“To get through adversity, it just takes work ethic and fire in your belly.” I am not unique. Over 15,000 Cuban kids were separated from their parents and came here when I did. It was terrible, but had I stayed in Cuba, had my mother not made the ultimate sacrifice and sent me unaccompanied to the U.S., I don’t know what would have become of me. Needless to say, I wouldn’t be nearly as successful. My Miami stor y isn’t about any thing I’ve done. It’s about a city that embraced me. It’s about a community that bounces back and teaches its residents to do the same. It’s about our united desire to thrive … that’s what makes us Miamians.

editor’s letter

T

his is the fourth Home & Design issue I’ve edited at INDULGE, and I learn something each time: a tree-lined neighborhood I hadn’t yet discovered, an Italian house-painting technique I have tucked away for our dream home, the stark difference between a welllighted room and one that is not. Also, each time, I develop an overwhelming feeling of, I want that home. Both of those traditions continued through this issue. I struggle to keep a few pots of herbs and a small Key lime tree alive on my balcony, so I am in awe at the lush, living landscapes created by our cover star, Fernando Wong (p. 102). I also am in awe of Wong’s American Dream story, which is so smartly told by writer Susannah Nesmith, an amateur gardener herself. Prediction: You’re going to be hearing a lot about Wong in the coming months, not only for his breathtaking work at the new Four Seasons at The Surf Club and his serene sculpture garden at the forthcoming Institute of Contemporary Art, but as the landscape designer of the moment. I also learned a thing or two about the arts of perseverance and craftsmanship Evan S. Benn from Edie Laquer, whose grand St. Regis Bal Harbour condo has been the object of Editor in Chief my “I want that home” envy since I first laid eyes on it (p. 94). Immaculate marble surfaces. Rich leather furniture. A sunlight-drenched kitchen in the sky. An adorably spoiled dog. It’s the sort of home that befits Laquer, a groundbreaking Miami real estate powerhouse who built her legacy in a male-dominated industry. “It’s a tough business,” she explained to writer Lydia Martin, “but it’s tougher when you’re the only woman in a game of powerful men.” On the list of enviable homes, the one where we photographed architect Ralph Choeff, pioneer of the tropicalmodern aesthetic, is high up there (p. 56). And I wouldn’t mind putting in an extended stay at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, wasting away the days in a Trina Turk-designed pool cabana and singing away the nights in Nokku, the karaoke bar hidden within modern Japanese restaurant Monkitail. The newly renovated Diplomat is our Staycation feature this issue (p. 74). Just before this issue’s release, we learned that INDULGE is a finalist in three editorial categories of the Florida Magazine Association’s 2017 Charlie Awards: Best Column Writing, Best Photograph and Best Social Media. Winners are announced in mid-August at a gala at The Ritz-Carlton Naples. We’re honored to be recognized, and we thank you for your continued support. Together, we’ll keep discovering, we’ll keep learning, and we’ll keep being in awe of the people and places who make us fortunate to call Miami home.

from the publisher

H

ome is where the heart is.” It’s a sentimental phrase commonly used to describe one’s physical abode, city or birthplace. This one simple word, home, can also transcend its basic definition to tell a more layered and meaningful story. Our home is where I happily head to after a hard day’s work. Our big, comfy couch beckons me to relax, while our collection of art pieces reminds me of all the faraway places we’ve explored. Home is where our garden thrives on the abundance of summer rain, despite my lack of a green thumb. This inimitable sense of home is one we explore in this Home & Design issue of INDULGE. When I first saw our cover photo of Fernando Wong, I immediately knew he was home — or feeling at home. This image calls to mind a personal connection to his craft and a celebration of his journey to date — a state of pure contentment. Another example of home is celebrating all that is South Florida, beautifully blending living with giving. Udonis Haslem shows us how he does it in My 305 Style (p. 36). It’s a fun opportunity to check out this Miami Heat captain’s go-to favorites, adding his signature Lesley DeCanio sneakers to your holiday must-haves list and savoring his very own Starbucks brew, the intriguingly named UD Dirty Chai. In our Pour feature (p. 64), we’ve sourced a selection of Bloody Marys as unique as the establishments and bartenders creating them. Growing up around Cuba Libres and Mojitos, I only began to appreciate this peppery concoction when I traveled with my mother-in-law. Initially happy with the airline version, she quickly embraced the best of South Florida’s many diverse recipes, which she shared with me. I now heartily enjoy and even crave them, with the added charm of always reminding me of her — embellished and spicy. This fall, calendar in time to try all 16 of our suggestions, beginning in Brickell at the new Arketekt and then Baby Jane (theirs is green!). End at the Burgundy Bar in Key West — it’s so worth the drive. In Dish (p. 61), we point you to six delectable restaurants — all of them in South Miami-Dade, where many of us live, including me. Where can you find a mix of Cuban, Peruvian and Korean influences? Head to Finka Table & Tap and splurge on the hogfish, fresh from our Florida Keys. If contemporary Chinese is what you long for, you’ll want to thank Heath Porter and Craig DeWald for listening to South Miami dwellers and bringing us their new No Name Chinese. Enjoy the dumplings at the bar, where bartender Sarina will guide you through creative wine pairings. And if your tastebuds are nudging you for exotic flavors grown locally, make a reservation at Ghee Indian Kitchen in Downtown Dadeland. Whatever you choose there, be sure to add a side of chef Niven Patel’s signature green millet, a perfect complement to your meal. With all of these amazing indulgences in our own backyard, it’s hard to imagine carving out time to explore other worldly experiences. That is, until you read our Amenity feature by Nicole Martinez (p. 78), highlighting luxury travel concierges who can unlock magical experiences for you in foreign lands. Sign me up for breakfast atop the Arc de Triomphe — maybe with a side of millet. And with that, I hope you enjoy this Home & Design issue from wherever you are or whatever place evokes home for you.

behind the scenes At INDULGE, we start our issue-planning with big ideas. That leads to us asking for a lot from our subjects: Can we see your home? Can we dress you up? Can you step outside your comfort zone and trust us to make you look your best? For those who answer with an enthusiastic Yes!, the journey through fittings, photo shoots and interviews is almost as much fun as the destination: the finished, polished magazine you’re holding right now. Here’s a glimpse at how some of this issue came together. — EVAN S. BENN

Rebecca Fishman Lipsey became a master of the funny face during a photo session at Blind Light Studio for this issue’s Rainmaker profile. Nick Garcia’s lens captures her in a genuine LOL moment.

Channeling his inner Eddie Van Halen, real estate developer Diego Lowenstein goes ahead and jumps, getting some serious air for his photo session on the roof of his Lincoln Road office building. Lowenstein leapt about a dozen times before Felipe Cuevas caught the perfect shot.

Photography assistant Ricardo Mestre and makeup artist Andrea Echavarria work on landscape architect Fernando Wong outside the Four Seasons in Surfside. The 95-degree morning was mostly overcast, so photographer Nick Garcia, standing on a ladder, waited for breaks in the clouds to shoot Wong under splashes of sunshine.

Photographer Ken Hayden, stylist Elysze Held and makeup artist Rory Lee break for a moment during our all-day feature shoot at Edie Laquer’s St. Regis Bal Harbour condo. Held pulled tens of thousands of dollars of couture fashion and accessories; Hayden returned to Laquer’s home several times for the right mix of interior and portrait shots.

Following the exhibition of his multimillion-dollar collection during Art Basel, legendary Spanish artist Antonio Domínguez de Haro has opened his first U.S. art gallery, on the seventh floor of Four Seasons Miami in Brickell. The artist, who has an avenue named for him in Granada, has been painting for more than 70 years, capturing the beauty and lyricism of the flora and fauna of the deep seas. Visitors can also view two of Domínguez de Haro’s oversize paintings in the Four Seasons lobby. 1435 Brickell Avenue, Miami; fourseasons.com/miami.

BLACK BOOK

Giorgio Armani’s Tim Quinn is one of the most sought-after makeup artists in the world. He masterminds the makeup looks for Armani runway shows, and he travels the globe to prep stars like Victoria Beckham and Drew Barrymore for the red carpet. But the best thing about him is his love for giving free department-store makeovers, especially in Miami (follow him at @timquinnbeauty to keep up). “I like doing runway and red carpet and editorial, but the only way I get to see what real women are doing and wearing is by working with them,” Quinn said. “Miami reminds me of Italy, where generations of women shop together. You don’t get that backstage at a runway show.” He shares his Miami musts with INDULGE:

HOMME IMPROVEMENT For men in need of a straightrazor shave and haircut, a two-block stretch of Coral Gables is their new siren song.

GIORGIO ARMANI CREMA NUDA “In humidity, matte foundation looks strange. Instead, use this light, perfecting CC cream: It has a blurring effect, leaving skin really pretty and fresh.” giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com.

ST. REGIS BAL HARBOUR “When I go to the beach, I go for the day. This one’s super private and the setup feels European: They have the proper chairs, and you can get lunch.” stregisbalharbour.com.

SOLE MATE

STUBBS & WOOTTON HANDMADE SLIPPERS “My favorite accessories. They’re so whimsical, and a great conversation-starter. I even wear the canvas version to the beach.” stubbsandwootton.com.

SWIPE RIGHT

GIORGIO ARMANI LIP MAGNET LIQUID LIPSTICK “I love a vibrant lip for Miami. This formula truly lasts for eight hours but isn’t drying, and the colors are gorgeous.” giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com.

GLOW-GETTER

HAMPTON SUN SUNLESS TANNING GEL “The best formula — even the tanning butler at the Delano uses this line. The scent’s based on the privet bloom from the Hamptons, so it smells really clean.” hamptonsuncare.com.

LOCK SMITHS

DUBER OSORIO AND JOHN MEJIA “My go-tos for hair. They really know what they’re doing. Duber (left) and I met while working with Megan Fox, who is a perfectionist about hair and makeup.” oribe.com.

POWER LUNCH CARPACCIO “The salmon carpaccio with arugula salad is the healthiest, most delicious lunch on earth. Plus, excellent people-watching.” carpaccioatbalharbour.com.

Oprah-Approved Facials Luxury spa and beauty chain Bluemercury has made its long-awaited debut in Miami Beach (1109 Lincoln Road; bluemercury.com), and husband-and-wife owners Barry and Marla Beck are treating it like an idea lab of sorts. Customers are encouraged to experiment with classic products like Phytodéfrisant Botanical Straightening Balm and m-61 PowerGlow Facial Peels as well as with new lines that come into the store daily. “We’d rather have someone leave with a bag of samples than ever leave with a wrong product,” Barry Beck said. Bluemercury takes pride in offering honest expert advice in a space that feels like a friendly neighborhood pharmacy. Its beauty advisers aren’t paid on commission, and they’re trained to be knowledgable about all of the brands the store carries. Need sunscreen that doesn’t feel heavy? Hair spray that won’t turn sticky outside? Something to clear up that blemish before a big gala? They’ve got you covered. For next-level skincare, turn to one of the spa practitioners in the back: Oprah has credited Bluemercury with giving some of the best facials in America.

TO BASICS

Neushop is the kind of concept that would be a perfect fit in Wynwood or South Beach. But the owners chose downtown Miami, betting on its cultural transformation.

T

he word “basic” gets a bad rap. Often used to describe the mundane and unoriginal, you hear it in sentences like, “Let’s just get the basic cable package,” or, “With all the gourmet pizza places out there, you picked here? It’s so basic.” But Neushop is reclaiming basic and bringing it back to its intended meaning: elemental and essential. Take, for example, its line of signature shirts made from 100-percent Peruvian-grown Tangüis cotton that come in nine styles and 48 colors for men and women. They’re well-made, exquisitely soft and — unlike many “designer” T-shirts — reasonably priced. “We’ve always been about basics, but now so many are priced as luxury objects and not as everyday objects,” said Nicolas Delgado Alcega, 23, who runs Neushop. “It becomes difficult to say, ‘I’m going to wear this every day,’ because it’s a price point that doesn’t work with the nature of the product.” SHOP, MEET, THINK Located along a historic stretch of downtown Miami, Neushop is a multiuse space with a retail component and an architecture/design studio. It also serves as a hub for creative thinkers and community events. Delgado Alcega, who recently graduated from the University of Miami’s School of Architecture, began Neushop as an online clothing retailer several years ago. Over time, it dovetailed with a design firm and clothingmanufacturing brand called Neutroni that his parents, Kika Alcega and Raúl Delgado, started in Venezuela. As their online orders grew, so did their need for a larger fulfillment center and physical storefront, where they could display clothing, accessories and home décor from global designers. Rather than settle for a small and overpriced space in a more-established neighborhood like Wynwood or South Beach, they picked an area where they saw untapped potential. “We came to downtown and saw that people were doing something,” Delgado Alcega said. “People were creating a scene from the street and not from a development perspective. That’s the opposite of what normally happens in Miami: The developer pushes the street scene. But here, the street scene was pushing the change in the neighborhood.” A NEW DOWNTOWN The Langford, Supply & Advise, Shoe Gallery, Niu Kitchen, Second Vintage Miami — the businesses revitalizing downtown are infusing the community with culture and personality. Neushop takes it a step further by hosting frequent lectures, gatherings, pop-ups and workshops on architecture, design, fashion, mindfulness and more. Standing in Neushop, it’s hard to imagine that just more than a year ago, this deconstructed space was a Radio Shack. Delgado Alcega and his team at Studio Miami, a collective of architecture students and recent graduates who focus on urban revitalization projects (and who also happen to work out of Neushop’s lobby), chipped away at the concrete walls, the Armstrong ceiling tiles, and the carpet flooring of the Schultze & Weaver-designed edifice. They discovered artfully withered coffered ceilings, terra cotta tiles and exposed brick. Peeling away the layers, they revealed its original version of basic. Rebecca Fishman Lipsey

She’s an educator, a leader, a visionary, a consultant and a community-builder. See what the founder and CEO of Radical Partners loves about Miami, apartment living and ‘ridiculous shoes.’

‘We look for people who are doing something that is show-stopping and eye-opening.’ VITALS 36. Founder and CEO of Radical Partners, a startup accelerator and management consulting agency working exclusively with social-impact entrepreneurs. Rebecca Fishman grew up in Fairlawn, New Jersey, the second-oldest of four siblings; mom was a computer programmer, and dad, a lawyer. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in communications and psychology, then she followed her college sweetheart and now-husband, Jay, to Cleveland. They moved to New York, where Rebecca Fishman Lipsey earned a master’s degree in education and taught at a public school in Harlem through Teach for America. She came to Miami as Teach for America’s executive director here in 2008, bringing in more than $22 million in her four-year tenure. In 2013, Governor Rick Scott gave her a seat on the state Board of Education, making her the youngest person appointed to the post. Fishman Lipsey founded Radical Partners in 2012, helping scores of Miami entrepreneurs scale their ventures and engineering some of the most engaging community-wide social initiatives, like Public Transit Day and 100 Great Ideas. The Miami Foundation recently awarded Fishman Lipsey with its Ruth Shack Leadership Award. She and Jay live in Aventura and have two sons: Andrew, 6, and Noah, 3. MOTIVATED TO LEARN “I’m the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, so I grew up learning from people who developed a sense of urgency to give back and protect the social infrastructure of their communities. My grandmother instilled in me that you must invest in your education, because you can take that with you.” CONNECTING COMMUNITIES “In Miami, I began getting together with people to share some of the resources that had supported me and my work. I thought, ‘Instead of me doing this with individuals, what would happen if I brought three executive directors into a room together? Ten executive directors into a room together?’ And that kind of birthed Radical Partners.” HOW IT WORKS “We look for people in South Florida who have identified an issue and are doing something that is show-stopping, eye-opening and has real promise. Then, over the course of three months, we immerse together. We coach them individually and we coach as a whole group. We focus on pitch practice, fundraising strategy, branding, team growth, time management, executive management skills and long-term vision.”

MICRO AND MACRO ECONOMICS “I’m investing in finding great leaders while also investing in rallying the masses to learn about the issues that matter. I think a lot of people don’t realize their power and the opportunities they have. I like to engage people and help them find avenues for their voices to be heard.” THINK OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE “With social media today, I feel like I am surrounded by messages that align with my interests and beliefs. More and more, people are being less tolerant of those who are not like them. I thought, ‘What could we do to engage tens of thousands of people in Miami to actively build a relationship across lines of difference?’ So we launched 10 Days of Connection, where we encouraged people of all ages to step outside their comfort zones and learn about someone who is different.” BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED “If you’re not willing to take a gamble on yourself, why should anybody else?” SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW “After college, I thought that I was going to move to Cleveland and become a wedding singer. I had even lined up my first gig!” GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE “Shoes! Something stuck with me about the challenge of being feminine in a leadership role, and I decided I need to have a flair. I’m often going to be the only woman in a room, and I’m often going to be in situations where I feel like I need to masculinize in some way in order to be at bat. I decided that my accessory of choice was going to be ridiculous shoes.” AT HOME “I’m an apartment gal. I love apartment living. I like the noise and the energy. Once I moved to New York and felt the energy of a city, I fell in love with it. We try to have fun in our space and not take ourselves too seriously.” IN MIAMI “It took me a hot second to find my way here. But I’ve seen a massive evolution over the past several years. We have exploded with innovators who are trying to strengthen the city. They are speaking a shared language, and they know each other and support each other.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

T

wo years ago this summer, Andrew Pompa made the decision to walk away from his high-paying, wellrespected job at Akerman, the kind of gig coveted by upwardly mobile young lawyers across the country. He wasn’t sure what was next — maybe he’d work with nonprofits, or for a local foundation or cultural institution — but he was fairly sure that telling his boss that he wanted out would be the end of his law career. Instead, Akerman chairman and CEO Andrew Smulian asked a question that gave Pompa a reason to stay: “What about creating a job that benefits the community and the firm?”

{ INNOVATOR }

Andrew Pompa

He was prepared to quit his corporate-law job to help steer nonprofits. Then a funny thing happened.

EMERGING SPIRIT From New York, Pompa first visited Miami during college, a spring-break kid subsisting on Subway sandwiches during the day and South Beach parties at night. He came permanently in 2011, when his dermatologist wife, Dr. Adriane Pompa, began her residency at Jackson. Pompa landed at Akerman and figured he’d follow the traditional corporate-law track: grinding it out as an associate, someday earning a spot among the partners, and repping the kings of corporate. Pompa soon found himself fascinated by Miami’s emerging spirit. “I was just blown away by how accessible the city was and how much excitement there is for what’s going on,” said Pompa, now 33. “The city is like a teenager. Yes, it makes mistakes, but there’s also so much energy.”

‘Miami is like a teenager. Yes, it makes mistakes, but there’s so much energy.’ He remembers being in New York, when he’d call the symphony or some other established nonprofit and not even get a call back. In Miami, he called the New World Symphony and was asked when he could come by for a visit. He started getting involved in more nonprofits, and he decided it’s what he wanted to do every day. WORKING TOGETHER With Smulian’s blessing, Pompa designed a position for himself as part of the firm’s entrepreneur-based initiative called AkermanIN that is unlike what most envision when they think of legal work. Pompa’s office is in the Cambridge Innovation Center co-working space in downtown Miami. He helps Miami startups understand legal challenges they might face. He explains the nuances of intellectual property to computer coders. He assists in the socialimpact work being led by Rebecca Fishman Lipsey at Radical Partners. And he pitches in for community- and cultural-based nonprofits like Nu Deco Ensemble and Miami Science Barge. Sure, helping young entrepreneurs who might be Miami’s next champions of industry is a smart long-term play for Akerman. But two years into his new gig, and Pompa says the firm hasn’t once pressured him about billable hours or generating revenue. “Every day I’m like, ‘This is exciting,’” Pompa said. “Instead of just writing a check to a foundation, I’m asking, ‘How do we roll up our sleeves and work together with the community?’” WORDS BY ERIC BARTON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

Tech or treat: She made a name for herself selling gourmet ice pops. Now she’s found a sweet spot helping others realize their dreams.

J

umpstarting a city’s tech industry, winning a boatload of awards before the age of 34, writing books and captivating audiences on the national speaking circuit are all well and good. But if you really want to get people’s attention, give them something sweet. Just ask Felecia Hatcher, who co-founded Feverish Ice Cream and Gourmet Pops in 2008 with her husband, Derick Pearson. “Feverish put me on the map and got me a lot of media attention, like from theToday show,” said Hatcher, who worked in tech and marketing before pioneering the popsicle trend in Miami. “I always tell people that they should be more surprised that I was ever in the food business than my other careers.” CONNECTING COMMUNITIES Her surname couldn’t be more apropos, because the natural-born entrepreneur is always hatching up

some idea. Hatcher sold Feverish two years ago to make room on her plate for new endeavors. Figuring her employees wouldn’t be in pops forever, she and Pearson launched Code Fever Miami in 2012 to teach minorities marketable tech and business skills to earn a living for the long haul. Parents immediately flooded the program with requests. About 80 young people, 60 more than Hatcher had anticipated, enrolled in the inaugural workshop. The program teaches them to code and introduces them to venture capitalists to learn about startups and funding. Hatcher says there is an untapped fountain of entrepreneurial interest, talent and ideas within minority communities, which she describes as innovation deserts. “Even if the money is available, we aren’t seeing enough resource magnetism and deal flow in minority areas,” she said. “Look at Airbnb; immigrant populations have been

offering a similar channel for a while. Or Little Haiti’s jitney taxis, a utility that’s the same as uberPOOL. What if they’d had the right resources to solve the global transportation problem a long time ago?” NEW INNOVATIONS Hatcher has several initiatives in motion to level the playing field. In 2014 she and Pearson created the first Black Tech Week, connecting startups and professionals in science, technology, engineering and math with dozens of expert speakers and mentors. This year’s conference, October 2-7, should coincide with the opening of Hatcher’s latest project: Tribe, a 10,000-square-foot coworking space in Overtown. The multipurpose hub will house a maker lab, accelerator incubator, classrooms, pop-up shops and other events. Hatcher also is pushing for local governments to establish innovation

funds, similar to ones in minorityconcentrated cities like Atlanta and Detroit. The goal, she said, is for startup companies to be less reliant on nonprofits like the Knight Foundation, which supports Code Fever and Black Tech Week. “Startups usually get their first round of funding from friends and family, but what if your circle can only afford to give a round of applause?” Growing up, Hatcher was obsessed with the TV show MacGyver, which became synonymous with overcoming insurmountable situations with simple tools. That same little kid made a small fortune selling Girl Scout cookies in her mom’s workplace and the tax collector’s office, and went on to make artisan popsicles the coolest thing in South Florida. Hatcher has what it takes to make Miami’s tech scene blast off. WORDS BY REBECCA KLEINMAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Diego Lowenstein The CEO of Lionstone Development has an explorer’s wanderlust, a rock star’s passion for music and a hotelier’s eye for hospitality.

L

ionstone Development has been a staple in the Miami hospitality scene for five decades, but building luxury hotels and condos was never really part of the plan. After Diego Lowenstein’s grandfather escaped Nazi Germany and resettled in Argentina, the family patriarch created a flourishing beef business. He expanded the family’s holdings in 1966 with the purchase of the White House Hotel in South Beach. That deal sparked a hospitality and residential development business that’s now in its third generation, with Lowenstein in his 15th year as CEO. “Our hotel business started a little by chance and not by design,” Lowenstein, 49, said from his sunny Lincoln Road corner office, surrounded by lion figurines and beaming with pride as he retells his family’s story. “Not a lot of families can say they’ve been in Miami for 50 years. It’s a testament to our values and our commitment to the market through good times and bad.”

REACHING FOR THE TOP Lionstone Development has helped shape Miami’s skyline and has restored some of the city’s most beloved buildings, gifting them back the grandeur they once embodied.

INDULGE | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 | miamiindulge.com

The company brought us the luxe Epic Hotel & Residences, built on the historic site of the Dupont Plaza. Lionstone also has cultivated a strong relationship with the Ritz-Carlton brand, restoring and remodeling the original 1953 DiLido Hotel into The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach and renovating and rebranding One Bal Harbour Resort & Spa into the new Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour.

‘Music fulfills me. It’s a great way to de-stress.‛ Outside of Miami, Lionstone’s interests include three hotels and two casinos in Curaçao, a hotel in Aruba, and a future development in Puerto Rico. Lionstone also has partnered with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group to establish Virgin Hotels in Chicago, New York and beyond. People in the hospitality industry must adapt to technology and be prepared to meet the expectations of millennials, Lowenstein said. “In the future, it’s going to be less about the brand and more about guest experiences.”

A few main concepts will remain, he said, including comfort, cleanliness, aesthetics — and community involvement. Lionstone Development partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Miami to engage with the city’s next generation. PERSONAL TOUCHES At his home in Coral Gables, which he designed with his wife, Gisela, Lowenstein has borrowed a few design cues from his work, utilizing hotel sofas and fixtures as part of the décor. “I take inspiration from great designers and what they have done,” Lowenstein said. “A home is a little hotel. It has to be functional, pleasing and evoke a sense of self.” But Lowenstein also relishes being outside of his home or office. He skis. He tinkers with cars. He travels, having visited more than 100 countries and hoping to hit Mongolia or Madagascar next year, for his 50th birthday. And he rocks. Lowenstein composes music and plays guitar in a Latin rock band, Pampa y La Vía. “It’s not all about work,” he said. “It’s about balance and enjoying life. Music is an important part of my life. It fulfills me, and it’s a great way to de-stress.” WORDS BY CHRISTIE GALEANO-DEMOTT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

{ ARCHITECT }

Ralph Choeff

Miami’s maven of tropical-modern design finds peace in coastal living.

‘Because of our climate, our views, you can literally live like this all year.’

R

alph Choeff is seated on a creamy, plush Minotti sofa inside a 10,500-square-foot, seven-bedroom, sevenbath spec home, known as Casa Ischia, that he designed on Miami Beach’s Hibiscus Island. He wears a bespoke navy Tom James suit with an open white-collared dress shirt and speaks in that self-assured, clipped manner characteristic of a Brooklyn native. “What I want to do is, I want to open all of this up for you because — I’ll blow your mind,” he said, springing to his feet. He darts toward a wall of pocketing sliding glass doors that run along the home’s southern perimeter, revealing panoramic views of Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami’s skyline. “You cannot imagine, sitting here, what this space transforms into,”

he said, sliding each of the living room’s eight glass panels into one another, completely removing the barrier between outside and in. The home’s ipe wood floors give way to the limestone pool deck. The glittering blue mosaic, wet-edge infinity pool does just what its name suggests, flowing seamlessly into the bay. PART OF ARCHITECTURE It’s about an hour before sunset. Miami’s blue skies are stitched in a soft muslin of clouds casting a hazy, pre-twilight glow onto the bay. This view was mesmerizing before opening the doors. Now, there’s a palpable peaceful feeling of floating with the current and the bay breeze. “You become part of the architecture of Miami,” Choeff said. “You really have to experience it to understand it.” This is what Miami’s tropical modern architecture is all about.

Choeff, 61, principal at Choeff Levy Fischman Architecture + Design, has spent the past three decades perfecting the style for discerning and high-profile clients, including Alex Rodriguez and his Coral Gables home. The style combines the clean lines and sharp angles of midcentury modern architecture with tropical wood, stone and stucco indigenous to Miami. “It’s very conducive to South Florida living because of our surroundings,” Choeff said. “Our climate, our views — you can literally live like this all year.” LIVING WITH WATER Choeff’s high-end clientele clamors for tropical modern homes with outdoor summer kitchens, oversized spa-like bathrooms that open to the outside, multiple lounging areas, mini master suites for guests,

custom closets and smart technology that allows them to control everything from home security and lighting to entertainment from a central wireless device. When asked about the future of Miami’s architecture and design, Choeff’s tune switches from aesthetics to pragmatism: “If I see a future in architecture, it’s how to deal with climate change, global warming and sea-level rise,” he said. “The architects have got to be on the forefront of this solution, along with the scientists. How will the homes be built higher? What ideas do architects have for the water flowing through the house that’s going to come in? Living higher, living differently. It’s not just putting barriers up to stop the water. It’s how to live with the water, as well.” WORDS BY SHAYNE BENOWITZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

SOUTHERN A SPLURGES We visited six new and classic restaurants, all located south of the Dolphin Expressway, and ordered the most expensive things on the menu.

FELIPE CUEVAS

Hank & Harry’s Deli, coming soon to South Miami, piles a 1/2-pound each of corned beef and pastrami on rye bread with mustard for its Combo Pounder sandwich.

s Miami’s dining map continues to expand beyond South Beach, Brickell and Wynwood, the sprawling swath of South Miami-Dade — where many would argue the real locals live — has plenty of knockout restaurants. And in true Magic City fashion, there’s a little something for everyone, from a locally owned Jewish deli in South Miami to a rising-star chef’s new Indian restaurant in Kendall. Here are six of our favorite spots, and the priciest dishes they serve. HANK & HARRY’S DELI South Miami Hank & Harry’s immediately charmed locals and visitors when it opened off Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road last year. The New York-style deli is opening a second, larger location this month in South Miami. Co-founded by Richard Booth and Buzzy Sklar, who also opened Sliderz restaurants together, the friendly Hank & Harry’s has gained a following for its deli classics: egg-salad sandwiches, bagels with cream cheese, split-pea soup, corned beef, brisket, black-andwhite cookies and more. The menu tops out at $23.95, which gets you a Combo Pounder: a 1/2-pound each of two different deli meats, piled high on a triple-decker sandwich. Sklar recommends getting hot corned beef and pastrami as your meat choices. “If you picture those giant sandwiches in New York delis, this is even better,” Sklar said. “We cut the meats right to order, and it comes with coleslaw and a half-sour pickle. Get it with one of our potato knishes and a Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry soda, and, trust me, you’ve had a real deli experience.” 5958 South Dixie Highway, South Miami; handhdeli.com.

the life Clockwise from far left: Chef Jan Jorgensen’s Fire-Roasted Branzino at Two Chefs is served with duck-confit onions and fingerling potatoes; the Catula Filet at Café Catula is stuffed with goat cheese and roasted peppers; Finka Table & Tap’s whole Hogfish dish is sourced fresh from the Keys.

NO NAME CHINESE South Miami Heath Porter and Craig DeWald, the talented duo behind Uvaggio in Coral Gables, have opened the Asian restaurant South Miami-Dade has been waiting for. No Name Chinese in South Miami serves wine on tap and uses herbs from Pinecrest Gardens in its daily tea program, part of its neighborhood appeal. “Some of our favorite customers, who are now our partners, came to us wanting a place to get good Chinese food, like in New York,” DeWald said. “We loved the idea. And, of course, we wanted to pair it with a great wine list, like at Uvaggio.” The priciest menu item is Black Angus Grilled Tenderloin “Au Poivre,” at $28. The dish replaces traditional black pepper with Sichuan peppercorn, adding a hit of Shaoxing rice wine and a side of roasted local vegetables. It’s been flying out of the kitchen since No Name opened in late May. “If it were me, I’d pair it with a really peppery red,” DeWald said. 7400 Southwest 57th Court, South Miami; 786-577-0734; nonamechinese.com.

CAFÉ CATULA Kendall Hidden in a medical office building just off Sunset Drive and Galloway Road, Café Catula is part art gallery, part restaurant. Owned by husbandand-wife team Saul and Leida Hernandez, Catula features live music most nights and a partnership with Cuban artist Uldis Lopez that allows the Hernandezes to curate the Catula Collection of for-sale fine paintings and sculptures. The restaurant’s international menu rivals the art collection in terms of crowd-pleasers. From the Chef Classics selections, the $39 Catula Filet is the most expensive, and for good reason. “It’s one of our signature dishes,” Saul Hernandez said. “We take a center-cut filet mignon, stuff it with goat cheese and roasted red peppers, and top it with roasted garlic, rosemary and a wine sauce. To round out the flavors on the plate, it’s served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. With the ambiance here, a hearty, flavorful dish like this just works.” 7190 Southwest 87th Avenue, Miami; 305-720-2122; cafecatula.com. FINKA TABLE & TAP West Kendall Finka recently celebrated its third anniversary, but it has felt like a longtime part of West Kendall’s cultural fabric since the day it opened. Chef-owner Eileen Andrade’s Cuban-Peruvian-Korean menu has evolved into its own delicious identity. Take the $36 Hogfish, for example. GHEE INDIAN KITCHEN Kendall The hotly anticipated Ghee Indian Kitchen in Downtown Dadeland opened to rave reviews this summer. With a name that translates to “pure,” Ghee is where you’ll find a fresh, modern twist on Indian classics. Chef and owner Niven Patel says he intends for his dishes to be shared, family-style, allowing diners to sample many flavors. As a result, prices are low — most of the menu is less than $10 — so you won’t break the bank on Ghee’s Local Cobia for $17. “This is more of a South Indiastyle dish, but it’s also very Miami,” Patel said. “I pick coconuts from my farm in Homestead to make coconut milk, and then I add black mustard seeds, curry leaves, lime and Thai chilies to make a coconut curry base. The cobia is grilled and marinated with ground coriander, cumin and cloves, and then lightly simmered in the coconut curry.” Spend the money you saved on a side order of Green Millet ($10). “Millet comes from a small village in India where my ancestors are from,” Patel said. “It’s hard to explain, but there’s really nothing like it.” 8965 Southwest 72nd Place, Kendall; 305-968-1850; gheemiami.com. TWO CHEFS Pinecrest Twenty-three years after opening as a cooking school, Two Chefs has stood the test of time as one of South Miami-Dade’s finest restaurants. Danish-born chef and owner Jan Jorgensen reinvents his menu every two weeks and still leads a regular schedule of cooking classes. A classic that never goes out of style is Jorgensen’s $36 FireRoasted Branzino. He combines duck-confit onions with aromatic fingerling potatoes, which serve as a bed for a butterflied, boneless fish rubbed with herb vinaigrette and garlic oil. Jorgensen finishes the dish in Two Chefs’ wood-burning oven. “As a cook, I like to actually cook, so whenever we can use the wood oven, we do,” he said. “You have to build a fire just like a Boy Scout, using oak wood, birch or both. When I put this dish in there, the skin gets really crispy, the potatoes get golden brown and delicious, and it all becomes a beautiful thing.” 8287 South Dixie Highway, Pinecrest; 305-663-2100; twochefsrestaurant.com.

It’s tangy, sweet and sour all at the same time.” 14690 Southwest 26th Street, Miami; 305-227-8818; finkarestaurant.com.

MARY!

t’s time to de-stigmatize the Bloody Mary. For too long, it’s been pigeonholed as a hangover helper or a once-in-a-while splurge while onboard an airplane. But look around Miami, from waterfront seafood restaurants to fancy French places, and you’ll find Bloody Marys that are anything but basic. No salt-laden bottled tomato juice or premixed blends need apply; we’re talking craft cocktails that are fresh, eye-catching and totally satisfying.

We searched high and low — reaching as far south as Key West — to uncover these 16 Bloody Marys that may be the best you’ve ever tasted. Some are impressively creative, while others are classic and smooth. Try one the next time you’re at one of these restaurants; no hangover or plane ticket necessary.

Naomi Harris’ Madruga Bakery is elevating Miami’s bread game to new heights. WORDS BY EVAN S. BENN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

S

he has fed sourdough starters in Anchorage and milled wheat in rural England, but the magnetic draw of Miami pulled Naomi Harris back to her hometown to open her own bread shop and café. Madruga Bakery, which came to life this year around the corner from Whole Foods in Coral Gables, is Harris’ ode to the proper breadmaking techniques she’s picked up through her training and apprenticeships both far and near, including local stints with Zak the Baker, Café Curuba and Lyon + Lyon Catering. She’s in the bakeshop at 4:30 a.m.,

milling whole grains into flour and tending to the wild yeasts that leaven her breads. LOCALS KNOW Her bakery has become a hit with in-the-know office workers from the area, who stop in at breakfast or lunch for fresh-brewed Counter Culture coffee and a slice of banana bread or an egg sandwich. Even the health-conscious crowds from neighboring Metropolis Fitness and Greenmonkey Yoga are regulars. “We’ve also gotten a lot of support from the Pinecrest area and those communities,” Harris said. “Some people come just for the bread — our whole-grain loaf

has become very popular. Classics like croissants and chocolate-chip cookies do well, too.” (Pro tip: Don’t miss Harris’ exceptional challah, a Friday-only treat available in limited quantities.) SAVORY SANDWICHES While breads play a starring role at Madruga, a changing menu of sandwiches, salads and soups makes it a smart place to meet for lunch or get some work done. The savory side of the menu is overseen by Persefoni Vordokas, who helped Harris come up with the sandwich that is the current object of our desire: Roasted Sweet Potato with Spiced Cashew Aioli, Arugula

and Pesto on Whole-Wheat Bread. “We wanted to have a really great vegan item on the menu,” Harris said. “So we started playing with different roasted vegetables, and then Perse wanted to add the pesto, and everything came together really well,” Harris said. “It’s vegan, but you’re not missing anything when you eat it. The potato has that natural sweetness, the arugula provides a little spicy balance, and then the bread is just a good carrier for all of that and the sauces.” Madruga Bakery, 1430 South Dixie Highway (at Madruga Court), Suite 117, Coral Gables; 305-262-6130; madrugabakery.com.

Meet the baker

Q&A with Naomi Harris How old are you? “28.” Where did you grow up? “I’m from Miami. I went to Miami Palmetto Senior High.” Where did you study/train? “I graduated from Northwestern University, then I moved to Alaska and worked at Fire Island Rustic Bake Shop. That’s where I totally fell in love with baking. I apprenticed at Tracebridge Sourdough in England. I was going to move to North Carolina, but I heard Zak (Stern) was making bread in Miami, and I was really excited because that wasn’t happening here before. So I worked for Zak for a little bit, as well as with the pastry chef at Lyon + Lyon and at Café Curuba.” Warm climate or cold? “Warm.” Butter or jam on toast? “Butter.” Why do you bake? “I like the troubleshooting aspect of it. You have to be aware of everything from variations in grain and the weather to temperature and hydration levels, and always be responding to it. I love that it’s a constantly changing process and not a rote thing.” What’s the best part of running a business? “Customers. Being able to interact with people, and give them a product that brings them joy, it feels really great to contribute to that.”

Madruga Bakery’s Roasted Sweet Potato Sandwich is vegan, but hearty whole-wheat bread, cashew aioli and basil pesto make sure no one’s missing any meat.

ROASTED SWEET POTATO SANDWICH MAKES 3 SANDWICHES

INGREDIENTS SANDWICH 1 large sweet potato 1 yellow onion 6 slices sourdough whole-wheat bread 1 cup fresh arugula Cashew aioli (see recipe) Pesto (see recipe) Olive oil Salt and pepper CASHEW AIOLI 1¾ cups raw cashews Fresh water ¼ cup olive oil 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons lemon juice

½ ½ ½ ¼

teaspoon cumin teaspoon crushed red pepper teaspoon salt teaspoon paprika

with remaining aioli ingredients in a blender, adding water while blending until aioli is smooth.

NO-CHEESE PESTO 2 cups fresh basil leaves ¼ cup toasted pine nuts 2 cloves garlic ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper ½ cup olive oil

2. Make pesto: Combine basil, pine nuts, garlic, salt and pepper in food processor and blend until combined. Drizzle in olive oil and pulse until the pesto comes together.

1. Make cashew aioli: A day ahead, place cashews in a bowl, cover with water and refrigerate overnight. Combine soaked cashews

3. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Scrub the potato clean, then cut in half lengthwise. Place each half cut-side down on a

cutting board, and slice into 1/4-inch planks. Lightly oil a baking sheet, place potato slices on sheet, then brush the tops of the potato with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake 20-25 minutes, until potato is soft. 4. While the potato bakes, cut the onion into thin slices. Set a heavy-duty skillet over medium heat, then coat with olive oil and add the sliced onion. Cook the onion, stirring occasionally, until the slices turn a

deep caramel color, 20-30 minutes. Season with salt. 5. Spread about a tablespoon of pesto on one side of one slice of bread, then cover it with 4-5 slices of sweet potato. Top sweet potato with caramelized onion, then a layer of arugula. Drizzle olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper on the arugula. Spread about a tablespoon of cashew aioli on one side of another slice of bread, and close the sandwich. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.

HALLANDALE BEACH

Once a tiny town that first incorporated 90 years ago, Hallandale Beach is still a burgeoning, changing community. The southeastern-most city in Broward County, hugged by Hollywood to the north and Aventura to the south, it is perhaps best known for Gulfstream Park, with its welcoming horse track, casino, shops and restaurants. But Hallandale Beach’s attributes stretch far beyond that. Its local businesses, inspired architecture and passionate locals are just a few reasons to visit. Here, one of those locals gives us an insider’s look at her city.

If anyone has witnessed Hallandale Beach’s growth, it’s Beth Geduld. A resident of the area for two decades, she opened her design showroom and staging business, Renovation Room, with business partner John Diaz in Hallandale Beach five years ago. Why? Because of how busy Hallandale Beach Boulevard is. She and her physician husband have found the beachfront city to be a perfect place to raise their family — including two teenage sons and a dog, Duke — and build her business. “Hallandale used to be very touristy, very seasonal,” she said. “There has been a lot of growth, and you still can’t get a prettier beach!”

Lean on your Sidekick to get you into the most popular hotspots in any of the 23 cities where Oasis operates — or to fulfill your every whim and desire. “During the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2014, our Sidekick received a three-page, $35,000 alcohol order, complete with obscure tequilas and fine wines,” Stanberry said. “It was a scramble, but they did it.” oasiscollections.com.

SIENNA CHARLES Jaclyn Sienna India developed a taste for exceptional service during her training at Philadelphia’s now-closed Le BecFin. But when she went to work at a travel agency, she saw that vacationplanning provided a lopsided level of service compared to the cost. “At the restaurant, I would see how someone spending $2,000 on a meal would speak with the sommelier and get introduced to the chef and learn about the ingredients and the pairings,” Sienna India said. “Yet someone spending $30,000 on a vacation would get no intimate knowledge about where they were staying or dining.” Sienna Charles, her travel concierge service based in Palm

Beach and New York, sets the standard for luxury travel with one-of-a-kind trips that are always expert-tested. Her most noteworthy excursions? Accompanying former President George W. Bush to Ethiopia, planning a private dinner at Versailles, and organizing breakfast atop the Arc de Triomphe. “When money is no object, you can plan a really amazing experience.” siennacharles.com. BA CULTURAL CONCIERGE When Madi Lang landed in Buenos Aires about 12 years ago, she had no idea the stay would become permanent. She decided to make a business out of her love for the complex, idiosyncratic city.

Lang founded BA Cultural Concierge, headquartered in Aventura, to guide her clients toward the best of Buenos Aires. Besides ultra-posh hotels and impossible-to-book restaurants, BA Cultural Concierge gives guests an insider’s glimpse of the city, booking private art viewings, professor-led architecture tours and in-home dinners with top local chefs. This concierge also offers 24hour support, a service that Lang’s clients appreciate, especially with the unexpected hiccups that can arise in South America. “It’s all about understanding the lingo of the city and its people and how they move through life,” she said. “That gives you this richness of context that you wouldn’t necessarily experience on your own.” baculturalconcierge.com.

The members-only Clubhouse in Buenos Aires features a garden pool, top, and lounge that are available to guests traveling with Oasis Collections.

{ ESCAPE }

L.A.Story Clear across the country, on the other coast, Los Angeles could be Miami’s twin. And L.A., like the Magic City, is having a moment.

BARBARA KRAFT (NOBU RYOKAN), WILLIAM RUST (WALDORF ASTORIA)

L

os Angeles and Miami are a lot alike. Both share strong Latin roots, sweatinducing traffic and a competitive duality between their daytime and nighttime pursuits. Like us, Angelenos have it all — and it just keeps getting better. Los Angeles’ culture is beginning to steal some of Hollywood’s spotlight, and forgotten pockets are filling in with new businesses to create neighborhoods overnight. STAY Miami Beach has Nobu Hotel at Eden Roc, and Malibu has the Nobu Ryokan (noburyokanmalibu. com). Squeezed between the Pacific Coast Highway and Carbon Beach (nicknamed Billionaire’s Beach for its moguls-in-residence), the 16-room, teak-slatted compound draws its inspiration from Japan’s traditional roadside inns. Guests are greeted in a Nakashima-furnished lobby and led to their room for a Japanese tea

ceremony with rice crackers baked by Nobu Matsuhisa. For more of the master’s fare, walk next door to his restaurant. Tutorials loaded onto iPads demonstrate the Japanese bathing ritual and how to tie a yukata (robe). The absence of desks says it all. Why work with an ocean to gaze at and a Japanese garden upon which to reflect? If you can pull yourself away from the Pacific, try the new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills (waldorfastoriabeverlyhills.com). Catering to a Rodeo Drive clientele, the brand commissioned Pierre-Yves Rochon (Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera, Shangri-La Hotel in Paris) to design 170 rooms and suites with a salute to Hollywood’s Golden Age. Nobu Ryokan, top and above right, is wedged between the Pacific Coast Highway and Carbon Beach in Malibu. The new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, right, is a salute to Hollywood glamour.

Sun at the rooftop pool, steps from one of three on-site Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants, or watch the world go by from each room’s spacious balcony. Its La Prairie Spa is unique to the city, while complimentary personal concierges and a house Rolls-Royce fall under necessities around here. EAT Melting-pot demographics and gentrification galore, not to mention having America’s breadbasket in its backyard, have whipped L.A. into a culinary mecca on par with New York — or even better, depending on whom you ask. When in Santa Monica, you can’t go wrong with anything by Rustic Canyon Family of Restaurants. Tallula’s (tallulasrestaurant.com), its latest eatery with a first-generation Mexican chef, replaces the Tex-Mex institution that preceded it with a produce-packed menu.

The chef blends toasted sunflower seeds, charred tomatoes and chipotle into sikil p’ak, a Yucatán dip typically made with pumpkin seeds. Scoop it up with crudités culled from whatever’s in season at the beach town’s famous farmers market. Leave the piña colada back home, and embrace the equally frothy avocado-lada. Chef-owner Steve Samson swears he can hear the trill of crickets at Rossoblu (rossoblula.com), his charcuterie and wood-fired followup to Sotto. Besides the countryside calmness at night, he was sold on City Market South, a 10-acre adaptive reuse development in downtown’s fashion district, when he heard there’d be bocce ball courts. Michael Sullivan, Blackberry Farm’s butcher and charcutier, showed Samson the ropes, including tallow (beef fat) as airy as Marshmallow Fluff. A dollop of the sage-seasoned paste comes on salumi boards. Fruit woods fuel a 9-foot hearth, where butterflied Santa Barbara prawns prepped like baked clams cook in seconds. Miami restaurateurs are feeling the itch to go west. The new Freehand Los Angeles (freehandhotels.com/los-angeles) opened with two bars by Gabe Orta and Elad Zvi, including the Broker Shaker. On deck: Yardbird from John Kunkel and Fi’lia by Michael Schwartz.

If Ojai Valley Inn & Spa reminds you of the Reagans’ California, it’s because Ronald and Nancy were among the Hollywood royalty who palled around the 220-acre property north of Los Angeles. Though the same sunset casts a mystical glow across the Topa Topa Mountains — “the pink moment” — a lot has changed since they checked in. A full, five-year renovation concludes in 2019. After golfing the 18-hole course planted with towering oaks and eucalyptus trees, or trailbiking on complimentary Linus bicycles, channel the famous lovebirds on the romantic terrace at Olivella. Chef de cuisine Andrea Rodella fluctuates between native dishes (rigatoni Bolognese) and California cuisine (yellowtail crudo with avocado and watermelon radish) with ease. For a sense of place, don’t skip the spa. Like Sedona, Ojai is sought for its healing powers, and treatments such as sound-energy therapy don’t shy away from the city’s New Age practices. Nicola Behrman, a British energy alchemist and spiritual guide, partnered with the spa to guide illumination sessions. Through conversation, sage and song, she clears negative energy and sends enlightened souls on their merry way. ojairesort.com. —RK

SHOP Miami has designer stores in spades, so focus your shopping spree on local exclusives. Heidi Merrick (heidimerrick.com), daughter of legendary surfboard shaper Al Merrick, captures the quintessential California girl in her namesake lifestyle collection. She makes Beatle-esque velvet suits, sweatshirts emblazoned with her “SRF LA” campaign and a new men’s line in her downtown atelier to sell at her nearby boutique. Sold in sets of five, her brother Britt’s surfboards double as art installations. From the first waft of palo santo at his set of RTH shops (rthshop.com), René Holguin transports patrons like Erykah Badu to his meticulously crafted world. The fashion, home and fragrance designer learned from Ralph Lauren before launching his own aesthetic where Old West and indigenous cultures, from his native El Paso, Texas, to Peru, play out in bandana bags and campfire-scented soap. Though a Canadian import, The Detox Market (thedetoxmarket.com) couldn’t get more Goop with its eco-only beauty products (Moon Juice, W3ll People). SEE Like Miami, Los Angeles has its share of private art collections that welcome the public. Maurice and Paul Marciano, the brothers behind Guess?, built a bona fide temple for their collection of 1,500 works, approximately 100 of which are presented in the inaugural group show, “Unpacking: The Marciano Foundation,” through December 24. Fans of mega art events should circle “LA/LA: A Celebration Beyond Borders” from September 15 through January 2018. Organized by Pacific Standard Time, exhibits at 70 regional art institutions address the dialogue between L.A. and Latin America. pacificstandardtime.org. WORDS BY REBECCA KLEINMAN

Dr. Craig Spurdle 92

INDULGE | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 | miamiindulge.com

Glance inside a person’s office, and much is revealed: passions, loves and interests; the world closest to the person’s heart. Dr. Craig Spurdle’s office is a glimpse into an adventurous life: 11x17 photos of him airborne as one of the top five mogul skiers on the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team in the early 1990s, diplomas and certificates that herald his competency as a top orthopedic surgeon, drawings from adolescent patients on whom he operated, and perhaps most touching, a clock frame with a photo of a child on whom Dr. Spurdle operated five times to repair a club foot. Each is a story within Dr. Spurdle’s life and commitment to children as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital; days that start at 6:30 a.m. to review traumas from the previous night, check orthopedic x-rays, visit patients and then surgeries, about 10 a week, on adolescents most commonly injured while playing sports. Years of skiing exposed Dr. Spurdle to the rigors of intense sports on the body and propelled him into his chosen profession, and to “fixing things,” as he says. Fixing injuries, joint reconstruction and rehabilitation, identifying kids with injury potential and addressing impending problems before the athletic season starts. Deeply compassionate, Dr. Spurdle operates on young patients with neuromuscular issues and has international patients for whom medical care was previously inaccessible. “I love the mission of this hospital,” Dr. Spurdle said about Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. “They don’t exclude anyone and don’t leave kids behind. If someone needs help, they’ll get it, and it allows me to focus on the kids.” Dr. Spurdle is quick to point out he is part of a larger dream team of surgeons; a group of 11 of the country’s top physicians, each with an expertise that intertwines with his own. He sees up to 140 kids a week, and about 10,000 fractures a year, each with their own special nuances. “I love the clinic,” Dr. Spurdle said about seeing patients. “It’s a process of several weeks to a month of talking to the patients, operating and healing, and the most rewarding thing is to see the excitement on the kids’ faces when they’re cleared for sports.” Not one to sit still, Dr. Spurdle is a founding board member of the Miami Children’s Hospital Ambulatory Surgery Center, which opened last year. He travels with the U.S. World Cup Ski Team as an on-snow physician, and is a voluntary assistant professor at UM School of Medicine. He runs, skis, snowboards, mountain bikes…the list is long. As your mother would say, “There is no grass growing under his feet.”

Express yourself. A Fernando Wong-designed landscape often includes native greenery — along with a pop of the unexpected. So you may find a 100-year-old banyan tree erupting from a luxury hotel’s courtyard, just as you may get a soaking tub in the backyard of a private residence. An Edie Laquer-designed home — her own luxury condo — displays a similar mix of the expected and not. There are finely crafted comforts, fitting for a woman who has built her legacy largely on the brokering of major high-rise deals, plus personal touches like a pumpkin-orange Bentley and a smoking room in which no smoking is allowed. In Wong and Laquer, meet two Miamians who have left permanent, one-of-a-kind marks on the city.

die Laquer, the mega real estate broker whose unflinching deal-making has been transforming Miami’s skyline since she arrived here from Toronto in 1980, is keen on succeeding at her next project. For once, it doesn’t involve assembling land deals. Or poring over zoning code. Or hiring bulldog legal teams. Or rising at 3 morning after morning, decade after decade, in order to edge out the competition. “My new project, finally, is me,” said Laquer, who retired from commercial brokering about five years ago and focuses now on her philanthropic work and on buying her own investment properties. “I finally found the time to be able to hire a personal trainer. And to travel. And maybe even to meet someone special someday.”

OCEAN VIEWS AND SHOES

She leads you through her recently renovated condo at the St. Regis Bal Harbour, which took several years to complete. In 2013, she bought two fifth-floor units at the St. Regis for $6.75 million, combining them into a 5,000-square-foot showcase of a home for herself and her pampered Coton de Tulear, Frenchie. just so behind glossy closet doors, the collection of silk scarves taking up a serious amount of real estate. Showcased in open, mirrored shelves are some of her most prized evening purses and shoes. “I love shoes. Well, who doesn’t? But I really love shoes. Apparently also scarves,” says Laquer, who is also into Bentleys. Currently, she gets around in a “flame-orange Bentley that the valet guys here call The Pumpkin. I bought it for the sound system. I just love music, and it has amazing sound.”

DETERMINED TO ACHIEVE

Laquer has been attached to numerous landmark development deals in Miami, totaling about $5 billion. They include assembling eight blocks in the blighted Park West neighborhood for the upcoming Miami Worldcenter project, the sale of Florida East Coast Railway’s 56-acre tract for Midtown Miami, plus endless projects in the Brickell area, the Biscayne corridor and Coconut Grove. She assembled the land for the Grove’s The Ritz-Carlton, built in 2002, and for CocoWalk. In 2013, she sold her condo at South Beach’s Continuum, originally purchased for $5.4 million, for a record-breaking $13 million. She chalks up her successes to everything she learned from her parents, both Holocaust survivors who lost most of their loved ones to concentration-camp atrocities and met in a post-war relief facility in Munich. They had their first child in Munich, a daughter they named Maria, and soon after moved to Paris, where they had Edie. The family, close to penniless, relocated to Toronto in the 1950s. Laquer’s mother, Peggy, eventually opened a bridal salon, and her father, Michael, succeeded in the mortgage business.

“My dedication to my career came out of the work ethic of my parents,” said Laquer, who was married briefly, years ago, and otherwise has kept her focus on her business. “Because my parents went through so many horrendous things, everything I have done in my life I have done for them. I wanted to be a great student and a great daughter and make them as happy as possible. That’s what’s made me so determined to achieve. That’s why I don’t take ‘No’ for an answer.’’ Over the years, she has also cemented a reputation for not letting anyone in the development game get the better of her, even when it has taken years of litigating. “It’s a tough business, but it’s tougher when you’re the only woman in a game of powerful men,” Laquer said.

GIFT OF GIVING

Laquer may have been born in Paris and raised in Toronto, but she considers Miami home, and it’s the city she wants to give back to, she says. She’s been involved for years in endless charitable projects, among them the United Way of Miami-Dade, The Miami Project/ Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Big Brothers Big Sisters and others. This year, she gave a $1 million gift to Legal Services of Greater Miami to endow an attorney’s chair focused on women and children’s rights. Late last year, she gave $5 million to Miami Jewish Health to help create a state-of-the-art residential complex for the care of people with memory-related disorders. She always knew she’d make it big. And then give back. “The opposite

of philanthropy is tyranny,” she likes to say, a reference to the horrors her parents suffered. At 19, she and a friend started a successful cosmetics business in Toronto, which three years later had 250 employees selling products throughout Canada. Laquer sold her interest in the company early on, looking for something bigger. Soon after, she went to a party where she met the man who would be her mentor in the real estate development business. “He was looking for a protégé,” Laquer said. “I was interested in big business, and he was building skyscrapers. I learned at his elbow. He was much older than me, and some people thought he had another motivation. But he just wanted to teach me the business. He would pick me up at 3 or 4 in the morning in his light green Rolls-Royce, and he would say that to succeed in business, you had to give yourself a head start. I guess that’s how I learned to get up so early.”

FIGURING IT OUT

Laquer unofficially mentors the occasional young woman,

usually daughters of friends and colleagues looking to break into a variety of businesses. “But I can usually tell right away if they have what it takes. I’d say it’s street sense,” Laquer said. “For example, so many times I’d have two high-powered men in a room who needed to like each other. The deal wasn’t going to get done unless they aligned. Eventually, I figured out that I could sit in the same spot in my office, in such a way that the men would have to face each other. I would take a pad of paper and sit there doodling, looking down, so they had no choice but to look at each other instead of at me.” Before you depart Laquer’s condo, she takes you into the cigar room — with its marble fireplace, modern, saddle-leather armchairs and giant chandelier — to show you her stash of Cohibas and Monte Cristos. She doesn’t smoke, but she likes to be able to offer them to guests. So, what if the right gentleman came over and wanted to actually smoke one of those gems in her cigar room? “I’d make him go outside.” ☐

Wong added 240 palm trees and 250 shade trees to the new Four Seasons property, as well as a 100-year-old banyan (pictured), and a nine-story kapok tree.

WONG’S FIRST JOB IN THE UNITED STATES WAS DIGGING DITCHES ON A LANDSCAPING CREW. HE LEARNED ENGLISH BY WATCHING SOUTH PARK.

Fernando Wong, the award-winning landscape designer behind the new tropical oasis at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, looked at 175 pictures of banyan trees before he found the right one for the club’s courtyard. The trunk of the sprawling 100-year-old tree had to be split into five sections so it could be trucked down from Hobe Sound. But no other tree would do. “The structure of the branches fit the site,” he said simply. Wong prides himself in not having a signature style, instead letting each individual site inspire him. “Always, the landscaping is the frame for the architecture,” he said.

FROM DIGGING TO DESIGNING

Wong came to landscape design accidentally. Though he studied architecture and interior design in his native Panama, until his early 20s, he had never really considered landscaping. “My dad encouraged me very forcefully to be an athlete,” he explained. “I was a swimmer and a pentathlete. From 19 to 24, I traveled a lot, all over the world, competing. But I knew I needed to become an adult and make a living.” A friend in Florida offered to sponsor him if he wanted to immigrate. The job: working on a landscaping crew. “He was digging ditches,” explained Wong’s partner in business and life, Tim Johnson. “He taught himself English by watching South Park.”

Johnson said the owner of the landscaping company saw Wong “doodling” and immediately took him off the crew and sent him to the office to start designing.

SEEDS OF CHANGE

Similarly, Johnson never thought he’d be working in landscape design. The two met on Lincoln Road in 2002, when Johnson, a Wall Street veteran, was running his own public relations firm. Three years later, Wong opened his own design firm out of their spare bedroom, but it wasn’t until the Recession hit in 2008 that Johnson joined the firm. Today, Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design has offices in Miami Beach, Palm Beach and the Hamptons and does work around the world. The landscaping project at the new Four Seasons in Surfside is the firm’s largest to date, and presented unique challenges. Wong had to frame two very distinct architectural styles, the graceful Mediterranean Revival club built in 1930 and the Richard Meier-designed glass towers of the new hotel and residences that wrap around it. Early designs had to be rearranged to allow unobstructed access for fire trucks. When Wong first signed on to the project in 2012, the nine acres between the club and the Atlantic were an “arid desert, just sand,” he said. The property now boasts 240 new palms and 250 shade trees. The firm spent nearly $1 million just transporting the banyan and 13 other specialty trees, including a nine-story kapok, a rare Moreton Bay fig and nine massive seagrapes, each 20-feet wide.

Besides significant commercial projects, Wong also designs landscapes for private residences around the world. His concept for this home in Miami Beach took into account several large trees that were already part of the property.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE Landscaping trends and tips from Fernando Wong and Tim Johnson of Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design.

1. WATCH THE WATER. People today are more mindful of where irrigation water is coming from, and where rainwater will go. Some are opting to spend more for cisterns to collect rain for irrigation. They’re also opting for permeable driveways and paths. Wong uses a lot of stepping stones with grass in between them instead of concrete pathways. “That way, not all of the runoff from the roof runs into the street and causes floods,” Wong explained. 2. FAKE GRASS IS COOL. New synthetic sods are vastly improved over the old, bright-green, plastic stuff. They don’t require the irrigation or chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can make real grass a bad choice environmentally. Newer products even incorporate a few brown blades, to keep it real. “We were against it at first, but it’s really very nice,” Johnson said. “You really can’t tell the difference. And it drains better, because with the gravel bed underneath it, you’re essentially creating a French drain.” 3. NATIVE IS OFTEN NICER. High-end property owners are increasingly asking for natives in their landscapes, for environmental reasons and because they can thrive in ways exotic ornamentals just never will. “We recommend them for their reliability,” Johnson said. “And they’ll need far less irrigation.” 4. ACCESSORIZE THE YARD. Many of Wong’s clients are now asking for their landscape designs to include more than just plants, chairs and a barbecue. They want pizza ovens and outdoor televisions, entire outdoor rooms devoted to living and entertaining. “Our clients travel a lot,” Johnson said. “They want that resort experience in their backyards.”

‘I TEND TO DESIGN IN THREE DIMENSIONS. SOMETIMES THAT INCLUDES TREES THAT ARE ALREADY THERE.’

108

INDULGE | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 | miamiindulge.com

SOME TREES STAY

The firm moves a lot of big trees, but they’re almost always saving trees that were slated for demolition, Johnson said. And sometimes, they’re presented with spaces that already have stately trees worth designing around. That was the case with a Miami Beach home with a sprawling oak in the backyard, its gnarled branches contrasting with the clean lines of the contemporary home and Wong’s linear design. That design turned Florida’s most common tree into a striking specimen in the middle of the garden. “One of the things I tend to do is design in three dimensions and sometimes that includes large specimen trees that are already there,” Wong said. Wong likes working with intricate spaces. He was commissioned to design the landscaping for the 15,000-square-foot sculpture garden at the Institute of Contemporary Art, opening in December in the Design District. The project was complicated by the fact that the space has to accommodate events, and the landscaping can’t draw attention away from the art. “We wanted it to be a backdrop,” he said. “My landscapes are very, very quiet.” ☐

With the Four Seasons Surf Club project complete, Wong turns his attention to outdoor spaces he is designing for the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences in Fort Lauderdale and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami. Construction in Fort Lauderdale is expected to begin in November, and the new ICA opens in December.

wentieth-century writer Jean Cocteau once mused, “Mirrors should think longer before they reflect.” No doubt Cocteau would find reason to pause at the Miroir Yoko multidimensional mirror created by his fellow Frenchman, artist-designer Hervé Van der Straeten. The substantial piece, accented with anodized blue aluminum, stretches nearly 6 feet and features Van der Straeten's instantly recognizable use of contrasting materials and bold variations of form deployed in perfect proportions. Van der Straeten designs and makes all of his works in his own bronze- and cabinet-making workshops in Paris. His latest collection, available at Ralph Pucci International, has a playful sense of movement and color that begs for multiple examinations.
