Horizon Perfoming Arts Center The Horizon Performing Arts Center is a theatre and performing arts school dedicated to serving the needs of the community of Benton Harbor, MI. This home consist of vibrant colors, dynamic shapes and spaces that are created by steel construction, with curtain walls, and brick masonry. When visitors see the building the colors intrigue the person to know a little bit more about this performing art center. The center is for the community to enjoy where they feel free to open their heart and let out all they had to give. This allows them to have a form of expression through the arts.
Artistic Expression The human experience is very important to create an environment where people feel free to express themselves through artistic expression. The idea of free to be alive as a form of expression, a way to release the frustration inside in a positive way. To create this type of environment where not only the students of high school age and younger can come but those of all ages can come and experience the freedom of self-expression. It was stated by Samuel Mockbee that, architecture most directly impacts the human condition.” As architects and designers we can change the world through the buildings that we design. This building was designed for the Benton Harbor community of the arts.
Ornament Decorative ornament on the performing art hall is to promote expression of materials and to promote more expressive detail through the interaction of expressive design. Ornament is to enhance the human experience. The exterior of the building to enhance the feeling of movement through the curtain wall diagonal mullions. “The pleasure to be found in objects of great beauty and ornament is produced either by invention and the working of the intellect, or by hand of the craftsman…” Alberti

Design Concepts Movement
We as humans are not static giving us the need to change place, postion or posture. Without movement it is as if you are not alive.
Spatial Dancing Spaces Creating spaces within the building that have a sense of movement inside and out. Through the curving of walls so the surroundings can create a show of dance within itself.
Parapet Detail Dancing in the Streets There are many places in the world where people dance in the streets because they feel free to express themselves in public. This is a public outdoor room that is uses as a public square where visitors can perform in a band and other dances. Change this from being an embarrassing performance to a way to bring life back into the community.
Creativity
Curtain Wall Detail
It is our ability to make new things or think of new ideas. This idea of creativity is important to keep because without it things will stay the same. Evolving Street Life Opening the street activity to merge together with the local buildings. Allowing the life on the street to restaurants and retail flow as one. Using the street to promote and encourage social encounters with local town people with the visiting guest.
Live Mic Using the street life of the restaurants and retail to promote talent night where the community can sign up to come and display their talent through the arts. This is open to many different kinds of talents that will be hosted in restaurants on the strip.

The Bayview Tiny House Goal This Tiny House design and build class is and effort to educate and explore alternatives to the average size of an American home and its related issues. Design and build a fully functional, and quaint home on a utility trailer that is 8’wide x 18’ long. As project financial director in the team of 4, I was in charge of the budget and with help of building. Our team had a budget of $13,200 to research, design, build, and utilize the materials needed to make a completely functional living area. This project is scheduled to be completed by May 2, 2015.
Design & Build We were able to learn and incredible amount of technical information and design skills, but the process provided a real opportunity for the application of that knowledge and education.

Honduras Visit This trip was of great value because it allowed us to see first hand what the community needs were on the large scale. In addition, this project was unique because of the culture, site, and clients needs. Visiting and traveling different areas in order to understand the culture and common architectural language was vital to our final design. The various of images on this page are of places that were visited on the trip. These images reflect the architecture as well as the culture of the area. This trip opened our eyes to see the beautiful architecture that surrounds us in areas of Central America.

Project intent was to use the existing building to create a vistor center. In the vistor center where many will visit it was act as a learning tool to teach about water collection. The purpose of the water collection is to provide grey water for the needs of the bulding. Research was done to provide calculation of how much water would be collected in a place where it rains only four months out of the year.
