Tested to SAE J259 for ignition switches. Plastic facenut and nickel-plated brass backing nut. Supplied with two matching double bitted keys, with or without TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) key boot. Mounting stem M22 x 1.5 is 0.85" long (21.6mm) and 0.87" diameter (22.0mm ). Double-D mounting hole is 22.5mm diameter with two flat sides at 9.75mm from the center. Maximum panel thickness 8mm. For replacement keys see page 5. 10A at 12V DC, 5A at 24V DC.

With Push-To-Choke M-832 Plastic Body BP Key is removable only in the Off position, spring return to IGN. Electrical ratings at 6-36V DC: 15A Ignition, 5A Start. Six nickelsilver screw terminals. Durable plastic case and stem with PVC boot for added weather protection. Long mounting stem 2.00" (50.8mm) long, fits panels up to 1 3/8" (34.9mm) thick, and with 7/8" diameter hole (22.2mm) Fits many boats, including Bayliner, ChrisCraft, Sea Ray.

M-550-25 With Protective Cap Same as M-550, except with a captive plastic cap that snaps over a special facenut to protect the lock when not in use. Fits panels up to 5/8” (15.9mm).

M-932 Key is removable only in the Off position, spring return to IGN. Electrical ratings at 12V DC: 5A Ignition, 5A Start, 2A Choke. M-6110-01 Weather-Resistant Same as M-550, except with O-ring seal in the mounting stem, and with spring-actuated shutter in the lock face to protect the cylinder when not in use.

Sealed Switches with Pilot Lights 25A at 12V DC. LED or incandescent. These general purpose switches are suitable for many kinds of marine applications. They are weatherresistant with contact areas sealed to IP66 (high pressure wash resistant). Switches snap into standard rocker switch holes 1.45" x 0.08" (36.8 x 21.1mm) in panels from 0.09" to 0.19" thick (2.4 x 4.7mm). Pilot lights are independent or dependent, as noted. They have silver contacts, which give superior switching performance. Housing is matte black.

Regular Lens 58328 Series These have incandescent illumination and brass blade terminals. The BP kits come with a selection of snap-in lenses. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

Wiring your switch: There are up to 6 terminals on this switch series. Identify each type of switch by matching it with the appropriate wiring diagram in each section. Diagrams represent the switch as seen from the back. Dotted lines indicate the internal connections of the pilot light(s).

LED Wide Lens 58312 Series These have bright LED illumination with high-visibility wrap-around lenses. Corrosion-resisitant nickel-plated brass blade terminals provide good electrical contact. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

Small Lens 56327/58327 Series These are identical to 58238 series with incandescent bulbs, but they have one or two small circular lenses. 56327 series has brass screw terminals, 58327 series has brass blade terminals. For switches without pilot lights see page 11.

Weather-resistant switch provides added safety for boat operators. The lanyard connects the boater to a switch which kills the ignition circuit if the boater falls overboard, or is at an unsafe distance from the controls, thus preventing a dangerous runaway situation. Unlike other devices, the M-597 can be turned on again if need be by a boater other than the operator.

SPST SPDT DPST DPDT SP and DP refer to single pole and double pole, ST and DT refer to single throw and double throw. Pole refers to an independent arrangement of contacts, all connected to a center contact or pivot. SP switches have at least one electrical circuit. DP switches have at least two independent circuits (and act like two identical switches that are mechanically linked). Do not confuse ‘pole’ with ‘terminal’. The DPST switch, for example, has four terminals, but it is a DP, not a 4P switch. Throw refers to the numbers of On positions a switch has. ST switches close at least one circuit at only one position. The other position of the handle is Off. DT switches close at least one circuit in the Up position, as well as the Down position (On-On). How to Identify a 6-terminal switch

How to select the right switch

You can find out the type of rocker or toggle switch by a quick visual inspection.

1. Rocker or Toggle? It’s your choice - Cole Hersee has rockers and toggles available in all electrical configurations, and in different styles.

Look at the back of the switch, where the terminals are. Notice that there are six possible terminal positions.

2. Switch rating: very important

Toggle and rocker switches are designed so that each vertical set of terminals makes up one pole. Pole 1

a) You need to know the voltage of your system (12V or 24V). b) You need to know how much current will be running in the circuit being switched. Always select a switch equal to or greater in amperage to the amperage rating of the circuit in your application. 3. Switch configuration Check out the diagram in this section that explains the difference between single/double pole and single/double throw. Switches are marked SPST, SPDT, DPST or DPDT.

You can see immediately that a switch with three verticallyorganized terminals must be a SPDT. Now check the actuator (rocker or toggle handle) to see if the switch is 2-position or 3-position. If it only has two terminals, it must be a SPST, the simplest of all switch configurations. Notice that the two terminals are organized vertically (never side-by-side). Terminals can be located at 1 and 2, 1 and 3, or 2 and 3. If it has terminals at 1, 3, 4 and 6, it must be a DPST. You can see that it utilizes the left side (pole 1) and right side (pole 2) of the switch — two poles (DP). If it has six terminals, it’s a DPDT. Check the actuator to see if the switch is 2-position or 3-position.

Match the circuit diagram to your needs, or replace an existing switch with one of the same configuration. 4. Waterproof/water-resistant Cole Hersee uses the term water-resistant for marine switches. ‘Waterproof’ properly refers to switches that will be used submerged underwater. Determine how much exposure your switch will receive, and select water-resistant for switches which might receive exposure to salt spray or rain. The international IP rating demotes resistance to ingress of dust or liquid. IP66 is high pressure wash resistant. IP67 is immersible. Many Cole Hersee toggle switches are ‘sealed’, containing 0-rings in the stem of the actuator, and have gaskets to exclude moisture. Others are completely coated in plastic and usually have wire terminals. Such switches are a good choice for use in boats. 5. Terminals Switches come with blade terminals, screw terminals or integral wire terminals. Cole Hersee recommends screw terminals (or wire terminals in a plastic-coated switch) for marine applications.

6. Switches with pilot lights

Many of our switches contain an integral pilot light which can be very helpful, and the lenses are available in different colors. Cole Hersee 58328 Series switches come with a variety of lenses in different colors – you simply snap in the color you want. There’s one more thing to know – illuminated switches come in Dependent or Independent types. With a Dependent switch, the pilot is On when the switch is On, and Off when the switch is Off. The illumination of Independent switches or switch groups is usually controlled by a master switch independent of the circuit that the illuminated switch controls - it can be convenient to have all switches illuminated so that they can be seen in the dark.

A typical 4-stud solenoid

The diagram shows a magnetic coil surrounding a contact plunger. Before energization, the plunger is not electrically connected to the control circuit. When the control circuit is energized, the electromagnetic force induced in the coil attracts the plunger, which moves to close the load circuit. When the control circuit is de-energized, the spring-loaded plunger returns to its normal state and the load circuit is broken. In continuous duty applications, energization of the coil causes heating, therefore the solenoid housing will become warm even in normal operation.

Actuation of the external momentary switch causes current to flow in the solenoid coil, locking the contact in place, and maintaining the load circuit in an On position. A second actuation of the momentary switch releases the plunger, turning the load circuit Off.

Battery Selector & Master Disconnect Switches

Designed for two battery installations where typically one is used for starting, and the other is used for accessory loads. The switch allows batteries (or banks of batteries) to be used separately or combined.

A selector switch allows use of the first battery, the second battery, or both batteries simultaneously. This provides back-up starting power in an emergency. Battery Types Starting Batteries (SLI) SLI - Starting, Lighting, Ignition. These batteries are designed to deliver very high amperage for a short time. They are usually constructed of many thin plates to get the amps out quickly and recharge quickly. While this is a strong point for starting, they are not designed to withstand deep discharge cycles that come with powering engine offloads. Starting batteries survive the longest when they are kept in the 95%+ state of charge. They are very useful when setting up a dual battery bank setup with one bank dedicated to starting, but are not the best choice when using a single battery (or single bank) for starting and powering loads. SLI batteries are rated in two ways: CCA - Cold Cranking Amps: The maximum amperage they can deliver at 0ºF for 30 seconds. MCA or CA - Marine Cranking Amps or Cranking Amps: The same as CCA except at 32ºF (freezing point). Deep Cycle Batteries These batteries are designed to take lower amperage draw over a several hours, even days. They are constructed with fewer thick plates that are designed to give off power, rather than supplying lots of amps quickly. They recover well from deep discharge down to 20% state of charge, but last the longest if allowed to discharge no lower than 50% state of charge.

Deep Cycle batteries are rated in two ways: Amp hours: The total cumulative amps a battery can deliver over a 20 hour period. So if the rating is 100, it can deliver 5 amps for 20 hours before it gets to 10.5V.

Alternator Field Disconnect

Reserve Capacity (RC at 25A): The number of minutes that a fully charged battery can deliver 25A before it reaches 10.5A. RC is the best number to look at, as it is a more realistic measure, and it can be used to compare batteries. Dual Purpose Batteries These batteries are a hybrid between SLI and deep cycle batteries. They have plates that are thicker than in SLI batteries, but thinner than deep cycle. They don’t start as well as a SLI battery and they don’t supply as much power as a deep cycle, but if you only have one battery or battery bank, they are a good compromise. These batteries are frequently listed by both CCA and RC for comparison purposes. Battery Construction While Lithium Ion (LI) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) are commonly used in electronic devices such as laptops and cellphones, and are starting to show up in hybrid vehicles, you still can’t beat lead acid for price/performance combination, and they are the most commonly used type in vehicle applications. Lead-acid batteries are usually one of three types: Flooded, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) or Gel. Flooded batteries are the classic batteries, and they can be purchased as types that are sealed and maintenance-free, or ones that allow you to add water. They are usually the least expensive battery type in a group size. The unsealed units are not spillproof and if tipped over are likely to leak acid. Even the sealed units are more likely to leak than the other types of batteries

AFD is a useful built-in feature that will protect the alternator if the boat operator accidentally turns the switch to Off with the engines running. Battery Selector Switch M-752 has the integral AFD, which is a second switch inside the body of the main switch that is electrically isolated from the power switching circuit. In switch operation the AFD switch closes before the battery switch contacts close, and it opens before they open. It’s connected in the field wire between the voltage regulator and the alternator, and it prevents the alternator from producing power when the AFD switch is open. It protects the diodes inside the alternator, which could be destroyed by the electrical surge if the battery switch is suddenly turned Off when the alternator is still running. Rapid ship item.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries have glass material between the plates that holds the electrolyte. AGM batteries (as well as Gel batteries) will not leak acid if broken. AGM batteries are no-maintenance, and are sealed against fumes, hydrogen, leakage, or non-spilling even if they are broken. They can survive most freezes. AGM batteries are "recombinant"; which means the oxygen and hydrogen recombine in the battery and prevent the loss of water through electrolysis. The recombining is highly efficient, so almost no water is lost. AGM batteries self-discharge slowly (from 1% to 3% per month), so they can sit in storage for much longer periods without charging. The plates in AGM's are closely packed and firmly mounted, and will withstand shock and vibration better than standard batteries. Gel Batteries are an adaptation of the flooded lead acid battery. A gelling agent is added to the electrolyte to decrease motion inside the battery case. Many gel batteries are VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) batteries and use one-way valves in place of open vents. This helps the gases to recombine into water in the battery. "Gel Cell" batteries are non-spillable even if they are broken. Gel cells must be charged at a lower voltage than flooded or AGM, to prevent excess gas from damaging the cells. Rapid charging of a Gel Battery with a conventional charger may cause irreparable damage!

Continuous: This is the rating that is meant to indicate what the device can handle forever with no interruption. It is usually measured as the amperage that a device can handle for one hour without exceeding the maximum allowed temperature rise at the terminals. Continuous rated switches may be used as intermittent switches. Intermittent: This is the amount of current the switch can handle for 5 minutes with the same temperature rise as above. Intermittent rating of a switch is always higher than continuous rating. Intermittent rated switches may not be used as continuous rated switches.

If you leave a fully charged battery in an inactive boat, it could be dead in as little as two months. Any minor breakdown in insulation in the boat’s electrical system can result in the same problem. Insulation degradation can occur as a result of abrasion or infiltration of contaminants such as seawater, or from the use of test prods. Apart from the disappointment and inconvenience, there are two very important reasons to avoid complete battery discharge. First, contaminants can crystallize on the battery plates, and the battery will no longer hold a full charge – an irreversible process. The second problem occurs with cold temperatures. When a battery is fully charged, its electrolyte freezes at -83ºF (-64ºC), but when it’s discharged it freezes at a higher temperature closer to 32ºF (0ºC). Resulting ice buildup can break intercell connections or even crack the case. A good way to prevent a dead battery is to fully charge it, then disconnect the ground cable. In this state the battery can hold a charge for about a year. This procedure is highly recommended when a boat is stored, but it is inconvenient for short term storage. Installation of a Cole Hersee Master Disconnect or a SureStartTM Low Voltage Disconnect will prevent problems.

Today’s boats all have electronics, and although they require only a very small amount of current to maintain their memory, over time that’s enough to kill a battery.

Brackets & Busbars

Apart from the disappointment and inconvenience, there are two very important reasons to avoid complete battery discharge.

Nylon Brackets and Busbars Brackets in a range from 4-gang to 10 gang conveniently house and organize the stud-type circuit breakers and can be used with slotted busbars from 2-gang to 12-gang to create a variety of circuitries.

First, contaminants can crystallize on the battery plates, and the battery will no longer hold a full charge – an irreversible process. The second problem occurs with cold temperatures. When a battery is fully charged, its electrolyte freezes at -83ºF (-64ºC), but when it’s discharged it freezes at a higher temperature closer to 32ºF (0ºC). Resulting ice buildup can break intercell connections or even crack the case. A good way to prevent a dead battery is to fully charge it, then disconnect the ground cable. In this state the battery can hold a charge for about a year. This procedure is highly recommended when a boat is stored, but it is inconvenient for short term storage. Installation of a Cole Hersee Master Disconnect or a SureStartTM Low Voltage Disconnect will prevent problems.

Recommended Wire Sizes Fire can result when a wire gets overheated because there's too much current flowing through it. It is important to use the correct wire size that's appropriate to the amperage and length of the wire that you're using. Use the wire rating next above the amperage needed. Both fuses and ciruit breakers stop dangerous overcurrent by rapidly shutting down an overloaded circuit. Fuses are one-use devies; circuit breakers can be re-set.
