breeze walk this way Next month is National Walking Month, here’s some ideas to get you out and about... In May 2013, National charity Living Streets will unveil a miracle cure. It can transform your fitness levels, reduce stress, and vastly improve your concentration levels for the day ahead. And it’s absolutely free! National Walking Month is a month dedicated to highlighting the benefits of walking, and includes Walk to Work Week (13-17 May) and Walk to School Week (20-24 May). In National Walking Month 2012, the UK public collectively logged 128,271 miles – that’s 146.76 times between Land’s End and John O’Groats. Workplaces logged 70,000 miles during Walk to Work Week alone! “We want to turn this around in May, and encourage people to walk more by logging their walks to school, on the commute to work, or even taking the dog for a walk round the park”. Registration for National Walking Month is now available at www.livingstreets.org.uk. Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets said: “This May, we want to get the whole of the UK buying a ticket to stride. As part of National Walking Month we’ll be asking employees and school children to give walking a go for at least a week. "It can be as simple as walking all or part of the journey to school, stepping out of the office for a lunchtime walk, or getting off the bus a few stops earlier on your way home from the office. “You don’t need costly gym sessions, or marathon running attempts to get fit and active. Walking is a free and easy way to work more exercise into your daily routine, and logging your walks on www.livingstreets.org.uk this National Walking Month is a great way to get started.”

breeze love where you live The charity Keep Britain Tidy today released the results from its bigger litter count yet. And because so many volunteers participated, it was able to release specific results for the East Midlands too. For the first time, the charity invited volunteers to join its surveying staff across the UK. More than 500 people went out on to the country’s streets, allowing Keep Britain Tidy to record more than 37,000 items of rubbish. It’s a data sample almost more than ten times larger than litter counts in previous years. In the East Midlands, 41 people signed up to count more than 2,370 pieces of litter – on the street, in parks, on beaches or beside rivers and canals. Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Phil Barton said: “This survey provides us with a snapshot of what people have littered in communities across the country. It also gives more than 2,370 reasons in the East Midlands alone why we all need to do more to make littering socially unacceptable – to reduce the environmental, social and financial costs of this national problem.” The most littered brand in the East Midlands was Cadbury,
breezemagazine 6
followed by McDonald’s, Walkers, Coke and Fosters. Mars, Imperial Tobacco, Tesco, Pepsi and Haribo rounded out the top ten. Nearly 200 pieces of Cadbury rubbish were counted, meaning it came top of the East Midlands list with 8% of the total recorded litter. Coke was the most littered brand across the country, followed by Cadbury, Walkers, McDonald’s and Mars. Complete results can be seen at www.keepbritaintidy.org/litterco unt “These results should be a wake-up call that we all need to do more to love where we live,” Mr Barton continued. “Litter is not just an environmental problem. It affects perceptions of safety and costs government nearly a billion pounds a year to clean up. “Everyone has a role to play, including everyone who buys these products. When you buy a bottle of pop, a bag of crisp or a chocolate bar, you don’t just buy the contents you buy the packaging as well and it is your responsibility to dispose of it correctly.” Mr Barton noted more will need to be done: “As Government cuts put pressure on local authority services, and impact on their efforts to get litterers to dispose of things correctly, England could see more litter in more places. That can’t happen. It’s time for more responsible companies to help more people love more places, by joining efforts to convince their consumers to do the right thing.” He also thanked the hundreds of volunteers – from community
groups to school children – who gave up half an hour of their time to support Keep Britain Tidy’s survey. “We are very grateful to the many volunteers who took time to give us a better idea of what is being littered in England. The strong response shows people do love where they live and want much more to be done to clean up our country.” In previous years, the count was conducted by Keep Britain Tidy staff, looking purely at town and
city centres. This resulted in fast food being the most-littered item by an often-significant margin. Inviting volunteers to survey more diverse areas resulted in a broader range of most-littered items. The count is not scientific and has always been a snapshot of surveyed areas. “With much more data this year, one thing is clear. Whether you use, sell or make something, we call do more to ensure it is disposed of correctly,” Mr Barton concluded.

breeze memory lane The 100,000th historic photograph capturing yesteryear in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire has just been added to the Picture the Past website. The not-for-profit project also marked its tenth anniversary at an event held at Nottinghamshire County Council Archives. This delightful photograph of a Whit March in Arnold from 1890 was selected as the milestone image to be added to the website. ‘Picture the Past’ is a not-for-profit project, started in 2002, that aims to make historic images from the library, archives and museum collections across the whole of Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, available via a completely free-to-use website. Picture the Pastís offices were founded at Heanor Library in 2002, before moving to the Record Office at Derbyshire County Council in 2011. Initially funded for three years with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the scheme is now managed and funded by the local authorities of Derbyshire County Council, Nottinghamshire County Council together with the two city council’s of Nottingham City and Derby City. There are photographs, postcards, engravings and paintings on the website showing how life has changed in the region over the last few hundred years giving a fascinating insight into the work and lives of the people who lived there. The event was attended by representatives from each of the local authorities as well as people who have been directly involved in the project. Professor John Beckett, from the Department of History at the University of Nottingham who is an expert in the history of the East Midlands, gave a short speech about the importance of preserving historic images digitally. Picture the Past’s Project Manager, Nick Tomlinson, said: “It is wonderful that Picture The Past is now entering its second decade and the public interest continues year after year. Our web pages currently receive around 100,000 views a month. As well as the photographs which are stocked in our collections, people contribute images which they find in attics and elsewhere to be digitised on our systems”. You can see all 100,000 images on the Picture the Past site by visiting www.picturethepast.org.uk

property matters Q: I’m moving abroad and will be renting out my home in Nottingham. Do I need to tell my mortgage provider?
Welcome to our new regular feature where Julian Divine, Director of Whitegates Estate Agents answers your questions regarding buying, selling or letting property. Julian has twenty years experience in the industry, all of that time based in the Nottingham area. Please feel free to email your questions to propertymatters@whitegates.co.uk
breezemagazine 10
A: Yes! If your property is mortgaged on a residential mortgage you will be breaching the terms of the mortgage by renting the property out. However, if you inform the bank and request their consent to let it out and they grant that consent then all is ok. You may have to pay an admin fee and they may, in some circumstances, change the interest rate that you are paying. It is vital you get their consent as letting without consent will mean that any tenancy created is invalid and could lead to the bank repossessing the property and evicting the tenant, who would then have the right to sue you for any costs and distress caused by this – so its well worth a short phone call to the bank to prevent these huge potential issues! Q: We've just let a house that we inherited, and now a friend says we should have registered the deposit? Can you advise? A: You should indeed have registered the deposit (or ‘bond’ as they are more usually referred to). Since April 2007, all bonds for
assured shorthold tenancies are required to be protected in one of 3 government approved schemes. Failure to do so could mean you having to pay the tenant upto 3 times the amount of the bond as a penalty for noncompliance. In addition, taking possession of the property can be made more difficult too if the correct procedure for protecting the bond has not been followed. Registering the bond is not as simple as you may think, if you require assistance in doing this please contact Whitegates and we will help you to get it right. Q: Is 2013 the time to buy-to-let? A: The rental market in the UK is growing as a tightening of mortgage lending and lack of deposits means that fewer people can buy a house. This is forcing more people to rent and in some areas there is a lack of suitable rental property – particularly of family homes. Yields can be good if you invest in the right property in the right area and a reputable letting agent will be able to advise you on what type of property is in short supply in their particular area. Disclaimer: The responses given in this column are for general guidance only . Always seek independent legal advice.

For the Relish: 3 birdseye chillies, finely chopped 2 spring onions, finely chopped ½ lemon, juiced 1 tbsp tomato puree Method Preheat the oven to 220C. Cut the sweet potatoes in half and bake in their skins on an oil coated baking tray for 30 minutes. While the potatoes are cooking you can start on the burgers. When they are cooked scoop out the flesh and set aside. Fry the onions in a little olive oil until soft then add the garlic and ras-el-hanout. Continue to fry for another 30 seconds. Chop one of the pineapple rings into small cubes and put in a big bowl with
the cooked sweet potato flesh, fried onions, rose harissa, breadcrumbs, almonds and pumpkin seeds. Season to taste. Form the mixture into burgers. You can make one normal burger or two thin ones per bun. Coat them in the gram flour and shallow fry until golden on each side. While the burgers are frying make the relish by mixing all the ingredients together. At this point also start to griddle the pineapple rings on each side. Assemble the burgers by placing one burger in each bun, followed by the griddled pineapple then the relish. Add the second burger on top if using. Serve with fresh salad

Chilwell’s Greatest Loser!
breeze advertorial
A super slimmer is proving to be a winner at the losing game after shedding 4 stone and being named Chilwell’s Slimming World ‘Greatest Loser’, with the emphasis well and truly on Greatest!
Kerry McKenna, 35 years old, says her size was affecting every aspect of her daily life. Since joining her local Slimming World group in Chilwell she is 4st lighter. Not only has she won the best prize of all – a fitter, healthier, happier future altogether – she’s also won the group’s Greatest Loser 2013 prize for the member who’s lost the most weight – on top of winning the Chilwell group’s Women of the Year 2012 and getting through to the top 6 in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire group finals last year. Kerry McKenna says: “I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people I haven’t seen for a while say they don’t recognise me! I feel happier and healthier, I’ve got more energy and I’m much more confident now too. “Before, I lost the weight I’d pretend I didn’t care that I was bigger than other people, but that just wasn’t true. I hated clothes shopping and walking my dogs would leave me out of breath. I felt awful. Now I just want to make up for lost time and experience all of the things that my weight held me back from doing.” So, after her close friend decided to become a Slimming World Consultant Kerry decided to join her group and start her own weight loss journey, Kerry joined her local Slimming World group at Inham Nook Methodist Church, Pearson Avenue, Chilwell, She says: “Walking through those doors was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, I was embarrassed and terrified that I was going to be the biggest person there. But I needn’t have worried because everyone there was so very friendly and welcoming. I’ve made so many friends there and their support and encouragement has been the best. When you have a lot of weight to lose there are many hurdles to overcome to change old ways and adopt new healthy habits that you can sustain for the rest of your life. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my Consultant Kerry Ward and the rest of the group. Every week they were there with a new recipe or shopping tip and if I was struggling someone always seemed to have the perfect piece of advice.” The club’s now-famous Food Optimising plan was a surprise too: “People think slimming means going hungry, eating nothing but salad, obsessively counting every calorie you eat and weighing or measuring everything on your plate, but it’s not like that at all at Slimming World. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’. I still enjoy all my favourite meals like burgers and chips and roast dinners but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or low calorie cooking spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in really well with the rest of my family as well. We all enjoy the same meals and we all feel tons better for it.” Now Kerry’s lost a total of 4st and gone from a size 18 to a size 12, she’s also more active nowadays and regularly goes to the gym and walks her two rescue dogs. Kerry Ward who runs the Chilwell Slimming World group, says: “The change we’ve seen in Kerry is amazing. She’s a huge inspiration to the other members and I hope her success will inspire other people in Chilwell who’d like to lose weight and become happier and healthier to take action. There’s a warm welcome waiting at Slimming World.” The Chilwell group meets every Thursday at 5pm & 7pm at Inham Nook Methodist Church, Pearson Avenue, Chilwell. Amrik Singh has helped out in the industry most of his life for the family business. Because of the experience he gained in all aspects of the supply chain and drinks retailing he really wanted to put all of that together to set up his own business offering customers superb offer prices across the board on their favourite drinks. This opportunity arose when he saw the shop for rent on Wollaton Road in Beeston. The location used to be used by the Thresher retailer but was now To Let. “This was a perfect place for me” says Amrik. “Customers were previously already used to buying the drinks they enjoy there but now I could offer my cut pricing and fantastic range to those same customers” he explains. Amrik offers a unique service in that if you can’t find wine spirits or beers anywhere else he will order it in for you. This is all part of the extra effort that comes as standard with Simply Drinks on Wollaton Road. Amrik says “ I have the largest selection of wines spirits and beers in the area, and cheaper than leading supermarkets.” “If you are sceptical about what you are reading then call in and see for yourself.” he adds. Customers who enjoy the finer things in life can now buy Havana and Cuban cigars from the shop - one of only a very few in the areas to do so, as these are amongst the very best cigars available. Special offers available, changing weekly but they do sell fast. Look out for quality local ales including Castle Rock, Blue Monkey and Dancing Duck. “Now you can enjoy these quality ales without breaking the budget” says Amrik. breeze appeal Local Charity is looking to you to help them continue their latest venture. Can you help?......
Local businessman Kewal Athwal, an Erewash Borough Councillor, is supporting a new initiative launched by the Canaan Trust. The scheme seeks to provide the Trust’s homeless clients with the opportunity to gain some valuable ‘commercial enterprise’ experience. In essence the Trust has launched its own Charity Shop on-line through Ebay. The Ebay Charity shop is run by a group of clients who oversee the photographing of saleable items, their listing on Ebay, handling of the email correspondence with potential customers, and ultimately the dispatching and fulfillment of orders placed. Kevin Curtis, Project Manager at the Canaan Trust, says, ‘This new initiative is a winner all round. Our clients are keen and eager to learn new ‘commercial’ skills and disciplines which will look positive and proactive on their CVs while at the same time helping to provide badly needed funds to enable the Trust to continue to provide its support to those most vulnerable in our local communities’. In their first move into running the Charity Shop On-line the Trust’s clients sold a batch of over 20 men’s themed (Rocky Balboa and Star Wars) dressing gowns. The ‘stock’ was snapped up very quickly providing the clients with a great deal of encouragement to develop the initiative. Hearing of this initiative Cllr Kewal Athwal got in touch generously offering to share some stock from his own business to provide the Trust’s Charity Shop with product to sell.
Cllr Athwal says, ‘This is a brilliant initiative and is truly a ‘win win’ for clients and the Canaan Trust, the charity which supports them. Having heard of its early success I wanted to see how I, as a local businessman, could help. I am sure many other local businesses and retailers have stock which they could make available. The stock could be end of line items, multiple or single items, samples, seconds. The Canaan Trust will value anything that is offered. It would be great if other businesses could he join in and look to help.’ If you are in business locally, are a local retailer or wholesaler and you would like to encourage this initiative you can contact the Canaan Trust on 0115 946 4903. Anyone can become homeless – the Trust has assisted individuals who have become homeless after their business has had to close as a result of the recession. Do your bit to help support your local homeless.

STAGECOACH BEESTON CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF PERFORMING ARTS!
tion breeze promo
Saturday 23rd March was a monumental day for Stagecoach Beeston as it celebrated 10 years Photo By: Eleri Tunstall since it first opened its at ICKOOTU Photography doors. Around fifty students and their parents battled through unseasonal snow to perform for the eagerly awaited end of term talent show. Based loosely around the X factor and Britain's got talent, it was fantastic to see so much talent from the students at the school. Not only did we see some excellent singing and dancing, but we saw some extra skills such as musical instruments, gymnastics, the 'three' dancing pony and "the cup song". There was an excellent jovial atmosphere in the school on Saturday, and we even welcomed back the previous principal (and founder of the Beeston school) as a guest judge on our judging panel. Stagecoach Beeston is a great place to be. In July our 6-18 year olds will be on stage at the royal concert hall. No previous performing arts experience is required, so come and find out more now! Taxing times The economy has affected everyone one way or another... we’ve some advice on how to save money and plan for the future... TAX AND CHILD BENEFIT CHANGES As you may be aware during the 2012/2013 tax year the rules relating to who can claim child benefit changed. If you or your partner have received child benefit after 7th January 2013 and you earned more than £50,000 in the year it will be necessary for you to inform HM Revenue & Customs that you need to complete a self assessment tax return for the year ended 5th April 2013 and complete and submit the return by 31st January 2014. HM Revenue & Customs have admitted that not everyone affected by these changes have been contacted so many people are unaware of this and it is estimated that an additional 300,000 people will be required to complete tax returns due to this change. Bramcote Accountancy Services can help you with completing the form to request a tax return and completion of the tax return itself for a low fixed fee, you will have the reassurance that your tax return is completed by a fully qualified Chartered Tax Adviser and that your tax liability will be minimised as far as legally possible. To arrange a free no obligation consultation call 0115 925 5337 or email info@bramcoteaccountancy.co.uk IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO PLAN Planning for the future is important for all of us. Particularly if there’s a family business involved. Sadly, making sure that everything’s in place should you or a family member become ill or need care or die is all too often left on the ‘to do’ list. Sometimes also on the ‘too difficult’ list. Planning ahead can make life so much easier for those who are left behind to pick up the pieces. Making a Will is something most of us have not done yet, even though statistics say that as many as 100% will die one day. If you don’t write a Will, the intestacy rules decide which family members get your assets. Thinking through your wishes now and setting them out clearly in a Will can help to avoid expensive family disputes, and sometimes even save Inheritance Tax. Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney while you still have full mental capacity will allow a trusted family member, friend or professional advisor of your choice to take charge of your finances and/or make decisions about personal welfare issues should you not be able to do so yourself. Making gifts during your lifetime can save tax – but you need to structure any giving carefully to get the best results. Planning for Care Fees is something many people are concerned about. The Government has announced that long term care bills are to be capped at £72,000 with pensioners encouraged to take out private insurance to cover themselves. But what will this mean for your family? Some commentators say that thousands will still be forced to sell their homes to fund the payments. Despite the wealth of information now available online, there is no substitute for getting face-to-face professional legal advice from a solicitor about your own family situation. Do beware of unregulated will-writing companies making outlandish promises. As in many areas of life, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. For help in writing Wills, creating powers of attorney, and planning for the future, contact Jayne Smith at Rothera Dowson on 0800 158 5316.

SAVE MONEY ON ALL YOUR BILLS Reset Renewables are a local company dedicated to reducing it’s customers energy bills. Director, John Allen has been actively involved for the past ten years in the industry and with the formation of Reset Renewables for the past three years. “Energy costs are spiralling and a large part of your earnings are going on fuel leaving less disposable cash for holidays or savings, we can reverse this trend by simply investing in products which will save on energy such as LED lights and voltage optimisation these 2 products can combined shave 20% per year off a household electricity bill. If you wish to invest and reap a steady income far greater than banks or building societies then we offer Solar panels. Solar panels produce electricity which you are paid to produce you can use this in your house and even heat up your hot water cylinder while out at work, this also reduces your need to buy electricity and what you don’t use you are paid to export. If you look around on many houses you will see so many people have started producing their own electricity with solar panels, many say it’s not the investment side that attracts them but they are getting a hold on the ever increasing bills. Later this year there is another initiative coming out ‘The renewable heat incentive’ which will allow you to replace your boiler for a heat pump. This takes the heat from the environment and compresses it, allowing large savings to gas and oil. We will be able to install solar thermal panels that heat your hot water also through the renewable heat incentive. The government are trying to reduce Co2 emissions and intern this will dramatically reduce house hold energy bills. With ever increasing fuel bills, talk to your local engineer at Reset Renewables, we are a family company living and working around this part of Nottingham. “I have tried not to confuse, just give the basics and on arrival at your home or office I can explain in as much detail as you wish. These technologies work and work very well, we can offer monitoring and 20 year warranties included in the cost” Why not give Reset Renewables a call to see how they can start saving you money 0115 837 8322

Have you ever thought that you’d like to have a go yourself, either on stage or backstage? Beeston Players would love for you to join them. “Don’t worry, if you’ve never acted before we won’t throw you in at the deep end! We welcome people of all abilities and experience. There are frequently smaller roles which you can start off in, and as you get more and more confident, you can opt for the larger roles. It’s entirely up to you! But plays aren’t just about the acting. There are always lots of other important roles including direction, production, set design, sound & lighting, prompting, front of house etc… We meet regularly on Monday evenings, from 7.30-9.30 (except during the summer), so this would be a good opportunity to come and meet us and find out more. You will usually find us reading through different scripts, looking to get ideas of future plays for the group to perform. In the run up to a production, those involved will be rehearsing, leaving a smaller reading group, so you will certainly get a chance to take part. We usually break for about a half hour to have coffee and biscuits and catch up with one another. Monday meetings take place at Christ-Church Chilwell (get directions). The entrance is on College Road, and we meet in the room at the top of the stairs. There is an annual membership fee of £15, but we’ll only ask you to pay if you want to commit to joining us, so please feel free to come along for several weeks before deciding. Also, we ask members to contribute £1 per week to cover tea/coffee and biscuits”. If you’re interested in coming along to a meeting, please get in contact via their website www.beestonplayers.Org

breezegardening There’s is nothing that nature cannot ultimately deal with - with varying degrees of help from us. This month we look at how we can over come the recent weather and look forward to spending time in our gardens... The kind hand of the gardener As gardeners we may well see our role as a kindly one looking after that which grows and nurturing it. The wisest path to success here is to choose carefully those plants which reliably grow in our climate - or even choose ones that can take a slightly harsher environment just to be sure. Tactics such as avoiding high-nitrogen fertilisers as they encourage plants to make lots of sappy leafy growth that is particularly susceptible to damage, especially early and late in the year are also helpful. Another tip is to avoid planting tender shrubs in East facing sites as that is where the chill will generally come from. When you do get planting it may well be wise to have some gardeners wire, some thin plastic tubing and some fleece to make quick & easy cloches if a frosty period comes back to bite. If your plants do get damaged they can still sometimes recover so don’t despair and do try to either cover them or, if in pots, move them to shelter - either inside or in a greenhouse (did you read our article on making your own shelter in the January issue?). Just remember that all plants have their ‘zone’ and the UK climate comes into a surprising range of these zones die to our varied weather system. As mentioned before, shelter is most helpful whether it is a natural or permanent barrier to cold winds or something more substantial like a greenhouse or cold frame. The humble cloche is the gardeners friend too so use it - or maybe lose it! A ray of sunshine Why not plant out some bulbs ready for early summer? Like buried treasure they will rise up and lighten our hearts with the promise of growth and colour. Bulbs are on sale now and you should look for nice healthy and firm bulbs with no signs of mould. The soil temperature should be around 13c and so with our rather late spring it’s not too late to plant them around now. Place with the pointed end upwards in it’s own hole and cover gently with soil. If you plant into pots these
breezemagazine 34
can then be lifted in winter and stored, ready for next springs plant out. Bulbs just keep dividing so it’s very cost effective and fun. You will need to lift summer flowering bulbs as they won’t be hardy in winter and will die off. Store them wrapped in dry paper (old newspapers will do) and away from frost so indoors is best. At least by getting some bulbs in pots or the ground we have something to look forward to and enjoy, even as we move onto other interesting garden planting later in the year. As always in our gardens we have to work with nature and not against it which is what our path of learning is leading us to as we continue to make our garden bloom. Let’s look forward to making our garden the lovely patch it was last year. Enjoy! ...(continues)

breeze gardening Points to watch this month:
• Beware late frosts: cover plants if heavy frost is forecast and do not put vulnerable bedding plants out without cover just yet. • Deadhead daffodils and Narcissi and feed them with liquid feed ready for next year. Leave the leaves on. • Tidy & hoe spring borders before the growing season really takes hold and over runs you! • Add mulch where needed again before growth blocks where you want o go with it. Your own garden compost, out of date grow bags or manure are all good. • When the soil eventually warms up add general purpose fertiliser before covering with your mulch on borders, and fruit or veg patches. Don’t forget containers need a feed too. • Time to check those garden tools whilst we still have time: is your mower up to the job? • With warmer temperatures it’s also a good time to give the shed a good coat of preservative - go on and treat yourself to a brighter colour this year! Be aware that fence sprayers used in the open can allow the mist to drift and cause a nuisance to say the very least! • Attack slugs and snails before they get chance to colonise your garden (we have covered this pest in our August 2012 issue which you can view online).

bre Half price neutering special offer at Churchcroft Vets. FINAL MONTH!
Churchcroft Vets have been offering half price neutering in March and this has been extremely popular. The offer runs until the end of April so this is a great time to take action to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens. Any age of dog or cat can be neutered although there is a preference for doing this younger since this avoids the possibility of unwanted pregnancies and there is some evidence that it is safer. Head vet George comments “There is a body of evidence from the United States and elsewhere that early neutering is associated with better welfare for pets. This means that anyone can take advantage of this offer in the next few weeks. Since we have started neutering earlier we have noted that the patients recover more quickly from the surgery. In addition, they do not seem to associate the surgery with an unpleasant experience in the way some older pets do. Also, we now do invisible stitching for all our neuterings so there is no need to use those horrible bulky head collars. This makes the post-op care much nicer for the pets and their owners!” Nurse Rhiannon adds “Neutering is also a great time to consider having your pet microchipped. Whilst chipping can be done in dogs and cats when they are awake it is nicer for them to have it done whilst asleep so they don’t feel a thing”. Pets can be dropped off for neutering from 8am in the morning allowing busy folk to fit this in around their working day. Churchcroft’s HALF PRICE neutering offer runs until the end of April. That means cat neutering from just £23/29 and dog neutering from just £65/85. Hurry though because places are limited. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and take advantage of this deal immediately.

Getting unstuck! Despite the quite cold and frosty March one thing is fairly certain; the weather will start to change, become warmer and more inviting. This will happen quite naturally which is not always the case when we get stuck or frozen in a psychologically and emotionally negative state. Our mind can too easily become stuck and cause us many difficulties in work, with our families and our relationships. Trying to get out of such a stuck state can be hard if we try to do it on our own. Martin Smith, a therapist based in Long Eaton can and does help many people get out of a variety of such stuck or frozen negative states. Martin has a well-established private therapy practice and deals with a variety of issues using common sense practical approaches of solution focused therapy. A vital factor to Martin’s approach is flexibility. “We are all individuals and processes and interventions which work for one person may not work for others; it is vital to ensure treatment suits the client” comments Martin. If you would like to know more about Martin’s approach and want to move your life forward now, call him direct on 07973 410010 or email itctherapy@aol.com for an initial appointment. Over the last decade an estimated 200,000 people have had their blood pressure checked at Know Your Blood Pressure events hosted by Rotary with the Stroke Association. Over 30,000 people were tested in 2012; this year the hope is to reach even more as 40% of strokes could be prevented if undiagnosed high blood pressure was identified and treated. There are 152,000 strokes in the UK every year, which works out at one every five minutes. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor contributing to stroke, but it has no symptoms and can affect people of any age. 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure yet many of them don’t know it. If left untreated, it can increase your risk of having a stroke. To mark the anniversary the Rotary club of Wollaton Park is hosting a free Know Your Blood Pressure event at Wollaton Co-Operative Store, Wollaton Road, on Saturday 27th April 2013 to raise awareness about the link between blood pressure and stroke. Measuring blood pressure is quick, simple and painless; it is done with an inflatable cuff put on your arm. The NHS recommends that all adults have their blood pressure checked at least every five years. Jon Barrick, Chief Executive of the Stroke Association said; “Stroke is one of the UK’s biggest killers and leading cause of adult disability, but far too many people don’t understand it or ever think it’ll happen to them. Rotary have been a fantastic partner in hosting these events which play a vital role in preventing stroke and letting people know their level of risk so they can take action before it’s too late. Everyone should have their blood pressure tested at Know Your Blood Pressure events” Mike Lucas, President of the Rotary Club of Wollaton Park added, “The Know Your Blood Pressure events have helped prevent thousands of strokes over the last ten years. Learning your blood pressure is high can be worrying, but these events will give you advice on the simple steps you can take to keep it under control. Healthy eating, stopping smoking and taking regular exercise will all make a difference and reduce your risk.” For more information on stroke, call the Stroke Association helpline on 0303 3033 100 or visit www.stroke.org.uk/kybp . Join your local Rotary club and discover how you can make a difference. For more information about Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, visit www.ribi.org.
