Foods That Cause Heartburn - Now is the Right Time to Know the Foods That Cause Heartburn

Heartburn occurs when the passage from your esophagus to your stomach, relaxes inappropriately and food comes back upward, or when the acid produces by the stomach is refluxed into the esophagus. This passage between the stomach and the esophagus is called lower esophageal sphincter. This passageway can also be weakened by intake of certain foods. Since the muscular tube i.e. the esophagus and the stomach are part of digestive system, the food we eat plays an important role in heartburn. So the purpose of the article is to help you to know about the foods that cause heartburn. This helps us in avoiding the cause of the heartburn which in turn prevents heartburn in our body. Some foods can cause heartburn and some can increase the severity of it. Such foods which directly or indirectly cause heartburn are listed below: 

Fruits such as orange juice, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, lemon, lemonade cause the passage between the esophagus and stomach to relax, which may lead to heartburn.

Vegetables that can cause heartburn are French fries, raw onion, tomato.

High fat meats like ground beef, chuck, marbled sirloin, chicken nuggets, Buffalo wings will stimulate heartburn.

Sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cheese are some of the dairy products that increase heartburn.

Beverages are the major causes for acid flux namely liquor, wine, coffee and tea.

Apart from the above mentioned foods, fats, oils, sweets and deserts are other foods that cause heartburn.

Other foods that cause heartburn are chocolate, peppermint, vinegar, garlic and certain spices.

It is not only the type of food you have, but the time and quantity of food had by you plays a major role. Apart from the foods, the major thing that has to be taken into account is the quantity of the food that has been consumed by you. Some of the above mentioned foods are not major causes for heartburn, unless it is consumed more. Another thing is the time at which you have dinner at night and the amount you eat at that time of the day. Eating more at night can cause night time heartburn. You should not have your dinner exactly at the bed time. You can also go for medicines for avoiding heartburn. If you get frequent heartburn, the best option is to consult a physician who will guide you in relieving from heartburn.
