Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, When I was younger, I would always day dream of myself in the latest styles in fashion. I would especially want to look just like the girls in the Limited Too catalog that I would receive each month. Unfortunately my family could not afford the clothes I coveted and I became a victim of handy downs. Although I wore handy downs, thanks to my grandma I learned how turn recycled clothes into the latest trends. She would always tell me, “Honey since you can’t buy, make it yourself.” By creating my own DIY styles, I learned how to create trendy looks and also save money. In this issue of DIY, I have put together my favorite DIY projects of this month. I hope you will find one that you
will want to create. Enjoy,

DIY: Color Blocked Painted Shoes

Materials Needed: A pair of shoes you want to transform Gold metallic spray paint Painter’s Tape Newsprint or newspaper Pink acrylic or fabric paint (Or the color of your choice)
Instructions 1. Start with your shoes. These were faux suede and practically new, so I didn’t have to clean them up too much. If you need to, wipe them with a damp soft cloth to clear away any dust or dirt. 2. Tape off the toe section with painter’s tape. I cut the tape into smaller sections to be able to follow the curve more precisely.

3. Mask off the rest of the shoe with the newsprint. 4. Cover the toe section with the gold metallic spray paint. Do this in light layers – putting on thick layers will prevent the paint from drying and applying evenly. Depending on the material this could lead to drip marks. Faux suede is very craft friendly when it comes to being spray painted – other slicker surfaces will not be as forgiving. Let dry completely. 5. Repeat steps 2-3 for the next section to be painted. If you use another spray paint, mask off the toe as well. I used acrylic paint and a paint brush for this section. Paint the entire section, let dry, and do a second layer for a brighter and more even color. Let dry. 6. Voila! Easy color-blocked shoes. Are you loving these flats as much as I am? What’s at the top of your wish list lately?

Materials:

•
various sized brass rings
•
neon nylon mason line cord
•
scissors
•
lighter
Step: 1 Start by laying out a pattern.
Step 2: Line up two brass rings. Cut a 12 inch piece of cord and connect the two rings by wrapping around them 4-5 times. Pull tightly and tie into a double knot. Trim the ends.
12
Step 3: Now for the crafty trick - take a lighter and burn the tips of the knot until the nylon starts to melt. Then immediately press the bottom of the lighter against the melted tips onto the backside of the wrapped cord, sealing the knot.
Step 4: The first section is complete. Align another ring and repeat the process. Continue to add more rings, wrapping each connecting section .
13
Step 5: When the pendant of the necklace is finished, cut two 40″ pieces of cord. Fold a piece in half, pull the center loop through top of the upper right ring, fold it over the ring, and pull the rest of he cord through the loop. Repeat this step on the opposite side.
Step 6: Your necklace is finished! Enjoy
