March saw the official opening of Robert Ellis’ flagship Beeston branch on the corner of High Road and Station Road. Invited clients, friends and guests all enjoyed the launch event, which was officially opened by Beeston resident and BBC Radio Nottingham’s Notts County commentator, Colin Slater. Breeze finds out about the expansion...
An expanding estate agency is always a great sign for the local property market especially when that estate agency already has a dominant position. So when Robert Ellis announced its move to high profile offices at 12 High Road, tripling its ground floor space and increasing its window space by four times, this was surely a sign that things were looking up for everyone. The firm has had an office in Beeston for the last 26 years. Director, Paul Merritt, says: “We’ve been in Beeston since 1989 – we originally opened at 92 High Road and moved to larger offices at 38 High Road in 1994. Since then we’ve continued to grow, opening branches throughout West Nottinghamshire and expanding our Beeston practice. We had 11 members of staff in that sales office so we needed to increase our office space.” The new branch at 12 High Road, Beeston straggles High Road and Station Road. Many will recall it as the former Orange phone shop and before that, a gentleman’s outfitters; Barry Austin and prior to that Victor Odes. It is certainly high profile. A point that Paul says not only benefits clients but which underpins the firms ethos. “With the advent of internet estate agents we want to underpin our view of the importance of having a high street office. “It is important that clients can come into the branch and talk through the sale or purchase of what is their biggest financial commitment and largest single asset with someone they can trust and get to know face to face.”

While this branch is the sales office, the firm plays equal attention to its lettings clients. “Our three storey letting office, which was refurbished three years ago, stands at 130 High Road in Beeston and we also have a third branch on commercial Avenue controlling our admin and mortgage services. “We are the largest independent estate agency in West Nottinghamshire, selling and letting the most properties in the area and all backed by the accreditation of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. We feel our offices should reflect this and firmly believe that ‘better never stops’ continuing our good service and improving upon it is what we are all about.” Robert Ellis, 12 High Road, Beeston. breeze memory lane Thank you to our reader who sent this months image in of pupils of the Rylands Mission. Do you recognise anyone? The picture was taken in during Sunday School sometime in the 50’s.
Pictured above theview looking east from Beeston lock towards Nottingham. The building on the left of the picture is a morgue used for the storage of bodies, victims of drowning in the canal or river and was known locally as the 'Dead House'. Just through the gate the canal bank dips down to almost water level, this was a rescue point for people and horses which had inadvertently fallen into the canal. In the distance the highest building in the block was the Jolly Anglers Inn, the venue for inquests that were held for drowning victims, the building in front of the 'Jolly' was the Inn's stable block for the canal's horses. The 'Jolly' was closed in 1937 when the landlord then opened the new 'Jolly Anglers' on Meadow Road. Just past the pub was the Rylands Mission Hall built 1895 by the daughter of the lock keeper of that time Miss Barker. The other roof tops on the sky line are those of the cottages on Back Lane; sadly the public house, Mission Hall and Back Lane were to disappear in the late 1950's to be replaced with the Longlands Road development. It is unsure when the Morgue disappeared, possibly in the 1940's, incidentally nothing replaced it in that position. Above image courtesy of http://www.picturethepast.org.uk Credit Mr W Spencer

Established since 1994, there is a baby room to cater for babies and crawlers up to the age of eighteen months, an area for walkers, another area that accommodates toddlers and an area for the pre-school children. Children are grouped according to age and developmental stage. There is an outdoor play area, and when weather permits the facility makes use of nearby parks. The nursery is open from 8:00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. There are also support systems in place for children with additional needs. Children attend for a variety of sessions each week. The staff understand that the framework is not about pushing children yet ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to learn through high quality play to the best of their ability. They strongly believe that children are active learners from birth and that if provided with the right environment, support and experiences; it will then in turn encourage their curiosity, imagination and creativity. The care team ensure that they work together with carers and parents to ensure that they stimulate each child emotionally and intellectually by providing unique circumstances that promote individual active learning. The environment is organized into clearly defined areas to accommodate different activities appropriate to the development and competence of the children. Areas are divided, and where possible, by the use of lowlevel shelving that reduces distraction and allows children to become engrossed in their activities. Mealtimes should be social, happy times where skills can be developed and foods tasted! All of their meals are carefully planned and created using only the freshest ingredients to meet the individual needs and requirements of each child. Deciding on after-school study? With the new school year starting, many parents start to look for things which will help their child with their maths and English studies at school. There are many alternatives available, including after-school classes and tutors. Here are a few tips which will help you get the right help for your child. Firstly anything you do must be personalised, taking into account the learning needs and style of the individual child. Any study or revision programme must be put together with your child in mind. Secondly, the study programme must be systematic. Maths and English are both skill-based subjects and skills can only be mastered through practice. This practice must be part of a structured programme so that your child can recognise his or her own achievement. Thirdly, the work must be relevant. Any course of study must be designed to meet the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum. This could involve specific exam revision, ongoing support or both. In any case it must start addressing the work studied at school and allow the child to demonstrate competence in those areas tested at school. The good news is that First Class Learning meets all three of these essential requirements. Our structured yet flexible programmes, designed for children in the UK, will help your child to achieve at school and grow in confidence. You can find out more by contacting Neetu & Steve on 07969 303171 or 0115 921 6238. Also at Beeston library on Mondays, and Thursdays at Bramcote Memorial Hall

One of our CAREGivers was recently interviewed as part of a careers recruitment programme. When asked about the role, Katie who is 26, said; “I have regular clients and depending on my availability I work 20-24 hours a week, this is perfect for me as I have young children and I can fit work around them. Twice a week I take a lady who is 86 shopping, she loves going out and looking around the shops. Without me to assist her she wouldn’t be able to do that” Katie also said; “If you are thinking about becoming a CAREGiver I would say it is a very satisfying and rewarding job, it is not the job you first think it is, you walk away at the end of the week knowing you have made a difference to somebody’s life, who without you would not necessarily have the quality of life they want to have”

breeze appeal CAROLINE QUENTIN ANNOUNCED AS PATRON OF COELIAC UK, SUPPORTING THE CHARITY’S CAMPAIGN TO FIND THE UNDIAGNOSED HALF A MILLION
Actress and TV personality, Caroline Quentin is as the new Patron of Coeliac UK, the national Charity for people with coeliac disease, and will support their campaign to improve diagnosis rates which is launched at the start of Coeliac Awareness Week on 11 May 2015. Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system damages the lining of the small bowel when gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye is eaten. There is no cure and no medication; the only treatment is a strict glutenfree diet for life. Key symptoms caused by coeliac disease include; diarrhoea, stomach pain and cramping, mouth ulcers, fatigue, bloating, vomiting and unexplained anaemia. Ms Quentin’s involvement in Coeliac UK’s diagnosis campaign comes at a time when she is close to completing her own diagnosis journey, after an initial positive blood test two years ago and more recently, a genetic test. “I decided to immediately go on a gluten-free diet which made the world of difference to alleviating my symptoms. But I realise now I should have gone on to have a biopsy which is needed to confirm the diagnosis and show the level of damage in my gut,” Ms Quentin said. Finding out that she also possesses one of the genes that causes coeliac disease made Ms Quentin more determined to undertake the biopsy later this year. As both the blood tests and biopsies only work when patients continue eating gluten, Ms Quentin is planning, with medical support, to go back onto a diet containing gluten for six weeks which is essential for the biopsy. “I know it will be tough to go back to eating gluten every day and many of my symptoms are likely to reappear, but I feel it’s important to do this properly so doctors can give me the right help going forward. I also hope it will highlight to the many people who
breezemagazine18
have symptoms how important it is to not change their diet until they have been fully diagnosed by a gastroenterologist,” she said. One in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, with the prevalence rising to one in ten for close family members. However, current statistics shows only 24% of those with the condition are diagnosed, leaving an estimated half a million people in the UK undiagnosed. Left untreated, coeliac disease can lead to osteoporosis and small bowel cancer. A confirmed medical diagnosis of coeliac disease enables people to receive care, monitoring and support for these potential conditions, as well as access to gluten-free food on prescription. Ms Quentin said she was shocked when she found out how many people in the UK are living with undiagnosed coeliac disease, prompting her support for Coeliac UK’s push to increase diagnosis rates. “Coeliac UK’s campaign to reach the half a million people still undiagnosed with coeliac disease really resonates with me because I struggled for years with constant stomach pains, vomiting and total exhaustion. I’m delighted to become the Charity’s Patron and to help those, like myself, who have been in the dark too long about the cause of their pain and discomfort,” Ms Quentin said. Coeliac UK will be launching the campaign during the Charity’s Coeliac Awareness Week, from 11-17 May 2015. The campaign, which will run throughout 2015 and 2016, will highlight the most common symptoms of coeliac disease, and prompt people experiencing these symptoms to ask themselves – ‘is it coeliac disease?’ and to seek further information from a dedicated website established by the Charity. The site (www.isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk) will provide information and advice for the general public and healthcare professionals on the symptoms and risk factors associated with undiagnosed coeliac disease. The site will feature a new self-assessment checklist to help people decide whether they need to seek further medical advice about diagnosis of coeliac disease. Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Coeliac UK said: “We are thrilled Caroline is supporting the Charity as our Patron and wish her well in her final leg of her diagnosis journey. Awareness of coeliac disease has increased greatly in recent years with the Charity’s Helpline supporting hundreds of callers seeking a diagnosis and 1,200 new Members joining every month. Yet, we know there are around half a million people in the UK who are still undiagnosed, which is a shocking statistic. Not only are these people suffering unnecessarily they could also be storing up additional health problems for the future. “Please check your symptoms through our online self-assessment tool, and if you think you may have coeliac disease, go to your doctor and ask for a blood test but don’t stop eating gluten until you are tested,” Ms Sleet said.

CYCLISTS STRETCH OUT FOR SPRING! Local pedallers have been stretching out at a free yoga class specifically aimed at cyclists. The Saturday morning course was set up and delivered by Ridewise and covered a sequence of poses that stretch tight hamstrings, hips and back muscles, and reduce the risk of injury. The exercises create muscular strength, balance and flexibility and end with guided relaxation to ease tension and stress. James from the group said “It’s great to have yoga for cyclists as I cycle a lot and yoga is great for releasing tension and muscular tightness from cycling. I feel very relaxed, destressed and my muscles feel loose after each class. Good to meet other local cyclists too.” The sessions have been so popular that Broxtowe Sport are interested in taking over the running of the course at Chilwell Olympia. Gina from Ridewise said “The classes have been really popular, with a community feel and the opportunity for local cyclists to catch up with each other and share knowledge. Many people were new to yoga but came along as it was aimed at cyclists, so new people are experiencing its benefits. THE HARDEST DECISION - CHOOSING WHICH ESTATE AGENT TO GO WITH... To help, I’ve put together eight must have’ ingredients to give your home the very best opportunity of selling fast for the best price. Here goes... 1. You need a local agent with a branch manager you can trust, who is themselves a local (like me!). They need to know the area and can give expert local advice. It also helps them strike up rapport with your buyers.
2. You want somebody to give you the correct valuation and not inflate the price and give you unrealistic expectations to trick you into signing up (and locking you into a long contract...)
3. There should be one point of contact from beginning to end. So the same person who values your house should also conduct the viewings and always be on hand to give you feedback And that includes giving you their mobile phone number so you can call for an update at any time 4. Accompanied viewings. The truth is that you more than DOUBLE your chances of a sale by having accompanied viewings. Go without and your agent is shooting you in the foot. 5. Open 24/7 for telephone enquiries to book viewings or make offers.
People look for houses at the weekends or on evenings when most agents are shut! Your agent needs to be available when your buyers are ready and waiting to express their interest.
6. Allow buyers to book their own viewings and make offers online 24/7. By making it easy for your potential buyers, you’re more likely to get a sale quickly. 7. They must have exposure on all the major portals. So either Rightmove or Zoopla alone won’t cut it. They need to list on Primelocation as well to showcase your home to the maximum audience.
8. Their boards must stand out. There are so many houses for sale and agents boring boards all look the same. Boards are your property’s shop window. They need to stand out so that everybody notices them! More attention equals more viewers.
It’s a no brainer... With all of these techniques deployed, you’ll be giving your home the very best chance of a fast sale and achieving the best possible price and that includes giving you their mobile phone number so you can call for an update at any time. Good luck!

REBECCA RISES TO ‘THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME’ TO SUPPORT LESS-ABLE GUIDES Toton’s Rebecca Scattergood is preparing for what she says is ‘the challenge of a lifetime’ with a view to helping less-able girls get the most out of being part of Girlguiding UK. A member of Girlguiding since she was seven, Rebecca is now a Ranger Leader with Toton and Attenborough’s Senior Section, a group which caters for local girls and young women aged 14-25. On 18 October, she’ll join 25 other Girlguiding members and supporters on a week-long trek to Machu Picchu in Peru, a 15th-century Inca site high in the Andes. En route, the adventure will take in evocatively-named landmarks like Dead Women’s Pass and the Sun Gate. ‘I’m most looking forward to catching my first glimpse of the Inca citadel at the end of the trek,’ says Rebecca. ‘Having been part of Guiding for so long, I feel it’s my turn to give something back, and I’m hoping the money raised by this challenge will allow more girls and young women to experience the adventure that Girlguiding has to offer.’ Girlguiding is the largest volunteer-led charity for girls and young women across the United Kingdom. As part of her challenge, Rebecca is hoping to raise £4,000 for Girlguiding UK’s special Fund for Members with Disabilities in order to help 50 disabled girls and young women attend a camp with their friends and supporters. To find out about how to contribute, e-mail bexscattergood@aol.com or visit www.justgiving.com/Rebecca-Scattergood Girlguiding Nottinghamshire needs to boost the numbers of its adult volunteers to enable more members to rise to challenges such as this. The branch started in 1966 and originally the walk was 25 miles but was reduced to 9 about 10 years ago. The branch has raised approximately £275,000 from this event . There are about 40 to 50 walkers and last year raised just over £4,000 including sales of T Shirts shown in the pictures. Dogs are also welcome to take part, last year we had 4! Almost everyone taking part in the walk has had their lives transformed either by illnesses of their own or to someone else who has been affected. The mainstays of the group have been Phil and Sybil Harvey who joined the group in 1976. The current committee is chairman Keith Brown, secretary Diane Jones and Treasurer Roger Moors. The research group aims to improve the lives of patients with blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. It has been working to beat blood cancer for more than 50 years and says it ‘won’t stop until we do’. Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research was founded in 1960 when a child who had cancer had almost no hope of survival. Today 9 out of 10 survive. Anyone can get a blood cancer at any age. Around 30,000 people from babies to grandparents are diagnosed with blood cancer every year in the U.K. The walk starts at 26, Moor Lane, Bramcote between 8.30 to 9.30am.

THE LIVING THREADS GROUP Present their 17th exhibition ‘ TEXTILE TREASURES’
Following on from their highly successful last exhibition two years ago, The Living Threads Group of textile artists will stage their forthcoming exhibition of new work at The Obolenksy Building, Trent College, Long Eaton, Derbyshire. It will be open to the public daily from Weds 8th April to Friday 17th April, 2015. The event is eagerly awaited and will be a superb showcase for the extensive talents of its 65 members. The Living Threads Group membership is based in the East Midlands and has been active for over 30 years. It was formed in 1982, evolving from Adult Education In-Service Training Courses in textiles for Derbyshire County Council and has developed an avid and appreciative following. The loyal membership creates a vast array of textile art across many strands of the textile medium. The work is exciting and inspirational and many members offer their expertise and creative initiative to the public through a wide programme of textile day classes across the year, with a Summer School throughout July and August. A dazzling display of work created at these classes by tutors and members will be on view each day alongside the main Exhibition. At each exhibition there is the opportunity not only to view original artworks but to see members’ working notebooks of observational ideas, showing how a particular theme is inspired and developed. Textile ideas are worked using both traditional and contemporary techniques. Individual members’ skills cover a wide spectrum and encompass hand and machine embroidery, beading, canvas work, costumes, felt art, knitwear, lace, patchwork and quilting, rag rugs and soft furnishing. Innovative mixed media and printmaking techniques are often combined with more familiar and established textile practice. There will be the opportunity to watch and gain skills from members as they undertake demonstrations, daily, in their own special textile medium and to purchase smaller original artworks from the extensive shop which runs current with the main Exhibition. The majority of the main exhibits will be available to buy and members will be on hand to discuss their individual artworks with would be purchasers. Each exhibition raises money for two local charities and this year the Group will be supporting Derby, Leicester and Rutland Air Ambulance together with Hayward House at Nottingham City Hospital. It is well worth making a note of the Exhibition dates in your diary in order not to miss what promises to be one of the textile highlights of the year. The Exhibition will be held at:- The Obolenksy Building, Trent College, Derby Rd, Long Eaton, Derbyshire NG10 4AD Wednesday 8th April to Friday 17th April, 2015 Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be available on site Admission is £4, with a free catalogue and free parking {and on a bus route from Nottingham to Derby} www.livingthreadstextileartists.com

VETS OFFER VACCINE AMNESTY FOR LAPSED PETS. Following the successful neutering campaign at Churchcroft Vets the team there are now helping pet owners to keep their pets well by running a special offer for pets who have missed their booster vaccinations (or never been vaccinated). By teaming up with leading vaccine producer Virbac, Churchcroft are able to offer a full course of vaccination for dogs for just £25 and for cats for just £30. The offer is available until May 31st. A recent outbreak of Parvovirus in Nottingham has shown that these diseases are still an ongoing threat to unvaccinated pets. Lead vet George says “There is nothing worse than finding a fatal disease that could have been prevented just by keeping up with a pet’s vaccinations. It’s upsetting for us and devastating for the owners. Vaccines are so safe and effective these days that no pets should have to suffer these terrible illnesses”. All dogs and cats should be vaccinated every year although the type of vaccination they need will depend on their lifestyle. The experts at Churchcroft will check these details with all pet owners to ensure that the appropriate vaccinations are given. To take advantage of this offer call Churchcroft Vets on 0115 922 4855.

grow your own It’s now that we can really start to plan some nice garden growing projects. Why not add in some home grown vegetables as a great way to learn and to supplement your table with the tastiest and freshest food items? Runner Beans One of the easiest of all vegetables to grow so they are a great way to start if you are a novice in the garden. Runner beans will need a support to climb up with the usual method being individually up inwardly sloping 8ft tall bamboo canes tied near their top to a horizontal cane. By sloping the bamboo canes so that they meet in the
breezemagazine 34
middle and tying them there (so that the ends of the canes extend beyond the horizontal cane supporting them) makes picking easier and the yield is usually better as well. If you are growing in beds/borders then a wigwam of canes takes up less room and helps produce an ornamental feature so you don’t have the more serious look of a dedicated vegetable garden if you prefer that. Loosely tie the plants to their supports after planting; after that they will climb naturally using their ever growing creepers. Remove the growing point once the plants reach the top of their support – these keeps the goodness for the tasty part of the plant we are after later. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for slugs and blackfly that may attack the plants. Slugs can make irregular holes in plant tissue with their rasping mouth parts - they can kill young seedlings by completely eating them. If you see this type of damage it could be our mollusc friends! Place traps, such as jars part-filled with beer
and sunk into the soil near vulnerable plants. Check and empty these regularly, preferably every morning. You can buy these from your garden centre as well. Place barriers, such as copper tapes around pots or stand containers on matting impregnated with copper salts. Moistureabsorbent minerals can be placed around plants to create slug barriers or try sawdust/eggshell barriers and copper tape. Experiment, as you may find some more successful than others. Organic sprays, such pyrethrum can get rid of blackfly (and aphids as well) but plants in flower should not be sprayed due to the danger to bees and other pollinating insects. Flower set: Runner beans sometimes fail to set (flower) and there are a number of causes and a number of solutions. Making sure the soil is constantly moist and doesn’t get dried out is vital to success. Add mulch (usually organic matter such bark chippings (continues...)

to retain moisture (and improve the soil as worms work it into the ground over time) to the soil in June. Misting the foliage and flowers regularly - especially during hot, dry weather - will increase humidity around the flowers and help improve flower set. If you don’t later get the pod sizes you expected then it may well be you haven’t kept the moisture in the soil in this way – so do make sure you follow these instructions! Flower set is better in alkaline, chalky soils so if your soil is neutral or acidic (you can get inexpensive test kits to show you this) water it with some hydrated lime. You can also improve flower set by pinching out the growing tips of the plants when they are 6in high. The flowers formed on the resulting sideshoots most usually set better. Try growing pink or white flowered varieties, such as ‘Painted Lady’ or ‘Mergoles’, which usually set pods more easily and are thus better for a beginner. Start harvesting when the pods are 6-8in long and certainly before the beans inside begin to swell. It is important that you pick regularly to prevent any pods reaching maturity; once this happens plants will stop flowering and no more pods will be set. If you pick regularly, plants will crop for up to eight weeks or more. Land Cress Land cress, sometimes referred to as ‘American cress’, is a tasty watercress substitute (It has a peppery taste, like watercress) and is rich in vitamins, iron and calcium. It doesn’t require water beds, as with our
breezemagazine 36
traditional English variety, and provides a continuous supply over a long period. It is easy to grow so ideal for learners! The added benefit is that being hardy, it will provide pickings through the winter if covered with a cloche or similar protection. So here’s how to grow it.... For cropping during the summer, sow directly into the soil between March and August sowing thinly, 1/2 in deep, in rows 6 in apart. Thin the seedlings out to 4 inc apart for baby leaves or to 12 inc for full-sized plants The plant will tolerate shade and prefers fertile, cool, moist Jobs this month soil, so do not allow to dry • Keep weeds under control out and keep the area weed (they start to pick up with warmth) free. You can harvest them • Protect fruit blossom from late frosts approximately within 7-8 weeks of sowing. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses Harvest baby leaves by • Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds picking a few leaves from each plant. To harvest mature • Increase the water given to houseplants plants, pull the whole plant • Feed hungry shrubs and roses up and trim the roots off. • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches Cut plants regularly while they are fresh and young as • Divide Hostas before they come into leaf this will encourage further • Remove faded Winter Pansy flowers growth. (this helps keep them flowering) Keep learning and • Plant Lily bulbs in containers as always..... Enjoy!

The Landscaping Services We Offer Include: Landscaping Plants Block Paving Lawns Fencing Walls Artificial Grass Water Features Patios Aggregates Carefully blending the art and craft of horticulture, terrain shaping and aesthetically pleasing structures, Cut Above can create for you an outdoor ‘space’ rather than a mere garden. As more and more of us seek solace and relaxation in our homes as an antidote to life’s stresses the outdoor element has become increasingly the focus of a more inspired approach. As the proud owner of Cut Above, Glyn Horner heads up a team of skilled and experienced operators that he knows he can trust to deliver the kind of result he would expect for himself. “Every one of our staff is fully trained and certified to accomplish a wide variety of landscaping projects, so that you can be sure of receiving a knowledgeable and enthusiastic team to complete your job.” he explains. There are two broad elements to landscaping: soft landscaping and hard landscaping. “It takes trained knowledge and experience to really get the best out of the soil that is present in a given location - we can condition soil to help in certain circumstances and also vastly improve underlying drainage when it is needed, for instance. Circumstances can vary so much though and it also depends upon what the client has in mind for the type of space they want and need.” adds Glyn. In terms of hard landscaping within a project, the team can supply and instal flagging, stone paving, block paving, kerbing, slabbing, concreting and the laying of tarmac. Driveways, patios, pathways, steps and other hard areas can be fashioned or re-surfaced in an assortment of finishes to harmonise with the surroundings. “Our hard landscaping team designs and puts up new walls and fences in a range of materials as well as looking after existing structures.” says Glyn. Every project is different which is why Glyn can meet you and discuss your requirements and ideas to enable him to supply a quote that fits your budget and make it a reality. Melbourne Operatic Society is proud to present a fully-staged production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, with a 14-piece accompanying orchestra, at The Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton from Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th April 2015 starting at 7.30pm.
This will be the Melbourne Operatic Society’s forth Gilbert & Sullivan production at The Duchess Theatre and previous audiences have been praiseworthy of the quality of performances. This year sees our largest and most experienced cast since starting to perform at The Duchess. The production is being directed by Gary Askam - who produced Iolanthe last year and David Henshaw is the new musical director. David replaces Bryan Clarke, who retired after last year’s show having been the musical director for 17 years. The Mikado is the ninth of fourteen operettas by Gilbert & Sullivan and is probably the most well-known and most frequently performed. It is set in Japan and includes well-known songs by The Mikado, Koko and the three little maids. Tickets are available on Saturday mornings at The Duchess Theatre, from our website at www.melbourneoperaticsociety.com or by telephoning Gill McGhee on 07980 421453.

breeze appeal Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit have a Tinnitus trial running at the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit and QMC testing a potential new treatment for Tinnitus. Could you volunteer?
Tinnitus describes any sound a person can hear from inside their body rather than from an outside source. It affects up to 10% of adults in the U.K and it can be very distressing. Unfortunately, there is no cure, and it costs the NHS £27m a year to help people manage their symptoms through hearing aids and/or counselling. “Our research at the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit, addresses this problem. Our core work assessing the effectiveness of current NHS treatments is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). We also partner with industry to evaluate novel treatments that are not yet available to the NHS. Having worked closely with the British Tinnitus Association over 10 years, as a member of the Professional Advisors’ Committee and Board of Trustees, I am aware that many people who experience tinnitus would like a drug treatment to be made available. In June 2014 Autifony Therapeutics, with the University of Nottingham as the academic partner, were successful in securing a grant of over £2 million from the Technology Strategy Board to evaluate a potential new therapy to treat tinnitus. This collaboration will help to assess whether Autifony’s lead compound (AUT00063) can successfully treat the symptoms of tinnitus. Autifony Therapeutics Limited (trial Sponsor) is a UK-based company formed in 2011 as a spin-out from GlaxoSmithKline. The company directors worked within GlaxoSmithKline’s Neuroscience Centre of Excellence for Drug Discovery and so have a lot of experience in the drug pipeline. Recent scientific evidence indicates that tinnitus is associated with abnormal changes in the hearing regions of the brain. AUT00063 targets a specific part of the nerve cells which play a key role at many levels of the hearing brain. The trial is the first of its kind in the UK to test the effectiveness of a tablet taken orally (swallowed) to treat central (i.e. brain-related) tinnitus. The multi-site trial is called QUIET-1 and it will recruit up to 150 people across 10-12 participating NHS sites in England including Nottingham. The trial is recruiting now. QUIET-1 is a randomised controlled trial. This means that if a participant is accepted into the trial, he/she will be chosen at random to take either the medication or a placebo (dummy drug). Participants would be required to attend the clinic on four occasions to have some study assessments made, over a period of about 10 weeks. Within that time, participants will take the medication or placebo daily for 4 weeks. Volunteers for this study need to have been diagnosed with subjective tinnitus for more than 6 months but less than 18 months and are at least 18 years of age. Reimbursement for time and travel is offered. Further details are available on the Autifony company website (www.autifony.com). For specific queries about volunteering contact the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (BRU): +44 (0)115 823 2600 to speak with one of the study team (10am-3pm).
