out and told me they didn’t know what happened, but the mass on my pancreas was gone!” When Abar went to Houston, she never thought she’d return to her home.

Nov. 1 - 3, 2020 • 13 “I had gone down there to die. I never thought I’d see my house again, and here I was, going back,” Abar said. She spent the next three years working for some large corporations, but none of the jobs lasted long. At the end of the three years, Abar SEE COPPER COIN, PAGE 14

decided to write her story to share hope with others in need. A year after her book was published, Susan married husband, Ron, and moved to Branson. After relocating to the area, Susan was approached by a man who told her she was to open a

store. Susan had recently found she had a knack for jewelry making and design. In fact, the two pennies she had placed in her jewelry box years before had become her first pieces of jewelry. Yet, Abar didn’t think a store was in her future. Abar said, “I argued with the man, and he reminded me of the story in the Bible of the

men with the talents.” He said, “You’ve been given a talent you didn’t even know you had! You make beautiful jewelry, you’ve written a book, you warm people’s hearts and encourage them.” Abar said, “He reminded me that I was supposed to be taking care of others.” The following Sunday, Abar and her husband drove to Tan-

ger Mall and in May of 2011 the original Copper Coin store was opened. The store remained in that location until December of the same year when Tanger opted to lease the space to a timeshare company, and Abar’s store moved to downtown Branson. Later, the store would relocate to The Grand Village. The Copper Coin is a unique and uplifting shop filled with stunning jewelry of all kinds. “We have standard penny jewelry that reminds us “In God We Trust.” We have miniature penny jewelry, we have snap jewelry, we have five different lines,” Abar explained. “The miniature snap jewelry we create right here in Branson.” In addition to jewelry, The Copper Coin offers plaques,

bransonglobe.com crosses, ornaments, angels and other inspirational gifts. One popular item is the 2020 Angel. Said Susan, “Some people say they don’t want to celebrate 2020, but I think we need to look at it differently. We need to reset ourselves. We need to look at ourselves in a different way and to cherish this time. This is a time for us to grow.” Another bestseller is Abar’s book, entitled “Against All Odds—Two pennies, A Rainbow, and a Woman Called Mercy,” which has now sold over 15,000 copies. The Copper Coin is truly a hidden gem in Branson and is very popular among shoppers. In fact, the store is ranked #1 out of 95 shops in Branson on SEE COPPER COIN, PAGE 15

This Dec. 16, 2019 file photo shows composer and executive producer Andrew Lloyd Webber attending the world premiere of “Cats” in New York. Webber is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of his “Jesus Christ Superstar” album with the first single from his latest musical — “Cinderella.” The song is called “Bad Cinderella” and is sung by Carrie Hope Fletcher, who plays the title character in what is being billed as a “complete reinvention of the classic fairytale.” (Photo by Evan Agostini/ Invision/AP, File)

plete reinvention of the classic fairytale.” The single is a portrait of a fearsome woman standing apart from society’s rules: “They call me a wretch/A witch/Well, choose one,” the heroine sings. “Every fairytale for sure can

use one/Sorry I’m so rude/Sorry you’re so lame/I won’t play your game.” Lloyd Webber and his cast were ready to start rehearsals in the spring in London when they SEE WEBBER, PAGE 19

— and many theaters across the globe — were stopped by the virus pandemic. Waiting has been frustrating and he and the cast recorded the cast album in their homes during lockdown. He hopes releasing music will help. “We couldn’t find any other way to getting it out,” said the composer Thursday from the bar in the London Palladium as he waited for a listening party for the upcoming clutch of songs. “It’s the only way I could get my music out and present the score.” Fifty years ago this month, Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, unable to get any theaters to put on a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” switched the regular order and released a cast album first. That led to interest and set Lloyd Webber on a steady course to musical and theatrical superstardom, with such shows as “Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Evita.”

KEEP CALM AND WASH YOUR HANDS

“The reason it came out first is because nobody in the world wanted to produce it because they thought it was such a terrible idea,” he said. “The irony of 50 years later my having to do another concept album because I’m not able to get my show on stage has suddenly not been lost on me.” The new stage musical “Cinderella” features a brand new score from Lloyd Webber with lyrics by David Zippel. Lloyd Webber hopes it will open next spring in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. He’s already teased it with a social me-

dia video of the song “Far Too Late.” During the shutdown, Lloyd Webber has been busy on social media — dancing on TikTok, sharing videos on Twitter and making Spotify playlists — as well as permitting the free streaming of his shows to benefit The Actors Fund and other international organizations. He also has been readying his London theaters for a post-pandemic reopening. He owns or coowns seven West End theaters including the Gillian Lynne Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Palladium.

“I decided that we’re not shutting down, actually. We’re going to actually do essential work and improvements to the buildings,” Lloyd Webber said. That has meant such things as new bathrooms and state-of-the-art ventila-

A little warmer, drier: Picture perfect start to November By Daryl Weather, Weather Forecaster Well, it was a wet week across the Ozarks. We ended recording 6.75 Inches in our rain gauge at the office for the last week.

According to Jamie Warriner at KOLR, it was the 4th wettest final week of October on record. Monday morning will be a bit brisk so make sure to dress warm on your way out the door in the

morning! Temps will rebound to around 60 during the day. Our upcoming week looks much drier and a warming trend throughout the week. Highs will be in the 70s Wednesday and Thursday.

Looks like we might have a shot for more by the end of the upcoming weekend, Until then, enjoy the dry and warmer weather Friends! I’ll see you in our Wednesday edition!
