PERSPECTIVE MONTAGE
PHILADELPHIA IS A VIBRANT COMPACT CITY DISCONNECTED FROM THE NORTH SIDE DUE TO THE ADDITION OF I-676, WHICH HAS DISCOURAGED DEVELOPMENT FROM CENTER CITY TO NORTH PHILADELPHIA. ONE OF THE MANY UNDEVELOPED AREAS NEXT TO I-676 IS ONE WITH A SUBWAY STATION THAT CAN BE A GREAT RESOURCE TO I-676 DEVELOPMENT. REGENERATIVE BRAKING IS A NEW PILOT PROGRAM FOR SEPTA SUBWAY CARS TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION, HOWEVER 50% OF THE ENERGY CANNOT BE USED AND IS RELEASED AS HEAT. THE FLUX LOFTS TAPS INTO THE SUBWAY STATION BELOW TO ALLOW THE HEAT TO RISE UP INTO THE LOFTS DURING THE WINTER. THE INSULATED SUBWAY ALSO PROVIDES COOL AIR DURING THE SUMMER.

PERSPECTIVE MONTAGE
EACH UNIT ALLOWS FOR MIGRATION TO OCCUR TO ACCOMMODATE THE CHANGES IN SEASON. ALL UNITS ARE ORIENTED TOWARD THE SUN TO ALLOW FOR OPTIMAL SOLAR HEAT GAIN, PASSIVE COOLING AND TO GIVE RESIDENTS A VIEW OF CENTER CITY. THE SIZE OF THE HEAT BOX DEPENDS ON THE UNIT’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE SUN, SUBWAY, AND OTHER UNITS. THEREFORE, PARAMETRIC SECTIONAL ANALYSIS WAS USED FOR EACH UNIT TO DETERMINE THE SIZE OF THE HEAT BOX AND IN TURN GIVING THE COMPLEX VARIETY. THE ADDITION OF THIS COMPLEX IS TO ENCOURAGE GROWTH ALONG I-676, THERE BY BRINGING MORE RESIDENTS TO THE AREA, WHICH INEVITABLY WOULD INCREASE THE USAGE OF THE SUBWAY STATION. MORE UNITS CAN BE ADDED AS THE SUBWAY STATION’S USAGE INCREASES. THIS LED TO THE DESIGN OF MODULAR UNITS THAT CAN BE PREFABRICATED OFFSITE AND PLUGGED INTO THE COMPLEX. THE HEAT BOX CAN BE EXCHANGED FOR A LARGER OR SMALLER BOX DEPENDING ON THE CHANGE IN HEAT PRODUCTION.

FINAL ORIGAMI MODEL
TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY IS A VIBRANT AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY SPREAD OUT ACROSS 1,839 ACRES MAKING IT THE SECOND LARGEST CAMPUS IN THE UNITED STATES. THE INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE BUILDINGS ARE SEPARATED BY LARGE PLAZAS, STREETS, PARKING LOTS AND GENERAL WEST TEXAS LANDSCAPE. MANY AREAS BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS SERVE NO USAGE OTHER THAN PEDESTRIAN TRAVEL. THE UNIVERSITY CURRENTLY STRUGGLES TO CREATE COHESION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL COLLEGES DUE TO THE LARGE SEPARATIONS THERE BY THE CAMPUS LACKS OUTDOOR SOCIAL ACTIVITY. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO REVITALIZE THE OUTDOOR CAMPUS LIFE BY DESIGNING A LANDSCAPE TO REPLACE A PARKING LOT SITTING BETWEEN THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING AND THE STUDENT CENTER. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO RECONNECT THE MAIN CAMPUS BOULEVARD WITH THE STUDENT CENTER BY SUBMERGING THE PARKING AND CREATING A DOUBLE LAYER LANDSCAPE. THE DOUBLE LAYER LANDSCAPE ALLOWS FOR STUDENTS TO FREELY MOVE IN AND OUT OF THE LAYERS IN ORDER TO CREATE MOMENTS OF PAUSE FOR STUDENT INTERACTION AND PROTECTION FROM THE SUN.

MANY FORMAL PRINCIPLES AND FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS THAT GOVERN JAZZ HAVE ANALOGIES IN ARCHITECTURE SUCH AS: SPACE, TIME, SEQUENCES, LINKS, CONNECTIONS, INTERPLAY, COUNTERPOINT, PROGRESSION, TENSION-RELEASE, THEME, SCALE, ETC. N OPEN LOT LOCATED NEXT TO AN ABANDONED LAW OFFICE BUILDING BECAME THE LOCAL DAY-LABORERS PLACE TO WAIT FOR CLIENTS. THE ABANDONED BUILDING PROVIDES LIMITED SHADE AREA AND WEATHER PROTECTION. THE DAY-LABOR STATION WAS DESIGNED USING SHIPPING CONTAINERS FOR THEIR EASY STACKING ABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY. THE STATION ALSO SERVES AS A SIGN TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY AS A PLACE WHERE DAY-LABORERS RESIDE. THE STRUCTURE NOT ONLY SERVES AS A SIGN, BUT ALSO REPRESENTS THE WORKER’S CRAFTSMANSHIP, DEXTERITY, AND CONSTRUCTION ABILITY.

SEOUL IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF ONE OF THE LARGEST CITIES IN WORLD. CURRENTLY YONGSAN/ ‘DREAM-HUB’ IS CURRENTLY THE BACKOF-HOUSE FOR YONGSAN TRAIN STATION, WHICH IS THE MAIN TRAIN STATION IN SEOUL. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO FIND A NEW MEANS FOR URBAN DESIGN AWAY FROM THE MODERNIST WAYS OF MASTER PLANNING. THE NEW URBAN DESIGN INTRODUCES A NEW FORMAL CAPACITY WITH NESTS OF URBAN QUALITIES. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR THE COMPLEXITY OF URBAN CULTURE TO BE EXPRESSED IN A MORE FLUID DYNAMIC RATHER THAN SIMPLY PLACING STREETS, VOLUMES AND THEN SOMEHOW LIFE EXISTS IN THE MIDDLE. IT IS THE COMPLEXITY AND EXPRESSION OF QUALITIES THAT HAS BEEN LOST DUE TO MODERNIST DESIGN, BUT THROUGH NESTED INTENSITIES THESE QUALITIES ARE INJECTED INTO THE URBAN DESIGN.

TEGEL IS BERLIN’S OLDEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CURRENTLY STILL IN OPERATION WHILE A NEW AIRPORT IS BEING CONSTRUCTED SOUTH OF BERLIN. THE CITY OF BERLIN HELD A COMPETITION FOR TE-
GEL 2050.
MASTER PLANNING HAS RESTRICTED THE CREATIVITY OF ARCHITECTURE, THUS THIS FRAMEWORK SEEKS TO INVERT THIS PROCESS OF MASTER PLANNING BY STARTING WITH THE URBAN LIFE QUALITIES RATHER THAN THE STREET GRID. THE FRAMEWORK IS A VISION ACTING AS GUIDELINES FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT. THIS FRAMEWORK REPRESENTS THE INTERLACING OF NATURE INTO THE URBAN CONDITION AND STILL KEEPING THE MAIN TERMINAL AND THE MAIN LANDING STRIP AS PART OF THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE. A WATER CANAL IS INSERTED AS THE DIVIDER BETWEEN THE NATURE AND URBAN CONDITIONS.
URBAN CURRENTS IS ONE OF SIX STUDIO PROJECTS SERVING AS AN EXAMPLE FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN TEGEL. URBAN CURRENTS USES WATER AS A DEVICE FOR SUSTAINING FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND URBAN LIFE.

WATER HAS BECOME AN UNDER UTILIZED RESOURCE IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS. NOT JUST AS A MEANS OF GREY WATER RECYCLING, BUT AS A DEVICE FOR GENERATING AND SUSTAINING A HEALTHY URBAN LIFESTYLE. TEGEL AIRPORT CAN SERVE AS THIS EXAMPLE BY INTRODUCING A CANAL AS THE SITE DEVELOPMENT GENERATOR. URBAN CURRENTS USES THE CANAL AS MEANS FOR BRINGING THE URBAN EDGE TO THE WATER RATHER THAN BEING SEPARATED BY SOME OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE. WATER IS USED AS A DEVICE FOR SUSTAINING THE ARTIST COMMUNITY BY IGNITING CREATIVITY.

AREA. THE WORK AND EXHIBITION AREAS HAVE OPERABLE WALLS TO GIVE THE ARTIST THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISPLAY THEIR WORK TO THE PUBLIC AND TO CLOSE THE WALLS AT NIGHT FOR PRIVACY. THE EXHIBITION SPACES ARE LOCATED ADJACENT TO ONE ANOTHER TO ALLOW THE ARTIST TO CREATE SHARED EXHIBITION SPACES.

THE ARTIST DEVELOPMENT SERVES AS THE BUFFER BETWEEN OTHER FUTURE URBAN DEVELOPMENTS AND THE CANAL. THERE IS AN OPERABLE ROOF SPANNING BETWEEN THE ARTIST STUDIOS TO ACCOMMODATE FOR CERTAIN SEASONAL CONDITIONS. WATER SERVES AS A MEANS OF CONDITIONING THE INTERIOR OF THE ARTIST COMMUNITY.

PARK IS AN EXISTING HORSE RACE TRACK IN MIAMI, FLORIDA HOME TO THE ICONIC FLAMINGOS AS SHOWN IN THE FAMOUS TV SERIES ‘MIAMI VICE’. MR. BRUNETTI (CLIENT) WANTS THE PARK TO GROW INTO A LARGER ENTERTAINMENT DEVELOPMENT BY ADDING A CASINO TO THE EXISTING GRANDSTAND. THE CASINO ADDITION SEEKS TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF HIALEAH PARK’S
GARDEN-SCAPE BY CREATING A FACADE TRELLIS, WHICH ALLOWS CERTAIN PLANTS TO GROW ALONG THE FACADE SIMILAR TO THE NORTH GRANDSTAND. THE NEW ADDITION FRAMES THE MAIN FOUNTAIN GARDEN BY CAPPING THE NORTH END OF THE GARDEN CREATING AN INNER GARDEN COURTYARD.
