I. jewel film house + cultural center deep deuce, oklahoma city
semester IX
The Jewel Theatre was originally built in 1931 by Mr. and Mrs. Percy James who were also the owners of the only black owned bottling company in OKC. Before integration, the Jewel served as an important asset to the community as one of the two theaters in the NE business district. Eventually, they retired from handling the building and sold it over to Clinton Newton. Over his years of patronage, Mr. Arthur Hurst, after making his interest clear to Mr. Clinton, purchased the theatre in 1982. This project proposes the restoration of the existing Jewel as a cultural icon in addition to a new theatre, gallery, and educational space. To relate the form to the program, the architecture consists of a series of frames that inform circulation and provide views into and through the interior spaces and outside into the adjacent public park space.

the frame as an architectural language Film directors use many techniques to create scenes that immerse the audience, but maybe the most obvious of these techniques is the use of the frame. Frames can be used alone or in tandem with other frames to create focused views, a language that is often found within architecture as well as film. How, as a cinema house, can this idea of frames become inherent in the architecture to create spaces that relate to the action of film making and viewing?

With the reintroduction of the Jewel Theatre as a cultural landmark, a structure that has stood vacant for so long has the potential to breath new life into the historically resource- shorted neighborhood of North East Oklahoma City. The expanded Jewel Theatre and Cultural Center will act as a beacon for the arts and give back to the community and residents of NE OKC a place to reclaim as their own.

II. norman/moore center for resilient design education norman, ok
semester VII
Driven by COTE 10 measures, the Norman/Moore Center for Resilient Design Education provides users with a new perspective towards sustainable architecture. Inhabitants are encouraged to explore the building to understand how preexisting site conditions can provide for passive design strategies. Operable fenestration lines the envelope of the building to allow for natural ventilation, and south facing glazing lets in winter sun, heating the building; these strategies reduce the size and need of HVAC systems. When it rains, water is collected and stored in a cistern that sits on display on the ground adjacent to the southeast corner of the building. In the showroom, these design strategies are outlined and explained through demonstration and exhibition to make visitors more aware of the ways we can begin to reduce our footprint. As an educational facility, the architecture has an obligation to transparently convey the techniques that the architect uses to meet its environmental

III. norman center for wellness norman, ok
semester V
The site, located just north of Highway 9 and just south of Lloyd Noble, consists almost entirely of a riparian area which the project intends to simultaneously protect and beautify. The Norman Center for Wellness is a multi-use facility with the idea of personal growth and mental health at its core. Visitors are encouraged to linger and reflect on themselves as well as their experience from the time of they’re arrival. Exterior views are framed by natural materials creating a safe, tranquil, and natural place for contemplation and healing.

IV. hyperloop oklahoma city, ok
semester VI
With an emphasis on ease of access, connection to nature, and psychological comfort, this project provides an uncomplicated interface to travel and living. The housing and station programs are separated with a park in between them to distinguish the beginning and end of a journey with a traversal through an outdoor space. Those arriving via Hyperloop are greeted first by this outdoor space followed by a large restaurant alongside a translucent entrance at the base of the elevator tower which doubles as a sun room and triples as a vestibule. A major focus for the project was to incorporate building materials that would not only sustain among a world seeing rapid technological development, but that would provide a deep level of safety and security with its expression throughout the building. This manifested as a mixture of uses between a heavy, stereotomic base (concrete) and a light, upward seeking tectonic structure (cross laminated timber.) This mixture of materiality expresses a confident and harmonious relationship with the earth, successfully nurturing its inhabitants.

broad pots 2020 Broad Pots was a collaborative project between my brother and I. We were on a mission to favorably place beautiful objects in folks’ lives while encouraging healthy, creative habits. In addition to selling at our local farmers market, we made deliveries personally to accommodate Covid-19 concerns.

the green stink bug 2018 A conceptual ‘habitat’ designed to provide for the most basic, and therefore crucial, survival needs of the assigned insect. The green stink bug, in this case, has three basic survival needs that fuel every decision that the insect makes: nutrition, access to sun and shade, and reproductive opportunity. Taking these needs into account as a means of program as well as considering preexisting habitats as precedent drove the design to its final manifestation.
