We celebrate our first year of publishing with this summer issue. Thanks to everyone who continues to support our grassroots, one-of-a-kind magazine. It seems there is still question about "what" B.Real Magazine is. It is a do-it-yourself, health and green living publication. Think of it as your local resource for the new home-economics, with a focus on holistic wellness and the environment. With each issue, I aim to include voices from our community who practice what they preach, from cooking to green cleaning, gardening, recycling, upcylcing and more. In this issue: consignment sale owner, Lori Jae Hoge, outlines this season's upcoming sales; blogger Liz Zook gives the ladies a "how-to" on choosing swimwear; Beth Warren writes about how to choose quality essential oils with three seasonal recommendations; Amy Hatcher lends advice on how to use kitchen items for a variety of facial recipes, natural sunscreen and more. Kathy DeFeo of the Legendary Grind gives us a DIY on roasting coffee beans. Licensed Massage Therapist, Adam Whitehead digs in deep to teach us about the Summer 2012
lymphatic system, and Scott Mitchell encourages us to filter water this summer instead of contributing to the great plastic wasteland! Also, I would like to mention, special guest contributor, Mark Earlix, who has many acolades but is a notable healer, author and founder of Holistic House Calls LLC. For forty years, he has healed & taught over 25,000 people. Be sure to read his piece on quantum healing. This is a very content rich issue! As a result, we removed the event calendar and recommend that you visit theborolife.com. If you are looking for kidfriendly events, visit murfreesboromacaronikid.com. I hope you enjoy this issue, and share it with others. Make the most of the summer no regrets!

Don' This t Hide S e ason By L iz Ke ! lly Z ook For a woman, I don’t know of any other time of year that is equally dreaded but also anticipated. We look forward to the delights of summer like a cool dip in the pool, but that also means our carefully hidden insecurities from winter will soon be exposed. This year, with helpful swimwear recommendations for different body types, I hope these tips can minimize the dread and maximize the anticipation. You can watch my instructional video to determine your body type. You’ll need a tape measure. Measure yourself with minimal clothing for the most accurate results. Download a QR reader to scan and watch the video, or you can visit my blog at lizkzook.wordpress.com.
If you are a boy shape (also known as rectangle or banana), then you have a very straight shape. Without padding your bathing suit, there are a few things you can do to give yourself some va-va-voom. My favorite two-piece for a boy shape would have a bandeau top with ruching in the center and a simple sidetie bikini bottom. Convertible straps can be added to your top if you desire, but the shape of the bandeau top is going to break up your torso and draw attention to your bust – even if you don’t have much of one. Another way to add some shape is by wearing a bikini with ruffles on the top and bottom. Looking for a onepiece? Choose a one-piece with cut-outs on the sides or lines that create an hourglass shape. Both give the illusion of a more shapely torso. 10
Pear shapes are larger on their bottom half, specifically around their hips and thighs. Whether you’re looking for a one-piece or a two-piece you want to accentuate your bust to minimize your bottom half. There are more than a few easy ways to do this. For the top, choose a swimsuit with bright colors, patterns or ruffles. For the bottom, choose dark, solid colors without patterns or too much detail. The contrast will give a pear shape balance.
For a column shape, which has a larger bust, take the tips for pears and reverse them. Whether looking for a one-piece or twopiece, instead of wearing brighter colors, patterns or ruffles on top, choose a swimsuit wear them on the bottom. What I love about picking swimwear for column shaped ladies is that you can find any sort of swimwear and add to it. Add a fun belt around the hips (or a sarong or a scarf). That tip goes a long way to balance out a bigger bust.

Finding a swimsuit for women with an apple shape can be difficult, but there are actually a lot of swimsuits designed to minimizing a larger mid-section. If you’re looking for a two-piece choose a bottom that has a built in waist minimizer or one that minimizes the appearance of the waist with dark solid colors at the waist. If you’re looking for a one-piece choose a swimsuit that gives the illusion of a hourglass shape with a pattern or design.
220 Barfield Crescent Road Ste. K Murfreesboro - 615.848.1212
If you’re an hourglass shape the only concern is keeping the shape balanced. For a two-piece, be sure to cover as much or as little on top as you do on the bottom. If you wear a patterned top, then balance it with a matching patterned bottom. For a one-piece try to find something that pulls in at your waist and, again, covers as much on top as it does on the bottom. If you cover more on top and less on bottom you’ll end up looking like a pear and vice versa. The goal is to keep the balance. Some general tips: Lovehandles can be minimized by wearing bottoms with a higher waistline. A larger bust can be supported by wearing a top with underwire, sculpted or formed top or a top with a band. The most important tip is to have fun! Summer is really a great time to branch out and try patterns or colors that you wouldn’t normally go for. For more tips and tricks be sure to visit my website at http://lizkzook.wordpress.com

Raid the Kitchen for Your Skin! By Amy Hatcher, Nurse Practitioner It is summer and we all want radiant, healthy skin. With department store shelves lined with products it is impossible to know where to turn. With preservatives, fragrances, alcohol and other additives and chemicals in many products, the obvious choice may be closer than you think. All natural skincare is a great alternative and is generally safer, less expensive and often found right in your kitchen cabinets. Here are some favorite recipes to try at home (many of these products can be found at your local health food or grocery store or online):
Oatmeal cleanser helps restore the natural
moisture balance to the skin and can be used for dry or oily skin, clears clogged pores, provides gentle exfoliation, soothes irritated skin, and improves acne. Ingredients: 1 cup Almond milk or organic milk ½ cup whole rolled oats 1 Tbsp honey Instructions: 1. Blend all ingredients on high until smooth and creamy 2. Pour into a clean jar with a tight fitting lid and store in the refrigerator 3.To use: place a small amount in the palm of your hand, then gently massage into your skin once or twice daily. Rinse well with warm water. 4. Store unused product in a sealable container and refrigerate for 1 week.

Olive and Almond Oil Eye Makeup Remover Ingredients: 4 Tbsp organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3 Tbsp organic Sweet Almond Oil

Honey and Brown Sugar Exfoliate
Apple Cider Vinegar and Aspirin Toner removes dirt and oil, smoothes, softens and heals skin while exfoliating and minimizing the appearance of pores Ingredients: 1/2 ounce organic apple cider vinegar 3 ounces mineral water 5 plain aspirin tablets, uncoated Instructions: 1. Honey and Avocado Mask moisturizes and

Combine ingredients to form a moist paste. 2. Apply generously to a clean, dry face and let set for 30 minutes. Gently wash with warm water. This should be used 2-3 times per week for dry skin and should be mixed fresh for each use.
Lemon and Greek Yogurt minimizes hyper pigmentation from acne scarring and sun damage Ingredients: 2 tablespoons honey 4 teaspoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed or bottled) 3 teaspoons plain or Greek yogurt 1 egg white Instructions: 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until mask thickens. 2. Apply to clean, dry face in the evening and let set for 15 minutes. Gently wash off with warm water. The solution will stay fresh for one week in the refrigerator.
Homemade Sunscreen
Sunscreen is our most important step in skincare. It is essential in protecting the skin from the damaging rays of the sun which can contribute to premature wrinkling and pigmentation problems or sunspots. There are endless recipes for homemade sunscreen online. Many recipes call for oils as the primary ingredient for sun protection, but oils alone may not provide sufficient protection from the sun. Ingredients vary widely, but make sure you choose a recipe with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as these agents have a proven ability to protect from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
In addition to putting organic, healthy products on the skin, it is important to keep the body healthy as well. The skin is considered the outside indicator of inside health. Consuming the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones is an important step in revealing beautiful, youthful skin. Here are some do’s and don’ts for eating for healthy skin:
Do’s
Water is the single most important ingredient in a healthy diet and in healthy skin. Water bathes and hydrates the cells helping them move nutrients in and toxins out encouraging elimination of waste products. Healthy fats promote construction and health of cell membranes, balance hormones and fight inflammation. Increase foods high in essential fatty acids like omega-3s such as flaxseed, almonds, walnuts, avocados and cold water fish such as sardines and salmon. Antioxidants help prevent future damage, reduce inflammation and protect cell membranes. Increase foods high in antioxidants including blueberries and green tea. Vitamin A is essential in healthy skin. Carrots, sweet potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables, paprika and cayenne protect the skin from free radical damage as well as speed up the cell renewal and repair process.
Don’ts
Most people do not realize that excess sugar is one of the main causes of premature aging. The more sugar we eat, the more glucose accumulates in our bloodstream. Glucose in the bloodstream attaches to healthy protein cells causing damage to collagen, cartilage and ligaments and promotes a loss of elasticity. Don’t over consume sodas, white bread and sweets. Smoking is public enemy #1 when it comes to healthy skin. Studies have shown that smoking is strongly associated with premature wrinkling. Several studies have shown that milk (regardless of the fat content) is associated with increased acne. Salt causes tissue to swell. This can make skin appear puffy and unhealthy. Don’t add salt to your foods and minimize canned and processed foods with added salt. Over indulgence of alcohol causes extreme dehydration to the skin, as well as the body. It also causes dilation of the blood vessels which contributes to redness and rosacea.
Ingredients: 1 cup olive or almond oil 1 oz beeswax 2 oz shea butter 2 Tbs 100% aloe vera 3 Tbs zinc oxide 15-30 drops of essential oil, optional Begin by warming the oil on low heat, add the beeswax and shea butter until they melt, add the aloe vera and mix well. After removing from the heat, add the zinc oxide and essential oils until all ingredients are well blended. Store in sealable containers until ready for use. If ingredients separate as they cool, shake the container or set in a warm bowl of water to soften.

What you need to know about
Bottled WATER
By Scott Mitchell Atkins
A few years ago, water became a topic of concern for me. My mom was diagnosed with cancer, and she thought it could be related to bottled water, which she had been regularly consuming. Like her, many have learned about the connection of BPA (Bisphenol A) in plastic containers to cancer. I too became curious, but it was not until I endured a traumatic car wreck and sustained severe whiplash that a change in my water made all the difference. While healing, I discovered many rarely known miraculous properties of water, especially alkaline water. For a couple of years now, I’ve been studying and learning about our blue planet’s most vital resource. This article will shed light on some uncommon facts about bottled water and offer tips for how we can make more conscious decisions that will improve our health, our pocket and ultimately, our planet. Every day, someone you know is consuming and disposing a plastic water bottle. In this country alone, our daily plastic bottle waste could probably fill every room in your home from floor to ceiling several dozens of times. Try YouTubing “Plastic Ocean” and watch what comes up. Ocean currents carry plastic waste from different continents to several regions where this waste accumulates. In the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii, there swirls a gyre (rotating ocean current) greater than twice the size of Texas and as deep as 90 feet. Birds and marine life that come in contact with it are threatened every day. Most bottled water is merely municipal tap water. Waters that claim to be from a natural pristine geological source are still bottled in plastic. Not only are these claims misleading, but even if there were true the integrity of the water is compromised when its container becomes hot and the chemicals in the plastic leach into the liquid. What’s worse is these petroleum-based 16
plastic bottles have an estimated lifespan of 800 to 2,000 years or more and to produce it is quite wasteful. Bringing a one-liter plastic bottle filled with water to market requires 1/4 liter of oil and 3 liters of water. These plastic bottles are transported via freight ships and trucks around the globe in fluctuating seasonal temperatures (sometimes hot!) and shipping containers that range from freezing temperatures to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Many bottles of water are consumed 1-3 years after being bottled, making it highly susceptible for contamination from phthalates, BPA and other harsh chemicals. Besides potentially harmful health effects and the more visible effects of plastic waste, bottled water costs an average of 14,200 times more than tap water over fifteen years. Despite what has been marketed to us, in many ways the end product is less regulated than water delivered from your tap. For those of your who feel uncomfortable with your city’s tap water, there are better options than bottled water. I’ve found
B.Real
that re-usable bottles such as Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Bottles and LifeFactory Glass Bottles are some of the greatest products I’ve ever bought! They offer the convenience of pure hydration on a daily basis. What water should I use to fill my reusable bottles? Filtered tap water, and this is why... There is no denying that we pollute our planet’s water. Think about all the stuff we put down the drain, flush, rinse off, and then think about the commercial entities that do the same things. While the utility industry does its best to reclaim, cleanse and revitalize this water through multiple treatment processes, there are technologies made to use in the home today that can change your water and even make it healthier.
like disease fertilizer. Here are a few tips that will help whatever water you have available, help you. Add minerals like Himalayan salt or Celtic Sea salt, which will cause the ions in the water to become hydrolyzed. When consumed, the hydrolyzed water will actually support deeper cellular hydration. If you order water at a restaurant, try adding a porous fruit or vegetable such as lemons, orange, cucumber or watermelon. Not only will the food absorb chlorine or other trace contaminants, but citrus fruit will help to alkalize your body. Remember, disease can’t live in an alkaline body. To learn more, visit: fb.com/makemywaterhealthy MakeMyWaterHealthy.com scott@makemywaterhealthy.com Scott Mitchell Atkins, 615.947.2313
Filtering is the least expensive option. Try filtering tap water with a carbon and/or a KDF filter. Gravity-flow chlorine filters, such as Brita, are some of the most inexpensive methods to remove chlorine, but they do very little to remove other contaminants. Tap water is federally regulated to be above 7.0 (neutral) pH, because if our tap water were acidic, it would corrode city pipes. Beyond that it’s up to us to satisfy removal of trace contaminants or change the pH for more health benefits. Multi-Pure brand filters are NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certified to remove more contaminants than any other filters sold in the US. They are used in over 30 countries as well. This is what I use and recommend. Besides removing contaminants, filtration cannot transform your water to a more basic (alkaline) pH to deliver optimal health benefits during hydration. This transformed water is known as Ionized Water. To create ionized water, water from the tap flows through a strong electromagnetic field, which causes the water to restructure into alkaline, antioxidant, micro-clustered, mineral-charged, cellhydrating drinking water. Disease can not live in an alkaline body, and our bodies are made of over 70% water. The quality and quantity of the water we drink affects our health more than any other single variable that we can change. Ionized water is the first recommendation by the American Anti-Cancer Institute, and the unit I choose is a licensed Japanese medical device used in over 250 Japanese hospitals. They have been prescribing it for over 35 years. You can also eliminate all of your chemical cleaners with this technology. To learn more about that, visit http://www.ionizedwaterfaq.com/ionizedwater-for-cooking-and-cleaning/. Be weary of reverse osmosis, distilled or deionized water, which is stripped of all minerals and chemicals. This water is “hungry” and will actually seek and leach minerals from your own body. It is often times very acidic and oxidizing, which causes aging. Think of your cells rusting. In fact, it’s

Home Roasting 101
By Kathy DeFeo
In Eighteenth Century European coffee houses, revolutions were brewing. Over authentic fresh cups of coffee Voltaire penned his stories and the Encyclopedia was created by Diderot. If you haven't set the world on fire lately, it's probably because you have never in your lifetime had a real fresh cup of coffee. Coffee peaks 24-72 hours after roasting, and has a shelf life of seven to ten days. After that, the beans are mere shadows of their former selves. Americans roasted coffee in their homes throughout the Nineteenth Century until commercial roasteries came into play. With the Industrial Revolution, the art of roasting in the Twentieth Century seemed to fall to the wayside. Now in the TwentyFirst Century, home roasting is on the rise. The following method is an inexpensive, fast easy way to produce an excellent, even roast. Don't worry, you don't have to put your hair in a Victorian bun, look stern or wear a corset to be part of a growing number of people who are venturing into traditional home roasting. Home Roasting 101 Tools and Materials, see picture above hot-air popcorn popper (the best have vents on the sides, but any will do) metal colander or basket large wooden spoon timer oven mits measuring cup green coffee beans 1) Gather your materials and set-up outside on the porch or patio. Roasting creates a strong odor, lots of smoke, and plenty of chaff (the skin of the bean) that flies everywhere! Add 1/2 cup of green beans to the hot-air popcorn popper and turn it on. If the beans are spinning quickly, add more a little at a time 18
until they are spinning very slowly, that will be the bean capacity for your machine. Turn on your timer, you will need to watch it. Before you put the lid on, stir with a wooden spoon, until they start rotating a little faster. The beans will still be green but beginning to turn tan. 2) Keep your eyes and ears open, never walk away from a roast! You will start to see chaff float out of the popper. The beans will start moving faster as the water in them evaporates. About 4 minutes in you will start to hear cracking (like from a fire), this is called the "first crack." For a light or city roast, you can stop now. 3) 5-6 minutes into the roast, after a pause, listen for the "second crack" to start. It's quieter than the first. At the beginning of the second crack, the beans are medium roast. Roasting for a few minutes beyond the second crack will give you a dark roast (about 6 1/2-8 minutes), any more than that will just give you burned beans. 4) When the beans have reached the desired color, stop the popper, throw on your mits (be careful, the machine and beans are VERY hot!). Pour the beans into the colander. They need to be aerated quickly to stop the roast, swirl the beans around to release the heat, let them come to room temperature. 5) Transfer the roasted beans into a glass container. Leave the lid slightly ajar to let gasses (CO2) escape overnight. 6) Grind beans accordingly for your favorite brewing method. A French Press is recommended for best results. Happy Roasting! Essential Oils: Buyer Info & Tips
By Beth Warren
Essential oils have enhanced my green cleaning routine by bringing the scents that I originally missed when I transitioned from chemical to all-natural cleaners. Essential oils also play an integral role in my healthcare regimen. For example, I often use essential oils to alleviate the pain of a headache or relieve pressure from congestion. Entering the world of essential oils might seem overwhelming. Upon entering a store that sells essential oils, one might find hundreds of varieties available, and multiple choices for the same oil. Fear not, friend. In this article, I will explain the basics for choosing essential oils and provide simple suggestions for you to disinfect (tea tree oil), invigorate the senses (eucalyptus) and protect you and your loved ones from bugs (citronella). When choosing essential oils to bring aromatherapy into your home trust your nose. No matter the healing or medicinal claims of certain essential oils, when using them purely for aromatics you want to be sure that you find the smell pleasant. Some scents offer calming factors, while others energize. You’ll notice the differences. Not all essential oils are created equally and the more pure and organic, the better. It is important to note the difference between essential oils and synthetic fragrance. Essential oils are distilled from various parts of plants from around the world. They are concentrated oils derived from stems, leaves, flowers, etc. Synthetic fragrances use a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients to mimic scents, but they are imposters and offer little to no healing properties. Consumers should opt for 100% pure to organic essential oil. How do you know if you are getting 100% pure to organic essential oil? Examine the label, note any additional additives, and ask your retailer. Words like “fragrance oil,” “nature identical oil,” or “perfume oil” typically indicate an adulterated oil product. Suppliers that note their product as being “therapeutic grade” or “aromatherapy grade” are also misleading. There are no government regulations for essential oils, so be careful to avoid any distributor that makes those claims. Because essential oils can easily lose their integrity when exposed to light, you will find quality essential oils in dark brown or dark blue bottles. Clear plastic or glass packaging should be avoided. If your essential oils are not organic, the product may not provide optimal results. Another thing to keep in mind is that essential oils vary in price. If you find a vendor who sells a variety of oils (jasmine, orange, frankincense, tea-tree oil, etc.) for the same price, there is usually a catch. When put to use, you should almost always dilute essential oils with water or another carrier liquid or carrier oil. Using them fullstrength or alone can have negative side effects, including sensitization and anaphylactic shock. Any reputable seller of essential oils should be able to answer questions you have about particular essential oils. It is always best to seek advice and do your own research before buying and using essential oils. This goes for any essential oil that you intend to use on or in the body, and especially, in the case of pregnant women, as they are not always considered safe. I have three go-to essential oils in my home: tea tree oil, eucalyptus, and citronella. I use many others, but these three are mainstays. I use tea tree oil in my cleaning products, including my soap nuts dishwasher detergent. I also add it to my hand soap and body soap mixture. It is widely used for its antiseptic and antifungal properties. I feel better knowing that only a few drops in my cleaning mixtures will help kill germs in my home. Tea tree oil is also used in certain shampoos to treat dry scalp and dandruff. I often pair tea-tree oil with another essential oil. Some people find the scent of tea tree oil a too medicinal. Pairing it with a few drops of lavender makes for a lovely combination. Eucalyptus, provides a refreshing smell that’s like a trip to the spa. Anyone else out there 20

have sinus issues? I often feel as though my eyes will burst out of my head due to sinus pressure. I have a mixture of water and eucalyptus oil that I spray on the floor of my shower. As my shower heats and the steam rises, the vapors soothe my head and nasal passages. I also combine a few drops with coconut oil to make my own salve that does not contain the same harmful chemicals as the ones found over the counter.
Citronella is especially important to me during bug season. I’m not sure which I loathe more: bugs or bug sprays. Bug sprays contain so many chemicals that I try to avoid. I am certain most of you have heard of, or even used, citronella candles. Using the citronella essential oil works on the same principle: bugs do not like it. I mix several drops of citronella oil (a 10-to-1 ratio is generally effective) with witch hazel (rubbing alcohol works too). If witch hazel or rubbing alcohol is not pleasing, use extra virgin olive oil, almond or grapeseed oil as the carrier (these oils will also be therapeutic for your skin). Remember to shake well before each use, as the oil can separate from the carrier. Neem oil can also be added to the mixture for a little boost. As with anything, I urge you to do your own research before trying these and any essential oils. Research by oil type as well as doing research on the company that manufactures and/or distributes the oils. Many websites offer a directory detailing the different uses for each oil, including aromatherapy benefits and recipes. Keep an open mind and be safe!

Massage for Health By Adam Whitehead
Most people enjoy a pampering massage to reduce stress, decrease muscle tension and relax the mind. Taking care of your greatest asset (your body) is a major focus for many. We exercise, eat right, meditate, and do our best to keep our bodies clean and healthy. Massage therapy can help cleanse your body, improve immunity, greatly reduce any excess fluid and provide gentle relaxation. Allow me to offer some insight about our bodies before I tell you about this fantastic therapy. The lymphatic system in our body is designed to return excess fluid from tissues and defend against infection. It has vessels (like veins) to transport the fluid it collects throughout the body. Lymph vessels connect to lymph nodes which filter and clean the fluid as well as produce cells to kill off disease causing bacteria in the body. The fluid collected is essentially the left-overs. This waste from our tissue is being nourished and all the particles or cells that don’t belong. I like to think of the lymphatic system as the “garbage system” of the body, it takes all the stuff I don’t want and gets it out for me! So how can massage affect the lymphatic system? Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a hands-on approach to effectively increasing the amount of fluid being processed by the lymph system. Unlike the cardiovascular system which has a powerful pump (the heart) to move blood throughout our bodies, the lymphatic system relies upon muscle movements and deep diaphragmic breathing to push the lymph fluid through. MLD utilizes a shallow gentle movement to push fluid through the system in which most of the vessels are just beneath the skin. As the amount of lymph fluid being processed by the system increases so does the health and cleanliness of the tissues. It is the best cleanse on the market! MLD is a must have and has become famous for its effects on clients who have built up body fluid called Edema. Edema is a symptom that can be 22
caused by many factors and is basically a swelling of the body tissues. Most frequently this is seen as a result of Lymphedema, a compromise or constraint to the lymph system. Edema is commonly visible in the legs (usually around the ankles) and also seen in the arms. It has been estimated that 40% of patients that underwent surgery for breast cancer develop some degree of upper extremity lymphedema. Lymphedema is only one case in which MLD is a successful treatment. Due to the swelling around injury sites MLD can greatly decrease the pain and healing times when recovering from any injury. Sinus congestion can be drained by using the techniques of MLD. Auto-Immune Diseases and Compromised Immune Systems benefit not only from the relaxation that the body experiences but the heightened activity of the lymph nodes to better protect and cleanse all of the systems of the body. Cancer patients will also experience great results with improving health and body function. MLD is one of the most underrated therapies of our time. That’s right, this is one of the most amazing and beneficial hands-on techniques to promoting healthy living. It detoxifies the body, increases fluid movement, aides in injury recovery, decreases pain symptoms and relieves the body of stress! For those seeking general detox, I recommend one 90-minute full body session. When recovering from an injury like a sprained ankle, I would recommend a 30-minute session every other day. For lymphedema or other auto-immune diseases it requires a case-by-case analysis to see what would be the most beneficial. MLD can be beneficial and healing to everyone, for some it can even save them from a life of pain and discomfort. My name is Adam Whitehead, LMT owner of Square 1 Therapy, and I would really like to hear from you. Call (678) 467-3259 or email me at Adam@Square1Therapy.com to schedule an appointment or to get more information about how massage can benefit you.

How Quantum Healing and Intuition Create
By Mark Earlix One of the techniques I work with, involves the term “morphic field.” Quantum science refers to it as a “field of information.” This information emulates and emanates forth from within us, which carries our life’s history and makes up our personal constitution at any given moment. The information expresses in vision or hearing of which both come from our knowing. We know something because we have experienced it at one time or other, consciously or subconsciously. We can even place our hands two to six inches away from another’s body (palms facing the other person) and through the sensory of the surface of our palms; we can sense the heat or coldness, electrical sensation or even pressure that is emanating. This exercise might take practice, but always, it will take trust to develop this tool, as all people have the ability to do so. As with most endeavors in life, we initially become more conscious and knowing how to tweak ourselves into becoming more efficient.

The more we practice, the more we are learning to trust. As we feel the anomaly of actual sensation, there will follow a momentary vision or other momentary sense that incorporates pictures in the mind. The pictures and feelings that come to us are our way of identifying with our own life or another’s life. But, the most wonderful part of it all is; we wouldn’t even be able to identify with another unless it was/is about us as well. Ideally, we have the opportunity to contemplate what we see, judge, fear, expect and feel from others… and ponder; what here is similar to me and my life’s experience? How do I relate to this experience that has or is happening to me or this other person? What we perceive from another’s morphic field has been manifest in front of us by grace that enables us to work out this foreign obstruction and insecurity or fear. It is a golden opportunity to just recognize it. Through the recognition, it no longer has a place to hide within us and the need to work something out has diminished greatly.

These pictures can also occur in an abstract manner, as though we are watching a movie or even through our senses. The more often we practice and trust that we really did purposefully perceive these pictures, the events will increase in quality, quantity and duration. Once we initially perceive the information of this picture playing out in our creative mind, and purposefully allow the scene or icon (living picture) to stay in our thinking for a few moments with intentional focus, then the contemplation of it becomes easier. Ask what the scene really means to you, your friend or client. Don’t be so quick to make loud the voiced opinion, prophecy or soul reading etc. What we see, is always only a small piece of what is waiting to be rediscovered of a person’s life in determining what is reflected in them of who they are, what they are and why they are today.
Pain is then transformed to wisdom and the physical or chronic discomfort is transformed to life force freely moving through them and us.

Summer style Guide At Tangerine Salon and Spa, providing a unique experience is all about staying ahead of the curve. Tangerine is an Aveda Lifestyle Salon, which means that ahead of the curve includes style, fashion trends and a commitment to natural quality ingredients. Aveda is transparent about its ingredients. Acacia, ylang ylang, flax seed and brazil nut are just a few of the natural ingredients that make up the hair and cosmetic products in the company’s line. Tangerine brings that commitment to Murfreesboro in both their salon and spa services. Jessica Kelley, a Senior Hair Stylist at Tangerine, explains that Aveda color is 96% all natural and very healthy for all types of hair. Its natural ingredients make it especially great for those with sensitive skin or scalp. When it comes to hair, nails, and cosmetics, stylists at this Aveda Lifestyle Salon are constantly watching for the latest trends as well as attending classes weekly to bring cutting edge techniques and trends back to their guests. This season, stylists at Tangerine say it’s all about color - from bright hues on lips and toes to adding subtle dimensions to hair color. Kelley says the “retro 70’s feel” we’re seeing on runways and in Hollywood is definitely inspiring not only fashion but the salon world as well. “Color blocking and high waisted bell bottoms are really big this season. Everything is longer from hemlines to hair. Soft bangs are really in as well.” Kelley, who just returned from attending Aveda’s 2012 Color Trends for Spring and Summer event, explains that the 70’s theme even carries over into hair styles including not only the bangs, but braids and sock buns too. For hair color, Kelley says to look for all over color with subtle dimensions like deep blondes, reds, and brunettes, but start to steer away from the highlights seen in past seasons. To get the soft looks Kelley mentions like long bangs or a messy braid, she suggests two of her favorite volumizing products Aveda’s phomollient styling foam and Aveda’s volumizing tonic. Both create body and shine but don’t leave your hair feeling sticky. Kelley also says a popular product used at Tangerine is Aveda’s

In addition to hair color and styles, you can see the retro 70’s feel in the new summer make-up collection, called Sea Blossoms, which features corals and soft peaches as well as dark blues. The hues, inspired by the colors you might find along a coral reef, seek to emphasize natural, luminous skin. Kelley says a Tangerine staff favorite is nourish-mint smoothing lip color in Star Coral, a warm, orange red that compliments the season’s colors well. Sarah Allen, a licensed Aesthetician and Nail Specialist at Tangerine, says color for nails is also very bright and concentrated this year. OPI’s new Holland Collection features hues that are both bright and bold. In addition to summery corals and pinks, Allen says colors with gray undertones including blue-grays and green-grays remain popular. A Tangerine guest favorite from the Holland Collection is “Kiss Me On My Tulips,” a bright, sunny pink. Tangerine’s owner, Jim McCarrall, says arming his staff with ongoing education helps them provide the best experience possible for their guests. “We have classes going on three weeks out of every month. This way we can continue to evolve and grow by staying on top of the latest trends.” McCarrall also points out that customization is something that’s vital to the Tangerine experience. In addition to providing “extras” like a complimentary five minute stress relieving scalp massage, and Aveda Comforting Tea, stylists are trained to take each guest on an individual “sensory journey” designed to identify and address specific stressors through aromatherapy and holistic hands-on approaches. Tangerine Salon and Spa is a full service salon and features four spa treatment rooms and a pedicure area. Tangerine offers cut, color, and special occasion hair services as well as facials, massage, waxing and nail services. The salon is located at 845 North Thompson Lane in Murfreesboro. Just Be By Beth Hardiman

“My house could never be that clean!" “I wish I had her figure.” "She’s such a good mom – she never yells at her kids.” These are the kinds of things I say to myself while observing other women in my life. The comparisons I make seem harmless until I realize they are resonating within me, and I start to doubt myself. Admiration is one thing, but envy is another. All of us have those friends that make us feel inadequate. We wonder how they keep it together – how they look so polished. The truth of the matter is it is an illusion and impossible to be the woman we have designed ourselves to be in our mind. We don’t have the time to be perfect in our careers, marriages, friendships, and keep up with this fast-paced world of parenthood. For years, I compared myself to my mother – I had a brilliant childhood and wanted my children to have the same experience I did. But to this day, I’m not the housekeeper she is, can’t fold a fitted sheet and don’t wrap presents like the customer service department at Macy’s. And…I’m at peace with that – finally. It took me years however, to realize that I’m not my mother. My set of circumstances is completely different including the spacing of my children, and the fact that I am a working mother. I am not raising my children in the 1980’s when it was safe for children to go outside and play unattended for hours at a time. In the 1980’s, there wasn't Facebook or Twitter, no travel ball and many women worked within the home. I felt like a failure because my house was messy, and I failed to spend more quality time with my children. I had so many balls in the air that I was desperately trying to keep afloat. All the balls eventually came crashing around me, and I was forced to take a look at my life. I found that I was stressed trying to maintain the life I thought I should and be the person I imagined I should be. That person was tired, cranky and wasn’t great at anything because she was trying to be good at everything. Once I shed the stereotype I created for myself and learned how to say "no" without guilt, I liked myself a lot more. I still yell at my kids from time to time, and I’m learning each day how my words impact them and try to speak a little sweeter. I still make excuses not to workout, and you will NEVER find my office or kitchen without chocolate. But – I refuse to deprive myself of things that I love regardless of the media telling me to question myself if I'm not a size 4. That's ridiculous! My house is still a mess, and it will be because I married a messy man, have two young kids and a 70 pound dog that rules my heart and my couch. I believe the reality is that the woman who has it so together is jealous of the woman that doesn’t feel the pressure to be perfect or live up to unrealistic expectations. I now strive to be that woman who is free to just be real.

Real Fit: Summer Sweat
By Mitch Warren, Tri-Fit CPT Summer is here, but it’s never too late to start burning off that winter weight and be confident in this season’s wardrobe, especially your swimsuit. This regimen will burn fat that and result in all over definition.
5 burpees 10 pushups 15 squats 5 burpees x 5 rounds Perform this circuit at a constant, steady pace. Ideally you’ll be forced to push yourself to finish the last round. Though, simple and short in duration, this circuit can give you dramatic results if done with effort. Focus on the challenge. While the weather is still enjoyable, take advantage of some outdoor exercise as well. Take a simple walk around the neighborhood or participate in a pickup game. Just get moving! If you’re just looking to take your workout outside, give this regimen a shot. In 20 minutes, spring, jog or walk 200 yards and then do 10 sit ups. Alternate these as many as you can until you’ve reached time. A simple challenge that can be done on your own or as a group! Exercise doesn’t have to be boring; it just has to be creative, safe, and logical. Eat healthy, get enough hydration and alternate between these two workouts as frequently as possible and you will see results in just a few weeks.
