The word ‘town’ has a special meaning that can not be simply defined as a place of residence. Memories of the town where we spent our childhood and adolescence are underlying everything we carry out, and we are always living in the present, missing the distant days of nostalgia. This project was started from a deeply personal point, affection of the town where I grew up for a long time. The memories of the battered apartments, well-shaded green in-between and unpaved trails make me feel like walking in the town one day. And maybe I wanted to get somebody else’s sympathy for the pleasure of walking in the town, or speak out sadness about the neighborhood, where I will never be able to stroll through again with the redevelopment.

Gaepo Municipal Library Jugong Apartment Complexes were constructed by the Korea Housing Corporation in 1983 as a large-scale public housing project in the Gangnam district of Seoul. It’s been over 30 years since they were built, and whole apartment complexes are now in the procedure of demolition and reconstruction. The neighborhood where more than 30,000 people lived part or all of their life is turning into something else for a moment, but this change is inevitable for the better residential environment and economical profit of the proprietors. Nevertheless, I feel the need to leave something to remember the existence of the old town. There is a municipal library that settles in a blank of the town where the redevelopment did not reach. The library is outdated as it was built in the same time with the complexes, but it has a geometrical shape like an objet and a dramatic large space inside. I decided to leave this library as a trace of the old town, and planned the renovation and expansion.

Design Process

Existing library consists of three parts : the central part with main hall and administrative offices, and the both sides with bookstacks and accessory facilities. Compared to the central part with a large space with compartment ceiling, other two parts look like they were stuck in an awkward manner. So I planned to leave only the central part as the nucleus of expansion. The central part will be used as a single large space with lobby and bookstacks by demolishing all inner walls except for the structural ones.

Despite having the advantage of being in contact with the main road of the village, the existing library seems somewhat isolated. This is because visitors are required to climb one storey high to enter the interior of the library, and the building is surrounded by the ridges, making it impossible to enter beyond the main road. In order to increase the accessibility of the library, a ramp connecting the village’s main road with the promenade at the rear is planned. As the ramp is extended to the main road and planned inside the building, visitors can enter the library directly from the main road level. The ramp is another walkway in the neighborhood, which makes the library a familiar space for redsidents.

Short interval of low-rise apartments possibles face-to-face planning pattern. Facing apartments have entrances in the interspace, and funtion as a unit. The repitition of these units again creates a space facing back of the apartments. This results in spaces of different characteristics on the front and back of the apartment. In the extension of the library, the spaces used for specific purposes are laid out in the same way as the apartments, and the interspaces are used as paths and open stacks of contradictory characteristics.

Each interspace is reinterpreted as a universal sense of spaces with ceiling of different forms. Whereas the space facing the entrances is a large scale space like a lobby with a vaulted ceiling, another space is a quiet reading space with an inner court. The Library, In the Town

The existing building, including the openings, is fully coverd with metal fabric louvers with 50mm spacing, leaving only the silhouette and rough surface of the building. / It’s the symbol of the old town, where the geometric form of the original building is emphasized.

On the facades of the city, we can see the superficial appearance, and also infer the internal structure to some extent. Such structures may be revealed in detail in the form and use of the respective building, and roughly at the density of the entire facade. This project aims to study how a small change in the density strengthen the characteristics of the area, and how the change is extended inward. The main street from Sejong-ro to Taepyeong-ro is the largest road of the Seoul Metropolitan City, and two areas facing the road have conflicting characteristics. In contrast to the commercial areas of the other side, in Jeong-dong area, where the site is located, historical landmarks and cultural facilities are located in low density. The external change that loosens the facade further strengthens this difference and slightly exposes the scenery inside. The scheme aims to make the best use of the scenery of the old city and preserve the ambience of the original building, rather than standing out as a new one.

Unlike other parts of the city, 'Square' fulfills its function best when it is empty. The site of this poject is a slender empty lot, that lies in the middle of the city's largest and most important road with 10 lanes, and in time of need, it is expanded to the road of both sides and whole of the space is used as a large square . The requirement was to design a culture center for citizens and visitors on it. In fact, building something in the square can discolor the essence of the square, which has to stay empty for its function. So naturally, where I started from was not the way of filling required programs in the site, but rather answering the question, how to empty the square, when we necessarily have to build something in the square. Instead of designing a single long building after the shape of the site and splitting the square into two, the short walls perpendicular to the site's axis are placed on the site.

More than we've thought, people like shades more than sun-drenched spots, and feel better in their secret places than in the crowd. When designing a visitors center located at the entrance of the university, I decided to plan a hidden courtyard surrounded by high walls, rather than opening wide toward the flow of human traffic. The courtyard and each program of the visitors center stay visually blocked from the outside, but they are very open toward the inner courtyard. It becomes a private external space that seems to be independent of the busy surroundings, which is recognized as a more personal and intimate space for the users.
