obsess over to-do lists. Completing them brings me unspeakable joy. Leaving them unfinished? Agony. Sometimes, to game my own dopamine rush, I add things that I’ve already completed to a list, just to feel the satisfaction of checking them off. Which is to say, this issue has left me with a giant to-do list. But this isn’t a checklist to agonize over; it’s one I’m actually looking forward to spending the summer — and beyond — conquering. I’m hoping to run through as many of our 50 Amazing Things to Do in Miami (p. 94) as I can, from a dip in the Venetian Pool and a morning at the dog beach to a World Cup viewing party and a candymaking class. While I’m confident I can get to most of the 50 that our team compiled, there are a few — like buying a brand-new Rolex from Baselworld and going skydiving in Homestead — that may have to wait a little longer (#goals). My permanent to-do list has grown since the January birth of our son, Jagger Skhy Benn. Heading into my first Father’s Day as a dad, I listened eagerly to the sage advice that our carefully selected group of Successful Miami Dads (p. 106) had to give. They talk about the importance of good communication and patience, about being a role Evan S. Benn model and teacher, about encouraging creativity and independence Editor in Chief and kindness and responsibility. Those are the makings of a lifelong to-do list that will be my most important and challenging work yet. Until Jagger’s ready for life lessons, we’re enjoying just playing with him and reading to him and capturing him in all his emotive expressions. Those are the kind of “decisive moments” that I imagine French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was referring to when describing the types of images he tried to shoot on his Leica camera. Cartier-Bresson would surely be impressed by the variety of souped-up options available on the new and fully customizable Leica M digital camera (Indulgence, p. 118). Buying one is probably something he’d have put on his to-do list — or at least on his Father’s Day wish list. I’ll leave you to make your own checklist out of this issue, and I hope that working through it brings you nothing but joy. After all, with a list full of ice cream shops, sparkling cocktails, breathtaking destinations and Miami’s top summer happenings, how could it not?

or me, summer in Miami is like a warm embrace that leaves you all glowy and happy. In other words, we know the heat is coming, but there’s no need to get hot and bothered by it. In this Summer edition, the team at INDULGE has sourced an array of places, products and people that can help you make the most of the summer season, and, yes, may even leave you wishing it were longer. Let’s start in Upper Buena Vista (Source, p. 44), an open-air shopping and dining marketplace, where you’ll long to bottle up the cool breeze that flows through on a summer afternoon. Here you can discover eclectic micro-boutiques such as Pure Soul, which features naturally inspired styles with a bohemian flair. Stay awhile and sample the delicious fresh fish bowls at Kraken Lab, or wander over to a spectacular 80-year-old shade tree, offering visitors a respite from the sun while they contemplate the rest of their day. Of course, when the summer sun isn’t blazing, it’s often raining, and we Miamians are accustomed to afternoon clouds that thunder into steamy showers. Lesley DeCanio But one of our town's real rainmakers is Rolando Aedo of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (Rainmaker, p. 47). Rolando and his team deliver buckets of summer fun by introducing us to chilled-out spas and remarkable local restaurants as part of Miami Spa and Spice months. And while I always enjoy some local R&R, planning a nearby getaway can really recharge the batteries. This month, our Staycation (p. 78) takes you from the Magic City to the Magic Kingdom, where South Florida parents inevitably find themselves at one time or another. We compare two luxurious retreats — the Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton — to determine which comes out ahead in various important categories. But with resorts this posh, how can you lose? Summer also can be a wonderful excuse to lighten up your wardrobe with crisp whites, straw hats and cool shades, like the must-have Beverly sunglasses from Alice + Olivia, showcased in The Local (p. 23). Style maven Claudia Miyar selects a handful of her favorite gingham pieces sure to make anyone’s closet a happier, hipper place. Prefer an even sweeter summer treat? While Ube Macapuno, Purple Rain and The Highland Truffle may sound like classics from an ’80s mixtape, tune in to Miami’s most intriguing artisan ice cream flavors in Dish (p. 65). We’ll show you where you can lick the heat with ingenious ingredients that will make your taste buds do a happy dance. And if you’ve never experienced a nitrogen-chilled scoop, head over to Lulu's in Edgewater and sample one of my favorites, Honey Lavender. Mmmmm… delicious and so refreshing! We hope this issue of INDULGE warms you up to summer and the bounty of options our city offers us. Explore these pages for treasures that, as the GMCVB's new marketing slogan says, can only be “Found in Miami.”

BLACK BOOK
Ria Michelle (@riamichelle), 31, belongs in the Cool Girl Hall of Fame. As a teen, she taught herself how to code and wrote an online diary that drew fans from around the world. Later, she parlayed a modeling career into a spin as a fashion stylist. And today she’s one of Miami’s top lifestyle bloggers, getting to travel the world and post pristine pictures of her always-on-trend adventures. “What my followers like best is a full-length, focused outfit post,” said Michelle, who moonlights as a personal image consultant. “But there’s always a new realm to explore. I just signed a contract with Carvel, so I’ll be an ice-cream ambassador for the rest of the year. I’m always doing something new.” Here are six of her beauty secrets:
FANTASTIC FACIAL
AFTERGLOW
LAPIS SPA AT FONTAINEBLEAU MIAMI BEACH “Dermaplaning is the best facial I’ve had in a really long time. I saw results right away. Even my boyfriend was like, ‘You look 12 years old. Can I have one of those?’” fontainebleau.com.
STARSKIN 7-SECOND MORNING MASK “Masks are so relaxing and great for self-care. I use these after a flight or just watching Netflix in bed. The serum in the pads feels really nourishing and leaves me glowing.” starskin.com.
TROPHY WINNER
FENTY BEAUTY KILOWATT FREESTYLE HIGHLIGHTER “Amazing for making skin look more radiant. It’s super-pigmented, so I just sweep a tiny bit on my cheekbones or the tip of my nose. There are more low-key shades than Trophy Wife, but I bought the most extravagant!” fentybeauty.com.
RENAISSANCE MANI
VANITY PROJECTS “I love, love this place. I keep a folder of nail-art inspiration — photos, patterns and colors — for each appointment. Either Rose or Leslie brings my vision to life and suggests ideas to make it even better.” vanityprojectsnyc.com/miami.
DANCE PARTY
RIHANNA “I need to get into the gym. I just can’t do it. So for an hour a day I simply put on music and dance. I have some pop and cool UK hip-hop, and Rihanna’s always in the mix.”
HEAD START
HAIR ARE US “My hair lives to ruin my life. My solution: Blowouts, braids, or a long, luxurious sew-in weave that I don’t have to think about. This shop has an awesome selection. It focuses on women of color, but everyone goes there.” hairareus.com.
Ask a Barber As the private barber of the Miami Marlins, Hugo “Juice” Tandron (@juiceheadzup) keeps the team looking sharp with pregame trims inside the stadium. Juice styles the rest of his loyal clients at Headz Up Barber Shop in Miami Gardens. With summer here, we asked his advice for the coolest looks for guys.

SPOTLESS A strong laser, sharp scalpel or frosty liquid nitrogen used to be the most effective ways to remove raised brown spots — those annoying growths that can crop up with age. The problem was, they all involved some pain and potential scarring. Now, dermatologists have a kinder, gentler solution: Newly approved by the FDA, Eskata uses a highly concentrated dose of hydrogen peroxide to do away with those pigmented lesions. “You carefully dab it on, it binds to the area, and over the next few days the lesion peels away,” said Dr. Christopher O’Connell of Skin Associates of South Florida, one of the local dermatologists now offering the pain-free treatment. “You might need a touchup, depending on the size of the spot, but there’s a good chance it will be gone.” eskatahcp.com.
1. What’s a product that works great and smells amazing? “Rolda styling gels. They’re lightweight, water-based and alcohol-free. And the fragrances are out of this world.” 2. Best razor for a clean-shaven head? “Gillette Venus ComfortGlide. Yes, it’s made for women. But the great thing about it is it fits into a Gillette Mach3 base, which I think every guy has, so you can just click it right in there. I usually use it with a fogless mirror in my shower.” 3. Tips for beard maintenance? “Go ahead and switch it up: a full beard one week, then a goatee, and if you still wanna mess around, a mustache like Magnum P.I. As far as it being hot? You know, it’s Miami. It’s gonna be hot with or without a beard.”
the local STYLE By Christiana Lilly
THE LOOK “I can fill my whole wardrobe from At Ease, which is very unusual for me, to go to a store and be able to pull an entire outfit. I love cashmere, I love cotton, I love natural silk; fabrics that are easy to wear.” 5844 Sunset Drive, South Miami; 305-662-1022; ateaseonsunset.com.

“If you want the extremes of very female-friendly Krav Maga and Gyrotonics, there’s only one place to go: Rinaldi Performance. Owner Melanie is a veteran of adoring women, of supporting women, of giving them tremendous amounts of strength.” 2753 Southwest 27th Avenue, Miami; 786-423-8314; rinaldiperformance.com.
THE CONVENIENCE “We use the EzFill gas app. Shareef said, ‘Go to bed, and when you wake up, your car will be filled.’ I thought that was quite brilliant. It’s like the gas fairy!” 305-791-1169; ezfillapp.com.
GABRIELLE ANWAR Originally from England, the actress (Once Upon a Time, Burn Notice) and philanthropist now calls Miami home. She’s discovered a plethora of places that keep her lifestyle effortlessly chill.
THE SKINCARE THE CAUSE “The Make-A-Wish Foundation is so important to my husband, [Shareef Malnik], and I’ve become very emotionally attached to the concept of healing these children while they’re suffering such horrific twists of fate.” 954-967-9474; sfla.wish.org.
“We’re hearing so many good things about Vitamin C. No BS’s Vitamin C+E Serum is amazing, and I will just rub it on my face throughout the day.” livenobs.com.
THE GROOMER “Luisito at Lovely Pets Grooming Salon is not only a groomer — he will deliver dog food, treats on the side, and he’ll remind me when to do flea medications. It’s like having a dog nanny.” 3098 Fuller Street, Suite 10, Coconut Grove; 305-476-8980; lovelypetsgroomingsalon.com.

Retail RETREAT Upper Buena Vista, Miami’s newest open-air hideaway, is your cool respite from summer’s heat.
T
his time of year, most Miami locals are looking for an escape. As the city heats up and the parties slow down, a trip to a far-flung locale seems less like an option and more like a necessity. But if staying put this summer is exactly what your hectic schedule requires, then you’re in luck. Nestled between the Design District and Miami’s historic Buena Vista neighborhood is a new, eclectic hideaway that resembles those dreamy destinations you’ve been crushing on all year long. Upper Buena Vista is the latest shopping and entertainment district to grace the Biscayne corridor. Comprised of microboutiques, beauty retreats and independent restaurants, UBV is officially open for sipping, shopping or just straight-up unwinding. A stroll through this open-air gem reveals that UBV is the upscale hippie hangout the city has been missing. TRAVEL-INSPIRED DESIGN “You come by here any time of day, any time of year, and just feel this magnificent breeze," said David Lahmy, co-founder of the development along with his wife, Michal Aviv. That soothing gust of cool air — so covetable in the summer heat — is thanks to the looming oak and ficus trees that inspired the couple’s decision to build Upper Buena Vista. The design for Upper Buena Vista was born out of Lahmy and Aviv’s passion for travel, artisan goods and what they call the Four T’s: Tulum, Tel Aviv, Thong Sala and Tokyo. Those influences are evident in retail huts that look like Japanese temples, bamboo trees that line the perimeter of the complex, a charming thatchedroof bungalow, and handcrafted tiles and stone finishings.
A tree canopy provides shade for shoppers at the new Upper Buena Vista, an upscale retail cluster with a hippie feel. More than 20 shops are now open there.
TOP INDIE SHOPS Of course, there are other reasons to visit Upper Buena Vista aside from the tranquil scenery. Downtown Miami favorite Fratelli Milano has a hip outpost at UBV, serving Italian comfort-food classics along with some re-imagined dishes. A rooftop bar offers a curated selection of cocktails and live entertainment. Longtime Buena Vista residents will be happy to hear that Claude Postel and Cory Finot, former owners of Buena Vista Deli, are back with a new spot for their French food treats: Café Crème. Looking to take your relaxation to the next level? Let a trio of sisters from Mallorca spend the afternoon pampering and primping your nails with fantastic art at Epoch Nail Bar. Or, walk out with a blowout or an edgy new look after a visit to Contesta Rock Hair. Pick up a fruity, frozen cholado from Colombian juicer Amazonica on your way to Pure Soul Design. The Puerto Rican boutique sells clothing, accessories and jewelry all sourced straight from the Caribbean and sure to add some boho flair to your date-night look. With an array of colorful retailers and exotic architectural flow, Upper Buena Vista is the perfect place to escape this summer — without leaving Miami. VITALS 52. Chief Operating Officer of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. Rolando Aedo was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and raised in Miami by Cuban parents. The fourth of six kids, Aedo married his high-school sweetheart, Katia. They met in French class at Immaculata-La Salle High School, where their kids, Isabella, 18, and Marcello, 16, now attend. He received his bachelor’s degree from Florida International University and an MBA from the University of Miami. Aedo was working in real estate when he applied for a contract position at the Bureau in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. “One thing led to another, and I’ve probably sat in every office since,” he said. Now, nearly 25 years later, “I’m blessed to have an amazing view overlooking the downtown and Brickell areas that I’ve seen grow up.” MOTTO “If it ain’t broke, break it. I have the DNA of an engineer, so whenever I look at anything, I’m looking to see how to improve its performance and results.” SUMMER IN MIAMI “Miami gets this bad rap about being too hot in the summer, but summer is an amazing opportunity to enjoy Miami and its world-class restaurants, hotels and spas in a very value-conscious way. We will have more spas than ever for Miami Spa Month (July-August), and Miami Spice (August-September) has grown from 25 restaurants to 250!” NEXT BIG THING “We’re ramping up toward the opening of the Miami Beach Convention Center in September after a $650-million renovation. This is a game-changer. We are finally going to have a world-class convention center to align with our world-class

amenities. We’re also putting our finishing touches on our bid for the 2026 World Cup.” BEST DAY ON THE JOB “It may be a cliché, but I truly am so excited to walk into my office practically every day. Seeing that I’ve been able to inspire some of my colleagues to evolve professionally has been the most gratifying thing.” BIGGEST CHALLENGES “It doesn’t happen often, but crisis communication is the most challenging part of the job. You can’t control it, but you can prepare for it. We spent a lot of time last year communicating on the Zika topic.” AFTER WORK “I come home and cook with my family. No matter what time it is or how tired I am, it’s not a burden. It’s part of my creativity, and it’s therapeutic. I’m always experimenting with different combinations of spices. My kids enjoy my special tomato sauce with ground beef, ground pork, cream and chopped onions — nothing from a can!” CELEBRATING FATHER’S DAY “I tend to be a homebody and spend time with my family, especially since my daughter is leaving for college soon. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep, our lives revolve around our kids. I’m definitely going to be very sentimental this year on Father’s Day. We’ll relax and have a nice meal.” DOLING OUT FATHERLY ADVICE “Besides the obvious advice about being responsible and careful, the one thing I try to instill in both my kids is to be passionate about what they do and always demonstrate that.” WORDS BY LAUREN COMANDER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

the movers Fontainebleau Miami Beach’s first female Vice President and General Manager credits her work ethic and hospitality know-how to her Irish upbringing.
M
ary Rogers’ father had wanted sons. Her parents ran a small farm outside Galway, a midsize city in western Ireland. Mr. Rogers raised heifers, young female cows, and had hoped for some strong boys to help with the work. Instead, he got a daughter — six daughters, actually — before two sons finally came around. “My father was like, ‘Well, I still need them to help out,’” Rogers said, “So, we all did chores before school. We milked the cows. We fed them. We went to school, came home, did our homework. And then went back out to help out where he needed it.” Decades later, Rogers is in a similar position — taking over a historically male role — as the first female Vice President and General Manager of Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Hotel management is a welcome shift from farm work, Rogers said, but it requires many of the same instincts she learned from the land. “My father instilled in me a great work ethic,” she said. “You show up. You show up on time. You give it your all. That’s what I carry with me every day.” DOING IT ALL Every summer during high school, Rogers took a job outside her family business, at a guest house in the nearby beach town of Salthill. There, Rogers worked the same schedule she did at home: seven days a week. “I thought everyone worked seven days a week. I just thought you worked every day,” Rogers said. “When I finally came to the U.S. and got two days off each week, I was shocked.” At this bed and breakfast, Rogers got her first sense of the significance of hospitality. “I did everything, from the cooking and serving of the food to the cleaning of the rooms,” she said. “But I also talked to the guests, and I realized very quickly the impact I had on people’s vacations.” Through chatting, telling stories, and doling out recommendations, Rogers realized she was good at livening guests’ leisure time, at helping travelers figure out how best to be themselves in a new place.

‘HAD TO BE PART OF IT’ With the encouragement of her boss, Rogers went on to get her degree in hotel and catering management. Two weeks after she graduated, Rogers boarded a plane to Tysons Corner, Virginia, to work at the front desk of a Ritz-Carlton. She stayed there for a decade, making her way up the ladder. In November 2008, she visited Miami Beach and toured the Fontainebleau property. “I was blown away,” she said. “The owners have a vision of endless possibility. I just knew, I knew, I knew, I knew, I had to be part of it.” Now, Rogers does exactly what she loved doing back in coastal Ireland: talking with guests. “My favorite thing about hotels is that you meet people from around the world,” she said. “In Salthill, I’d talk with people from Seattle and I’d ask, ‘Where is that?’ I was from this small Irish town — I didn’t know where parts of the States were. But now I do.” WORDS BY TARPLEY HITT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

But McKnight quickly switched tracks. “I thought the mural should raise the presence of Overtown, and focus on its history,” he said. McKnight grew up in Miami, after moving to Coconut Grove from South Carolina with his family as a child in the 1950s. adorning 3 MiamiCentral, just one tower of the six-block MiamiCentral mixed-use transportation center under development in downtown Miami and Overtown. MiamiCentral includes the Miami station of Brightline, the passenger train that runs between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Service to and from Miami began in May, and the line will eventually extend to Orlando. A BEACON OF ART Overtown’s past is steeped in music, art, and spirituality. It also is colored with events like the expansion of South Florida’s highways, which fragmented the neighborhood.
McKnight’s installations reference that cultural history, while focusing on the legacy of change. His work debuted in late March and shines like a beacon off 3 MiamiCentral. The installation is composed of two friezes and three murals. The aluminum friezes, on the upper portions of the structure, are overlaid with silk-screened images that reference black musicians, churches and iconic buildings. On the ground floor, McKnight digitally printed images across hundreds of kiln-fired tiles to create a colorful mosaic. McKnight collaborated with poet Femi Folami-Browne on a poem, Hope for the Future, printed across
‘IT IS A TRIBUTE’ McKnight wanted the installations to broadcast a message to as many people as possible. Whether from the train, highway or street, anyone passing by can engage with McKnight’s work. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University, then studied sculpture in London. His career in various media has taken him around the world as a rock and waterscape designer, and to the Miami MetroZoo, where he once designed and built exhibits. McKnight still calls the Grove home, and he now works out of a studio in Cutler Bay. When he first returned to Miami from London, McKnight joined the Miami Black Artist Workshop in the Grove. One of his standout memories of that time was getting to know the legendary self-taught Overtown artist Purvis Young. “Purvis was one of the people who gave me hope that I could make it as an artist,” McKnight said. “The collage method I used is a method Purvis used in some of his work. It is a tribute, in a sense.” WORDS BY NINA LINCOFF / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Andrea Mercado
Empowering the voiceless and registering new voters are her priorities as Executive Director of The New Florida Majority.
A
ndrea Mercado has made fighting injustice her life’s mission. Growing up in South Florida as the child of South American immigrants, she was angered by the inequality she saw in her community. She recalls hate-filled graffiti on the walls of her high school, and friends who couldn’t get after-school jobs or look forward to attending college because they were undocumented. She knew she wanted to create change. This month marks her first anniversary as Executive Director of The New Florida Majority, an organization that empowers marginalized communities in racial, economic and political circles. After graduating from Brown University, Mercado spent a decade in California working with immigrant organizations, focusing mainly on how state and national policies affect women and children. “The immigrant experience always interested me because of my own family experience,” she said. “I knew I wanted to work with people who were navigating the hardships of it but were also celebrating their culture.”
54
INDULGE | JUNE / JULY 2018 | miamiindulge.com
FIGHTING FOR WORKERS While in California, she co-founded the National Domestic Workers Alliance and helped get the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights passed in seven states, legislation that won the right to overtime for 2 million people, many of them women. Mercado moved back to South Florida five years ago so she and her husband could raise their two daughters near her extended family. She also took the reins of a National Domestic Workers Alliance chapter here. When Pope Francis visited Washington in 2015, Mercado organized and led a pilgrimage of 100 women walking 100 miles from an immigrant detention center in Pennsylvania to the nation’s capital. “It seemed like a really important moment to highlight the pain of the immigrant experience that’s caused by national policies,” she said. After the 2016 election, Mercado was appalled at how many people failed to vote. As head of The New Florida Majority, one of her goals is to get more minorities to the polls. Through neighborhood canvassing, the organization expects to register 30,000 potential new voters this year. “If Latinos and black people registered to vote
at the same rates as their white counterparts, it would mean an additional 300,000 votes in Florida,” she said. “It’s about expanding democracy and racial equity.” CONSIDERING THE FUTURE After Hurricane Irma, her team established a statewide coalition, securing $1.5 million to help the most vulnerable. They also walked the streets of minority neighborhoods, knocking on doors to find people who needed help. Mercado remembered one young woman who had cooked the last of her food to share with neighbors, and no longer had milk for her own baby. “Something like that makes you ask, ‘How can we do better?’” she said. Although she talks to her children about frightening events that happen in the world, she can’t always calm their fears. After the school massacre in Parkland, her 6-year-old announced that she didn’t ever want to attend high school. “We need to think about future generations,” Mercado said, “and the world and the democracy they’re inheriting.” WORDS BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS / SHOT AT MIAMI WORKERS CENTER

Dr. Flor Mayoral A board certified dermatologist, her passion for patient-centered medicine extends to family and the arts. VITALS “I am a board certified dermatologist. I have been in practice for 33 years.” SKIN MATTERS “My job as a dermatologist is to educate patients on the best way to take care of their skin. As our biggest organ, it requires proper attention and care.” BIGGEST CHALLENGE “Getting people to understand that the sun is BAD for your skin.” MEDICAL SPECIALTY “I specialize in cosmetic procedures and am considered an expert in the field of facial and body tightening with radiofrequency. In our practice, we use these devices to remove scars and stretch marks, and to change the contour of the face and body. It’s the small changes that we achieve with our treatments that are true confidence-builders for our patients. Quality of life is affected when patients don’t feel self-assured. I want my patients to feel comfortable in their skin.” COFFEE RX “We strive to treat patients as individuals and to make them feel at home. We make Cuban coffee several times a day for our patients.” RUNS IN THE FAMILY “I practice with my two daughters, incredibly talented and successful dermatologists.” GREATEST JOY “I love everything about my job, but my greatest joy is to make slight adjustments in a patient’s appearance, to make them look like a younger version of themselves. These changes are imperceptible to their family and friends, but they bring about positive comments from others. I like providing the confidence boost that they need — without the patient having to share their secret.” NEW GADGETS “Uneven skin tone is one of the most bothersome problems our patients face, so this year we have added a new Picosecond laser that can remove brown spots and even out skin tone, improve melasma and remove tattoos.” PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY “I have exhibited in a few museums in Spain as well as La Fototeca de Cuba en La Habana.” ART PHILANTHROPY “This year I also started the Doral Contemporary Art Museum — a nonprofit organization — with Marcelo Llobell and Ingrid Rockefeller. The three of us have been entrusted with the legacy of two artists: Nela Arias-Misson and Lisl Steiner. Nela was an abstract expressionist that was born in Cuba and studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown in the late ’50s. She passed away at 100 years of age in Miami. Lisl Steiner is a photographer — she was born in Austria, was raised in Argentina and photographed every important person in the ’60s while she worked for The New York Times. She is 90 years old and lives in New York.” Dr. Flor Mayoral, Mayoral Dermatology, 6705 Southwest 57th Avenue, Suite 314, Coral Gables; 305-665-6166; mayoralderm.com. On Instagram: @mayoralderm.

Dr. Stephen Grussmark
This esteemed orthodontist and INVISALIGN Diamond Provider has treated more than 20,000 patients in the Miami community. Dr. Stephen Grussmark has been practicing for more than 30 years. He has nine years of teaching experience as Associate Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Florida, and he is the No. 1 orthodontist INVISALIGN provider in Miami-Dade County. Grussmark is the first and only orthodontist in Miami-Dade to be designated a Diamond Provider by INVISALIGN and has treated more INVISALIGN cases than any orthodontist in the state of Florida. DO YOU DO PROCEDURES SUCH AS VENEERS, IMPLANTS AND FILLINGS IN YOUR PRACTICE? “No. As an orthodontic specialist, we are only permitted to do orthodontic procedures. Some general dentists do minor treatments with braces and INVISALIGN, however, an orthodontist will not do any procedures other than braces and INVISALIGN. They have completed two or three years of additional postgraduate training in braces and INVISALIGN, which gives them additional expertise in these procedures.” DO YOU TREAT ADULTS AND CHILDREN? “Half of my practice is traditional braces, and half is INVISALIGN. About 97 percent of my adult patients are being treated with INVISALIGN, and about 25 percent of my child patients are being treated with INVISALIGN. We have children as young as 7, as well as teens, with INVISALIGN.” WHAT PERCENTAGE OF PATIENTS THAT YOU SEE WOULD QUALIFY FOR INVISALIGN? “As a top 1 percent INVISALIGN provider, we have the expertise to treat essentially 100 percent of patients with INVISALIGN every day. I have patients tell me that they were told that they don't qualify for INVISALIGN treatment. This is probably because they have seen an orthodontist with limited INVISALIGN experience or a general dentist who does only minor cases.” WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF INVISALIGN TREATMENT? “INVISALIGN is very hygienic (there are no brackets to lodge food particles). INVISALIGN treatment is often quicker than traditional braces. It doesn't hurt. It won't affect your lifestyle. There aren't food restrictions. In our office, because of the amount of INVISALIGN we treat, the cost of treatment is often less with INVISALIGN than the cost of traditional braces.” Dr. Stephen Grussmark, Centre for Invisible Orthodontics, Merrick Park, 4425 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables; Dadeland, 8950 Southwest 74th Court, Suite 1214, Miami; Brickell, 1250 South Miami Avenue, Miami; 305-441-1200; invisalignmiami.com.

[TOP DOCTORS] She approaches cosmetic and medical dermatology with her patients’ best interests in mind. WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIALTIES? “I specialize in cosmetic and medical dermatology.” HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN PRACTICE? “I’m starting my fifth year of private practice.” WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE? “With cosmetic patients, I think it’s essential to begin from their perspective — understanding their personal, aesthetic concerns. My approach is to enhance their natural features, to understand and to stay focused on what brought them to the office. Then we co-create a course of action based on our shared understanding. It is important for the patient to understand that I am not there to fix them or change them according to my or society’s standard of beauty. So much what’s ‘beautiful’ is unique to each patient — to their one-of-a-kind set of features, and to their personal views and values. Beauty is completely subjective, and when someone walks out of the office, the most important thing is for my patients to be happy with themselves.” WHAT PROCEDURES ARE YOU MOST KNOWN FOR? “More than any single physical feature or procedure, I’m best at finding a harmony in order to treat each face as a whole. An essential principal of good cosmetic dermatology: the whole is always more than the sum of its parts. Staying true to this may be the most important factor in graceful facial aging. I like hearing from my patients how their friends couldn’t tell that they had work done, but knew enough to say how well rested or happier they looked.” WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED AS A PHYSICIAN? “Despite the constantly changing and confusing nature of healthcare, you can never go wrong if you stay honest and always do what’s best for your patient.” WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO YOUR PATIENTS? “Wear sunscreen each and every day, even if you’re not going to be outside. We get so much more sun than we realize, and it’s also been shown that even indoor light contributes to aging. Never use tanning beds. Melanoma is on the rise! And if you need even more incentive, sunscreen is the No. 1 anti-aging tool we have.” WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PRACTICING MEDICINE IN SOUTH FLORIDA? “I love the rich, deep diversity of my patient population. Within and among Hispanic cultures, as an obvious example, there are often these beautiful blends of Mediterranean, Native American, Asian and African features, which is especially fascinating when evaluating a patient’s cosmetic concerns. Maintaining the integrity of a person’s origin is tantamount to a natural aesthetic.”
Dr. Adriane Pompa
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE THAT THEY SHOULD? “Most people are not aware that we perform a variety of body contouring procedures including radiofrequency for tightening of skin and diminishing cellulite, sculptra injections for buttock augmentation, skin integrity and cellulite, and fat dissolving procedures like CoolSculpting and SculpSure.” Dr. Adriane Pompa, Mayoral Dermatology, 6705 Southwest 57th Avenue, Suite 314, Coral Gables; 305-665-6166; mayoralderm.com; cosmetics@ mayoralderm.com. In private practice since 2007, the board certified plastic surgeon gets his edge by treating patients like family. WHAT ARE YOUR PRACTICE’S SPECIALTIES? “I specialize in plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation, breast implants, breast lift, male breast reduction (gynecomastia), female breast reduction and breast revision surgery, rhinoplasty, labiaplasty and body contouring. As a plastic surgeon who performs aesthetic and reconstructive surgery on the face, I am well versed in the anatomy and the aesthetics of the face. When not in the operating room, I spend the majority of my time performing facial rejuvenation and lip augmentation treatments with facial fillers and neuromodulators such as Botox, Juvederm (Voluma, Vollure, Vobella, Ultra, Ultra Plus), Radiesse and Belotero Balance.” WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE? “It’s really very simple: I am myself. What you see is what you get. I do not try to sugarcoat things. I do what I was trained to do: be a doctor first and foremost. I listen to what the patients have to say, I am attentive to what it is they are looking to achieve, and I ensure they have realistic expectations. I take my time to explain what needs to be done to achieve those results, if possible. I discuss what I recommend for best results and see if that is harmonious with the patient’s desires. I thoroughly cover any procedure’s risks, benefits and complications for a proper informed consent. I never oversell to the patients. I recommend to them what I feel is best for them; nothing more, nothing less.” WHAT PROCEDURES ARE YOU MOST WELL-KNOWN FOR? “Breast augmentation and male breast reduction, as well as minimally invasive treatments such as Botox and facial fillers.” WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO YOUR PATIENTS? “Due diligence! Educate yourself about the procedures you are seeking to get. Make sure you are being treated by a board certified plastic surgeon. Make sure you see before and after pictures and find out what other people are saying about the surgeon.” WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE THAT SET YOU APART? “The practice offers a boutique-style service. I personally see and treat all of my patients from the moment of their consultation till the last post-treatment visit. The consultation is lengthy and informative. The patients feel comfortable and are not rushed during the process. I personally respond to all my patients’ questions or concerns during and after business hours, 24/7. I pride myself on being a doctor first, a plastic surgeon second and a businessman last. I believe that our outstanding services arise from the fundamental rule of being ethical and doing what is right for the patients without exceptions.”
Dr. Tal T. Roudner
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT SEEING PATIENTS OR IN THE HOSPITAL? “I love playing tennis whenever I have a chance. Sports cars have been a passion of mine since I have been a child. Summer, Plated Chef Adrienne Grenier’s juicy skirt steak with local vegetables is a celebration of the season. WORDS BY ERIC BARTON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS
I
t wasn’t that Adrienne Grenier’s mom was a bad cook. But raising two kids on her own while working crazy hours as a flight attendant meant that making a square meal every night was a struggle. Which is why, Grenier says, there was never salt in anything. Ever. “My mom, she cooked to survive,” Grenier, 34, said from her kitchen at 3030 Ocean in Fort Lauderdale. The idea that food could taste good, that it could be an outlet for creativity, that came from an aunt. Every Thanksgiving, she would show up at Grenier’s home in Hollywood Lakes to roast a turkey and make deeply seasoned sides that Grenier would devour. A BIO MAJOR TURNS TO FOOD In her last semester at Florida State University, Grenier switched majors from biology to food and nutrition science. A newfound interest in cooking led her to enroll at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s culinary program. To make money on the side, she got a job as a cook at 3030 Ocean, prepping ingredients for pioneering farm-totable chef Dean James Max. That was in 2006. Twelve years later, at age 34, Grenier now runs the kitchen as executive chef of 3030 Ocean. She took a detour from the restaurant for several years, working on the culinary team at the Eden Roc and competing in an episode of the Food Network’s Chopped.

“It was awful. I hated it,” she said of the TV appearance. “At least I won. That was great.” TEACHING, NOT YELLING Grenier’s quiet, calculated demeanor in the kitchen is all about careful planning and perfect execution. When one of her cooks messes up? “I try to show patience and show them how it’s done, the right way,” she said. “Nobody wants to go to work and get yelled at. I just don’t have the energy to be this beast. It’s not me.” And the right way to compose a steak dinner? Grenier starts with a flavorful skirt steak to bring out the nostalgic flavors of backyard grilling. Then she looks for seasonal and local vegetables to complement the meat — in this case, heirloom beans and peppers from Swank Specialty Produce in Loxahatchee. The most important part of the recipe, she said, is something she picked up along the way, from her mom’s weeknight meals to her aunt’s Thanksgiving feasts to her culinary school education: season with salt to taste. It’s a fundamental step that’s even more important when cooking light and simple meals like this one. Said Grenier: “This is kind of a celebration of summer harvest.” 3030 Ocean at Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, 3030 Holiday Drive, Fort Lauderdale; 954-765-3030; 3030ocean.com.
GRILLED SKIRT STEAK WITH CHARRED CORN AND PEPPER CHUTNEY MAKES 4 SERVINGS
INGREDIENTS 1 small yellow onion, diced 5 garlic cloves, crushed 2 cups roasted red peppers 2 dried Thai chilies or 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 cup white wine vinegar ½ cup white sugar
4 ears corn, peeled ½ cup snap beans ½ cup cherry tomatoes 4 sweet baby peppers 1 lime, juiced 2 pounds skirt steak ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped 2 cups baby arugula Olive oil, vegetable oil, salt and pepper to taste
1. For the chutney, heat a pot over medium-high heat and add two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Sauté the yellow onion and garlic until soft and lightly browned, about 8 minutes. Add the red peppers and continue cooking until almost dry. Stir in the chilies, coriander and cumin. Add the vinegar and sugar, and simmer on low for 5 to 10 minutes. Purée in a blender until smooth. Season with salt and cool to room temperature; set aside. 2. Toss the corn, beans, tomatoes and peppers in extra-virgin olive oil, season with salt and place on a medium-high grill. Char the corn on all sides, but take care not to overcook the other vegetables. Set aside. 3. Coat the steak with vegetable oil, and season generously with salt and pepper. Grill over high heat, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Set aside. 4. Cut the corn off the cob, chop the beans into 1-inch pieces and thinly slice the peppers. Toss the veggies with the sliced red onion, chopped parsley and arugula. Lightly dress the salad with olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper. Slice the skirt steak against the grain and serve over top of the salad, with the chutney on the side.
‘[Being on TV] was awful. At least I won. That was great.’
Chef Adrienne Grenier steps out of the way and lets the ingredients do the work in her grilled skirt steak dish. She serves it with a bright and crunchy charred-corn salad and a tangy chutney made from local sweet peppers.

ALL FIZZ, NO FUSS
The six drinks you’ll be sipping all summer have one thing in common: bubbles. Our fizzy favorites and where to order them. WORDS BY AMANDA MESA
APEROL SPRITZ
MOSCOW MULE
aperol + prosecco + club soda Although this mid-century thirstquencher hails from Italy, Parisian bistro Le Zoo at the Bal Harbour Shops stirs up one of the best spritzes we’ve found. Feeling adventurous? Amara at Paraiso’s Tulum Spritz adds a kick with chiliinfused tequila, Aperol, hibiscus agua fresca and Fever-Tree club soda.
vodka + lime + ginger beer Served in a chilly copper mug, this Instagrammable icon is a summertime heat-beater. La Centrale spikes its Italian version with Amare Montenegro. At Forte dei Marmi, the Fool’s Paradise riffs on the classic by blending Purity vodka with grapes, basil, lime and ginger beer.
VODKA COLLINS
vodka + lemon + elderflower soda
SPARKLING ROSÉ
There are endless ways to dress up a Vodka Collins. At Le Sirenuse, the elegant Fiori presents jasmine tea-infused vodka with lemon juice, Italicus Bergamot Liqueur, basil and kiwi shrub, and Elderflower Tassoni Soda. And the Garden Collins at Casa Tua Cucina pairs Bison Grass Vodka with berries, thyme, lemon and elderflower soda.
rosé wine Wine collector and Wynwood Oven owner Stefano Campanini suggests stocking your summer fridge with De Stefani Millesimato, a zero-dosage, bone-dry sparkling rosé from Italy’s Veneto region. Or head to Cecconi’s at Soho Beach House for a Rosé Spritz, made with strawberry-infused Aperol and Mancino Bianco vermouth.
GIN & TONIC
gin + lime + tonic Introduced centuries ago as a hopeful cure for malaria, the good-ol’ G&T may not have any actual healing powers, but on a hot afternoon it feels like exactly what the doctor ordered. Bazaar Mar has an exemplary version, with juniper berries, lemon verbena, Hendrick’s Gin, and Fever-Tree tonic. And Rusty Pelican offers five impressive variations of the original.

PALOMA
tequila + grapefruit + lime When it comes to Mexican cocktails, the Margarita may be queen, but the Paloma is our princess. MO Bar + Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental Miami keeps it classic: super-premium tequila with a kiss of fresh lime juice, topped with grapefruit soda. The Bump at No. 3 Social breaks with tradition, achieving a smoky-sweet balance with mezcal, Pamplemousse liqueur and grapefruit bitters.
APEROL OR CAMPARI
MAKE IT AT HOME
They’re both Italian aperitifs. They look alike. They’re bittersweet. So which one goes in your Negroni and which one in your Spritz? We asked Ricardo Rodriguez, a cocktail expert and the Miami ambassador for Angel’s Envy, to set us straight:
ST-GERMAIN SPRITZ
“Aperol is sweeter, more citrusy, and lower in alcohol. Campari is more bitter and has twice the amount of alcohol by volume.”
2 parts Martini & Rossi Prosecco 1½ parts St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur 2 parts sparkling water
1. Fill a Collins glass with ice. Add prosecco, then St-Germain, then water. 2. Stir, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve.

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS
Mark Pordes, CEO of Pordes Residential
The tiny northeast Miami-Dade town of Bay Harbor Islands has gone through an awakening. No longer a quiet stepping stone between Miami and the barrier islands, business is booming here. Condos are moving onto the waterfront, including Bijou Bay Harbor, 101 Bay Harbor, Opus Bay Harbor and Sereno, joining more than a dozen more. Beyond the luxurious properties, people are drawn to Bay Harbor’s sense of community. Children run through the splash pad at Officer Scott A. Winters Park. Restaurant owners and shopkeepers along Kane Concourse know their customers by name. Location is key, too, with Bal Harbour Shops directly to the east and mainland Miami to the west. They’re all connected by Bay Harbor Islands’ Broad Causeway, named after Shepard Broad, who founded the town 71 years ago.
Two of the town’s newest luxury developments — Bijou Bay Harbor and 101 Bay Harbor — are being sold and marketed by Pordes Residential. At the helm is CEO Mark Pordes, who has spent the past year watching Bay Harbor Islands grow. But not necessarily up. THE DISNEY DILEMMA
Miami families heading to Orlando can have a sumptuous stay at the Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton. But which to choose?
T
here’s no way around it: If you live in South Florida and have children, you’re going to go to Disney World. After all, what’s not to love about Mickey and Minnie, Cinderella Castle, and all of the exhilarating rides? The drawback, of course, is that it gets hot, the lines can seem endless, and the crowds rival those of Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Which is why you’ll need a proper refuge nearby — preferably one with super-comfy beds, multiple distractions for the kids, and upscale escapes for adults. The Ritz-Carlton and The Four Seasons are the pinnacle of luxury, and luckily both have claimed their stake in the Magic Kingdom. Our version of Who Wore It Best? will help you decide between these two top-tier retreats next time you visit Orlando: LOCATION The Ritz-Carlton is close and provides free shuttle rides to the parks. The Four Seasons is actually within the gates of Walt Disney World Resort, and it’s the only one there to receive the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award. Advantage: Four Seasons.

And let’s not forget the adults-only infinity pool that’s equipped with underwater audio. Advantage: Four Seasons. FAMILY FUN Four Seasons draws in the family with wholesome fun, something genuinely refreshing in a world where kids are addicted to text messaging before they turn 10. There are so many nooks and crannies bursting with games like pool, ping-pong and foosball, you may think you’ve stumbled upon camp (if camp came with killer cocktails and a lifechanging cheeseburger at the pool). Advantage: Four Seasons. FOOD The Ritz-Carlton is home to Norman’s, a culinary experience so exceptional, it is worth the drive to Orlando just for a meal there. Chef Norman Van Aken’s legendary New World cuisine highlights his diverse aptitude around Latin, Caribbean and Asian flavors, all under a steadfast French technique. The My “Down Island” French Toast — curaçao-scented foie gras on griddled brioche with savory passionfruit caramel — is one of those things you never knew you needed until you’ve had it. Brazilianstyle creamy conch chowder makes for an inviting Instagram post, and pan-seared yellowtail snapper is superb in its simplicity. Four Seasons wins Disney

IRISH FOOD: FRESH AND LOCAL Built in 1905 for the arrival of the Prince of Wales, who later became George V, the George V restaurant is Ashford Castle’s prized jewel. Waterford crystal chandeliers, royal blue velvet chairs, perfectly set linen tables and oak-paneled walls adorn the room. Overlooking the estate’s gardens and with the soft tunes of the resident pianist, enjoy an unforgettable meal of locally grown food prepared by acclaimed chef Philippe Farineau. Wilde’s at The Lodge is located on the Ashford property as well and offers a more contemporary take on Irish cuisine, including fresh seafood and lamb sourced locally from the nearby coastline and farms. Award-winning chef Jonathan Keane brings a creative take on some of the country’s most celebrated dishes. Off property, The Crowe’s Nest is a traditional Irish bar and bistro with a large selection of beers and whiskeys and live Irish music several times a week. The warm fireplace is a cozy spot for a pint before dinner or for a relaxing after-dinner sip. SHOP FOR FOOD AND ART If you plan a road trip beyond Cong, stock up first at Ryan’s Food Emporium (ryansfoodemporium.com): delicious Irish baked goods, breads, desserts, cheeses and wines. Everything is made in-house with ingredients sourced from the area’s best farms and producers. Angela Emsen-West’s Watercolour Studios (artmayo.ie) is a charming gallery and workshop that sells original watercolor artwork. An easy 15-minute drive from Ashford Castle, this is where you will find distinctive pieces for keepsakes or gifts. If you want to paint with Emsen-West, she teaches classes at The Lodge at Ashford Castle. Named one of the Queen’s favorite artists, celebrated painter and sculptor Rick Lewis (ricklewisart.com) has a gallery inside the castle. Lewis has been commissioned to create his nature-inspired art for heads of state and royalty and has art displayed in museums around the world.
GO FLY A HAWK Ireland’s School of Falconry (falconry.ie) is an exclusive must-do when visiting Cong. Located on the Ashford Castle property, the school has excellent instructors who guide you before sending you out into the woods to fly your own hawk. As you see your mighty hawk flying from tree to tree, sailing above you and then gliding toward your outstretched glove, it will be one of the most unforgettable moments of your life. Surrounded by forests, lakes and mountains, Cong is a nature-lover’s dream. Explore the plethora of hiking trails, bike the serene countryside or take a paddleboard or kayak around the lake. Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland, has 365 islands and is one of the most famous places to fish for trout. The nearby Cong River also has one of the best Atlantic salmon runs in the country. The lake also offers cruise tours, and guests of Ashford Castle can rent their 40-foot Italian luxury yacht to spend the day out on the water. On land, Ashford Castle hotel guests and day visitors can participate in any number of outdoor activities, including horseback riding, archery, golf, tennis, zip lining and a rare opportunity to climb “Monty,” a 110-year-old, 164-foot-tall Monterey pine tree. After being sporty — or in lieu of it — seek serenity at Ashford Castle’s glistening new spa. A co-ed relaxation pool is the most striking part of the graceful space, with a beautiful Tree of Life mural and a calming lake view. Couples suites, a hammam, steam rooms and a state-of-the-art gym round out the spa experience. Ashford’s 3,000-bottle underground wine cellar is built into a former coal bunker. Fully restored to lavish elegance, the cellar now features private tasting rooms, where one of the estate’s sommeliers will take you on a journey through top vintages. the life {DRIVE}
AIR TIME
Chef John Kreidich lives, works and plays in Miami Beach. So Moke America set him up with a classic beach buggy re-envisioned for a modern lifestyle.
O
ur wheels are getting raves on South Beach. I know this because as we turn the corner at Ocean Drive and Fourth Street, the crowd on the terrace at Local House stops and stares at us. We’re driving one of the only Moke buggies to make it to these shores. Originally a mid-20th-century British army vehicle, the Moke America has been refashioned to be electric, silent and eco-friendly. Then again, John Kreidich, who is in the driver’s seat, has turned a few heads in his 35 years, with or without a hot car. The handsome and athletic chef’s tan complexion speaks to his daily routine: a morning walk for coffee followed by a swim in the ocean or workout at Muscle Beach. Kreidich eventually finds himself in front of the pizza oven at The Alley restaurant, where he crafts some of the beach’s best Neapolitan-style pies. QUIET ENOUGH TO HEAR It’s a routine we replicate in the Moke. “The drive is so quiet,” Kreidich observes as we cruise our way to South Beach’s newly upgraded gym on the sand at Ninth Street. We’re in a car, yet outside, right in the middle of things. “It’s strange to so clearly hear the music from the hotels and restaurants, the wind through the palm trees,” Kreidich says, then adds an aside that pegs him as a true local: “… and those annoying squawking birds!” Life almost went another way — a decidedly less alfresco way — for Kreidich. In college, he majored in advertising and communications, and even became an ad exec. But it was his college minor in culinary arts that brought him briefly to Tuscany, where he learned to make pasta. The gastronomic itch didn’t end with that sojourn. “For six years I cooked as a hobby, working weekends for friends who’d opened restaurants. Then one day it just dawned on me. It’s a Saturday morning and I’m rolling gnocchi in a basement with a ceiling so low I can’t even stand up straight,” says the 6-foot-2 chef. “There I am, working for free and I’m loving it, dreading my office job. That was my epiphany.” CONSISTENCY AND CONTENTMENT That indelible moment a decade ago led him to last November: opening The Alley at The Betsy Hotel with none other than famed chef Laurent Tourondel, who oversees all of the hotel’s dining venues. The founder of the BLT and LT brands handed Kreidich his prized pizza recipes, including the sublimely decadent funghi and tartufo pie. “Laurent taught me that, for consistency, every step in making pizza dough is important,” Kreidich says. To watch him spinning dough as one of Miami’s most talented pizzaiolos is to witness real expertise — and true happiness. And the chef’s ride to work today reminded him anew of why he loves this delicious life.

DAD KNOWS BEST IN TIME FOR FATHER’S DAY, WE TOOK SEVEN OF MIAMI’S MOST SUCCESSFUL SINGLE DADS, DRESSED THEM IN SIZZLING SUMMER STYLES AND ASKED FOR THEIR PARENTAL WISDOM.

ALAIN PEREZ AGE: 46. LIVES IN: Miami Beach. CHILDREN: Kiahna, 19, and Samaya, 15. OCCUPATION: CEO, Eventstar Structures. WEARING: Brioni suit and Christian Dior shirt (his own), Ferragamo shoes from WOLF at Brickell City Centre.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR OTHER DADS? “There are a few tools that I’ve learned along this journey called single fatherhood. Three key things that have helped me maintain positive relationships with my girls are communication, having the best possible relationship with their mother and trying to keep them humble. These have been the method to my madness. “For me, communication is king. It is a recurring theme. Now, I travel a lot for work, but it is always important to ensure they understand that I am available to them, whether it is via text, email, a call or being physically present. I encourage you to let them know that you are there and present, even if you are on the go. If you happen to travel like me and cannot always be geographically present, never forget that you are there to play a role in their day-to-day lives and issues. I have found that situations arise, from school to friends to socio issues, and just creating the foundation and understanding that I am there makes a world of a difference. “I know this is not always possible, but I think it is so important to have a good relationship with the mom. In my case, although we are divorced, we still co-parent, and we consult with one another over any decision-making regarding the kids as much as possible. “Last but not least, I am currently working on keeping them humble. I believe dads should always take note of this. I am working with them on being self-sufficient and teaching them that working shows responsibility.”

WHAT DOES FATHER'S DAY MEAN TO YOU? “Father’s Day has always been important. I was born and raised in Italy, where family is super tight. Being a father, especially the father of a little girl, is the most important thing. I’m surrounded by powerful women every day. Having the ability and the responsibility to be a father to one of these powerful women comes from my mom and my mom’s mom, who are powerful women. “I feel like I have a huge responsibility, and I take being a father as my job. A lot of people put their careers or other things first. When her mom and I split up, my role became being this little kid’s superhero for her to look up to. We celebrate Father’s Day, but I don’t know that we necessarily celebrate it more than anything else. I was involved in a bad accident in 2007, when Milla was just a few months old, and I spent 10 hours not knowing if I was going to walk again. I had to restart a whole bunch of sections of my life through recovery, so I celebrate every day, every moment. “I definitely see fatherhood as the most important role in my life. There are a lot of dads who aren’t really there for their kids. It’s good to put an emphasis on the dads out there who give 100 percent.”
DJ WILLIAMS AGE: 35. LIVES IN: South Miami. CHILDREN: Alessandra, 5, and Adara, 4. OCCUPATION: Founder and CEO, Dyme Lyfe. WEARING: Penguin shirt and Armani shoes (his own), WOLF pants from Brickell City Centre.
WHAT ADVICE FROM YOUR DAD HAS MADE YOU A BETTER FATHER? “The No. 1 thing passed on to me by my father was to always let your kids be kids. You want to teach them life lessons and instill values, and sometimes it works best if you can make it fun. For example, I teach them math using money. Kids love to touch everything, so I let them hold a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar — counting out the multiple denominations. By playing with it, they’re learning about the value of money and learning math at the same time. “One of the most difficult parts of being a single dad is when you have a sick child, because all they want is their mother. That really makes you appreciate what moms go through. I am very grateful for my girlfriend Christina’s daily guidance. I don’t know what I would do without her. “The most rewarding part is when my kids make me feel that I am their protector. They draw me portraits. They always make me big, with muscles. I love the details they put into it. And you can’t throw them away, so I keep a box full of drawings, which I cherish. “On Father’s Day, I like to keep it simple. I like going to brunch, coming home, getting in the pool and relaxing. I don’t like to be catered to; I like for everyone to celebrate being together.”
SERGIO ANDRÉS MENDOZA AGE: 39. LIVES IN: Key Biscayne. CHILDREN: Sergio Michael, 6, and Anaïs, 3. OCCUPATION: Founder and Designer, Pharaoun Jewelry. WEARING: Castangia jacket, Ralph Lauren pants, Massimo Dutti shoes and Uniqlo shirt (his own); Acqua di Parma bag from Brickell City Centre.
WHAT CAN EVERY DAD DO TO BE A BETTER FATHER? “As a single dad, it’s important to realize what’s missing from your children’s experience and to reach out to friends and family who can help fill the parts that might be hard for you to do yourself. For example, my kids’ aunts, or people that we consider aunts, bring a lot of feminine energy to my daughter and to my son. You’ve got to reach out to get the parts that maybe you’re not that strong at. “As a parent, there are certain things you want for your children that maybe you need to find elsewhere. It could be someone who is more artistic, athletic or patient — whatever you want to bring into your children’s life. “I think equally important is looking for opportunities to enrich their experiences. When your children show momentum, one of the best things that a parent can do is carry that momentum forward. Their world is limited, so if they find something that means something to them, one of the things you have to do as parent is expand that part of their world. "I may be a single dad now, but my life is all about powerful women. My sister, my mom, my grandmothers, my daughter. My wife, Sarah, was one of them, too. I’m really trying to channel that into the next stage of my life. I have a jewelry company, and it’s all about powerful, independent women feeling beautiful. It started with Sarah alive, and it’s kind of come into its own this year.”
MIKE GIBALDI AGE: 56. LIVES IN: Miami Beach. CHILDREN: Calypso, 25, and Sophia, 23. OCCUPATION: Treasurer, Surfrider Foundation Miami Chapter. WEARING: Ermenegildo Zegna jacket, shirt and pants from Zegna at Bal Harbour Shops, Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers from Zanotti at Brickell City Centre.
HOW HAS BEING A FATHER SHAPED YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE? “Being a father reinforces consciousness, caring and nurturing. How you raise your children is not only a reflection on yourself; it’s what goes out into the world and continues to make it a better place. Calypso works in high-end retail in the Design District, and Sophia is exploring, traveling, working and volunteering. She’s been through Southeast Asia, she’s in Australia now, and applying her organic farming horticulture degree. “They’ve come out and participated with me at some of the Surfrider events and the volunteer activities that we do. I have a great photo of the three of us holding hands on the beach during Hands Across the Sand. That’s a global, peaceful movement to protest against offshore drilling and dirty fossil fuels and to advocate for clean and renewable energy. They’re well-rounded kids, contributing to society, and I’m very proud of them. “I’ve tried to teach them about not going to extremes and about keeping a cool head in difficult situations. As they were growing up, if they misbehaved or got in trouble, there were consequences. But it wasn’t so crazy to scare them away or damage the communication of our relationship.”

MIKE ROMEU AGE: 39. LIVES IN: Cutler Bay. CHILD: Melody, 6. OCCUPATION: Founder and CEO, Sweet Melody Crafted Ice Cream Co. WEARING: Jacket by Stitched at Brickell City Centre, Alexander McQueen shirt from Neiman Marcus at Merrick Park and Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers from Zanotti at Brickell City Centre; Acqua di Parma bag from Brickell City Centre.
WHAT ARE THE HARDEST AND MOST REWARDING PARTS OF BEING A SINGLE DAD? “I tend to be the nostalgic type. My parents will be together 50 years, this year. It’s hard that I can’t give that to Melody. When she was 1 or 2, she would wake up between both of her parents, and that doesn’t happen anymore. That’s the hard part for me. I long for her to have that. “The rewarding part is that she’s literally my best friend. We go everywhere together. We do things together. She’s learning how to bake, learning things in the kitchen. There are times when she has her moments, when I’m too busy and she gets a little sad, but for the most part, the ice cream business has brought us closer together. The most rewarding part is that it’s just us. Our bond has become stronger because of that. “The biggest value I want to teach her is hard work. If this business were to take off and we have, like, 100 stores, I’d still want her to mop the floors. I think there’s no shortcut to that. It builds something within you that makes you a better person overall. There are times when it’s like, ‘Get in the car — we’ve got to make a delivery!’ She’s had to sit in on meetings. It’s not ideal, but I’m seeing that she’s recognizing those things, and that’s what I want to teach her the most: kindness and the value of hard work.”

WHAT DOES FATHER’S DAY MEAN TO YOU? “Father’s Day is a reminder of the dedication, love and passion that I have for my kids. It’s a day to take a step back and reflect on the admiration that I share for my three children on an individual level. “Father’s Day is also special for me as it’s nice to get a little pampered by them on this one day. That surely never hurts. I love how creative each of them are when it comes to their surprises. Although I’m always extraordinarily present in their lives, it is an opportunity to be extra focused during my time with Ellie, Gabriel and Veronica. “When I play with them and we read their favorite books and I listen to their stories, it is a constant reminder that I am the luckiest man in the world. When I look at them on Father’s Day or any day, I am proud of the job I have done as a father. They are truly what I live for, and Father’s Day gives me an opportunity to be grateful and feel blessed for the love we all share as a family unit.”

P
hotographer Henri Cartier-Bresson pioneered street photography and the notion that a good candid shot was about capturing a decisive moment. “To me,” he said, “photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event.” Cartier-Bresson carried his lightweight Leica everywhere, creating images with excellent results. Since 1914, Leica has set a standard for heirloom-quality cameras. The classic M series — the modern digital version of Cartier-Bresson’s trusty rangefinder — is made even more desirable thanks to Leica’s à la carte service. Customize your camera with premium leather wraps, 11 different strap colors, sapphire-glass LCD covers, personal engravings and more. Configure it online or in person, then wait a few weeks while your camera is handcrafted in Germany. Your unique Leica M will be a memory in itself. So will the incredible images you capture of the decisive moments in your life. Starting at $6,380. Leica Store Miami, 372 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables; 305-921-4433; leicastoremiami.com.
