2024 BIFA Program Book

Page 1

BIFA is a 10-day celebration of Adventure + Creativity + Nature + Play. Local, national and international artists merge to deliver traditional and unconventional experiences across music, dance, film, visual arts and family entertainment. The festival transforms the Town of Breckenridge into a vibrant hub of cultural exploration, with events spanning venues, public parks, trails and open spaces. This year’s focus on the complex relationship between humans and earth comes to life through a county weed pull turned outdoor art installation, interactive theater inspired by the mysterious life of bees, a physicist-narrated string quartet confronting a planet under siege and so much more. Explore ticketed performances, immersive art installations, art classes and free, family-friendly activities at breckcreate.org/bifa.

Outdoor events are subject to weather delays or cancellations, and all end times are approximate. Event locations are detailed on page 52.

“When Jason Moran performs with his trio, Bandwagon, these days, he engages in a ritual that befits one of the most independent minds now working in jazz.”

-The New York Times

Experience the timeless genius of Ellington’s music, brilliantly reimagined by Moran. Guided by Duke Ellington’s great canon, Moran takes a solo piano climb up “Mount Ellington” in this extraordinary celebration of the composer’s enduring legacy 125 years after his birth and finishes the evening with his trio, The Bandwagon.

Pianist and composer Jason Moran has established himself as a risk-taker and trendsetter for new directions in jazz. It’s that incomparable talent and unyielding drive towards innovation that earned Moran a prestigious MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship and the title of Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz. Since 2000, Moran and his trio The Bandwagon (Tarus Mateen and Nasheet Waits) have dazzled audiences at elite venues worldwide. Moran has also performed with many acclaimed artists such as Charles Lloyd and Dave Holland. He composed a ballet for Alzonzo King LINES Ballet, conceived a jazz and skateboarding collaboration and wrote the films score for Selma.

MOONSTONE + IOWA HILL TRAILS

Megan Geckler’s trail installations use flagging tape, a mass-produced material used in the male-dominated fields of construction, mining and forestry. Wrapped tree trunks on Moonstone Trail create a Seussical, color-wheel effect as one gazes up or down the steep switchbacks. On Iowa Hill, Geckler worked with volunteers to weed invasive species, such as False Chamomile, replacing each weeded plant with a small lawn flag. The masses of flags create a color deposit that blankets the hillsides, hugging the surface of the earth.

TO THE NEXT GENERATION

AUG 16–SEP 8 • ALL DAY • ILLINOIS CREEK TRAIL

In To the Next Generation, Clarke is influenced in part by roadside monuments placed by various historical societies and related civic and governmental organizations. Many of these monuments romanticize American historical events and erase the history and presence of Indigenous people, cultures and placenames. In contrast, Clarke’s series incorporates local histories to turn the reductive trope of the “last Indian” on its head. Whereas historical monuments are focused on the commemoration of the past, To the Next Generation features text that both reimagines Breckenridge’s past but also projects events tied to the land that take place in the future.

In addition to the trail installation, view Clarke’s monuments in the Riverwalk Center Lawn and Blue River Plaza throughout the Festival.

MINER KEY

BY BILL ORISICH

AUG 16–25 • 1–4PM DAILY REILING DREDGE VIA B&B TRAILHEAD / PARKING LOT

This trail is ADA accessible

The Reiling Dredge operated from 1909 until it sank in 1922. Miner Key is a site-specific sonic experience inspired by the history, sound, shape, texture, rhythm and beauty of the Reiling Dredge. It recalls a time when this place was teeming with mining enterprises, oblivious and in stark contrast to the pristine natural environment and envisions the past in the context of the present.

Henriette wants to be the first lady in 1830s Europe to climb Mont Blanc. Erin wants to be the first trans woman to ascend the Seven Summits. And MT wants to get through a bouldering class without embarrassing herself. This story celebrates Colorado’s outdoor culture with three true stories of women pushing their limits and meeting their edge. The performances will be staged readings with performers taking on multiple roles, engaging with the audience through moments of direct address storytelling and celebrating community through honest and intimate staging.

Together Stone and Cozzola have over 25 years of experience, including Off-Broadway and The Second City. This marks their fourth collaboration together since 2016.

Local Artist-in-Residence Kia Neill contributes visuals to the theater and lobby for A Lady’s Guide to Mountains Neill is a mixed media artist. Her work is inspired by living in the Rocky Mountain landscape, the different ways people culturally use or “mine” the mountains, how the land constantly reclaims itself and her own sense of spirituality in relation to nature when pushing her athleticism and endurance in the high alpine elements. Through color and abstraction, Neill’s work simultaneously portrays the soul of the mountains themselves and conveys the internal emotional, mental and spiritual landscape of the hiker.

At the dawn of the 21st century, humanity has arrived at an extraordinary Crossroads—a time and place where scientific ability to identify unprecedented risk intersects a societal inability to respond. The Crossroads Project fuses original music with art, imagery and science to create live performance experiences that address global sustainability and provide a path toward meaningful response. Featuring physicist Dr. Robert Davies and the Fry Street Quartet, Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project confronts a planet under siege and a future in peril—inspiring audiences to change the course.

Tunnel Vision is a solo exhibition of work by Megan Geckler. The centerpiece is a stunning, large-scale installation created from flagging tape in a vibrant array of colors. The extruded PVC film suspends from the gallery ceiling to the floor, forming a mesmerizing, floating mass of gradients that shift between a spectrum of hues.

In the gallery storefront are several pieces from Geckler’s Woven Panels series, where she meticulously layers flagging tape into intricate, geometric patterns. Geckler also transforms ordinary gallery pedestals by wrapping and weaving them in the material, turning them into beautifully crafted, impermanent works of art.

MAY 24–SEP 1

The Door is Open is a retrospective exhibition of Gerald Clarke’s work featuring sculpture, painting, video and other media from the 1990s to today. A self-described “30-year emerging artist” and citizen of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, Clarke reckons with personal, national and Cahuilla tribal histories through his practice. He uses humor to uplift Indigenous narratives, interrogate the impacts of colonialism and disarm viewers into absorbing his art.

SATURDAY, AUG 24 • 6PM

BLUE RIVER PLAZA • FREE

Hear firsthand about the inspirations and processes behind Gerald Clarke’s outdoor art installation, To the Next Generation, in this artist talk. Clarke will describe his approach to incorporating Summit County and Ute history and answer questions from the audience.

Immediately following his talk, Gerald will create new works for his series, Branded, in which he scorches pieces of paper and other objects using branding irons he forged himself. Branding irons that read “Native” and “Indian” satirize nonnative people’s and the art world’s obsession with Indigenous authenticity. Heated up and burned onto a surface, they highlight how that obsession essentializes and stereotypes the infinitely varied lived experiences and artwork of Indigenous people.

Immerse yourself in the exhibitions by Megan Geckler and Gerald Clarke at Old Masonic Hall with Creative Encounters—bridging art, conversation and music within our contemporary gallery space.

Breck Create aims to build a dynamic, year-round creative community in Breckenridge.

The organization’s mission is to deliver inspiring creative experiences that enrich the quality of life for all residents and quality of place for visitors. Breck Create supports and serves artists, creatives, cultural enthusiasts, visitors and the community at large by providing performances, exhibitions, screenings, art classes and other engagement opportunities.

The organization maintains, manages and operates the Town of Breckenridge’s exceptional cultural facilities and hosts arts-based events in public gathering spaces throughout Breckenridge. Breck Create’s core attractions are the Riverwalk Center—a 750-seat, heated, indoor performance venue—and a lively Arts District campus of renovated historic structures that now function as studio spaces for art classes and workshops. These structures also include affordable rentals for local artists and visiting artists-inresidence participants. The Breckenridge Arts District is a certified district within the Colorado Creative Industries Creative District program.
