W
hen I reviewed restaurants for the Miami Herald and, before that, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, there was no bigger rush than finding a four-star dining experience in the least expected places. Strip-mall restaurants with no marketing or PR budget, no social media, no hype — just deliriously good cooking and meaningful hospitality. The promise of those elevated discoveries is what carried me through the lousy meals (and there were plenty). I felt that rush of discovery the first time I walked through what’s now The Copper Door Bed & Breakfast. Jamila Ross and Akino West had taken a run-down Overtown motel and rehabbed it into a chic B&B. Ross and West, both veterans of the Miami restaurant scene, exude an energy and passion that I knew would translate to something special for their guests. Starting on Page 94, photographer Felipe Cuevas and writer Andrew Giambarba take you inside Copper Door, and I hope it inspires you to go experience it for yourself. Discoveries abound throughout this issue, from the best new Asian restaurants in town (p. 55) and a 10-day Evan S. Benn itinerary through Thailand (p. 77), to the latest smart-home Editor in Chief gadgets (p. 62) and antique finds along North Miami’s 20th Century Row (p. 40). When it came time to photograph our Home & Design cover story on Dr. Brianna and Manny Varas — a pediatrician with a concierge-style practice and her luxury homebuilder husband — I wanted their house in Coral Gables to shine like the stars who live in it. Celebrity stylist Elysze Held spared no expense (sorry, bosses!), bringing in elaborate floral arrangements from Roses et Pivoines, artwork from Nisi B Home Design Gallery that has been in New York’s MoMA, and fashion pieces from the world’s leading design houses. The result is a stunning shoot by Nick Garcia and insightful story by Angela CarawayCarlton (p. 86) that speak to the power of the Varases’ hard work and perseverance. The day of the photoshoot was an all-hands-on-deck situation, with no fewer than 10 set assistants, an intern and a social media manager. I tried my best to stay out of their way, knowing that our team would deliver a four-star experience for our readers to discover.

ne of the many pleasures of exploring the rich pages of INDULGE, in addition to this month’s Home & Design cover story, is how our team of storytellers and photographers delivers our city’s unique culture of enjoyment. This issue features an array of content designed to inspire your adventures, delight your palate, and remind you to plan that intriguing getaway (to Thailand!, p. 77) or simple staycation to Florida’s West Coast (p. 72) or right in our backyard at Miami’s newest bed and breakfast (p. 94). Let’s begin with a high-octane idea: Imagine the melding of a luxurious residence and your dream automobile. What would that look like, feel like, even smell like? For those of us who secretly love our cars enough to want to live with them, we’ll get your engine running in Where Cars Are the Stars (p. 100). Maybe you choose to live in the Aston Martin Residences, where you can be a couch potato on a Scottish Highlands leather sofa, with the same super-soft materials used in their cars seats. And if it’s that new-car smell you Lesley DeCanio can’t get enough of, secure your place at the Porsche Design Tower, where the design team is infusing the building with Porsche’s signature perfume! If you’re more into cuisine than cars, you’ll love our survey of Miami’s best, new high-end Asian restaurants. I appreciate the artistry of a subtly layered dish, with über-fresh ingredients meant to be savored in the moment. In Dish (p. 55), we serve up 10 noteworthy and fanciful Asian dishes from Kendall to Brickell to Wynwood. Each item is a must-have when you visit these hot spots (one of them a secret location), so take notes! And whatever you choose to sample on your culinary journey, don’t miss the fire-roasted Peking Duck Buns from Lotus + Cleaver at the trendy Asian food hall 1-800-Lucky. I’m absolutely craving them right now! After you’ve had your fill of those, why not explore some hidden treasures just off the Palmetto? In this issue’s Neighborhood (p. 66), we dialed up a friend, Jon Secada, to be our personal guide to Hialeah. I can't imagine a better choice to help us unwrap this dynamic city, which is being rebranded as “Leah” — as in the Leah Arts District. It’s here that you can take in the colorful graffiti murals while measuring up the triple threat of cafecito + croqueta + pastelito. And if you happen to run into Jon around town, ask him to tell you about the inspiration for his latest single, Como Fue. Finally, if our Home & Design issue motivates you to purchase something fabulous for your abode, you’ll love The Local (p. 21), curated by Claudia Miyar and showcasing some beautiful finds. Flip to the back of the magazine to see her Indulgence (p. 110), a work of art from Gucci Décor that’s sure to solve any decorating dilemma. No dilemma? No problem. The designer objets in this issue of INDULGE are all truly spectacular, and they make the perfect eye candy for that special place you call home.

DIY LIKE A BOSS Mansion Inspiration About to embark on your next home project? Take a stroll first through these historic South Florida mansions for heady ideas. It’s hard to say what’s prettier, the Tuscan-inspired Vizcaya Museum and Gardens built by James Deering or the view of Biscayne Bay spread out before it. Inside you’ll find a manse meant to mimic the grand homes of Europe, as dreamed up by art curator Paul Chalfin. vizcaya.org. South of Vizcaya, Deering’s brother Charles Deering lived on a property that houses a wooden home built in 1900, a three-story stone mansion, and a preserve spread out over 444 acres of native Florida. Now it’s the Deering Estate, which, with its picturesque waterfront, might be the most Instagrammed county park around. deeringestate.org. As Henry Flagler laid rail lines along Florida’s coastline, he also built himself a palace on Palm Beach. Completed in 1902, Whitehall stands as a gleaming example of the Gilded Age, with 75 rooms across 12,000 square feet. For train buffs, there’s Flagler’s private railcar, No. 91, circa 1886. flaglermuseum.us. Among these historic homes, none is more quirky and arty than the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, built by Chicago-born painter Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1920. There’s the drawing room with its mahogany driftwood ceiling, the two-story art studio covered in paintings, and occasional monkey sightings on the stunning, 35-acre beachfront property in Fort Lauderdale. bonnethouse.org.

Da Vinci: Inventions
You know how most museums have guards standing by to make sure you don’t touch anything? Not so at Frost Science’s Da Vinci: Inventions, a show that encourages you to play with some of the exhibits. On display are a few of the creations dreamed up by the master inventor, including a helicopter, submarine, parachute and bicycle. About of them can be played with, including the Transformazione Moto Alternato in Continuo, a continuous motion device. The items were assembled by Italian artisans using , pages of Da Vinci inventions, some of which predicted technology centuries before they became reality. Through December . frostscience.org/davinci.
The Local Art Deconstruction
Julia Tuttle (Hidden Spirits)
A new show on display through September 30 at the Frost Art Museum features work from a dozen Miami visual artists. The 20 pieces in Deconstruction: A Reordering of Life, Politics and Art range from the haunting look at homelessness from Zachary Balber’s Julia Tuttle (Hidden Spirits), to I Will Not Die, the fierce portrait of a woman by Craig Coleman. The show is the debut of the museum’s new chief curator, Amy Galpin, and also a strong statement of its commitment to local art. thefrost.fiu.edu.

In vodou, the poto mitan is the pillar in the center of a sacred temple and often a key element that defines a ceremony. It’s also a phrase used for Haitian women, like the madan saras who work the stalls in the market and hold together the local economy. Writer Françoise Elizée and photographer Pipe Yanguas delve into the lives of such Haitian women in their new book, Haiti Rediscovered – The Quintessential Potomitan. Elizée and Yanguas traveled to Haiti last year to document the lives of 12 of these women and their environment, and they produced a book that honors their contributions to their country. haitirediscovered.com.

My
BEAUTY
BLACK BOOK
Growing up, local cartoonist and social media guru Jamila Rowser never saw characters like herself — young, female, black and Latina — in the comic books she loved. Months of work and one successful Kickstarter campaign later, that’s changed. Her new book, Wash Day, created with illustrator Robyn Smith, is an engaging, slice-of-life comic about the beauty and endurance of women of color. “Wash day is such a big event for black women, whether you have natural hair, a weave or whatever,” Rowser said. “It tends to involve a lot of patience and energy, and we usually spend a few hours on it. I wanted to honor that experience and create a positive story about black hair.” Here are a few of her beauty-and-wellness favorites:
BUBBLES
FREE SPIRIT
RAW SHEA BUTTER MOISTURE RETENTION SHAMPOO “A super-gentle cleanser. It seals in moisture and keeps my hair healthy.” ulta.com.
FANM DJANM “I have a whole drawerful of bright African headwraps. Especially here with the humidity, they’re so easy to throw on and look great.” fanmdjanm.com.
GREEN ARROW
SCREAMING CARROTS “A great vegan and organic restaurant. I really like the sautéed portobello and peas.” screamingcarrots.com.
THE INCREDIBLES
RETRO GIRL
WARBY PARKER “I recently got some cool cat-eye glasses in the Wynwood store. Even if I’m not wearing makeup, there’s something fun happening on my face.” warbyparker.com.
THE FLASH
PONTIE WAX WILD ORANGE CANDLE “One of my friends makes this candle, and it’s so good. I like to light it when I’m writing – it gets me in a calm, creative space.” Pontie Wax at etsy.com.
THE CURLOLOGY STUDIO “I found them on Instagram! The stylist knew how to cut my hair in its natural state – not blown out – so she could really shape it well.” vagaro.com/thecurlologystudio.
IN LOVE WITH THE COCO(NUT ) While teaching and traveling in Thailand, Danielle Conte (pictured) was dazzled by the ubiquity — and versatility — of coconut oil. She watched locals use it for everything: moisturizer, hair conditioner, nutritional supplement, makeup remover, bug-bite soother. “By the time I got home to Florida, I was such a coconut-oil advocate that I was gifting it to people in mason jars,” Conte said. Her friends prompted her to think bigger. The result? Conscious Coconut, a line of travel-friendly organic coconut oil that’s been embraced by top local resorts (1 Hotel South Beach stocks it in every room) and boutiques. Conte sources the finest coconuts (“They’re not all created equal!”) and formed a fair-trade co-op that hand-presses the oil in small batches to preserve its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory powers. Once the products arrive in the United States, they’re packaged by adults with developmental disabilities. For every tube sold, Conscious Coconut gives a child a meal through Feeding America — 120,000 so far. Untouched by machines, the luxuriously light oil sinks right in, leaving skin radiant. The fact that the graphic tube looks super-glamorous in a beach bag is an added bonus. consciouscoconut.com.
FENTY BEAUTY STUNNA LIP PAINT “I love matte lipstick, and this universal red (‘Uncensored’) is the best. I can wear it for hours, and my lips still feel soft and moisturized.” fentybeauty.com.

THE WATCH
“I’ve been collecting watches for a couple of years, and this one, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun, to me is the perfect watch. It’s understated. It’s not flashy or gold or in-your-face.” 140 Northeast 39th Street, Suite 125, Miami; 305-507-7488; iwc.com.
THE BACKPACK
“I like that the Herschel Heritage bag from Basico is super-minimalist. It’s one zipper, one pocket, but it can easily fit your laptop or your sweater. It’s sort of that Goldilocks backpack: not too big, it’s not too small.” 2347 Northwest Second Avenue, Miami; 786-360-3688; shopbasico.com.
my 305 style CHARMEL MAYNARD From student athlete to investment banker to the treasurer of the University of Miami, he’s an expert in balancing work and play. THE SNEAKERS
“I wear these Common Projects sneakers every single weekend with every single outfit I have. I’ve worn them with suits to weddings and events. It’s literally the perfect sneaker.” commonprojects.com.
THE FRAGRANCE
“I love wearing different all-natural scents from Le Labo for the office or for going out. I can’t tell you my favorite though — that’s a secret!” 2659 Northwest Second Avenue, Miami; 786-636-6928; lelabofragrances.com.

“Reggae Sundays at Wynwood Yard hosted by Kulcha Shok Muzik. The setting, the food, the music; when you put it all together, it’s a great way to unwind.” 56 Northwest 29th Street, Miami; 305-351-0366; kulchashok.com/ reggae-sundays.
“Given that I’m the treasurer of the university, I listen to NPR’s Planet Money and Freakonomics Radio to supplement politics and world news with some finance-specific news. They’re all just that right length for those of us who don’t want to listen to a two-hour show.” npr.org/podcasts.

ROW OF
Pros
North Miami’s 20th Century Row is the place to find impeccably sourced antique furniture, midcentury modern art and other design masterpieces.
D
esign hunters in the know flock to an unassuming stretch of Northeast 125th Street in North Miami — dubbed 20th Century Row by its longtime tenants — to search for pieces from some of the world’s most iconic artists and furniture makers. Established nearly 13 years ago, when the neighboring Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami was just hitting its stride, 20th Century Row is home to eclectic antique shops and galleries that attract local and international interior designers. Each of the shops highlighted here is open to the public. So the next time you’re looking for a singular piece that your guests won’t stop raving about, start your search along 20th Century Row.
GARY RUBINSTEIN ANTIQUES With an expansive, three-room showroom, Gary Rubinstein Antiques is one of the most renowned antiques dealers in Miami. Offering midcenturymodern finds sourced from the 1940s to the ’70s, Rubinstein has a particular penchant for Italian pieces from the ’50s and ’60s, while also offering wares from French, Dutch and North American icons. Top finds: With such a rarified inventory, Rubinstein’s shop is for the most discerning of design lovers. A lovely pair of Franco Campo + Carlo Graffi midcentury drawer chests are priced at $65,000; an elegant Ico Parisi nesting table runs $8,800. Rubinstein also presents select art — from a fantastic series of John Rose sculptural spirals to impeccable surrealist works by famed set designer and artist Robert Springfels. 859 Northeast 125th Street; 305-891-7580; garyrubinsteinantiques.com.

VERMILLION 20th CENTURY FURNISHINGS Taking a more eclectic approach, Vermillion 20th Century Furnishings serves a desirable roster of interior designers and art collectors. Owner Susan Cutler, who once dabbled as an art advisor with a focus on sculpture, is drawn to pieces that retain an architectural composition. She sources mainly from the 1940s to the early 2000s. “I was taught you get the real thing — or nothing,” Cutler said. Top finds: A Grosfeld House black lacquer and brass cabinet from the ’40s is a standout, priced at $16,800. A Jean-Paul Gaultier corset bowl and Gucci horsebit cufflinks from the ’70s are exceptional purchases for the design lover who has it all. A sculptural chrome, Lucite and brass bar cart from Italian designer Romeo Rega is easily one of the most covetable items in the shop at $6,800. Other notable designers include Milo Baughman and Philippe Starck. 765 Northeast 125th Street; 305-893-7800; galleryvermillion.com. TISHU GALLERY Tishu Gallery — whose owners claim that timeless beauty is the only rule — has a heavy emphasis on earthy woods and metals. Its designer pieces run the gamut from utilitarian to utterly whimsical.
Gary Rubinstein, top, curates a selection of mostly midcenturymodern finds at his Gary Rubinstein Antiques, a staple of North Miami’s 20th Century Row. Opposite page and this page: Furniture and home décor pieces on display in Rubinstein’s sizable showroom are sourced largely from Italy, with some French, Dutch and North American designs also available for his discerning customers.
Top finds: A pair of bronze gazelle chairs by U.S. designer Dan Johnson sport winged corners and curved lines, evoking a scene from a Dalí masterpiece, for $36,500. Japanese-American designer George Nakashima’s walnut platform bed, offered at $25,000, melds incredible design with traditional craftsmanship. By appointment only. 689 Northeast 125th Street; 617-852-5246; tishugallery.com. CASA MONDO Because no well-heeled home is complete without art, Casa Mondo is here to help round out your hunt along 20th Century Row. Owner Moti Vinograd has curated the space to reflect a borderless world in which the universal language is art — from Miami to Israel, Spain, France and China. Works by notable artists are the major draw at Casa Mondo, though you can find items priced under $50 as well. Top finds: An edition of Keith Haring works from the Best Buddies logo series is $25,000. A Dalí stamped edition print is $4,500. Local artists like Pablo Contrisciani and Didi Contreras also have a home at Casa Mondo, as do works by Purvis Young, Ahol Sniffs Glue, William Moser and John de la Huis. 773 Northeast 125th Street; 305-772-3216; facebook.com/casamondomiami. VITALS 39. President of CMC Real Estate, the sales and marketing arm of Ugo Colombo’s CMC Group. Vanessa Grout is a third-generation Miamian deeply rooted in the city’s cultural fabric. She stayed put to study liberal arts at the University of Miami and later went on to obtain a juris doctor from St. Thomas University. As a clerk at a criminal defense firm in the city, Grout longed to be part of the rapidly changing Miami skyline. She shifted her sights to a firm that specialized in transactional real estate, but even that didn’t quench her thirst. She then went to work at Vector Group while earning her MBA at the NYU Stern School of Business. Soon after, Vector promoted Grout to CEO of the Douglas Elliman enterprise in Miami. At just 32 years old, she became a powerful force in the Magic City’s booming real estate. After successfully restructuring the company, managing millions of dollars in revenue and nabbing a slew of awards — Urban Land Institute’s 2013 Young Leader of the Year, 40 Under 40 by the South Florida Business Journal, to name two — Grout joined CMC Real Estate. She currently spearheads sales for Brickell Flatiron while also redesigning her new home, a 1930s bungalow in Miami Beach. BRAVING THE HEAT “Summer in Miami gets a bad rap, but I think it’s beautiful — everything feels so tropical. Plus, you don't need reservations to dine anywhere in the city — you just have to wear the right clothing!” SUPPORT LOCAL “I love exploring local art galleries and studios. Miami has a really cool emerging art scene, and I like that there’s an opportunity to actually visit the artists and understand what inspires them. Some of my recent acquisitions include Firelei Báez, Gonzalo Fuenmayor, Carolina Sardi and Brookhart Jonquil.” RIDING THE WAVE “My after-school activities growing up included wakeboarding. It’s like riding a bike to me. I recently got a new wakeboard, so I’ve been practicing behind my house in Biscayne Bay, especially early in the morning. It’s my favorite time of day to go.”

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE EVER RECEIVED “Don't spread yourself thin. You can let people down by taking on too much.” POINT OF VIEW “CMC excels in attention to detail and providing a quality product. We focus on what it would feel like from a resident’s perspective to live in the space and how the spaces feel.” GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT “I have been successful in a business that allows me to be creative and work with a great group of people. We’re building what’s changing the Miami skyline.” WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW “People don't realize how handy I am. I’ve been renovating my house, and my friends are amazed by how much I’ve done myself: all the lighting design and landscaping, and I did the general contractor work. But I certainly had a lot of help.” A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING “I did an assisted headstand in yoga class the other day — that was amazing!” MOST TREASURED POSSESSION “I actually hate having ‘stuff.’ I didn't even have silverware until I moved into my new home. But one thing I have moved with me since I was 5 years old is this Steinway grand piano, even when I lived in places that could only fit the piano. I don’t practice enough, but when I do I find it to be so meditative and enjoyable.” MOTTO “Never stop trying. Life throws you curveballs, and you have to stay the course. There are ups and downs in business and in life. When you’re experiencing the down moments, they feel like they last a long time, but it’s important to push through and not quit. When you push through and persevere, you thank yourself later for that effort.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

the movers ‘If we work together, it’s a done deal. I am going to give percent of myself to my clients.’ “I needed a city that allowed me to work in English and Spanish and use my background,” Arriaga said. “I moved to Miami. From the beginning, my career has been a blessing.”
{DESIGNER}
Hernan Arriaga
Born in Argentina, the interior designer brings a global sensibility to projects that are built to last.
T
he first meeting Hernan Arriaga has with a new client is in the client’s home. Arriaga arrives, and they visit for two or three hours. Clients tell him about special pieces of furniture, a favorite artist or why they have a certain table. He notes what type of décor the clients prefer, the quality and how it has been maintained. What Arriaga is looking for is a connection, because trust is key. When Arriaga designs an interior, it is meant to last forever. And forever is built on absolute faith between interior designer and client.

“It’s about synergy. The energy that flows,” Arriaga said. “If we work together, it’s a done deal. I am going to give 150 percent of myself to my clients.” A FORMER MODEL For Arriaga, his entry into interior design was much like that first client meeting. Arriaga knew he was going to be an interior designer the moment he walked through a home in Pennsylvania. “Early American, incredible architecture,” Arriaga said. He was shown the home by a man who designed the interiors, and he knew

right then that interior design was his future. Arriaga was born in Argentina, and he moved to the United States at 24 years old. He worked as a model but had an inclination for drawing. He even fixed windows and houses when he was younger. Before moving from Argentina, interior design was not on Arriaga’s radar. After that Pennsylvania walk-through, Arriaga sold everything he had to attend the New York School of Interior Design. He worked at design firms during and after school, before deciding in 2006 that it was time for a change.
HIGH-END PROJECTS Arriaga’s first client blended his former career with his current one: Inés Rivero, a former supermodel, fellow Argentinian and friend from New York. Since working on Rivero’s Miami home, Arriaga hasn’t stopped. “It’s a lifestyle. It’s not something you’re sold, it’s something you learn. My job is to educate my people, my clients,” Arriaga said. “I give them a new lifestyle that is molded to everything they do at every time during the day.” Today, Arriaga’s firm has six employees, in addition to contractors and vendors. He can be found in the pages of magazines like AD and Elle Decor. His firm handles high-end residential projects as well as commercial ventures. Look to Porsche Design Tower and Echo Brickell for examples of his work. Arriaga works with Armani/Casa and is in talks with a French furniture designer to launch a collection. Arriaga’s clientele is global. Currently, he has at least 18 projects in cities across Florida, New York, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and more. Clients hail from the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. “An airplane is my life,” Arriaga said. “I love it. You need that love for what you do.” WORDS BY NINA LINCOFF / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Dr. Michael Zinner Miami Cancer Institute’s founding CEO makes medical breakthroughs by day and lobster risotto by night — when he can find the time.
D
r. Michael Zinner’s late wife used to joke that if he wanted a good meal, he’d have to learn to cook it for himself. He took her up on the challenge in a colossal way. Then chief of surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Zinner temporarily traded in his scrubs and scalpel for an apron and butcher knife to spend a few weeks learning from the best: chef Eric Ripert and his team at New York’s famed Le Bernardin. Rising from fava-bean peeler to hot-appetizer chef, Zinner left the gig with a specialty dish under his belt — lobster risotto, made from scratch — and a new perspective. “A classic French kitchen and an operating room both take hard work, long hours and great passion,” he said. “Two completely different universes with many parallels.” NO TYPICAL DAY Never one to back away from a challenge, Zinner left Boston for Miami two years ago to oversee the launch of the Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida. As the

founding CEO and executive medical director, he’s responsible for everything from quality and finances to recruitment and retention. “I make sure the trains run on time,” Zinner said. “There’s no typical day.” The Institute, which consolidated cancer care under one roof from 13 different operations when it opened in January 2017, sees 1,000 patients a day. Under Zinner’s leadership, the Institute became the second in the nation to launch a new form of radiation therapy that uses continuous MRI to personalize treatment and target tumors and surrounding tissues. He’s recruited more than 50 cancer specialists from around the country, adding to the 20 already on staff. A Miami native, Zinner grew up boating, sailing and fishing, once catching a 400-pound tuna. Though he doesn’t currently own a boat, he has something better: “Friends with boats!” he said with a laugh. BEAUTY IN ART He also finds respite looking at the oils, prints and sculptures that fill his Coral Gables condo,
collected with his late wife, who once ran a contemporary art gallery in Boston. “There’s a great beauty and relaxation in art,” Zinner said. “There are some pieces I can look at every day and still see something different in them. I like to read about the artists and their motivations.” On Sunday mornings, Zinner, who lives alone (“I don’t have time for a pet,” he said), heads to his terrace overlooking Biscayne Bay with a stack of newspapers and a pot of coffee. That’s about all the down time he gets; his 12-hour workdays don’t leave time for cooking. “I have an oven that I’m pretty sure still has the instruction manual inside,” he acknowledged. Still, Zinner manages to find some tasty meals. “The food is so good at the Cancer Institute,” he said, “because we have celebrity chef Cindy Hutson overseeing it. Sometimes on my way out, I’ll stop in and see what they’ve cooked that day and take it home!” And if lobster risotto ever shows up on the menu, you’ll know who was taking a break from medicine to hang with chef Hutson in the kitchen. Miami’s most influential wedding organizer shares her tips for creating an extraordinary event that no one will forget.

rom socialites to scions, couples searching for an exquisite wedding that will have guests reminiscing for years turn to Guerdy Abraira for her audacious personality, ingenious thinking and fierce dedication to perfection. For more than a decade, the Haiti-born beauty has been the city’s go-to wedding planner for glitterati like the Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh and top fashion blogger Arielle Charnas (@somethingnavy). Abraira’s outré weddings marry the traditional with a twist — like the time she positioned thousands of balloons and an industrial fog machine to create the illusion that guests were dancing on clouds. “My goal is to create a stop-and-awe experience that is customized and reflects my bride and groom perfectly,” she said. We butler-pass donuts, churros or cookies to keep guests on the dance floor.” SOPHISTICATED SWAG “Most of the weddings I do are destination weddings, so the welcome bag doubles as the guest favor. FRESH AND FANCY
D I N I N G. E N T E R TA I N I N G. AND GETTING OUT IN THE 305.
Rabbit egg rolls. Tableside fried rice. Japanese arroz con pollo. Secret omakase. A glimpse into Miami’s newest and hottest Asian restaurants.
F
rom speakeasy sushi dens to high-end Chinese haunts, Miami is enjoying a moment of haute Asian cuisine. Here, seven new restaurants that have been open less than a year and have already left a mark on the local dining scene:
CHOTTO MATTE Miami Beach At this Japanese-Peruvian import from London, don’t miss the Sea Bass Ceviche. “It incorporates the spicy flavors of Nikkei cuisine with super-fresh ingredients, and balances it all out with a sourness designed for the local palate,” corporate executive chef Jordan Sclare said. 1664 Lenox Avenue, Miami Beach; 305-690-0743; chotto-matte.com. HIDEN Wynwood To get in here — a sushi restaurant inside a taco joint — you need a reservation and a secret code. The omakase menu is super-fresh; sometimes chef Tadashi Shiraishi doesn’t know what he’s serving until hours before dinner. “We make our sushi rice with a blend of vinegars and rice that’s steamed fresh,” he said. “When you enter, the aroma of the rice is the first thing you experience.” 313 Northwest 25th Street, Miami; 786-580-4948; hidenmiami.com.

NOVIKOV Downtown Russian chef and restaurateur Arkadiy Novikov brought his wildly popular London restaurant to Miami this summer. The menu is ChineseJapanese, but with plenty of global influences. The King Crab Honey Truffle douses Alaskan king crab in honey and yuzu and smothers it in truffle butter. “The generous use of truffle butter and honey are a nod to French cuisine,” managing partner Philippe Moullet said. 300 South Biscayne Boulevard, Miami; 305-489-1000; novikovmiami.com.

PUBBELLY SUSHI Kendall When Puerto Rican-born chef and restaurateur José Mendín opened a new outpost of his hit sushi joint in Downtown Dadeland, Kendall diners rejoiced. His Tuna Pizza is
a fan favorite. “I wanted to make a Japanese-style pizza; something that’s comforting and delicious, but light at the same time,” he said. “It’s very simple, but everything together tastes amazing.” 8970 Southwest 72nd Place, Kendall; 786-369-5472; pubbellysushi.us. AZABU South Beach Led by chef Masatsugu “Masa” Kubo, NYC’s Michelin-starred Sushi Azabu now has an intimate space at the Marriott Stanton South Beach. Try the King Crab Toban Yakimeshi, an ode to chef’s childhood in Kansai, Japan. “It’s one of those dishes that gets everyone excited and creates conversation,” Masa said. “Once one table orders it, everyone around them wants one because it smells so good.” 161 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach; 786-276-0520; azabuglobal.com.
PALMAR Wynwood This modern Chinese gem, located in the former Cake Thai Kitchen in Wynwood, is accented by red lights housed in hanging baskets. Order the Rabbit Shiso Egg Roll. “We start by charring Napa cabbage in the wok, and braise rabbit with tamari, koji, Shaoxing wine, ginger, garlic, lemongrass and thyme,” executive chef Raymond Li said. “We serve it in egg roll wrappers with ají amarillo-infused oyster sauce.” 180 Northwest 29th Street, Miami; 305-573-5682; palmarmiami.com. At Sansara in Coral Gables, Sachi Statz and Andres Vega take a humble tropical fruit and make it fancy. WORDS BY CHARLIE CRESPO / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS
S
achi Statz and Andres Vega were destined to turn Cuban cuisine on its head. “In second grade, at my first communion, they asked all the kids on stage what they wanted to be — my mom loves this story,” Vega said with a laugh. “Everyone was like ‘Scientist. Lawyer. Doctor.’ Then they asked me, and I was like, ‘I want to be a baker.’” What else was he going to say? Vega spent his impressionable years in Miami’s La Rosa Bakery, owned by his grandparents since 1968. Similarly, Statz was just 12 years old when her mother and uncle opened Tinta y Café, and she spent her high school summers making cafecitos and bussing tables. Although neither saw themselves working in the restaurant world permanently, winding paths led them to meet at the Miami Culinary Institute. After graduating, the pair traveled to Spain to take internships — Statz at the top-rated El Celler de Can Roca and Vega at Barcelona’s Tickets — before returning home to Miami to launch Sansara, their popup restaurant that’s housed within Tinta y Café in Coral Gables.
RESPECTING ABUELA At Sansara, Statz and Vega are making food that is reverential to their Cuban roots, even if it may not always resemble the classics. They say they’re satisfying their desire to promote a region, a people and a cuisine that’s often taken for granted in the culinary world. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the greatest hits; they’re
58
delicious,” Statz said, rattling off mainstays like vaca frita, congri and tostones. “But there are so many other things that you could do that I don’t think people realize.” So, yes, you’ll find black beans on the menu, but they’re repackaged as a soufflé with chocolate and paired with arroz con leche ice cream. Maduros are there, too, only transformed into elegant gnocchi that’s finished with mint chimichurri. “When someone says, ‘This tastes like my grandma’s, but it looks different,’ that’s exactly what we want,” Statz said. “It’s better than saying it’s like Alain Ducasse. I hold grandmas in very high respect.” COOL AND REFRESHING The Sansara philosophy is encapsulated in its papaya carpaccio dish. Ingredients like papaya, mint and lime are familiar, particularly to Cuban palates. The presentation of thin-shaved papaya ribbons topped with icy granita and peppery arugula? Not so much. To re-create it, Statz and Vega advise using a firm, slightly ripened papaya. Cool it in a refrigerator for about an hour to make slicing easier. Look for local arugula when available. Lastly, be sure to start the granita the day before you plan to serve the carpaccio. With those tips, follow Sansara’s recipe to simultaneously savor the past and taste the future. PAPAYA CARPACCIO WITH LIME GRANITA MAKES 4-6 SERVINGS
INGREDIENTS ½ cup Green Chartreuse ½ cup sugar ½ cup fresh lime juice 3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar (preferably Thai vinegar)
2 tablespoons honey (preferably orange blossom) ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2-3 slightly ripe papayas 8 cups arugula leaves
1. Start the granita: Chill a clean baking sheet in the freezer. In a sauce pan, combine Green Chartreuse and sugar with 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil, whisking occasionally, then simmer for 1-2 minutes. (Use caution as the chartreuse may ignite; the flames will quickly die out.) Remove from heat, whisk again and allow to cool to room temperature. 2. Once liquid has cooled, add lime juice and whisk until incorporated, then strain. Pour the liquid onto the chilled baking sheet and return to the freezer. After an hour, run a fork across the top of the granita and return to the freezer. Repeat every 30-45 minutes for three hours. Freeze another eight hours or overnight, then scrape up granita with a fork and freeze in an airtight container until ready to use. 3. Make the papaya dressing: Combine vinegar, honey, cayenne pepper and 1 1/3 cups water into a small bowl and whisk until incorporated. Cover and chill until ready to use. 4. Peel papayas, then use a mandoline or knife to thinly slice papaya lengthwise, about 1/8-inch thick. When you begin to see seeds, remove them with a spoon, turn and begin slicing another side. 5. Fold about 12-15 papaya slices onto a chilled plate, then pour 1-2 tablespoons of dressing over them. Top with a spoonful of granita and a handful of arugula. Finish with salt and pepper to taste, and a drizzle of olive oil.

GROVEʼS
THE GREATEST GRAPES
Three Coconut Grove restaurants — and a gas station on the cusp — that do wine the right way.

pinot grigio from Ohio. A Spanish still wine that sparkles. An Italian white that stands up to branzino. A Bordeaux in the back of a gas station. INDULGE takes you on a wine tour of some of the Grove’s top dining destinations: ALMA Wines from Spain flow freely at Alma, the new Grove restaurant named for the Spanish word for soul. Imbuing palates with her exquisitely focused wine list, co-owner Maria Polanco, originally from Dominican Republic, operates the restaurant with her husband, co-owner and chef Sergio Chamizo, who was born in Barcelona and raised in Madrid. Among the atypical finds is the 2015 Ameztoi Txakoli de Bizkaia Hondarrabi Zuri ($45). Defined by an illusive carbonated zest, this still white smells like a dewy, summer

SAPORE DI MARE The harmonic dissonance of food, wine and language clangs through the lunch rush at this rustic Italian stunner. The mostly Italian wine menu reflects the country’s amazing value — many bottles are under $50 with the higher-end barolo and brunello bottles at reasonable markups. The 2016 Terre Stregate Svelato Falanghina ($38, $10/glass) from owner Giorgia Calabrese’s home region Campania is a lovely detour for sauvignon blanc purists.

EL CARAJO Like a tattoo on Coconut Grove’s nape, wine has many meanings at El Carajo. This bodega/gas station/ tapas bar offers sake and Sutter Home side by side, Champagne near the Doritos, and scattered Ken Wright pinot noir bottles close to the croquetas. In the back, a family-style wooden table sits on wine barrels as families devour piles of ribs among endless menu options. Find familiar and unfamiliar labels on the international wine wall. Among them, the 2014 Domaine de la Côte Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
ARIETE As a 15-year-old exchange student in Saint-Étienne, France, Ariete coowner and native Canadian Michael Falsetto sipped wine for breakfast. Falsetto eventually grew to love big and robust American wines, so the restaurant’s wine list offers standouts from lesser-known regions — like Ohio. The 2016 Ferrante Signature Series Pinot Grigio Grand River Valley ($46, $12/glass), for example, offers mamey and cantaloupe notes with a lovely mineral epilogue. Looking for a rich pairing for chef Michael Beltran’s signature smoked short rib? With its Christmas fruit-cake nuances and Amarone-style body, the 2015 Scout’s Honor Napa Valley Red ($94) is a favorite of INDULGE’s editor in chief. 3540 Main Highway; 305-640-5862; arietemiami.com. INTO THE LOOKING
GLASS
Miami attorney and history buff Joe Zumpano bought a private island in the Keys. Then he commissioned the world’s largest stained-glass table to depict the island’s rich past.
BY THE NUMBERS Cost of table: $30,000. Days to complete it: 500. Colors used: 107. Humans depicted: 21. Boat trips to deliver table: 16. Drinks spilled on it (so far): 2. Hurricanes survived (so far): 1.
J
oe Zumpano’s love for the Florida Keys stems from his childhood. He used to spend treasured days fishing and exploring the winding, turquoise waterways with his mother, Rose. So, when a string of islands located a few miles north of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo came up for sale in 2013, the renowned Coral Gables attorney jumped at the chance to buy the archipelago. He named the developed center island, Rose Key, after his beloved mom. The island chain and its nearby waters boast a storied past, including monumental events like Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Biscayne Bay and of the long-running Cuban exodus. Zumpano, a history buff, devised a novel idea to convey Rose Key’s history: He commissioned South Florida artist Noel Rosado to create a one-of-a-kind, stained-glass table that chronicles major local events, from 700 BCE to today, on five intricate panels. “When I thought about a way to share the story, for me, sharing means gathering friends and family around a table to have a meal together,” Zumpano said about the 30seat table that’s shaped like a C. “It stands for my mother’s last name, Canto, but the shape also allows people to sit on both sides, so it feels like an arm’s embrace. It’s like a welcoming hug, and that’s how I want people to feel on Rose Key.” WORDS BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZAK BENNETT

Top left: Attorney Joe Zumpano and artist Noel Rosado worked together to create a C-shaped stained-glass table that depicts the history surrounding Rose Key, a private island near Key Largo that Zumpano owns.
Size matters: According to the artist, it’s the largest stained-glass table in the world. Florida-ready: Built to be weatherproof and spill-resistant. Nice digs: It’s housed in a wedding pavilion tucked behind Rose Key’s three homes and a coral-rock swimming pool. Historic property: Rose Key is a former CIA safe-house and training area. Miami Vice filmed there in the ’80s.

HIALEAH
Jon Secada, musician
OK, so maybe Hialeah isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you set out to explore South Florida, but hear us out. Once described by Princeton sociologist Patricia Fernández-Kelly as “an affordable Eden” for exiles fleeing Cuba in 1959, the city is slowly but surely on its way to being reinvented. Most notably, the Leah Arts District — also known as the Artist Live/Work District — was formed three years ago with the intention of galvanizing the neighborhood through cultural experiences. Landmarks like the sculptural AmerTec Building and Hialeah Race Track, which is now Hialeah Park Racing & Casino, still coexist next to of-themoment businesses like Petit Pois by Viviana G. and Rene Ruiz Couture, just two of the haute fashion labels that manufacture their wares here.
Jon Secada crooned his way onto the music scene in 1992. A former protégé of Gloria Estefan, for whom he sang backup in the mid-’80s, he’s since racked up three Grammy Awards — including a 2017 Latin Grammy for To Beny Moré With Love — and sold millions of records. The Cuban immigrant came to the United States at age 12 and grew up in Hialeah. He holds fond memories of hanging out at Milander Park after classes at Hialeah High School and meeting up with his crew at Westland Mall.

The whole colada
“Delicias La Cabaña is right in the center of my old neighborhood. It’s a family-run staple where I will order an entire colada — one shot doesn’t do it for me — with una croqueta and maybe pastelito de guayaba to get the salty and sweet together.” 1442 West 49th Street; 305-822-0062; facebook.com/ restaurantedeliciaslacabana.

Days in Thailand Known as the Land of Smiles, this Southeast Asian country is also home to tropical beaches, cosmopolitan Bangkok and world-renowned restaurants.
T
hailand has become one of Asia’s hottest travel destinations, attracting more than 32 million visitors a year to explore its cultural sites, luxury hotels and natural beauty. It’s nearly impossible to cover the entire country without an extended stay, but there’s plenty to bite off in a week and a half. Our guide starts in the capital city and continues through the culturally rich Chiang Mai before wrapping on the relaxing beaches of Krabi. DAYS 1-4: BANGKOK STAY: Conveniently located, the five-star W Hotel Bangkok is a favorite of international travelers for its world-class spa and luxurious guest rooms. It’s also the site of the historic House on Sathorn, a renovated colonial mansion that today is a destination restaurant — on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List in 2017 and 2018 — serving innovative Turkish fare. Lebua Hotel, another five-star option, is famous for having the tallest
rooftop bar in the world, Sky Bar, at 820 feet. If it looks familiar, it may be because you saw it in a scene in The Hangover 2. EAT: Along the Chao Phraya River, Tha Maharaj is a shopping area lined with Thai and Westernstyle restaurants in Bangkok’s Old City. The acclaimed Mango Tree on the River serves
traditional Thai tapas infused with modern flavors. Cocktail enthusiasts should head to Vesper, an Italian-inspired restaurant with skillful mixologists who build classic and creative creations. Eat Me — a 20-year-old institution from an Australian owner and American head chef — celebrates regional Thai and international cuisines through sustainable ingredients. There are more than 40,000 wats, or temples, in Thailand, including the famous Wat Pho, home to the 150-foot, gold-leafed Reclining Buddha, left. The country also boasts pristine beaches, like Railay Beach in Krabi, top.

DO: For less than $1, take a ferry ride up and down the Chao Phraya to get a feel for the pulse of the city and its 8 million inhabitants. When back on solid ground, be sure to visit at least one of Thailand’s 40,000 wats, or temples. Some of the most important ones are located in the capital city. Wat Pho is the most popular, being home to the 150-foot, gold-leafed Reclining Buddha and more than 800 images of the sage. Wat Phra Kaew, aka The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, houses a much smaller but still impressive statue: a 26-inch meditating Buddha made entirely of a green precious stone and clothed in gold. The Grand Palace, where kings Rama I to Rama V lived, is open to the public for tours.

DAYS 5-7: CHIANG MAI STAY: There’s no shortage of hotels in the mountains of northern Thailand. A favorite of business travelers and others wanting to stay close to the city center is Le Meridien Chiang Mai, which has top-notch dining options at the on-site Favola and Latitude 18 restaurants. For a sense of ancient Thailand, spend your vacation at the Dhara Dhevi. The 60-acre property with 64 villas will take you back to the Lanna era and palace life, complete with architecture inspired by wats. EAT: Expand your palate beyond pad thai at the Thai Cookery School, which offers classes on an organic farm. Students first explore a large market filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, regional sauces, curries, spices, and hours-old cuts of meat and fish. Then it’s off to the farm to prepare dishes such as coconut milk curry soup, stir-fried meats and vegetables, spring rolls with glass noodles, and a sticky rice dessert colored with flowers.

For a story to take home, put your feet in a tank of tiny fish, which nibble away at dead skin for a unique pedicure. DAYS 8-10: KRABI STAY: Accessible only by boat from the mainland, Krabi has made a name for itself as a relaxing beach getaway with limestone cliffs and pristine waters — and without hordes of tourists crowding the sand. He’s a visionary designer, developer and builder. She’s a dedicated pediatrician. While their jobs couldn’t be more different, Manny and Dr. Brianna Varas approach their work the same way: They harness the power of personalization, and South Florida is better — and more beautiful — because of them. As the out-of-the-box builder and brains behind MV Group, Manny Varas has bragging rights to the interiors of glittery new luxury projects like the Paramount Fort Lauderdale and Miami Worldcenter. He also helped create the waterfront estates of rapper Lil Wayne, several NBA stars, and the globetrotting owner of Zuma and Le Petite Maison.
CREATING A VISION
These days, Varas, a Miami native who’s an alum of Florida International University and Harvard Graduate School of Design, views every new space like a blank canvas. “In our penthouses at Miami Worldcenter, we’re delivering them totally raw, meaning there’s not one wall, not one bathroom, nothing,” he said. “We’re able to take that empty space and really create what the clients want.”
88
INDULGE | AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018 | miamiindulge.com
Varas fancies himself a designer-detective, digging deep into the details of each client’s lifestyle. “Whether they’re single, married, have kids, or this is their second or third home, we capture what’s important to them.” From a dining room snuggled inside a wine cellar to a rooftop skateboard ramp, nothing is out of reach for Varas and his team. “Lil Wayne wanted an elevator that really stood out, so we created one that landed in a pond filled with nurse sharks,” he said. “It’s those wow moments that we try to instill in every project we build.”
PATH TO PEDIATRICS
Likewise, Brianna Varas applies that same personalized approach to medicine at Sunset Pediatrics, a concierge practice in South Miami with a global clientele. Unlike some offices where children and parents are herded in and out, the multilingual Dr. Varas takes time to truly get to know her little patients, and she treats each family as a whole unit. “When I was deciding my path in medical school, I couldn’t take myself away from the children,” she said. “I constantly found myself at their bedside. Choosing peds was a no-brainer for me.”
Varas, who completed her residency at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, is so committed to her patients that she went back to work this year just four weeks after giving birth to her second child. “I knew there were families who needed me. Having children of my own has made me so much more empathetic and understanding of where these moms are coming from.” At 32, Varas splits her office time with days at home so she can be closer to their two sons: Angelo, 2, and Nicolas, 9 months. She dreams of one day taking them on medical missions. “I’m very aware that there’s so much need in this world,” she said, recounting the 15 missions she’s embarked on in places like Haiti and Guatemala. “I want my sons to grow up seeing this need and understand they need to do everything they can to help others.”
BUILT AROUND THEM
What exactly does the home of a mega-interior builder and a concierge doctor look like? While it doesn’t have Lil Wayne’s shark elevator, the couple’s spacious two-story house in the Cocoplum neighborhood of Coral Gables — where Manny grew up and where his mom and brother live right down the street — is distinctly tailored to their lifestyle. “Our company logo is ‘Built Around You,’ but that’s our mission at home too,” he said, describing their luxurious refuge as warm and comfortable. “We wanted a space that we could utilize.” After entering through a grand, arched, wrought-iron front door, you’re greeted by a sparkling chandelier that delicately dangles from the foyer’s dramatic 25-foot ceiling. Strings of crystals, hung oneby-one, land at the top of a painting by local artist Alexander Mijares. The artwork was a wedding gift from Manny to his bride, portraying the couple wrapped in each other’s arms in front of a bridge that sweetly symbolizes their nuptials almost four years ago at Vizcaya.
In the couple’s kitchen, she wears a top and skirt by Karolina Zmarlak; shoes by Gucci from Saks at Brickell City Centre; necklace by Chez Carole; earrings and ring by Daniella Kronfle at Miami Design District. BRIANNA SAYS SHE WANTS THEIR SONS ‘TO UNDERSTAND THEY NEED TO DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO HELP OTHERS.’

FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Inviting white and beige-hued furniture reigns throughout the home. Some walls are adorned with paintings by Brianna, who majored in art before attending medical school. The entrance to the couple’s dreamy bedroom is a six-foot sliding barn door that’s always open, so the children feel welcome to wander in and Brianna’s friends can join her while she gets ready for one of the couple’s impromptu house parties. “We really like to entertain,” she said, heading into the kitchen. The nucleus of their home, the kitchen is where the Varas family gathers around a 16-foot onyx island with under-lighting that changes colors — red or green, perhaps, for a Christmas party; gold or blue when their mood is more mellow. Nearby, a self-serve coffee bar invites guests to make their own espressos, and a wine fridge is stocked with water and sodas. “People don’t realize that when you have guests over, they’re shy,” Manny said. “We’re creating a comfort level where someone doesn’t have to ask for anything. We want ours to be a home that guests can enjoy.” As for their own enjoyment, Manny likes to relax with a glass of single-malt Macallan in his woodpaneled mancave that’s fitted with an expansive bar. “I feel like it’s important to have one case of cabernet, one case of white wine and one case of Champagne at all times. You never know when you’ll have 25 people over.” As if on cue, the doorbell rings: a delivery of wine.

ith nothing more than the light from their cellphone flashlights, Jamila Ross and Akino West peered into history and saw the future home of their Copper Door Bed & Breakfast.
What started out as a scouting trip for a possible restaurant space quickly turned into a moment of deeper significance. Ross and West — a couple with a rich culinary and hospitality background — were touring the boarded-up Demetree Hotel in Overtown. “This is the place,” Ross said, goosebumps forming on her skin. “This is significant, historic Miami.” The namesake of Jimmy Demetree, a controversial figure in Miami history for his frequent brushes with the law, the landmark building at Northwest Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street had a backbone and soul that spoke to the young entrepreneurs. With a monumental vision and diehard work ethic, Ross and West — along with their partners at Barlington Group and Stilo Design — converted the dusty old space into a gorgeous new bed and breakfast that proudly opened its doors last month. CIRCLES AND LINES
You could say the seeds for Copper Door were planted more than a decade ago, when Ross asked to celebrate her 16th birthday with dinner at the Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York. Her mother obliged, setting Ross on a hospitality trajectory that led her to enroll in the prestigious culinary school, followed by front-of-house restaurant stints in Manhattan, Dubai, Kuwait and Miami Beach. West, meanwhile, worked his way up in the kitchen side of restaurants. He won a host of awards while attending Palm Beach Gardens High School, putting the school’s culinary program on the map. From there it was off to Johnson & Wales University, then stints at Michael’s Genuine, Ghee Indian Kitchen and the world’s top-rated restaurant, Noma in Copenhagen. Back in Miami, West and Ross got their feet wet for Copper Door by running a successful Airbnb property out of their home in Buena Vista. It prepared them to live on-site at Copper Door, managing the day-to-day aspects of a B&B from emergency maintenance fixes to daily breakfast menus. “Jamila is circles, Akino is lines,” said Michelle Setty of Stilo Design, perfectly describing the partners. Ross is big-picture vision and bright ideas, and West is the workhorse motor that gets it done. Opening page: Jamila Ross and Akino West opened the doors of their Copper Door Bed & Breakfast in July. This page and opposite page: Stilo Design provided guidance on key aspects of Copper Door, including wallpaper selections that feature geometric patterns and floral compositions, and in helping to determine what pieces of the property’s original furniture could be restored.

The two have been on site every day since their initial discovery. Barlington Group provided the property, Stilo Group’s Setty and Alexandra Muinos brought the technical know-how to coordinate all the moving parts, and Ross and West orchestrated the transformation into what it is today. “Every time I’ve given someone a tour,” Ross said, “they experience the same emotions that we did the first time we saw it. That’s history talking.” In Copper Door’s 22 rooms and suites, the partners have combined original and new elements that you have to see to believe. One guest room features complex floral-print wallpaper, while its neighbor’s walls sport crisp and clean geometric lines. Tile floors in gleaming bathrooms look original yet perfect, as though no one had ever walked on their woven patterns. While transforming the space, there were moments of discovery that no one imagined, like when they opened a room full of furniture from the original Demetree Hotel. The team from Stilo helped determine what was rubble and what could be repurposed, including a dresser that became the hot beverage station in Copper Door’s new lobby. They also were able to restore the original front desk for use in the lobby. Where other design firms suggested ripping up pristine terrazzo and turning the site into one more lifeless iteration of chrome and glass, Stilo helped uncover the mysteries of the old hotel and make them focal points. From the Demetree Hotel mosaic at the front entrance to
a hidden room accessible only to guests with a skeleton key, the whole project was equal parts reverence and innovation. B R E A K FA S T A N D M O R E T O C O M E
Out-of-town visitors to Copper Door will be feasting on food that will make locals want to rent a room just to partake in breakfast. West is whipping up lemon-thyme muffins with fresh lemon curd, and his porchetta breakfast sandwich might just be the best ham-and-egg iteration in town. Between Ross and West, these two culinary talents have been exposed to so much in their work and travels, there is no room here for onedimensional, forgettable dishes. An undeveloped space on the ground floor is slated to be a full-service cafe. And West plans to add a finedining component, called Il Sud, to the former bar located off the lobby. Upstairs, in Room 11, the windows afford a clean view of the downtown Miami skyline and the conveniently located Brightline train station. It’s a whole new city compared to what it was when Jimmy Demetree ran this corner. His building has been taken over by a new Miami, by a couple who represent the new class of creatives in this town. Copper Door Bed & Breakfast has refreshed a historic neighborhood, and it radiates with hope. The Copper Door Bed & Breakfast, 439 Northwest Fourth Avenue, Miami; 305-454-9065; copperdoorbnb.com.

WHERE CARS ARE THE STARS
IN MIAMI, LUXURY AUTOMOBILES ARE A WAY OF LIFE. REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS ARE APPEALING TO AFICIONADOS WITH STUNNING HIGH-RISES THAT TAKE A DESIGN CUE FROM CARS. WORDS BY LORI CAPULLO
Miamians love their cars — so much, in some cases, that they fancy the idea of living with them. Or, at the very least, keeping them as close as possible at all times. Recognizing this, savvy real estate developers have found a way to make our car dreams a reality. Collaborating with elite brands and engineers, they’ve masterminded residences that allow buyers to enjoy elements of their favorite luxury auto brands, even when they’re not on the road. Five homes where you can live life in the fast lane:
ASTON MARTIN RESIDENCES Set for completion in 2021, the Aston Martin Residences embody the refined exclusivity that defines the British brand’s custom automobiles. “While most car manufacturers mass-produce, at the center of Aston Martin’s message is that they are a limited-edition manufacturer,” said Alicia Cervera Lamadrid, managing partner of Cervera Real Estate, the exclusive brokerage for Aston Martin Residences. “For their first residential project, they wanted a premier gateway international city, and, of course, Miami is perfect for that.” Aston Martin hallmarks are evident throughout the building, such as hand-stitched leather pulls in the sales gallery that mimic those used in the cars. The gallery’s sofas are made using leather from the Scottish Highlands — where the climate ensures that hides grow thick and supple — the same leather used for the seats in Aston Martin’s cars. An enormous carbon fiber reception desk, which Lamadrid says cost “gazillions of dollars,” is one solid piece. But perhaps most awesome of all is the collectors’ line of completely customized DB11s that are being designed specifically for the building. And if you pony up to buy the $50-million penthouse, a track-only, $500,000 Vulcan — No. 14 out of 24 made — is included. Opposite page: A rendering of the Aston Martin Residences’ location along the Miami River. 1100 MILLECENTO Developed by the Related Group and designed by Italian engineer and automobile designer Paolo Pininfarina — think Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat and Alfa Romeo — and architect Carlos Ott, 1100 Millecento was at the forefront of the car-branded high-rise trend back in 2015. The 42-story luxury condo is outfitted with elevators (high-speed, naturally), ceilings, walls and floors all done in Ferrari’s trademark glossy red. Several of the common spaces in the building display massive blackand-white images of the legendary models designed by Pininfarina. The contemporary lines of the units call to mind the sleek silhouette of a sports car — precisely the theme this project was meant to convey — while the appointments of top-grade wood and Italian leather further the aesthetic. 1100 South Miami Avenue, Miami; 786-296-1300; millecentomiamibrickell.com.

PORSCHE DESIGN TOWER Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach is the only building anywhere where residents can take their cars into their homes. This is possible via elevators also referred to as “Dezervators,” named after developer Gil Dezer, who holds the patent on the lifts. “The idea was to make a building for people who love automobiles and literally want them in their living rooms,” Dezer said of his collaboration with Porsche. Each elevator services 44 apartments, but Dezer says lengthy waits are not an issue. “There’s an app that’s used to call the elevator in advance, and it will tell you how many cars are in front of you. If you’re first in line, it’s not even a two-minute lift, unless you’re going ground-to-penthouse.” So why Porsche, as opposed to another luxury car manufacturer? “I’m a big Porsche fan,” Dezer said, “and when you do these projects, you really have to mimic the brand.” To that end, the building was built using the same woods, metals, carbon fibers and leathers that Porsche uses in its vehicles. Added Dezer: “We even went to the point of reducing the Porsche Design perfume to an oil and diffusing it through the vents, so you get the scent when you walk into the lobby.” Specially designed elevators, top, deliver cars directly to residents’ homes. Porsche Design Tower even diffuses the brand’s scent through the building’s air vents.

THE ESTATES AT ACQUALINA Coast up the entrance ramp to Acqualina Resort & Spa, and one of the first things to catch your eye will be a line of gleaming Rolls-Royces parked out front. “People think we’re in the luxury car-rental business,” president of sales Michael Goldstein said. “Between Acqualina, the Mansions and The Estates, we have the largest concentration of Rolls-Royces — 59 of them — in the United States.” Because so many of the buyers at all three properties — including The Estates at Acqualina, set to open in 2019 — are car collectors, air-conditioned auto vaults are being built that will hold two, four or six vehicles. The Rolls in particular has become such an integral part of the culture here that plans are in the works for Braman Rolls-Royce to open an office on-site so residents can get their cars washed or serviced without having to leave home. And in case you’re thinking of buying at The Estates but you don’t have a Rolls of your own, the property’s house car is a custom velvet-red Rolls-Royce Ghost that will be at the disposal of owners who want to shop in style without having to get behind the wheel. 17885 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach; 305-933-6666; estatesatacqualina.com.

PARAMOUNT MIAMI WORLDCENTER Paramount Miami Worldcenter developer Dan Kodsi is reaching for the sky: He’s building a skyport on the mega-building’s roof in anticipation of flying cars. “After reading about Uber Elevate, we reached out to them to get more information,” Kodsi said. “They want to create skyports around the country. They already have a helicopter option in Dubai. So one day you’ll look at your Uber app, maybe in 10 to 15 years, and be able to choose that. The technology is already there.” Based on this intel, Kodsi decided to redesign the roof of the Paramount Miami Worldcenter while it is still under construction, enclosing a portion

ivide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.” Such wisdom from René Descartes, the father of modern philosophy, can be applied to nearly anything — even decorating dilemmas. Some rooms are awkward: too big, too small, or the ceiling is too low. A clever trick is to use a room divider. Screens can delineate open-concept spaces, creating separation for living and dining. They can shield a TV or home office, even make a low ceiling appear higher. All that, plus this beauty from Gucci Décor doubles as a work of art. Custom-made to order, the four-paneled screen is adorned with floral jacquard fabric on one side and bees on red jacquard on the other. Your decoration difficulties, divided and conquered. $28,000. Gucci at Miami Design District, 139 Northeast 41st Street, Suite 115, Miami; 786-915-8710; gucci.com.
