UPROOTED
The colonisation of Australian native plants through species indigenous to urban Melbourne “Colonial settlers ignored the Aboriginal method, and that contemporary Australians still suffer from the result. The Aboriginal methods of land management were not just practical, but aesthetically pleasing.” ― Bruce Pascoe, Dark Emu

THE LIVING PAVILION MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY, 2019 A 17 day event, The Living Pavilion was a celebration of indigenous knowledge, ecology, sustainability and art. The installation featured 40,00 Kulin Nation Plants, selected by Zena and Charles Soloman and Ecodynamics for their importance to aboriginal peoples. Indigenous plant use and knowledge were celebrated in this space, an excellent example of how education, arts programs and native planting design can be integrated. https://students.unimelb.edu.au/student-precinct/project-updates/the-living-pavilion2 , https://landscapeaustralia.com/articles/plants-tell-stories-of-cultural-connection/# , https://greenmagazine.com.au/the-living-pavilion-indigenous-knowledgesustainability/

A NATIVE ROCKERY GARDEN FIONA HALL HEIDE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, 2009 A commissioned artist’s garden by Australian contemporary artist Fiona Hall, this native rockery explores the relationships between nature and culture. An artistic eye was clearly at work here, as form, colour and negative space are expertly integrated. Although certainly less colourful in winter the composition and textures ensure that the planting remains engaging. Also worth noting is Hall’s creative treatment of the Eucalyptus caesia through espalier techniques. https://www.heide.com.au/sites/default/files/Sustainable-Art-Trail_opt.pdf , http:// sonhank.com/education/heide-sustainability-art-trail/indigenous-stories/fiona-hall-anative-rockery-garden/
