Director’s Notes With the dangerous nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, we knew that we would not be able to present a live theatre production in the Cargill Theater this semester. With the recognition of the many difficult and necessary conversations happening in our country and in our communities right now surrounding systemic racism, sexism, implicit bias, and our human responsibility and duty to celebrate and elevate the worth and dignity of every human being, we knew that we needed to tell an important story that matters. Our production of Qui Nguyen’s “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” attempts to serve both purposes. This script is a pandemic-era adaptation by the author of his celebrated play “She Kills Monsters,” one of the most-produced plays in American theatre in the last several years. This adaptation is intended to be performed via video conferencing software and streamed to its audience. This play is also a story that depicts the hurt and harm human beings — in this case, young people — can cause, but also the hopeful healing that can happen within our hearts and in our community when we challenge stereotypes and prejudices, cast aside name-calling and bullying, and open our minds and hearts to embracing each other for who we are as we fulfill our duty to help one another through life’s great adventure for as long as it lasts for us. A WARNING: out of our sincere care for our audience, and especially in light our acute awareness of the harm that various forms of bigotry can cause and have caused in our community: this play focuses on themes of death of a loved one, gender identity and sexual orientation, the harm caused by projecting stereotypes and biases, and it depicts a few scenes of bullying with horrible verbal and emotional abuse portrayed. You will see these characters at times insult, diminish, and hurt each other in ways so many people tragically do in the real world, but you will also hear voices amplified that are all too often ignored, you will see stereotypes challenged, harm rejected, hope fueled, and you will see the power of healing and transformation each of us has the capacity to call on within ourselves to be good to each other.
